“- Godowski, Bach-Busoni, Bach-Leonhardt. And now, Bach-Mearns, for no transcription of Bach deserves a hyphen more than the guitar transcription presented here."
- Mark Delpriora, Manhattan School of Music / Juilliard School
"…..a revelation, Mearns reveals himself a singular artist of extraordinary imagination…truly a next-generation phenomenon. "
- Stephen Aron, Oberlin Conservatory of Music
"If you think you’ve heard Bach on the guitar, think again!"
- Rene Izquierdo, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
"Mearns’ virtuosic recording is a thrilling adventure for the hands and ears…reminding us of how exciting the guitar can be as a solo instrument when it suggests something greater than itself."
- Jonathan Leathwood, University of Denver, Editor Soundboard Scholar
“Alan Mearns is undoubtedly a virtuoso guitarist, yet he is more than that. Alan is a creative soul with a vast imagination and refined musicianship. His transcriptions of Bach are a beautiful glimpse into his creative world.”
- Bill Piburn, editor Fingerstyle Guitar Journal
Absolutely beautiful arrangement and performance!
Thanks 🙏 Rick
Cheers
Exquisite Tone and a flawless performance.Father Bach was a master of composition. The 18 the century was the greatest musical age starting with Bach and Handel and ending with Mozart and Beethoven. Musicians were really musicians, not like today. We have lost something from our souls like faith, love, and hope. If music is love, then play on!
So beautiful. Makes me want to cry.
Thanks 🙏
I can't even play this on the piano and you're just strolling through it like it's nothing. I admire the talent, brother.
Thanks 🙏
A glimps of the infinite beauty of the ever moving life!!
❤️🙏
Alan, that was salve for the soul, thank you!
Thanks 🙏
This is my favorite Bach piece by you.
A bit of tranquility in an otherwise hectic day. THANKS

Thank you.

That tiny whirlpool of notes at :56 was so cool! Really love this piece, never heard it before, so thanks.
Thanks 🙏
Bach's music is so sublime. Great piece and great playing!

It sounds as if it was composed by Bach straigt for the guitar.... So inspiring and healing
Thanks 🙏
Magistrat interprétation many thanks. Marc ❤🙏
❤️🙏
Thank you, just thank you.
Cheers Dan 🙏
Masterful, elegant, beautiful. Bach would approve.
Wow, thank you!
After a god-awful day of being pecked to death by a thousand idiotic questions from donuts with attitude, I decided to pour myself a glass of something appropriate and defrag. Then this pops up on my feed. Bliss. Thank you.
Thanks 🙏 Mike
Just lovely. Can't get enough of those cross string ornamentations, so cleanly played.
Been in bed sick snoozing and just woke to see this, and that my copy of the book is on the way! Nice little pick-me-up.
Cheers Alan!
Yes indeed
Thanks 🙏
Lovely three and a half minutes of my life. Thank you.

