- Please join me in this video, Peter Butterworth and his wife Janet Brown (the perfect impersonator).
I visit the graves of Peter Butterworth of Carry On Films fame and his wife Janet Brown - the perfect impersonator! We'll also take flowers to their daughter Emma Butterworth.
Peter Butterworth was in 16 of the Carry On films - including Carry On Cowboy, Carry On Abroad, and Carry on Camping - Peter's own personal favourite was Carry On Up the Khyber!
Janet Brown was famous for her impression of Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who told her "Your achievements and popularity reflect two very important British characteristics - a sense of humour and the freedom in which to enjoy it"
Sadly, Janet Brown lost her husband and daughter before passing away in 2011.

His portrayal of Mr Fiddler was exceptional. I'm very impressed with how respectfully you put this together, quite moving and I'm sure surviving family would approve.
Thank you so much! And thank you for watching! I agree Mr Fiddler was exceptional to the point of even typing it makes me giggle still!
I've got the Fiddler t-shirt. "All p......asses must be shown". Available on eBay!
Ah, Mr Fiddler! 😁😁 "A pound"...
On the evening before my flight home to Australia in 2003, I met Janet Brown (whom I'd never heard of) in the lounge of a small hotel in London. Over supper, she told me what she did, and I dared to ask her to slip into character for me. I was bowled over at the depth of her impersonation, though I knew Margaret Thatcher only from TV. The voice, the demeanour were spot on, for an audience of one. A memorable encounter.
Oh my goodness!!! Thank you so much for sharing this memory - how lovely! I always adored watching Janet! She seemed as if she would be a nice person to know! ❤️ Thank you for watching the video 🌹
Absolutely loved them both!! They had talent in absolute abundance!! I didn't know until now that they were together!! May they rest in eternal peace and also their beloved daughter xx
Weren’t they fabulous! I agree an abundance of talent! They were both very gifted! ❤️
Peter Butterworth, he's one of my favourites,I loved him as Mr Fiddler...R.I.P
❤️❤️❤️
Peter never played the lead in any of the Carry Ons, but he always stole the show. He certainly had some of the best lines in Up The Khyber.
Your right! And he certainly did have some of the best lines I agree! ❤️
Of course, Janet’s Maggie was superb. Incisive, but never nasty, and learning here that she was married to Peter makes sense because he was obviously an English gentleman, marvellously understated in his demeanour, and I imagine they complimented each other very well. So sad to hear their daughter died so young.
You are so right! I loved Janet’s impersonations and Maggie T was a faultless one! They seemed a very lovely couple from what I’ve read by people that knew them both x
Her Maggie was so good she got to play her in James Bond.
On my mum's side, my nans sister was married to Peter butterworths cousins.
So I'm very proud to be very distantly related to Peter Butterworth and his wife Janet Brown.
@@MavAuto-Pete wonderful. You really should be proud 👏
Love them both, they were part of my youth. RIP.
Mine too! They were just brilliant - brings back a lot of happy memories x
I’m always impressed by people who could have had two successful careers, Peter as a Royal Navy pilot and of course, the one we all remember, his acting career. As already said, he was very much part of my formative years, happy memories.
@@stephenloquens7964 I’m the same! Also - for me I’m impressed when people know exactly what they want to do from childhood and then go ahead and do it!!! I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up 🤣🤭
Peter was an hilarious comedy actor, I loved him in the Carry On films and I am sure he was also a lovely man in real life as well. He was a true hero for our country in World War 2. I actually had the pleasure of seeing him once in the early 1960’s. I was walking home from school and he was cycling up the Otley Road at West Park in Leeds, so I assume he was working in the Grand Theatre there? I waved to him and he waved back and said hello ! Another excellent story and video, thank you👍. His best ever line……” you expect me to lend myself to this sort of thing? I am here to save fallen women……so save me the one on the right….” 🤣🤣 ( Brother Belcher - Carry on up the Kyber )
He was a true hero definitely! That’s so lovely that you got to see him like that! What a memory to treasure! He was so funny and that line was brilliant 🤭
Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment! It’s extremely appreciated! ❤️
@@bolshevikproductions if I understood your question I’d try and answer it 🤔
They were bored over night and obviously couldn’t sleep…. 🤭

Peter Butterworth was probably my favourite carry on actor..brilliantly funny and perfect timing..god bless him.
