One of the best "coverage" of anyones' life that I've ever looked a . I spent a lot of time with Immo when she was working at a theatre on the Sussex coast and we stayed in contact because we both found that we could talk to each other honestly without any strings attatched. I had just (stupidly and sadly) left my partner because of their fame and she was trapped in a world with everyone wanting her to be the Imogen of the screen. One or two details missing but nothing that wasn't "as it was". A sad epitaph of someone who wanted to be loved and to give love but found it hard to do or to be anything that wasn't a performance. She was lovely, a very dear soul xxx

@@MarkMahoney Thankyou!! One little anecdote: we were invited to open the Storrington Carnival and the owner of the Helecopter company at Shoreham said;"I'll take you in one of my choppers" We went to Shoreham, climbed into the thing "Ensrom" I seem to remember and up we went and as it rolled and turned, with the glass (perspex) bobble that went down and out of sight between your legs, the short flight made me so sick I bowed out of the afternoon and hitch-hiked back to Worthing finally accepting a lift on a Mods' scooter (and me the owner of a big blue throbbing Harley!!!) what a come-down but Imogen loved it and all for the best perhaps, she enjoyed the pilots company. You know what they say? Two's company etc. but once again, not a good choice.

She was the granddaughter of artist John Hassall whose 1908 poster "The Jolly Fisherman" known as "Skegness Is So Bracing" because of its message, may be his best remembered work. Back in 1972, there was a documentary made about her- her aunt clearly disapproved of her lifestyle and we saw various aspects of her life, and her being body-painted. Sadly, show business has a big downside to it and many people- a list too long to mention felt that their worth was not being shown courtesy of their screen persona. The press, in fact referred to Imogen as the "Countess of Cleavage" which she must have felt was very derogatory but this short film shows why this title was coined for her. Perhaps, that is the downside to be very beautiful in a business that may be glitzy on the surface but underneath is less than wholesome in many of its aspects. A very sad life story in so many ways.

    • @derekparker2534

It's far more dangerous to censor what the press can say.. The countess of cleavage is an endearing term of phrase.. There are much worse phrases to call someone.. And fabulous Imogen did not kill herself because of that... She suffered from depression... Remember her with happiness and love.. Each must remember in their own way... Others must not be Fascist in how the dead are remembered.. Imogen believed in free speech 💗🌻👍.. And kindness.... Please do not reply to me in an angry or dismissive way.... Live and let live

A Beautiful Tribute of the Life & Work of Imogen Hassall, and another great and tragic loss to the Industry, So many big Film stars and well known TV names, battle with depression, in private, and often tend to sadly die way to early, one of the most important skills as an Actor is to "Feel" emotions with a deep, passionate, intensity, which will lead to magnificent Performances on Screen & Stage. But that skill can lead unwittingly to extremely low times at sad moments in real life, and dugs and drinking makes it worse, My fellow Actor & Friend Richard Burton, being one example who struggled with Alcohol, at low times and sadly died aged 58 as a result, and Caroline Flack aged 40 more recently, two amazing, wonderful, extremely talented, and so very kind, Professionals, it was a joy to work with, and know, and who I will forever miss, I loved this tribute to Imogen, sadly I never got to work with her, but have watched a lot of her work, and enjoyed her performances, and a sad end for such a good and so Beautiful Actress.

I have a unique Imogen story..in 1976 I was a fit young man working back stage at a large theatre on the south coast UK...Imogen was appearing in a play at the theatre for a weeks run....she became very friendly towards me, towards the end of the weeks show she commented that I was tall and muscular and could I go with her as her minder to an agent who owed her money ! I didn't think my then girlfriend would approve so I said I couldn't help her ! Back then without the Internet I never really knew who she was, just thought she was a traveling actress, she was very beautiful ! Was very saddened to hear she died...such a troubled soul.

Hi Mark, I lived & worked in London in the early 70's, I lived up in Cleveland Square just off Bayswater road. I was an artist/ illustrator as a consequence I always had to have other work to bring in some regular income, I worked part time in Ken High Street Market. In the West End back then there was a real mix of creatives, including actors, actresses, musicians & writers. There was a great buzz about the place back then. Probably sounds a bit mad but I used to love the walk across the Park, ( Hyde of course), looking down from the rise at the top of the park, you could feel that electric energy emitting from below & beyond, fabulous. I was quite a sociable creature so I met loads of people, some more interesting than others. I was never phased by individuals who were in the public eye so when I did meet it used to be natural as it should be. I met Tony Curtis & Janet Leigh, he was an ebullient character, they had separated by that time but still seemed very close I met Al Green, didn't know he was such a well known guy, he was very sweet & incredibly modest as well. We had Hurricane Higgins down at the pub, the Greyhound in Young street,(if remember correctly), also Rod Stewart, the late Marty Feldman played at the Wine Bar just up the road. Loads more. And some dodgy characters as well . Big John Bindon, met him in a bar in Chelsea. Long gone now. Thinking back I did meet a lot of "interesting" folks. And oddly enough I might have ended up playing professional football down in London Town, in 1968/69 I was playing football for a small club in Scotland, scouts from both The Woolwich Arsenal & Millwall had approached the club asking if they could have me for trials but the provincial club wouldn't entertain it. I was a pretty handy Goal Keeper.
Great times back then, some of us survived & thrived & some didn't make it through. Life is a bit of a War, you have to be resilient. It's worth it, I continue to have a bit of a fascinating Life.
It is a wonderful Life I always keep that in mind & how precious it is. Gets you through the bigger challenges.
      Cheers Mark

Imogen Hassall was so so beautiful looking back at this. Gorgeous. So tragic and what a loss she was. Even if I am 37, I never forget people like this and like to always look back and remember them for their wonderful qualities and happiness and enjoyment they gave us being able to watch them, but more importantly how tragic their own lives were away from their work and that they weren't able to find happiness because of personal struggles in life. It's lovely to remember Imogen for how beautiful she was here. Her death at 38 was the tragedy of a kind loving human being who in real life was lost and broken inside and that what you see on film isn't truly how someone feels. I personally want to remember Imogen particularly who is no longer with us but others also that are no longer here from these eras years ago and although it's the past, they're always in our thoughts and with us. We'll meet them again.

Hassall was married to actor Kenneth Ives, and before they were married, they had a daughter called Melanie Ives Hassall, who died four days after being born in 1972. With her second husband she lost a second child by miscarriage

What a beautiful sexy woman and what a tragic ending. She reminds me of Sally Geeson from Bless this house.

An all too common story, fame doesn't always mean happiness. Her presence on film made a scene glow, unfortunately the entertainment industry has a habit of putting out the lights with devastating effect.

I only ever knew her from Carry on Loving. Such a sad ending. The 1970’s was a bad time for women in movies imo . They were always portrayed especially in British comedies of the time as sex objects for the male lead. If she have had proper support she could of gone on to have a decent career. RIP

And they fought ferociously and stood on each others heads to be portrayed as those sex objects

Yes, so very true. There were and still are advantages to be seen as a sex object - particularly for women, of course.
