I've had only a handful of different epochs of youtubers over the last 15 years that I could watch and relax... and feel really de-stressed and calm... thanks Gerald 👍
Yes, this makes sense! Sometimes, over producing things is not necessary and it just brings in more stress! I'm glad Gerald found this new, more joyful format! ❤️
Just a note, the front dial is a massive improvement on the A7C which doesn't have one, and as an A7C owner that's one of the camera's biggest drawbacks for me. Very excited for this!
made me flow so much better when I set up my back dail to be aperture, with the native iso button and the main dail for shutter made me think all the buttons on the other camera are redundant given I wasn't changing setting too often for portraits and when shooting videos
Im a Canon R5C user, switched from Sony a few years ago (last Sony I had was A7RII, shot stills and 4K video with it) and it seems like they've improved so many things! I'm considering one of these compact cameras as an everyday carry. Although the specs seem quite similar to the R5C, I'm looking for something with less bulk. Thanks for the review!
I was scrolling down m subscriptions looking for your review on this and almost gave up and went to the next best thing. You're always the first person i go to for reviews, it's just quick and concise, your video can be 20+ minutes and it still doesn't seem dragged
I would very much enjoy the very nerdy camera heating tests with Steve and crew. One thing I'd be interested in is how much having a monitor connected to the HDMI ports affects things. At least for me if I'm running cameras for a long time (2+ hours) it's for streaming with HDMI capture cards and that's where cameras tend to overheat for me.
I really like the new studio setup with the notes and the new table! + the 3rd detail camera shot. Although I don't like the camera 2 setup with the "guest chair". It kinda throws me off, because nobody is sitting there so I don't know where to look. I get to see more of the room, but the framing is so different to the talking head cam that it feels very "empty". Maybe change the position if you don't have a guest so it matches better. Keep it up!
finished the video. Seeing the empty chair made me exspect you got a guest, but you didn't. Maybe I'm the only one, but I would have prefered a table with a fake plant or something else instead. (of course if you have a guest you could use the chair)
Yes, absolutely jarring. Overall, I like the new studio space (though I think I prefer the deeper, more complex shot of the old place, but might just take some getting used to), but that angle was so weird and threw me off every time. The composition is just so awkward without a guest here, the TV is just not in the right position for the "Let's pixel peep together" - which is probably why it ended up not being used for it - and I feel my eyes have to dart around, finding what to look at, every time. Nothing but love for Gerald though, I am sure it will be worked out as the new setup evolves.
Ah, Gerald, I love how off the cuff the intro is, and how uniquely Geraldesque you blend top notch video, audio and informational quality with a bit of a "I’m confused by this new set" vibe :D Been looking forward for the official announcement of these cameras and I’m glad to see you got to make a review. Yours is the first I clicked on. =) And btw: glad to see you’re back to making videos after moving studios!
If that chair there would be for special guests, I hope we see someone like Camera Conspiracies some time. Been watching you for years and I always love these new camera tests. Thank you for all you do with these!
Great reviews! The new lens looks great and improves on it's predecessor in almost every function. The A7CR is a great compact camera and packs 61 megapixels of resolution into a very small form factor, an ideal camera for hiking, cycling or general touring.
I would love to see some thermal testing with GN. Living in Arizona, it's really tough to figure out what's going to be able to meet needs. Obviously I don't expect to be able to record outside here with the camera body in direct sunlight very long, but we routinely have ambient temperatures in the shade of 110+ and even at night, it can easily still be over 100 for several hours.
Since I had two memory card failures in the last 6 months, there's no way for me to ever purchase a camera that's meant to be taken seriously with just one card slot, so these will never be a real consideration. And the EVF and screen specs matching and also being worse than Fuji X-T1 from 2014 doesn't really help. But good video Gerald, I like this style and your new place also seems pretty cool.
Finally. I've been waiting to upgrade from the a7c, the added slomo and breathing comp are going to be great. I also like that they moved the port up, the USB and HDMI were too close together and kinda fiddly. Also hopefully it has the streaming prompt once you plug it in, which I really wanted.
