  • A cab forward road engine and two cab forward helpers climb to Cascade Summit with a freight train. The helpers are cut out, turned, and return light to Oakridge. This model railroad layout is set the in the Oregon Cascades, circa 1950s.
    The lead locomotive and mid-train helper (4275 and 4292) are Intermountain Railways AC-12s. The trailing helper (4120) is an AC-4 by Broadway Limited Imports

    Thanks trackspike64. That is a very nice thing to say. I used ordinary interior latex house paint (thinned somewhat) from Ace Hardware for the basic color. Then I applied thin washes of various acrylic colors from Hobby Lobby. Next, I used thin washes of india ink in crevasses and cracks to emphasize them. I also used very thin black paint to deepen shadows. Finally I dry brushed white to bring out highlights and give a weathered rock effect. I operate the layout occasionally.

    Having worked for Sp as a brakeman in the early 1950,s the helpers cut away from the train went around the wye and shuved the train together.

    Nicely done, from the lumber loads, detail inside the tunnels, operation, everything! cheers!

  • @billr991
    @billr991  12 років тому

    @stationmaster12 Thanks! The lumber loads are resin castings of the lumber stacks without the bracing. The masters for the lumber stacks were made from pieces of stripwood glued together with yellow carpenter's glue. The bracing was made individually for each flatcar by putting each lumber stack on the car and gluing each brace in place. That gives an exact fit to each car's stake pockets. Google "resin casting" for more info about resin casting.

    @Doompanzer1943 Thank you for the kind words. The yard trackage was the first part of the layout that I built, but it is still one of the least finished parts of the layout. That is the reason It normally does not appear my videos. I do intend to finish it -- maybe after the upper level is done and I get some backdrops painted. And of course there will always be more trees needed. Bill R.

    Fantastic layout. You believe in the same design concepts that I do. Not a thing wrong with multiple tracks crossing the same visual area if they are separated by enough scenery and elevation change. These layout types are hard to design in a conventional manner because much of the track doubles back on itself and keeps crossing over lower tracks but, if you want to get the most out of a given space, go vertical. I love helper operations as well. Great concept. Great execution. Beautiful modeling.

    @sym290 The AC-12s are Intermountain cab forwards, run 2. I have changed the original motors for Mashima 1833 motors and loosened the electrical pickup wipers on the drivers.
    Intermountain says that the problems with run 2 will be fixed in run 3. Given my positive experiences in dealing with them in the past, I'm inclined to believe that this is true.

    Bill, great video! I must say that your vidiographer skills have signigicantly inceased. The combination of still camera, panning camera and mobil camera along with your editing have created a great video. I like gong through the tunnels and hearing the sounds of the wheels.

    The cabforwards didn't burn coal. They burned a thick heavy form of oil that was relatively inexpensive at the time. The oil tank in the tender was, if I recall correctly, both heated and pressurized so the fuel oil could be brought forward to the firebox via a fuel line.

    Bill is right, the Cab Forwards were oil-fired, the oil was low-pressurized to send the fuel to the firebox. This design wouldn't have worked otherwise. The majority of SP's steam engines were oil-fired anyway, as were other western railroads.

    Bill, I have been watching your videos for a few months now, I have to say that yours is one of the most impressive layouts I have ever seen! I love big steam of the 40's and 50's (Epee Cab forwards and UP big boys) and the fact that you run so many cab forwards staggers me! (nothing more cool than triple headed ACs tacking the mountains!) On a final note, this video showed some of your yard, is it a new addition to the layout and are you going to decorate it in detail? Love the the turntable!

    Wow. Incredible job on the layout. So real-like. And equally incredible job on the video work. Superb all the way around! Hats off! Very cool too that you selected this unusual, special loco or this.
    One Q: Where in the OR Cascades is this layout set? I know those mountains pretty well, and some of the rail through them. Is this the line up the eastern side from CA, through Medford, then over to the western side at Grants Pass, and on north (e.g., into Glendale)? Or up from CA farther on the eastern side, through Klamath, basically parallels Rt. 97, through Chemult, divides just north of there, one branch going over Willamette Pass? Or some other route? Just interested to see if I recognize some stretches along your fabulous line! Great job. The realism is I think better than I've ever seen.

    • @billr991
      @billr991  9 років тому

      Cyclist0623 Thanks for the kind words. The layout is loosely based on the line from Oakridge over Willamette Pass (actually the railroad uses nearby Pengra Pass).

    • @Cyclist0623

      Bill Rogers After my question post, I found your website, with the great old SP mpa of the Portland-SF route, through Eugene, Oakridge, Willamette, Chemult, Klamath, etc That's the area, the pass from Westfir to Chemult, and the rail line, that I know best. No wonder I love this! Watching this it was as if, hold it! I think I've BEEN here! Makes want to get back to OR. Great job to be able to evoke such recognition and feelings from a model rail! I knew the cab-forwards, but never knew they ran on this line, nor from Oakridge up "the hill." Special loco for sure. And now I know, was run in a special place (at least for me). Thank you!
