I'm not sure how the colder weather will effect the production. I know some people in Northern climates keep them in pots, but Brown Turkey figs have VERY aggressive roots, so that would be tough. What is your average winter low where you're at?
I have seen people in Britain growing fig trees. They can be very hardy. One trick is to grow them against a wall - south facing in the northern hemisphere, where they get most direct sunlight and heat. They are incredibly tough once they get going. They grow in cracks in rocks in the Mediterranean.
A beekeeping friend let me pick a turkey fig a few years ago. I've got Chicago Hardy's in the yard. I'm now looking for the brown Turkey Fig this week. Local nurseries have them.

What times of year do your figs ripen here in the valley? I have a bunch of figs that started growing about a month ago and I'm wondering if they'll ripen on time.
That really depends on the variety and the age of the tree. Brown turkey figs usually set a very strong crop in the spring that ripens in July and then a Fall set that tries to ripen, but doesn't always quite get there. Some green figs like Panache have a light Spring crop and then a solid Fall crop that doesn't ripen until November or so. The Fall crops can be hit or miss depending on our weather, but it can easily extend into November.
I live near Bristol UK and have a Brown Turky tree about 2m high and 4m spread, The breber crop of 10 large figs - 9cm long by 7cm diameter, vey juicy but not much flavour. now start of August, I await the main crop most of which are only slightly bigger than size of your thumb. Plenty of rain here and average temperature day 22C night 15C. Day light from 5am to 8 pm.
I was hesitant to get a brown Turkey fig but after watching your videos I had to get one. I’m in Maryland and this is the BT. It looks very condensed group of leaves. Should I keep it as is or trim back the leaves? I tried sending you a picture but it’s not letting me.

I learned, kind of the hard way out here in the Mojave desert, that water is very precious to all living things, regardless of where they have to get it. That includes fruits and vegetables in gardens. One of the simplest ways of keeping birds out of your plants is to provide them with an easier to get at source of water. Sure it won't stop it 100%, however, if you place a few fresh vessels of water around your plants, keep it topped off, not only will the damage to the plant go way down, but the population of ants and other bugs will as well. ;-) Use a 50+ gallon water trough, keep it in the shade, and you can plant some water spinich, among other things. ;-)
That's a great suggestion. We are incorporating several water tanks on the new property. We've started with a couple of smaller 20 gallon tanks for now, but will be adding more as we expand onto more of the acreage. Wasn't aware that it would make a difference in ant popluations.

Great question Ron. We've tried that in the past and the main problem with it is the very fast growth of the tree during it's ripening season. We had to cut multiple branches off that grew through the netting over the 30 day ripening period. Now you are talking about mosquito net, so that may not be a problem. We were using 1/2" bird netting.
Wow, your trees are beautiful! I am in Mesa, the Black Jack fig tree I planted 2 years ago is onlyabout 3' and has 2 green figs that don't seem to be getting any bigger or ripening. Should I be fertilizing it? I am so looking forward to a harvest like yours!
Hey Linda! Well, we just posted a video on our Black Jack fig today and that tree is about the same age as yours. It's hard to say what may be going on with your tree, but at this point it definitely needs to be fertilized as it's old enough for that. Also, make sure it's well mulched (either wood chips or something similar) and getting regular deep watering (we water our fig trees 3X/week with 36 gallons each round or over 100 gallons a week during the summer). According to and old cajun man, he said if you have figs that bear a second crop but dont turn or ripen. He said if you have some oak leaves, put some in a cast iron pot that has a handle on it, and light them on fire so that they smoke...let the smok go through the figs and they will finish ripening. Something in the chemical make up of the oak leaves and the cast iron cause a chemical reaction and they will turn.
In my culture we use the latex on our skin in case if we have skin eczema and we put it on our hair if we have psoriasis, I don’t recommend putting a lot of it cause it’s burning but it really works. We need to do more studies and research about that.

You can grow it either way, but I would maintain a short trunk (no more than 3' high) to keep the canopy lower to the ground to shade the soil and trunk.
Hi Mel. We've dried some figs and yes it does condense the sweet flavor, but they also taste different. We've also frozen some, but they come out like mush when you thaw them. However, we made a batch of fig sherry from the frozen figs and so far it's coming along amazing!
Is it possible to do something other than organza?? I tried to put tanglefoot and it melted, ran down the padding I had, and killed one of my young figs, the others have bark fudge coming off and struggling
Hey Hannah. You can also net the tree, but in our experience it's difficult, because the tree grows right through the netting and you wind up having to cut branches. Organza bags have been our best bet.
Hi it's a great video clip I live in the Philippines and as you know we have torrential rain that sometime last for threeweeks no kidding. I have five brown turkeys in ground and five in pots. They fruit a lot of super tasty and sweet figlets. My problem is in the eye section of the Figs. It cracks open wide exposing the insides. It rains hard and when the sun comes up if ever during a respitethis time of rain that's when they'd open up. I eat a lot of them thou coz they tast glorious. Hahaha really. They'd do. Can you pls pls give advice on my situation. Thanks a lot
Hey Ynakirde! Boy, the Philippines, that's a whole different world from what we're used to here in the desert Southwest. I'm not a fig expert, but I do know that we have to keep very consistent watering on our trees or we have problems with the water content in the figs. If they dry out the figs do the same (this happens to us a lot) and if we add water they fill with more water (we've had a few crack when we get the occasional early summer storm that adds heavy water to them). Have you experimented with pulling the potted plants under a structure so you can control the amount of water getting to them? Oh and yes the do taste really good!
You are more like my area. We get alot of rain. Problem is you are getting too much rain that is causing them to split. Only way i can think that may help you is to cover them esp the root system to stop the flooding effect they are essentially getting due to the heavy rains. Or maybe bring in the trees in pots under a covered roof if possible during the rainy season.

Hey Regia. Brown turkey figs do have very aggressive roots, but that is partially dependent on the climate. We're in an ideal climate for them in 9b, but it's not the case for you there. That being said, less aggressive growers generally do better in pots. Either way, it's worth a shot in my opinion!
A fig tree will bear fruit in a pot. Make it a big one. I have not observed fig roots to be aggressive. They are very tough, in that they will grow in the harshest environments, but fruit bearing figs (as distinct from some ornamental and shade varieties) are not going to uplift your paths and throw suckers everywhere. They do need a lot of room, however, as they tend to spread outwards. In any case you can cut them back as hard as you like without harming them. I have done so routinely (in Western Australia) and they love it. Prune them so that they bear fruit where you can reach it. Keep the top chopped down. A neighbour of mine prunes his like a disc - a bare trunk to about 4 feet, then a circle of branches, and a flat top at about 8 feet. It works great, and you can throw a net over it very easily.
Can't help with the birds, but if you put Grant's For Ants (ant bait containers) under each tree, by the trunk, you will soon have no ants around your trees. They come in multi-packs, you must follow the directions, and handle them carefully, but they work perfectly..

Wow, those are some fantastic size fruit for your Breba. Our lack of rainfall really makes it difficult to get large, juicy figs.

that has not worked for me at all. i have 2 stock tank ponds and the fruit trees near them get decimated by ants and birds.

The Brown Turkey can be a very nice size fig. They will vary a bit, but the early crop typically has the biggest fruit.
In the regions there are 9 hot months. Is it better to grow on a single stem or on a number of stems to shade its walls? The region is southern Libya.
You can grow it either way, but I would maintain a short trunk (no more than 3' high) to keep the canopy lower to the ground to shade the soil and trunk.