Great video Gerald! My one comment is that, as a hybrid Sony shooter, I find it so annoying that they keep releasing cameras that feel slightly incomplete (cropped/binned 4K, rolling shutter, 4.2.2 in some modes, 4.2.0 in others, etc) instead of just completing the camera, even at higher price points (A7RV). I also find it inexcusable that they don’t update firmware on already released cameras. That tells me that they see their customers as a dollar sign, rather than as a community. Hoping someone from Sony reads this ✌🏼
You obviously have no idea how electronic processing works if you’re asking for the a7rv to readout a 61mp sensor with no rolling shutter, especially at that size. No camera with low rolling shutter has even close to 30 mp with that size of a surface area (full frame)
My decision is now harder. Still running an A7iii and an a6500. Part of me wants to hold out for the A7Siv, part of me wants an A7iv, and now I'm leaning towards the A7C2. Man I wish they had a slightly better viewfinder than the A7iii in it, it'd make the decision a lot easier.
Although they are better cameras under all the aspects, I still don't think they're worth the upgrade over the A7III ( I also own one of these ). It's a matter of what you use them for. If you do stills, you might be good with waiting for the A7V, if you do video, well ... S-Cine and 10bit are very compelling indeed. I still don't understand how the viewfinder is a deal breaker though. I barely ever use it and even if it were worse than it is now, I still wouldn't see it as a problem.
I use the viewfinder all the time for taking and reviewing shots, particularly because the screen's sharpness/color rendition is pretty poor/misleading. And I've been doing a lot more video lately. A7Cii is extremely tempting.@@rtudor
How the 4k 60p in crop factor mode on the a7cII compare to 4k 60p on a FX30/a6700 when regarding low light? are they virtually the same or a FF sensor is still better even in crop mode?
Off topic.. but your comment reminds me.. your Gamers Nexus studio tour was the best one of those videos you have done.. Great Channel.. love Your gear reviews..
Getting a camera in advance is always a conflict of interest, but it's hard to resist early access to a camera. So it's understandable. Enjoying your reviews, and keep in mind the context :)
I prefer my S5IIX over A7IV (I own) and A7CII for video ... wish 6k open gate is 10bit 4:2:2 :D. Nothing spectacular about this new bodies, but if someone does not own A7IV and want camera just for content creation might be a good choice. I still want my 2 SD slots and full size HDMI.
If you have the A7IV or A7RV already, its definitely not worth it especially as a photographer. Reminds me of when Sony had the A7R2 and came out with the A7R3 that had minimal upgrades, same sensor called it a new camera. We are tracking on a bad pattern.
That front dial/scroll wheel on the grip is not carried over from the A7C, thats new and very welcome. I use the A7C when out and about/ traveling more than my A7Riv, the biggest miss is that front dial on the grip, really pleased to see it on the examples you have in this video. 10 bit video woohoo! I can see the upgrade being a no-brainer from the A7C to the A7C II but not so sure about the A7CR. I use my A7Riv when I need the reliability and reassurance of the two card slots. The A7CR gives that up so I would pass on it. ...Nice new set - very Late Late Show ;-) - Nice humble opening too - keep it going mate
I wonder if someone can help me here. I’m currently running a 3 camera setup for shooting content. One FX3 - A7S3 and then I used to use the A73 but found it to overheat super fast compared to my old A7S2 so my C cam is an A7S2 I wondered if anyone could give me some ideas on what to update the C cam to…. I could get rid of the A73 and S2 and replace with another cam, but I’m not sure what to look at now because there seems to be so many options. I need to shoot 4K 24 for relatively long periods. Just wondered if anyone could give me some ideas what to look at or any advice because there’s too much info out there these days and far more experienced people than me! Thanks
Solid as always Gerald. At this point, a new camera comes out.... I see what Gerald thinks... then I buy or don't buy. A7Cii is gonna be my new A-Cam (and only camera). Stoked for the smaller setup out in the mountains.
