Blender modeling: try these 3 exercises to improve fast

- These are 3 Blender projects you should model for maximum learning value. Which one will you try?
Not all practice is created equal, so make sure you choose your projects wisely to get the most out of them.
🚲 Bicycle is a great one! Why? When modeling bikes in Blender, proportions are key - and they need to match human proportions. You will instantly know if you're not getting it right. Also, why not measure your own bike as the ultimate reference? Bonus: you can make the model as simple or as detailed as you feel comfortable with.
Recommended course: "Build and Animate a Lowpoly Rocket" 👉 b3d.cgcookie.com/3ex1
🍳 Kitchen interior is the next thing to tackle as a Blender model All the cups and dishes add up to dozens of mini-exercises you will complete and come out with a great scene in the end. Bonus: this is a great opportunity for instancing; you can copy a lot of objects to make your scene nicely full.
Recommended course: "Mesh Modeling Bootcamp" 👉 b3d.cgcookie.com/3ex2
🏃Character model may seem intimidating if you're a beginner, but organic modeling is amazing to try even at a basic level. It's going to push your topology and edge flow, which will make you a better modeler (even if you're looking to become a hard surface modeler). Again, proportions are key: you can get a nice looking character even with simple forms. Plus, even an awkward result means you will have learned a lot.

This video and the advice is amazing. A few questions though, if the goal is animation then would make human be useful or inadvisable? Do you have a video about box modeling characters that is similar to this one? Do you have a video on rigging in this format?
I've managed to delete the default cube... So I guess I'm making some progress...
How you did it? XD

Top 3 things every beginner Blender artist should 3D model:
-Donut
-Mug
-Anvil
Anvils must be excellent practice :D All from modelling to texture/shading and lights, great tip!
Its a joke don't take it seriously
@@yassiraykhlf5981 Why not? They're very useful tutorials, the donut and mug are a nice introduction, and the anvil tutorial is a more complex one which will teach you how to make something more advanced.
Add Chair to the list too...

Great advice, I'll give them a try soon.
First, I need to sort out my bad habit of getting excited over new project ideas and leaving my models unfinished.

this one hit the nail 😅

How about 3 things every beginner in 3D sculpting should make
Good idea! Might tackle that next...
What's the difference between 3-D modeling and sculpting? Thought they were the same thing.
@@gopolarisstudiomodeling feels like connecting Steel bars together to make a bike frame. Sculpting feels like shaping clay with your bare hand and it's definitely not a good method to make a bike frame.
I love the cycles render transition!
As a Low-Poly 3D modeler of 3 years, I'd love to say that this video is a creative way to practice and help you achieve the step of your goal to get to be able to do more advanced work. 5-stars from me. :)
Kind of on target with your suggestion of modelling a kitchen, one of the first things I started modelling was a scale layout of my house. The kitchen I modeled was based on my actual kitchen, so I had references right there to work from. Same with the living room. And now if I see some new piece of furniture I think I might like, I can model it and place it into the room in Blender to see what it might look like or if it would even fit.
Every piece of furniture presents a different challenge and requires different techniques to do. A recliner is very different from a bookshelf, a computer desk, or a bed.
And once I had the basic parts together, I used some of the other layers to create a "what if" version of the house where I imagined knocking out interior walls and adding a second story. It's really rough and not really suitable for rendering, but kind of fun to play with.
The way he explains i love it. Looking forward to learn from you man.
Great video, and I love the render tiles transition!
This exercise was amazing and really helped me out
Was able to model one thing at a time and had no confidence for a big scene rendering like a kitchen
The Blender Render transition between videos was great i loved it😄
Brilliant....will be checking out previous challenge post 👏👏
Thanks for these tips! I'm about to start interior design to refresh my 3d modeling knowledge... hihi
Thank you CG!
Once again another inspiring and encouraging video for us beginners! Thank you so much for this.
So glad you found it helpful!
Thank you for sharing ur knowledge with us... Love you bro!
i started making 3d models 13 years ago, and this stuff never made me bored, and is funny how you can find everything on the internet these days, i spent a ton of cash in pretty lame books and i had a printed copy of the 3dmax documentation, yeah people, a printed copy of the software help menu. Love watching your channel, keep figting the good fight.
Every modeler needs to model *the DONUT*
Also THE ANVIL.
Also a dick.
I've been looking for something like this forever, thank you!
Thank you for great advices!
Like your Render transitions!
Awesome vid! Very helpful. Thank bud.
Thanks for the upload!
thank you for this video!
I struggled with modeling a slice of toast today (I’m embarrassed to say). Starting this video excited and then seeing A BIKE I almost threw up. Then A KITCHEN?!? OMFG... MY ANXIETY! I got a LONG way to go when it comes to modeling and learning Blender. Definitely thinking about trying some of the courses on your CG Cookie’s website. I am DETERMINED TO LEARN!!!
did u learn?
Thank yo kindly for this video. It's very insightful and helpful, especially for a beginner like myself.
Omg, please do more videos like this!!!!

