So value wise wouldn't it be easier to just buy an official Xbox controller and spend a few bucks on a phone grip for it and just use Bluetooth?

Depends on availability and what Xbox controller you're working with. They're typically $70 on their own around here, and pairing with Bluetooth means each has a separate battery to manage. Having it all in one made things a lot simpler for me.