Great video Gerald, you're always first watch with new releases. And if only Sony would update the a7IV with these new video features, like LUT support, it wouldn't feel like I’m wasting my money with buying new camera bodies..
Gerald, excellent reviews as always. I love the new studio and you are managing it way better than I would (I struggle with one camera!). I just ordered the A74 (arrives tomorrow), (had the A7C but sold it for the A74) thinking I was going use that as my primary hybrid camera and would look at the A7Cii as the backup camera (I like the lightweight for travel!). Now, one of the things I shoot is the Sony 200-600mm lens for wildlife and that small A7C was just too small when using it. Now, on my Tamron 28-75mm (the largest thing I use with it), I was fine. I now have some options to think about! Keep the A74 and get the A7Cii for travel. Or, send back the A74, get the Sony A7RV for my primary (because of educators discount I can get the A7RV for $3300) and then the A7Cii as the travel/B camera. Or, crazy, probably, but get both the A7Cii and the A7Cr?
I love the new set and vibe. The microphone and second chair has a very tonight show kind of vibe. One’s mileage may vary, but you may want to consider having a static logo on the screen when it’s not being reference. It definitely pulled my focus a few times. Again, YMMV Keep up the great work! I’m not even a Sony user, but I enjoy your videos.
Great Review Gerald, but not a fan of the second angle as it causes us to have to "re-find" you when you switch angles; essentially because you're in a totally different position in the frame. IMO I rather have you cut between zoom in/outs as that keeps you in the same position in the frame and it's easy to keep track of you and watch you without difficulty.
I literally just picked up a second a7iv and now I'm out of the country and can't return it to get the a7cii. That being said, the 7iv is amazing and I don't regret having it, but I would have preferred the weight savings and smaller body size of the new release. I also never use redundant shooting so having only one card slot would not be a big deal for me.
This is a very impressionistic review. No point dismissing the A7C as a comparison and just focusing on the A7IV and A7V, after all they are C cameras.
Thanks for the TL;DR on the cameras, Gerald. As someone using the a6400 and currently shopping for the A7IV, I might just wait until the A7CII is locally available. Also: new studio setup looks neat! Would love to see Potato Jet on the guest chair :)
Congratulations on the new studio. I’d prefer the rear screen off or out of view on the tight shot. The 441 mike for guests is a classic piece of equipment.
Assuming that it is lighter as well as smaller than the current larger Sony bodies, the A7CR and its big sensor would make for a pretty sweet travel rig!
So hyped that Gerald showed back up on the feed. The new setup was a little jarring because I was just watching the FX3 video. The studio was different but the Gerald was the same, so I found it useful and strangely entertaining as always. The guest chair needs a purple pillow, maybe with a sequin face in it.
Your content is always great man. I have to say I think the new setup (especially the wide TV angle) immediately made it look like you were on a green screen and like the TV side was part of a set extension, and the flat framing of that shot looks very much like a low budget public television talkshow broadcast. Side angle was great. And functionally, it's very cool. Just commenting in the interest of giving test reactions! :)
I've always said you were always like the Gamers Nexus of camera tech UA-camr to me, and look at what's happening now. Love it. Any chance any of the 1080p modes are oversampled from a higher resolution?
LOVE the new studio!!!! Clean! But if I may add a small constructive criticism of the camera angle swapping happening on your A-cam. The main A-Cam is a great angle, but why keep switching to the angle that shows an empty chair. It made it difficult to focus on you and the products on the desk. If you had a guess or a co-host I could see this angle working. But if nobody was there, I felt no need to show it. Instead, would've been nice to have tight shots of the products or b-roll footage of the product. Regardless, sick sick sick studio! Keep up the good work.
Hmmm I don't like this setup on the wide lens you almost disappear in the right corner bring back the old set up 😢 If you could maybe bit more tight on all the cam in front maybe it works. Don't take it personal I just enjoyed watching those videos more with the old setup.