He was brilliant! I completely agree! ❤️
Bless your heart for laying flowers on behalf of your devoted viewers. You have brought tears to my eyes ❤
It’s alway a pleasure! It makes me very happy to do it and I thank you so much for your kind words and appreciation! ❤️
This is such a lovely gentle tribute to wonderful English gentleman and a bonnie Scottish lady, both were immense talents in the British entertainment industry, they brought joy to those lucky enough to see them, bless you for reminding us of their happy joyful presence in our lives and that laughter truly is the best medicine, thank you 😊 💖.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the video! It's very appreciated!
They were both brilliant I was a young man in the 70s probably never see their like again thankyou peter and janet for the wonderful memories even today in 2022 we need more laughter now than ever before and your films and shows do exactly that job accomplished RIP
They were! And so very true - they brought so much laughter and happiness and we certainly need that now!
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful stream!! I remember these two only to well back in the day when comedy was comedy!!🤣Not like now where being funny is just acting daft, example's Keith lemon, Ant and Dec, Michael mackintrye, To name a few, Anyway RIP to a not forgotten talented couple and there daughter!!👍🇬🇧😢
Thank you! They were so brilliant weren’t they! I totally know what you mean too - for me vintage comedy was the best! ❤️❤️❤️
‘I thought I was going to break wind. And I was wrong’
I very much know that feeling. 🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣 so brilliant! And the lines delivered to perfection!
Peter Butterworth was an absolute comedy legend, one of the greatest RIP Peter.
He was ❤️🌹
I have never been a fan of the Carry On films - but am a fan of Peter Butterworth's role as the Meddling Monk in Doctor Who's The Time Meddler (1965). Peter Played a member of the Doctor's own people - long before the concept of the Time Lords was introduced into Doctor Who. I have always hoped that new era Doctor Who would bring back the Meddling Monk. It was a great character played excelently by Butterworth.
I grew up watching it - was petrified of the Daleks! I don’t recall the meddling Monk - I need to re watch the old episodes!
Yep I know him as The Meddling Monk as well. I’ve always wanted them to bring the character back. They have in the Big Finish audios.
Same here. I thought Peter played the Monk perfectly. A naughty (slightly sinister) middle-aged schoolboy ever getting up to mischief just for his own pleasure. Pity he never reprised his role with Troughton or Pertwee (an occasional Carry On cameo player himself). As far as I know he was the only regular "Carry On" team member to appear in 60's Who apart from Bernard Bresslaw. I know Joan Sims appeared with Colin Baker a couple of dacades later.
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre I recently watched all of the classic era Doctor Who that is available (loads have been lost as the BBC had a purge of their back catalogue) on Britbox. Was well worth the couple of months subscription I paid.
@@emersonschosenfew I really liked the character - and, in some ways, his meddling appeared to be well intended to give the English/Anglo Saxons a bit of heads up about the 1066 invasion and perhaps have them stave off the invasion.
As with the Carry On movies - William Hartnell appeared in the very first Carry On film - Carry on Sergent. As with his career prior to Doctor Who, he played a military man (the Sergent in the title). One thing he liked about being the Doctor was it broke his type case image.
You make me cry every time you lay flowers on the graves. ❤❤❤❤❤
Awww - I’m just so pleased that I’m able to do it and say ‘thank you’ ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for this video.
These biographies are filled with otherwise unknown nuggets. Their lives were so filled with the ups and downs we all go through. Yet again, your excellent commentary serves to illuminate these wonderful people with clear, respectful and pleasant script.
Cheers. Xx
My pleasure!!!! I enjoy making the videos - I’m so interested in all the people I feature - it makes it great fun and it’s the icing on the cake that you enjoy them too! Thank you x
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre when I was growing up in the 60s, and even at a very young age, I wondered what those folk were really like. When people ask about my humour, I respond that as a child of that era, I get the postcard humour and happen to be Sid James's love child!
To my kids, it's unacceptable for that kind of movie comedy to even exist but we know better.
Regards and carry on!
