  • The Southern Pacific unit train of 23,000-gallon tank cars was commonly known to railroad professionals and enthusiasts as the Oil Cans. It was a daily movement between Saco, CA north of Bakersfield to the Shell Oil refinery in Carson, CA south of Dolores Yard. This train operated with 6 sets of 12 or 13 cars making it 72 or 78 cars, respectively. The train averaged between 10,000 and 12,00 tons generally departing Bakersfield in the afternoon.
After the train is assembled it would make the short trek to Bakersfield for a crew change, then off to the Tehachapi Mountains and Mojave Desert.
I scaled down the car count so the train would not look out of proportion to the La Mesa Model Railroad Club exhibit. I assembled sets of 9 cars for a total of 54 cars. Included is a helper set and caboose. With head end, helpers and caboose, the train is just under 48 feet long.
The entire train is by Athearn (Ready to Roll & Genesis locomotives and rolling stock).
Several years ago, Athearn produced these tank cars in their Genesis line with various releases since then. Of the 54 cars, 20 of them were renumbered or did not have numbers already printed.
The motive power decoders are by Sountraxx.

Been to Tehachapi many times, used to camp at the signal on the southeast side of the loop in Walong so we could see it and highway 58 & down in Caliente.Seen the tanktrain several times there and this was just like being there again.Only things missing are the squealing flanges and the smell of creosote from warm ties! Absolutely fantastic, beautiful model railroad.

Watched them from Edison for a long time. Nice job of modeling them too.

I used to drive transport truck and I was always amazed at how it could be 95f in Bakersfield and sub zero in tehachapi

Absolutely beautiful, I missed going to the layout when I was in San Diego because they were still closed certain days for Covid-19. Hopefully next time.

Once again you've hit the nail on the head. Those are some fine and realistic looking trains.

    Beautiful!
I actually noticed the second engine is numbered 7556, and the front consists kinda resembled 7551 East that derailed in 1989.
    Still, a beautiful Train!

Those are Athearn Genesis Tanktrain tank cars. I think I counted 54 tank cars - probalby around $3200 in tank cars alone, not to mention 9 EMD SD engines outfitted with sound and DCC control! Impressive train! I managed to collect 12 of the original large logo GenesisTanktrain tankcars from the last run.

Was there for the "Ales & Rails" event before Christmas, wish this impressive train would have been on display. What an awesome train. Thanks for sharing

Now this is the way model railroading should be. Prototypical layout, prototypical train, prototypical operations.