Hi Gerald, can you share what battery pack/power bank did you use for power delivery? Is there any minimum requirement to achieve no battery drainage while using the camera? Thanks
I do like that now Sony and Canon have grip extensions, I wish the other camera makers would follow suit. I also think it'd be really neat if they made an battery that was physically longer (i.e. extended height and capacity) to make use of the extra space that otherwise goes to waste under the battery door, if you're likely to just keep the grip on all the time anyway
Thanks for the great overview. It would be great to hear your thoughts on the A6700 compared to the a7c II for intermediate photographers where value is important.
And the difference in quality with a6700 w/apsc lenses vs a7c2 w/ff lenses for hobby photographers. Honestly a draw of apsc for me has always been the reach at a lower price point (wildlife on vacation) and its smaller (I'm a small person who ends up using my phone bc it's with me) . I also love shooting portraits
Great job on the video Gerald! Thanks for making it. I liked this format. I know it will only get better the more you become used to your new studio space. I dig the front shot where we see just the corner of the tv and the mic pointed out towards the guest chair. And what a nice angle for your product showcase shot.
Loving the new setup Gerald. I did a 30 min video on the GM II just for photography. You mention the focus breathing doesn't matter much because of the compensation. But that's for video :) For photography it's actually a huge deal! Especially for techniques like focus stacking. I absolutely love that his lens has almost no focus breathing at 16mm! :) Anyway, love the video again and good luck with getting comfortable with the new setup :D
Just want to say thank you for the disclosures and ethics statement. As a viewer, I do feel conflicted seeing all the content coming straight out of the Sony Kando Trip (but that might also be partially FOMO), so I appreciate the transparency.
an unsolicited critique of the wide cam - personally not a fan of how it cuts off the edge of the chair (and the cameras on the table cut it close to frame edge which makes it feel kinda cramped). Talk shows usually have the entire chair with the interview subject around the thirds line, which is where you're at, but not the chair. You're also sitting pretty high up, and I'm curious to see how that'll look with an interview subject. Might be a bit better if a bit wider? Can't tell without being there. I like the lighting though. (And a p.s. small thing that prob doesn't bother anybody but me, but the lines on the background on the right of frame aren't parallel to frame edge. It's not as bad on your close cam, but it's still not quite aligned. Looks like you tried to align it to the table, but the lines on the wall are a better reference if those lines are parallel to the wall framing)
as a measurement technician and PC nerd that alsom happens to be a photographer and camera nerd, I can only get a smile when I hear that camera heat dissipation testing is getting a team such as Gamers Nexus to help get the proper methodology and good testing practices.
I am nothing BUT hyped for that !
The definitive camera review channel!
Hands down
Using the TV to assess overheating/record times with face tracking is a genius idea
I've had only a handful of different epochs of youtubers over the last 15 years that I could watch and relax... and feel really de-stressed and calm... thanks Gerald 👍
Am I the only one that loves this unscripted video style from Gerald? It feels more “real” if that makes any sense.
Totally agree it shows how good he is! Trust me from a UA-camr this is so hard!
Yes, this makes sense! Sometimes, over producing things is not necessary and it just brings in more stress! I'm glad Gerald found this new, more joyful format! ❤️
natural*
I like a bit of both tbh.
I'm tempted aswell
Wasn't expecting the show host desk and guest start chair, I'm so ready for the new Gerald Undone content that must be coming soon!!!
*fingers crossed* for Conan O'Brien as first guest.
Dude, I am absolutely loving the "late night" studio setup. So excited to see what sort of content you're able to make in the future.
I was scrolling down m subscriptions looking for your review on this and almost gave up and went to the next best thing. You're always the first person i go to for reviews, it's just quick and concise, your video can be 20+ minutes and it still doesn't seem dragged

I get to see more of the room, but the framing is so different to the talking head cam that it feels very "empty". Maybe change the position if you don't have a guest so it matches better.

finished the video. Seeing the empty chair made me exspect you got a guest, but you didn't. Maybe I'm the only one, but I would have prefered a table with a fake plant or something else instead.
(of course if you have a guest you could use the chair)
Was thinking the same thing !