Oh!!! That literally made me laugh out loud! I adored Sid James - still do - and you’re right - it’s often not seen as acceptable now and the Carry Ons are frowned on by some - but I love them and I don’t care! 🤣
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Oh yes ! I still love the Carry Ons and I don't care either, haha. (the world's gone mad and stupid in the last couple of decades) . And I love Jeff's comments too😄
Peter was a superb villain called "The Monk" in the first Doctor Who .
He was great - I’ve not seen that Dr Who episode - having said that… I did watch everyone as a kid so I might have but it didn’t register it was Peter!
@@halcyon289 Pity the Daleks masterplan was affected with missing episodes. - Also has Nicholas Courtney in his first Dr Who appearance who later went on to play Brig Lethbridge Stewart.
Brilliant , loved Peter Butterworth so much , Mr Fiddler was hilarious and Janet Brown was very talented so sad about their daughter so young , God love them all . Beautiful and touching Thank You so much
Thank you! I so enjoyed visiting their final resting place and saying thank you for all the fun and entertainment they brought over the years! They were wonderful! Xxx.
His mannerisms, his bumbling fumbling self effacing characters, were a hoot.
A classic character actor.
Stole the scenes on everyone of his appearances.
A mild an charming man off stage...
Never knew he was married to Janet B.
She was an amazing talent for mannerisms, voices an personalities of famous people.
Hi Shar.
Firstly thank you for a really well presented and light overview of Peter & Janet’s life& career.
I met them in the Autumn of 78 in a bistro in Brighton. I politely introduced myself and said how much I enjoyed their respective work, they both responded so positively, engaging in a five minute chat and Peter saying he had just completed filming on Carry On Emmanuel, and remember him distinctly saying ‘ It’s probably the last Carry On’ I left that conversation thinking what a lovely and charming couple and was saddened to hear of his passing only a few months later.
Brighton is just one of those places where one at least used to see Brit entertainers all the time.
In the 70s met Diana Dors in The Lanes, great charisma and very engaging.
Patsy Rowlands (ex Carry On) lived in Hove and often had a chat at our seafront cafe in the early 90s with engaging stories of the actors in Carry On. Syd James ‘ quite reserved’ Kenneth Williams ‘Intense’ but all a joy to work with.A lovely woman herself who said very much the whole cast didn’t do financially well of out Carry On at all, which considering what an iconic brand they collectively created is quite sad.
Anyway thanks again😎👌
That’s so lovely!!!! Thank you so much for sharing these memories - I think all of the old Carry On team were not impressed with Carry On Emmanuel - I believe Kenneth Williams positively hated it! I’m massively interested in your memory of seeing Diana Dors! She was a regular visitor to Brighton - she stayed in what is now The Holiday in - I think years ago it was The Bedford Hotel - she was a frequent visitor - to Worthing too - even though the council refused to pay the fee she wanted to open the swimming pool at the Worthing Lido in 1957 lol
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre hi Shar.
Well it was 1972 ( I was 19 at the time) and I was down visiting family and took myself off for a mooch around The Lanes.
Literally bumped into DD as she was coming out of a jewellers. She was with a friend and I’m never backward coming forward and asked her about her thoughts on current TV and the world of cinema
and how much I had enjoyed Queenie’s Castle a recent comedy that she had starrred in for the last few years. DD was so engaging, very charismatic had a sort of glow about her, she would have been early 40s.
at the time. Much smaller than I imagined with perfect skin and yes sexy but really it was her laughter and her engaging manner that I remember best. I do recall her saying that cinema and TV sometime in the future would become one and the same (predicting streaming without realising it I guess you could say) said that TV was bloody hard work and film was more preferable but one had to take what was going and ‘Better to be looked over that overlooked darling’ with a wink and laugh. I really liked her, a real one off and appeared very grounded and where she stood in the scheme of things. One last thing she rated Cary Grant as the quintessential Star who retired at the very top the very best and got it so right.
Hope that helps you😎👌
SteovO this is PURE GOLD! Thank you so much! I’ve studied Dors for years and I can completely imagine her voice talking to you! Fabulous - I know the 70s were a difficult decade for her - and with the beginning of the 80s it looked like things were getting better but sadly as we now know that turned out not to be the case x
Heartbreaking that Janet lived to see the death of her daughter, Emma.
