Those old trucks are very hard on gas even with the two barrel carburetor I had three or four of them and could not keep gas in them the dodge 318 did not know what fuel economy was

To answer your questions about Mud Dobbers, they build the dirt clods forming those tubes then they get even busier. They lay an egg in the back of them then they're on a quest for certain spiders. They sting the spider but only to parilze them. The egg hatches and the larvae eats the spiders as they grow then bust through a thin exit wall of mud to escape. Loving what your doing now for years. Keep em coming. If ever you have to switch to the old style ignition system, do keep in mind it has to be accompanied by a vacuum advance style distributor. As for the transmission fluid, on a mopar, always be sure to check fluid levels whilst in neutral, the pump does not operate in park.

Nice job fellas! Remember that all Chrysler trucks, Jeeps, since way back(don't know the exact start date) have plastic fuel tanks. Any computer controlled vehicles really need a lot of body grounds also. Someone will love restoring that old truck.

Helpful tip. I've found it to be most beneficial to use unfolded cardboard to lay on under the vehicle. 1- It helps you to get under and up. 2- It keeps your clothing cleaner. Hope this helps. Truck Driver Ray ✝️

The reason for going thru so much gas is this : On the fuel filter there is a hose that comes off the side and goes to a return line back to the gas tank. So when running off of a external tank it is sending gas back to the main tank instead of the one you're using. Had that problem myself and found out the hard way, you should have noticed you fuel level raising on the gauge, if it works.

I was excited for this one when I saw the red dodge with that white aluminum camper top. My family had a 1987 short bed with a 225 slant six that we vacationed in through the 90s. White camper with a sliding glass and a weather gasket between truck and camper. Full size mattress in the bed with a custom bunk at the front and a custom wood box dad bolted to the frame for our luggage and coolers. From Indiana, we drove to VA, GA, TN, MI, and many other states and once to Canada. Mom, Dad and 7 kids. Roadside meals, hotels and many sights to see. This will be one of my favorite videos. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Great content as usual!

Never thought I'd see any potential in a plain old 80s era pickup, but I can imagine this thing with the patina retained, a mild lowering job, and nice period slotted mag wheels with big and little tires for some hot rod rake. I'd put a 4 barrel and some headers on the motor and maybe finish off with some signwriting on the doors and a Mexican blanket on the bench seat.

That plate you had, long rectangle one....does indeed hold the top of the radiator...has screws along the top portion above the grill and sets across the top of the radiator....kinda how you put it in the video. When you went to the Pickers, I saw a Ramcharger that would have the same setup likely as that truck for donor parts.....nice to see an old Dodge make it back on the road.

2 down falls I've ran into when working on an LA engine is timing chain and electrical. They run so long they stretch the chain and/or skip timing. Orrrr the electronics fail between the battery and the ignition/ spark unit. Best net is to delete the lean burn and diagnose from there. If not, there are plenty of videos explaining how to make power, to which you can take points from to make it run like new with out breaking head gaskets. Good job with it yall!

Dodge starters sound dreadful, but you can't knock em too much. I once drove home on the starter, in my 86 dodge. The fuel unit bit the dust, and thankfully the clutch didn't hinder the starter. I might have only been doing 5mph, but i was mighty impressed with that little motor. Miss that truck.

That old truck cleaned up well and it sounds like it runs well too. I'm just seeing this 6 months after you posted it. I'm guessing the fact that it's in Texas where trucks sell quickly, it's already sold to a new home. If I weren't in NJ I'd love to have it. We don't see trucks of that age here that aren't rustbuckets that are so bad that if you slam the door, it'll fall off the truck.

One of the few times I've seen a rescue on a vehicle so close to one I've owned. Had an '87 D150, same engine/trans, at some point somebody had gone really old school and put a points distributor in it, but no resistor so it was burning them up pretty quick. I left the distributor in but put in a Pertronix converter, no issues then. Also had to replace the ignition relay on the inner fender. Otherwise a great truck, comfortable ride.

You’re running on an external fuel tank . The fuel filter has a return line that returns fuel back to the fuel tank , so that’s why it seemed as if it was burning a lot of fuel , but actually was just cycling back to your main tank lol 😂
Hey what kind of transmission fluid did you fill it with ? I hear a lot of different varying answers . The Haynes repair manual says to use Mopar ATF +3 or ATF + 4 or an equivalent for 7176 ??

I have an 87 D150 with the 4 barrel 318 and the 727. The po had removed the computer and the air pump and could never get it to run right so he sold it to me. I replaced the original quadrajet with a 1406 Edlebrock. Much metter. Then removed the EGR valve, put a set of 318Magnum exhaust manifolds on with a full dual exhaust . (minus the cats) Still had trouble starting on occasion. Replaced that pesky ballast resister twice, the ignition module and finally replaced the the whole thing with the small cap HEI system. End of problem. Truck runs great and gets about 2 miles per gallon more than the factory says for the 2 barrel 318.

Those are tough trucks. I worked on a farm with a few of these and they never died, they may ride rougher than a tank, but they got the job done. I was thinking your fuel issue was a return line pumping back to the original tank, what did you have to do to use that tank again?

One of the many things I like about the older trucks and cars are the headlights. To replace one on that truck is likely under $25.00. With the newer stuff the headlights sub burn and if one is broken they are over $100.00 each. There are so many other things that are the same situation on the newer stuff.

Made me laugh when you said that starter spins for 30 seconds after you let off. Those are the old gear drive mopar starters for ya! They have a distinct sound to them!

Great video guys, love the first generation Dodge pickups, getting harder to find, especially up here in Canada. I really like it the way it is as an ol farm truck, but think it would also be cool lowered and mild custom.
