Its funny how spotify is designed for you to discover music but the algorithm is so garbage that the app actually doesn't make his function, meanwhile you have youtube that straight up just throws awesome albums at your face every once in a while, like a good friend saying "hey bro, listen to this, you gonna like it".
YT Music is very similar. Best thing to do is discover music on YT then add it so you just play it YT Music. I think YT Premium is 100 times better than Spotify. Mostly because you get UA-cam + YT Music.
I had the same complaint with apple music. It just felt like I listened to the same stuff, and even if I got new songs recommended to me, I never liked them. Spend a bit of time on youtube though, and you find hidden obscure stuff from ages ago.
UA-cam remains the pre-eminent resource for 'organic' music discovery precisely _because_ its utility in this regard is essentially an afterthought; unlike Spotify, which was predicated on nothing else and has therefore, inevitably succumbed to enshittification (and could never hold a candle to the glory days of Last.fm, even still).
I'll never fucking get over it. Mindblowing in the best possible way - within everybody is a potential sonic world shaped by their upbringing, experiences, positive and negative. It's incredible.
very particular 2000's vibe; cityscapes, modernist architecture, public transport, the last time you smelled that strong petrol odour from cars, trimmed grass, yellow street lights breaking the night. A transition period in the telecom age, digitalisation and internet. Technological optimism. Globalisation. This catches a whole zeitgeist, as Echostar, Bowery Electric, Jan Jalinek, and Bark Psychosis. Truly a magnificent album, amazing find. Thank you for making it available

I was in my 20s during this time and the air itself smelled like hope and wonder. I was an exchange student in Osaka, wandering neon streets with my MD player, dreaming of my future. Now, I’m a professor at a large Japanese university and middle age presses on me heavily. The body breaks, the mind slows, the hope fades and the realization that you can only ever experience things the first time once makes you grieve as you run out of new horizons to explore. So it’s nice to have this and things like it, to call up old memories and still the ripples of Life. Thank you for this!!
A human mind can never run out of horizons to explore. The world is too vast. The more you learn, the more you realize that you know nothing. The only thing you can run out of is your will to explore. Your passion. But you can always rediscover it. It's never too late to try new things, to learn new stuff. It might take a little bit longer, than it used to, but that's a thing you've got to accept. Your mind might move slower, but it still moves, it still yearns to learn. It wants to fail and discover ways to succeed. You can do it. Don't give up. Cherish the gift of life that chance brought upon us.
Dear UA-cam, THIS is what I want in my music recommendations, those sounds made by electronic and analog tools that aren't used that much anymore, sounds that can be stamped with a year on their forehead. SOOTHING
This type of art actually has a silly name: Gen X Soft Club. It was visible through so much stuff produced in the late 90s and early 2000s, the technological turn of the millennium. It was especially prominent with promotional stuff like album covers. Some other good examples of album art in this genre are Make Yourself by Incubus, The Madding Crowd by Nine Days, Reel Time Canvas by Camden, and Midnight Drive by Ruxpin. It's a big part of the Y2K Aesthetic.
Man, that first song was a journey. Starting with minimal ambient sounds, then a chill Latin jazzy sampled beat comes in, building to a total synth freakout. I'm hooked! Electronic music was so cool in this era.
Time to imagine music in an era where the infinite wasn’t immediately possible. The chasm, then, between what is and what could be was human genius and ingenuity.
This made me appreciate life a lot more than I did before listening to it, the beauty of life is that you experience it once, and I’m glad to have said I listened to this at least this once
This is beautiful. Kind of feels like the intersection of Lemon Jelly and Towa Tei stylistically. It flirts with trip hop, sample collage and jungle. The cover art definitely goes hard too. Thank you youtube algo for this one :)