My thoughts exactly! Absolutely tragic that she and her son had to go through experience of not only losing Peter but losing Emma at such a young age x
Indeed. No parent should have to bury their children 😢.
First, great narration, well done. Great story. I never knew Peter and Janet were married to each other. Peter just had that funny look about him, he could just pull those faces that made you laugh and I remember Janet was very funny, especially her Maggie Thatcher impressions. I really enjoyed this, good work.
Thank you so very much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I agree with you about Peter’s face 🤭 and Janet was a superb Maggie! X
That was wonderful brought tears to my eyes.
Thank you so much for watching ❤️❤️❤️
I have a special place in my heart for the carry on films because I remember fondly watching them with my grandad ...
I totally understand that - in many ways this is why I started this channel - my grandad’s family were very theatrical - one of his brothers acted on stage (not well known sadly but he did know Diana Dors!) and the other was a radio presenter - again not terribly well known but they loved entertaining! As a little girl I grew up watching old films with my grandad on the old black and white telly - and I just fell in love with it all!!! ❤️❤️🌹
Thanks for visiting them for us, looks like a lovely place to rest.
My pleasure! It's truly a beautiful village - and such a lovely peaceful cemetery ♥ Thank you so much for your comment! xxxx
I remember Peter, from a lot of his work. I also remember him in Doctor Who.
He played the Meddling Monk, another time traveller, who had a working Tardis, in that the camouflage circuit worked.
This Monk was engaged in trying to stop the 1066 invasion, by using modern weapons.
The Doctor sabotaged his time machine, so that he could never get back into it.
Thank you for reminding us of Peter Butterworth.
My pleasure! He was a brilliant actor and comedian ❤️
Peter was always a delight whenever he made an appearance. He was a natural entertainer. Like many British Character Actors, he had a face that could make one smile immediately. Delightful. Janet Brown was not one of my favourites though. I know she was adored by fans, but I never found her funny. Thank you for this wonderful, respectful retrospective.
He was wonderful and so talented I totally agree - when I think of Janet it’s always as Margaret Thatcher 🤭 first thing that comes to mind!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching! It’s most appreciated xx
Wonderful man, part of our history ⚘🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Thank you, so interesting, what a story. This generation routinely suffered the kind of hardships that would defeat most of us.
Thank you! You’re totally right - life was so different for them - we have so much going for us these days and don’t always realise it!

Difficult to choose a favourite Peter Butterworth scene, the great man was SO funny and continues to be so every time I watch one of his DVDs. But if I had to pick one, it would be the last Carry On Abroad "Mr. Farkeehaas" scene shown here, in your excellent video.
Lovely video that highlights a great husband and wife team. Very informative and will always remember Peter in the Carry On films but was unaware of how he passed away. Janet Brown I remember but never realised she was Scottish until I watched this video. Thank you once again for enlightening me, to people from all our childhoods in such a loving way.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment - it has made my day! Thank you for watching xx
Full marks to you for remembering their daughter as well.

Nice one Shar. Thank you. I remember Peter in an episode of Nearest and Dearest, with the fabulous Hylda Baker. He was the Mayor in it and very funny as always. You probably get hundreds of requests, but Hylda baker would be a good one! A comedy legend. However there's no grave as such, and she was cremated and scattered in Bolton. XX. RIP.
My pleasure! I'm really looking forward to doing Hylda Baker!!! I am going to do a section of favourite performers that are either buried abroad or have no grave and have been scattered - as there are so many that I love that can't be visited and I do want to remember their amazing work and lives! Peter was marvellous I absolutely loved him x Thank you so much for watching x
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre I knew you'd love Hylda too! It'll be great to see her covered and all the other greats that you'll include. XX
When I was a kid in the middle 50's bbc had a kids prog called "bits and pieces" which entailed him saying b and pieces get together, then with reverse camera reel photography the items would become whole.
He had a great face, also when he was in the carry on camping holiday film, still creases me up when I see it, and the carry on in Spain, what a great way to be remembered, his wife must have been heartbroken.