I laughed every time I switched to that view. I think it's hilarious but makes zero sense as a serious angle when there's no guest
Yes, absolutely jarring. Overall, I like the new studio space (though I think I prefer the deeper, more complex shot of the old place, but might just take some getting used to), but that angle was so weird and threw me off every time. If you don't know where to look at, why did you click on the video?
You look at the host and/or the product he is reviewing.
Ah, Gerald, I love how off the cuff the intro is, and how uniquely Geraldesque you blend top notch video, audio and informational quality with a bit of a "I’m confused by this new set" vibe :D
Been looking forward for the official announcement of these cameras and I’m glad to see you got to make a review. Yours is the first I clicked on. =)
And btw: glad to see you’re back to making videos after moving studios!
Man, I always dig your reviews. Thorough, thoughtful, and no slo-mo B.S. on skateboards or pouring coffee. Thanks.
😂 agree ..
If that chair there would be for special guests, I hope we see someone like Camera Conspiracies some time.
Been watching you for years and I always love these new camera tests. Thank you for all you do with these!
Five million videos on these two cameras in my feed, this is the only one I need to watch. Nice job.
Great reviews! The new lens looks great and improves on it's predecessor in almost every function. The A7CR is a great compact camera and packs 61 megapixels of resolution into a very small form factor, an ideal camera for hiking, cycling or general touring.
Chair next to desk ... Are we having the late night show with Gerald Undone?
Late Night with Canon O’Brien
I would love to see some thermal testing with GN. Living in Arizona, it's really tough to figure out what's going to be able to meet needs. +1 as an A7SIII owner annoyed that my $4k camera isn't getting firmware updates.
You obviously have no idea how electronic processing works if you’re asking for the a7rv to readout a 61mp sensor with no rolling shutter, especially at that size. No camera with low rolling shutter has even close to 30 mp with that size of a surface area (full frame)
I'm glad that Sony is continuing this line. I got the original A7C and it's a fantastic camera for travel.

I'd love to see open gate on Sony. I have 3 Sony's and a GH5, love open gate for shoot once but make long and short form from a single shot.
0:08 Gerald Undone. America's new favorite late-nite talk-show host.
ZV-E1 should really be called A7CS! Sony messed up their naming scheme a little bit imo.
From now on I will demand an eyelash test from every reviewer. You set a new standard my friend.
How the 4k 60p in crop factor mode on the a7cII compare to 4k 60p on a FX30/a6700 when regarding low light? are they virtually the same or a FF sensor is still better even in crop mode?

Been considering picking up a Sony camera. These are tempring.
Even though it's a gear review... I'm genuinely excited everytime you upload:))
If I am only interested in filming video, is there any advantage at all in getting the a7CR over the a7C II?
Great Video.
Why can’t they just use the USB C instead of HDMI like a Mac does for external displays?
If you have the A7IV or A7RV already, its definitely not worth it especially as a photographer. Reminds me of when Sony had the A7R2 and came out with the A7R3 that had minimal upgrades, same sensor called it a new camera. We are tracking on a bad pattern.
A7rv is the GOAT

You're always the first for me in a new camera day!
Does it have full mechanical shutter? A7c has electronic front curtain only.
I wonder if someone can help me here.
I’m currently running a 3 camera setup for shooting content.
One FX3 - A7S3 and then I used to use the A73 but found it to overheat super fast compared to my old A7S2 so my C cam is an A7S2
I wondered if anyone could give me some ideas on what to update the C cam to…. I could get rid of the A73 and S2 and replace with another cam, but I’m not sure what to look at now because there seems to be so many options.

Solid as always Gerald. At this point, a new camera comes out.... I see what Gerald thinks... then I buy or don't buy. A7Cii is gonna be my new A-Cam (and only camera). Stoked for the smaller setup out in the mountains.
I love the new set. All you need is another "side kick" chair and a band to be a late night show.
I understand the idea of a "compact" camera. But when watching this, I know what a value the Panasonic DC-S5 II is.
