Burnham has a down-at-heel feel to it, which could put snooty people off, but accept it for what it is and you could be charmed. The high street looks unexceptional, scruffy even, but look closer and appreciate how many people are actually shopping on it and, as you say Nicola, note the large number of independent retailers, which you would not find in the many indentikit high streets elsewhere in the country. Just to highlight one store that you did not mention - Julians. It's a bric-a-brac shop that goes on forever - excellent to browse stuff you might not have seen anywhere else before. Burnham has the best choice of pet shops compared to anywhere else I have ever been. Everyone in the shops and cafes are very friendly. You could have also mentioned that the beach is a cycle path that goes on for eight miles all the way to Brean. You can ride a bike on the beach, paths and quiet roads all the way from Burnham Pier to Weston Pier and on to Clevedon Pier. That's about 25 miles. If ever Burnham was gentrified it would lose its character and independence and would die. It is what it is. Accept its wrinkles and its blemishes and you will grow to appreciate it because under its weathered skin it is sweet.
@@cogsnbanjo thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts. Very interesting to hear and I agree. You have to look past places needing a lick of paint sometimes…especially by the coast where they need repainting every year or so because of the harsh sea air. Yes there’s certainly lots more to explore in the area and the High Street and surrounding area is very full of such a huge variety of businesses and services, unlike many other places. I also hope it retains its independent spirit.
Julians is a great shop - stuff you need and would buy for yourself but fantastic for gifts and unusual goods. If my memory serves me well it was started up in the High Street having branched out from the former Potter's Market in Abingdon Street - a late 60's to the 70's haunt for all manner of gifts and trinkets - used to go there for love beads, joss sticks, Athena posters and compulsory patchouli oil perfume in tiny brown bottles.