LOVE YOUR VIDEO! LOVE YOUR ADVICE! You don't have annoying music playing in this video. YOU seem to really care about the info you're sharing - and not just making the video because you love hearing your own voice or any quips only you think are funny ;) Keep up the great work!! :) And thank YOU!!!
Thanks so much S, I'm glad that shows!
I Really do appreciate that final statement about getting on the long road from the beginning. But the point on where you catched my attention was your invitation to turn knobs and try to discover a personal way to do things... Even without your tutorials!!!
A brave thing from the PR guy of a tuition community!!!
I'm now follwing and I'll check your other videos. Obviously I'll go to your site to give it a try too.

Thanks mate! Obviously we think tutorials are a great way to learn, but we'd like to work ourselves out of a job so that you don't have to need them so often :) Good luck!
Hi there! While doing my graduation project I find your channel very helpful. Thanks for all the content. I would like to request you to please make a rain scence focusing on creating ripple effect and mud material on evee using version 2.80.
Great 80/20 advice!
Since it's the summer for me, I want to get good at modeling and maybe animation before grade 8. Since I really like drawing and and watching animations, I want to make something that I like as well. This was really helpful, I think I might start with a character first, since I found a very helpful Tutorial that fits my needs, and then do a kitchen, and after put some time into a bike :) thanks for this video, it's very helpful/ informative :))
Awesome man, good luck
Great video. Also that rendering transition
Thank you brother you really helpt🙏
Before character i would suggest to model a car.
Cars are combination of hard surface and organic shapes, and due to shiny surface topology do matter.
Also modeling car learns that modeling workflow differs from straight forward logic eg. You have to model whole car shape first and not part by part (doors, hood) and so one.
Well said. Modelling a car is without a doubt one of the most important tasks. I get a lot of questions about how to make curved shapes and the answer is model a car from a blueprint and you'll learn how it works lol
Very true. Especially the part about modeling the entire car first, and then basically breaking it down with another copy of the car. That was something I began understanding the concept about while doing Chris Plush's Corvette detailing series (I still haven't finished the car yet, just the body, wheels, and windows are done.), so there's more than one way to do it, it's all about how to do it correctly in a way that is possible for one to understand (or grasp the concept on).
are you the youtuber or CG Cookie?
I would actually tend to disagree. A car is a very large project to start with and despite the fact that it includes everything you would want you have to consider that it is very easy to get frustrated and bored if you can't get something right a as a beginner and then stop altogether. I would know because I started with a car and ended up with a really high poly mess and decided I never wanted to model anything ever again 😂
I did the cyber truck yesterday
Great advice
Very good advices...
I love watching blender tutorials while using Maya
Good advice!
Modeling characters with basic shapes is a great idea that I hadn't even thought of. I see these beautiful characters from talented artists loke Andrew Higginbotham and think yeah, I can do fhat....then fail on every single aspect. Starting with basic shapes and going from there might be a good way for me to start. Thanks
Wonderful video.
I just modelled a kitchen a few days ago for a game I was working on, I was abseloutley dreading it but it was actually quite simple.
Yay! Glad you tackled it anyway 😊
@@jonlampel thanks 😊
This video is the perfect analogy to “The art of fighting without fighting”, it’s “the art of tutorial without tutorialing”
I love the "rendering" video transition effect... Makes me question wether you are AI because your advice is top notch and spot on ... Kiddin aside great video... 😊👌
Not just for beginners. I use blender for about 3 years and I'd say I'm pretty good. But eg never modeled a bike, so it's also good for rather advanced people that went in only one direction, envrioment and dsture in my case
Great video. Add some backlight to deferentiat you from the background, and again, great video.
His first advice : Bike
Me : did the freaking donut
thank you:) appreciated:)
I like makeing Random things near my workspace, I'm a beginner and I already did some good looking furniture and props. Also , materials are easier to get right this way
Thanks dawg
These are some great Projects and tips!
Question. I have this problem of looking at exercises like this, and every time I feel that spending time on this would take away from a project with an actual practical purpose. How does one get enough hours in a day to do both, or rather how should one prioritize?
I love Blender!!!
Thanks ❤❤❤
0:32 haha I love that render cut effect
Might try to make Pichu. The head is literally an oval and nothing's super detailed on him. It will be a change from brass instruments, but I gotta expand! (Thanks for the tips!)
thx a lot!
I practiced modelling a bicycle wheel and the output was amazing..:)
Which tutorial you follow?
@@rc20gamer25 I actually follow various tutorials and channels for modelling. Modelling of a bicycle I did on my own based on what I learnt from all the tutorials combined. I have put a post on my youtube channel, thanking the channels that helped me in my blender journey.

