I was student working at the Piccadilly Theatre in London's West End in 1984 when Gary was appearing in Pump Boys and Dinettes with Lyndsey de Paul and Paul Rogers. He was the only cast member who was in touch with reality. He had time for the sparkies, front of house, cleaners - no ego, no 'look at me'. He invited a few of us to a party in the basement of a restaurant in Maida Vale after a show - just a really open, honest and decent human being who I was lucky to have shared some time with. You can live for 90 years and not really touch another life in any meaningful way. He had his battles with drink and drugs and died far too soon - but he left a mark on many who met him and is remembered with warmth and respect here at least. As Bill Hicks says....it's only a ride, and Gary had a short and beautiful one.
Beautiful words Simon. I had a friend who used to see Gary in local pubs in and around maida vale back in the 80s. Everyone who met him said he was such a lovely bloke, so down to earth and decent. I wish I'd met him but I always felt I did. He's the only celebrity death who's loss I mourned so much.
so you also know he didnt have any talent. what you saw on the stage or screen was just him exactly like he was every minute of the day. ordinary geezer..

no he didnt have a single bit of talent in his whole body.. could not sing at all....... he got breaks due to the parts needing a slimey little cockney character, exactly what he was. shame he ever got a break because a tiny biit of fame went to his head and the drugs started to flow. what he didnt realise was most other fellas bragging about how much coke and herion they were doing was actually fiction... he did go clean for a little while then got fame in auf and boom came the dope again and it killed him.... it was clever for the film makers putting him into certain parts that needed someone exactly like him.. he didnt act at all . thats exactly what he was realy like in real life, little cockney geezer.. .... there was another absolutely useless actor who got fantastic accolades even a osca, but could not realy act and was exactly the same in every role he played and off screen the same too....... he got praise for a film his old lady was also cast in, it was the best fuck up of his career when they cast him as marc anthony in anthony and cleopatra.. to me i cannot see how you can possibly have marc anthony (supposed t obe a roman solder ) with a strong welsh accent !!!! yes richard burton..... every single part he ever played his voice dont change a single bit............broad sword to danny boy ... see you dont have to have talent to get on in the film game.. ive come across plenty who cant act to save their life yet got extrememly famous....

Such a charismatic man. Loved AWP and he was fantastic in it. Got the boxed set and while watching them again is packed with nostalgia and sentiment the all round quality, the patient pacing and superbly written and acted characters just doesn't get old. Can't think of much since that gets close. Gary was a big part of that quality and great to get such an insight into his life. Thank you.
Thank you for putting this up. So much here I didn't know. He saw a band I was in play the Clarendon in Hammersmith, in the early/mid '80s. It was around the time of Auf Wiedersehen, and he came and chatted backstage. I was a bit starstruck, but he was really supportive. Years later I met people who had been told by Gary that they should check my band out. A truly terrible waste.
It's mad thinking back, i was only 9 years old when Gary died and i loved Auf Pet my dad used to let me stay up and watch it, granted a lot of stuff used to go over my head but i loved the characters especially Wayne and Oz. I remember so clearly that last episode at the beginning when Tim Healy dedicates it to Gary ,i genuinely felt sadness and it was probably my first dealings with the whole life and death thing. Met Gary in Nottingham going to IL nidos restaurant he was with a very pretty lady and asked me for directions , he was so polite and he said he was working part time in a local pub for charity , he said come and join me for a pint on Sunday , sadly I never went but he did seem a really nice guy and I wish I had gone . Gary was the lad most lads wanted to be and girls wanted to be with him what a talented young man . See you later for that pint .
Such a shame you missed out on going for a "pint" with Gary". He always seemed a down to earth type of guy, who was friendly and approachable. So talented too. He missed out on some great opportunities. If he hadn't of died so young, I believe he would have ended up as a world renowned artist, in the Gary Oldman/ Tim Roth, type of mould ?? Tragic.
@@michelemartin3642 yes I could not believe he had all the quality's and talent that would outclass many of today's celebrities , but not being boastful I think he was just happy to be with down to earth people and appreciated their company , never one of the Luvie set but oh what a talent. @@philldownes8685 Druggies are cool , Slash , Ozzy , Lemmy , Jimmy Page even Eric Clapton was on Heroin at one point , the drugs expand your mind and make you a better musician , where would Jimi Hendrix have been without LSD ?
Lovely photos as an innocent child with his dad ,then life gets a hold on us ,and living life on life's terms is very very hard for alot of us,and we self destruct, most times not realising what we are doing to ourselves and our families ,we can't cope with lives pressures and what's going on in our heads
He was a big loss in AWP, and was definitely one of the best characters in the show, 1st and 2nd series always the best. Never be another AWP😔
Thankyou for the memories.
That was really interesting Mark. You see people on TV and just do not realise what they have gone through/going through.
Auf Weidersehen Pet inspired me to travel the world. I ended up working in Germany for 8 years & other places too. Thanks Gary, may you rest in peace, brother! 💕
👋🙏
Thanks for the post he was a great talent and such a likable lad forever young in our hearts and minds R.i.p Gary
Shoulda steamed in there, son.
I do believe he could have gone on to bigger things but his demons got in the way , even upon my brief meeting with Gary I felt like I had met a long lost friend he had that way about him , a true star ⭐ that so many miss god bless him.
More often than not you come out with a true blinder Mark. This is one of those true blinders.
Terrible shame, his articulate manner in auf was a testimony to his intelligence.. RIP
Great piece , very sad. Always watch the repeats. Was unaware of a few chances in life, he should have took . RIP sir .
A very talented young man, taken far too soon. Don`t ever judge people for their short comings or vices, it can happen to the best of us all to easy. All it takes, is for the conditions to be right.
Very true, everyone has a story, just because you see someone down and out remember, they haven’t always been, and you may be astonished to find out what they have done in their lives, never judge a book ……..

Well done. A great tribute and cheers.
Very interesting yet very sad. Wow so close to joining AC/DC. He was brilliant as Wayne 👍