Great video Gerald, you're always first watch with new releases. And if only Sony would update the a7IV with these new video features, like LUT support, it wouldn't feel like I’m wasting my money with buying new camera bodies..
I hope the rV gets the new software stuff soon but when looking at how they abandoned the sIII and a1 i highly doubt it getting updates

I'm pretty happy for the 16-35 as I didn't buy into the first one but have developed a greater need for the focal range.
It was great seeing you at Kando and this was an excellent amount of information, thanks for that.
Congratulations on the new studio. I’d prefer the rear screen off or out of view on the tight shot. The 441 mike for guests is a classic piece of equipment.
Oh my god the talk show setup is fantastic! Gerald O’Brien over here 👈
💜🙏
Came here for the cameras, stayed for Gerald's giddiness over his new studio.
Seems like the viewfinder resolution is the same as the A6700 for both these new cameras? I'd been hoping for improved a7CR viewfinder, at least.
Can’t wait to see the new studio!!!!
Nice job. As a landscape photographer whose #1 used lens is the 16-35, definitely worth the upgrade. Thanks for making me spend more money.
Gerald has the throwback set. He's Conan O'Brien now.
Love the new studio!
Could be lighting related.
What is the significant good and bad of a7cr?
Congrats for the new studio. You are the guy!
The A7C was always Sony's underrated gem! Hopefully used prices of the MK1 will drop now!👍👍👍
you can buy mine! :)
Loving the new desk! Looking forward to the tour VOD.
Like the new format, Gerald!
Love the non-scripted! Great video
As a long term Sony user I'm far more excited about the lenses Tamron are bringing out currently to be honest! Thanks for your review.
Thank you so much for reviewing the lens, Gerald. I thought maybe it didn't get released based on the other UA-camrs videos out there.
I've always said you were always like the Gamers Nexus of camera tech UA-camr to me, and look at what's happening now. Love it. Any chance any of the 1080p modes are oversampled from a higher resolution?
I do love my 16-35 but having the it be lighter weight was what I was looking for
LOVE the new studio!!!!
Pixel peeping part was the best! It should be earlier in the video, because not many people are doing it. CA is much less visible in GM II. GJ!
Hmmm I don't like this setup on the wide lens you almost disappear in the right corner bring back the old set up 😢
If you could maybe bit more tight on all the cam in front maybe it works.
Don't take it personal I just enjoyed watching those videos more with the old setup.
Can’t wait for the Gerald undone late night interviews
The new set is nice. That screensaver is a little distracting though.
Does the a7CR have something like real-time wireless backup to mitigate the lack of dual SD cards?
"Cameras beat lenses for engagement." Huh, that's actually really surprising. Lenses have so much more subjective things to talk about.
Hi Gerald, can you share what battery pack/power bank did you use for power delivery? Is there any minimum requirement to achieve no battery drainage while using the camera? Thanks
I am wondering if the A7c II has this "product shot" feature ? Thanks Gerald
Love the new setup!! I will copy it for my studio. Thanks.
Great info here, Gerald! As always thanks for being so open and honest.
Love the new studio! Great to hear your thoughts on the new gear as always.
I'm impressed with him going to Steve for methodology and testing ideas 😮
Thanks for the great overview. It would be great to hear your thoughts on the A6700 compared to the a7c II for intermediate photographers where value is important.
I second this.
About time they updated the a7c!!
Digging the new setup mate, can't wait to see the studio tour.
I would like to know if the A7C2 can use eye detect autofocus while also using the connect to smartphone function, which currently the A7C cannot.
Congrats to 400k!
Wow… you are an excellent presenter delivering a huge amount of useful information… as always. Thanks for sharing!
Just want to say thank you for the disclosures and ethics statement. As a viewer, I do feel conflicted seeing all the content coming straight out of the Sony Kando Trip (but that might also be partially FOMO), so I appreciate the transparency.
Gotta say that I **LOVE THAT DESK, BRUH**...
an unsolicited critique of the wide cam - personally not a fan of how it cuts off the edge of the chair (and the cameras on the table cut it close to frame edge which makes it feel kinda cramped).