Amazing and beautiful. Those trills and your use of harmonics in the melody....wow...
Thanks 🙏
Rockin the suburbs with some bach. Your talent is most excellent. Im certain God appreciates what you've done with it. Wenn du ihn rufst, wird er antworten.
Wow, thank you!
Such beauty❤
Thanks 🙏
GORgeous!
Thanks 🙏
Bravo. A long time favorite, and your transcription is divine - powerful, sensitive, and lovely. Thank you!
Thanks 🙏
What a beautiful piece.
It really is!
delightful
Thanks 🙏
Brilliant stuff!!
Thank you for your poetic courage to live the music with such heart and dedication. With and without the hat. Feels like I’ve been waiting for someone since Jeff Buckley to come along with that kind of timeless vision and hefty romanticism in them, and you’ve got it in spades. Grateful to Rick Beato for spreading the word, a sagacious DIY a&r man for a DIY music world. Your wee videos are more than a wee-bit mind-blowing.
Thanks 🙏
Beautiful Alan !!!
Thanks for listening
I must have been around 16 or so when I first saw Andrey Tarkovsky’s “Solaris”, with this piece being the central (if not the *only* thematic) part of the film score, and it struck me straight in my heart. It is weird to experience that same emotion now, by hearing this guitar version. Thank you, Alan. You actually make my life better. (It has been a while since I could have said this of any musician.)
Thanks 🙏 that’s where I first heard it. ❤️
Excellent work.
Thanks 🙏
Indeed.
Sublime, and such a joy to watch you play too, Alan. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
another exquisitely arranged bit of JSB, played to perfection. Alan, you are quite possibly the best thing to happen to the classical guitar since a long, long time
Too kind ❤️🙏
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Had your album playing in the background while doing a setup on one of my basses. And then of course had to practice some four fingerstyle
❤️🙏
I tried to have a go at this after hearing Rick Graham play Gérard Abiton's arrangement, it's much harder than it seems. Beautiful arrangement and playing!
Thanks 🙏
Just came from your video about Rick. Love your work!
Thanks 🙏 Steve
Beautiful playing. It's always fun and impressive when you can play a double-string trill while playing other voices at the same time. I wonder how the famous Adagio by Albinoni would sound in your hands. Thanks
So cleanly played aside from the singing from the strings that the only other audible sound was your jacket grazing against your side. Your touch is so precise and yet relaxed there was not even the slightest hint of string noise. I marvel at your musicianship.
Thanks for listening
This is quite beautiful
Thanks 🙏
Just brilliant!!!
Thanks 🙏
Probably my favourite Bach piece. Incredibly beautiful. Always loved Rick Grahams performance on guitar, but I think this is even better
Thanks 🙏
Beautiful 🙏👏. Have you thought of playing lute instead. Bach was friend of S.L.Weiss and loved his music. That would also open a door to the renaissance music which is fabulous. Gould himself liked the music if virginalists very much which you probably already know.
Some day.
I am the way , the truth and the life. -Jesus
In this day of never ending , increasing lies and deception in all forms in all varieties there is but one truth.
Sublime music beautifully played.
Thanks 🙏
wish your book had tabs brutha guess I gotta get better at reading. 😢
a lot of bach players are so technical, but you carry on the legacy of bream and gould, playing it with feeling.
Thanks 🙏
This is beautiful. Bach is pure joy for the ears, perfectly played 👌🏼💯
Thanks 🙏
Outstanding, Alan! Simply beautiful; so beautiful, and so simply sounding.
Can it be that J.S. Bach had the most rudimentary understanding of the music of the spheres?
Not that rudimentary Indeed 😂
Thanks 🙏 And yes, definitely music of the spheres ❤
Lovely

What a great day 😀your book and cd arrived and now this video which captures so well your timing and right hand skills- so inspiring 🎶
Thanks 🙏 so much
I’ll save all my Jesus jokes for later. That was just beautiful, and exactly what I needed on a Monday morning. Thank you, Alan!
Thanks 🙏
Simply beautiful!
Thanks 🙏 Donald
Beautiful work brother.I am transfixed by how effortlessly your fingers move over a piece of music.thats not just a gift thats graft!
Thanks for listening
Very enjoyable.
Thanks 🙏
A enjoyed that wee tune Alan. A don't know anything about classical so a wouldn't be able to comment on the nuances of this. Anyhow mate I could stand a lot more. 👍🥃Respect to you mate.
Glad you enjoyed it
Lindo
Thanks 🙏
Beautifully shaped and voiced, such a joy to listen to, thank you Alan 😊
Thank you 🙏
I confess that when I saw this post I had mixed feelings. I absolutely love this piece, particularly Willhelm Kempff's beautiful piano arrangement and performance (his approach to Bach reminds me of yours somewhat), but I didn't think that the guitar could really do it justice.
Of course I had underestimated your incredible musicality coupled with your effortless mastery. You have produced more guitar gold - it gives me deep joy to watch your ascent in recent weeks to your rightful position among fellow guitarists and music lovers. Bravo, Mr Mearns!
Thanks 🙏
Well done - that was lovely!
Thanks 🙏
Great job. I love hearing Bach on guitar. I too am a fan of Glen Gould. I have always listened to Parkening play Bach. You do a great job too. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks 🙏
Sad to say, but Artemiev, through whose score to "Solaris" I learned about this piece, has died few weeks ago. He left a lot of great music behind...
Sad ❤️
😊
I. absolutely love your arrangement and playing. thank you!
if I may ask: who is the Luthier of your guitar?
Sure. This guitar is an Enrico Bottelli
@@AlanMearns-YesTheRaven thank you. Beautiful guitar as well.
Magnificent! Did you play this from memory, or did you have the sheet music in front of you?
I play from memory

I'm not naturally drawn to his Cantatas (for whatever reason, having singers recite religious text, in German, in Recitatives makes me switch off. No really). However, the Cantatas are full of treasures. Beautiful Arias, Chorales, etc. I still remove all the Recitatives though.
True, there are some amazing ones though
Two obvious errors (the notes). Otherwise good.