Blender is addictive, i ve done almost all of those, the nodes are bit confusing though

Fantastic advice though
hey Jonathan, thank you so much for the amazing tips. When you started by that example of animators doing the bouncing ball exercise, I realized that this video is really helpful. I am starting to learn 3D animation, as a passion, and I wanted to learn 3D modeling to work as a freelancer as a job. I don't want to work as a freelance animator because I am still at the beginning and I want to learn animation as a passion not as a tool for the money, at least for now. So what I am asking is if there are more simple exercises I can do to improve my 3D modeling skills. I feel that the bicycle exercise is a bit complex for me. My goal is to model characters, not necessarily high-quality feature characters, I am okay with creating low poly game characters at the beginning. So I hope you can give me some simple exercises that can help me with that approach. I am really sorry for that long talk, but you are almost the only one who can understand what I am trying to explain. Thank you very much, bro and happy new year :)
Hey Ahmed, happy new year! I'd still recommend modeling a bike in your case because it doesn't have to be complex! Make the wheels from a torus, and the frames from a bunch of cylinders. Once you have the shape roughed out you can try to connect the pieces or add more details like spokes. You can model a lot more than you think you can. Give it a shot!
@@cg_cookie
Okay, Johnathan, I'll try that out .. and I will let you know once I finish it :)
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my question :)
I'm looking to Blender 2.8 tutorials exclusively, anything for previous versions of Blender I'm ignoring because everything for doing the things for modelling are different and not in the same places as 2.8 is, and much too confusing trying to figure out where those particular settings seen in 2.7x versions in version 2.8.
Hello 2019, thanks for this video. I love these ideas! Quick question, you mentioned working on a bouncing ball as a good exercise for animators. What else would you say is good animation technique in 3D?
Also... what would you recommend as great learning exercises for mograph animators? I don't really see myself heading into character animation for 3D. I respect a good walk cycle but Ive done a hundreds of them and I.m more into text animations and snazzy camera moves.
Great exercises, brought to you by James McAvoy XD
Beginner projects.. bicycle, kitchen, character... yeah. Makes me think if this is considered Beginner how would you call my level in modelling :D
My starting projects were the exterior of my house and everything I had on my desk
@@littlesnowflakepunk855 is it all in 1 scene would be sweet to do that then make it useable for a vr headset heh
@@bluethumbbuttoneek9465 Nah, two scenes. I did do some of the modeling in Blender XR though
@Solid Snake Truth is I don't consider modeling as a real job for me as I'm a game programmer. I need some basic low-poly skills for my "programmer art" :)
Is there a version of this video but for beginners who need help with joining, separating, making curves, etc?
yeah 3:57. I've been stuck so many times, taken a toilet break and realized the exact best solution mid-piss xD

Can anyone recommend me an addon for precision measurements. I've noticed blender measures from center to corner/s and I don't like that...
Oh and the knife tool for creating faces! I tried making a bracket with five faces, real time measurements messed me around, kept making new centres after a new face has been made!
Is that Cinema 4D you're using?
Funnily enough I'm learning blender by modelling a bicycle right now, since before I knew about this video
Great advice but I think the title should probably be "Top 3 things every 3D artist should model." This applies to way more than Blender.
That's 100% true!
That must be the most expressive set of eyebrows I've seen. Great video.

The right spot to place your foot on bike pedals is on the base of your toes; with many real bikes if you step with your heels on the pedals the tip of your feet will hit the front wheel when you pedal while turning.
>sees thumbnail; 'oohhh this is going to be that art class life drawing equivalent-boring'

Bro I'm 14 and I've made space shuttles on blender it's awesome
at 4.5 min you duplicated the mug and it changed its color. how to do that? i am pretty new to blender. sorry if the question is too obvious or silly.
making bicycle I probably just use orthographic reference and trace it, and do modification depending what the purpose it, and scale it to with human model and test it done.
How do you give each object a different colour in the kitchen ?
Blender 2.8 has a "Random" color setting under the matcap options
Train the specific to get better at the general
What's that multi-colour shading view at 4:30? Looks automatic and not like you've assigned colours separately?
The viewport colors are set to random. In 2.8 it's in the upper right corner of the viewport. Just press the dropdown menu and you'll find it.

how can i use this cool colors you use while modeling?