Thank you for sharing such delightful memories! Peter Butterworth's charm and talent truly left a lasting impression, from his entertaining work on "Bits and Pieces" to the classic Carry On films. It's heartening to hear how his performances continue to bring joy and laughter. Yes, his wife must have cherished the wonderful moments they shared. Their legacy lives on through the joy they brought to so many 🌟

I'd like to leave my greatest respects for these talented people. He has been dead for nearly as long as I have been alive, but such a cornerstone of a fantastic right of passage will never grow old. The innocence of the supposed vulgarity was the dawning of so many young boys' awakenings.. Much missed and so easily overlooked, but boy do we remember his parts so much more for the time and era..
I very much agree, thank you for watching
Great video as ever. Recently saw Peters son, who is on tour doing a show about both parents, very moving and funny, Thanks as ever x
I really enjoyed your video and subject 👍🙂
I wasn't a big fan of the 'Carry on series...' but these movies were from a golden age of British comedy and movie making.
Often featuring actors who had real life wartime experiences both over seas and on the home front.
This era of British comedy seemed to be also from a time, when folk could laugh and poke fun, without anyone taking offence or taking to social media in a fury.
British grave yards often seem to be quite run down, final resting places?
None of the manicured rolling lawns & trees as seen in Hollywood cemeteries, filled with celebrities and actors in their final resting places.
Thank you so much! It’s the actors’ lives that really interested me and I think I love them so much because they take me back to my childhood! And the sense of humour was so tongue in cheek and funny with just a look most often!
Generally speaking I don’t think we have the space for rolling lawns - I’ve been to the Hollywood cemeteries and I have to say I know Forest Lawn is huge but Westwood where Marilyn Monroe is is exceptionally small - and it’s overlooked by tower blocks - it’s a very odd place!
I also think we have older church yards dating back to medieval times - so you have older crumbling stones - such as the graveyard where Tony Hancock is!
Also (sorry but I love talking about this 🤣) now there seems to be a trend towards letting graveyards go ‘natural’ or in other words unkempt to save money on maintenance! Although - it is lovely in the summer watching the wildlife - however - it’s a problem for family ancestry because you can no longer read the stones x
It's mad how quick turnover life is, one minute it's a fabulous person, next it's the grandchildren and so on. I noticed it last year with a Robin that came to me in the Summer as a fledgling. By the next Summer he had passed on, they only live a year. I had no idea. He had nested in the time and one of his chicks took over his territory. A totally different bird. Then I realized every year, we hear a new different Robin. A constant loop of new replacing the old. It's wild because it's the same with us, a constant rotation. Where once were people that seem so big and important, is next their grandkids and so on. I always thought life was so long, but it's truly fleeting ♥
I understand - I've often contemplated this myself - although I hadn't thought about it in the context of Robins which I absolutely adore! xx
Both were my favourites-long ago and far away ( alas ). Charming video thanks
Thank you! Sometimes it seems like long ago - other times - only yesterday! ❤️
It's lovely that you took flowers to their daughter also.
Thank you so much - I couldn’t think of visiting anyone without taking flowers 💐

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre so many great one liners in the Carry Ons.... My favourite one from Camping is the iconic "ooooh, Matron..... Take them away!" uttered by Kenneth Williams when Barbara Windsor's top "flings" off wildly. All rollicking fun.
That was excellent ❤
Amazing to hear about his WW2 adventure !
Carry on screaming was my favourite

Good grief!! I did not know a fraction of that.
You present these videos with fantastic thoughtfulness and masses upon masses of background, and interesting facts and stories that just are not well known.
Impeccable presentation and a sense of empathy with the subject.
I wondered why on earth anyone followed any of these morbid videos until I stumbled upon your channel.
Thank you, and RIP your subjects.
Ohhhh 🤭🤭🤭 thank you!!!! I do love my subjects! I find their lives absolutely fascinating and often inspiring - and so many have given me happy childhood/growing up memories - watching them in films or on television was a real event with so much laughter! Thank you so much for watching - I really do appreciate that and your lovely comment! ❤️🌹
Another great video, both wonderful entertainers
On my mum's side, my nans sister was married to Peter butterworths cousins.
So I'm very proud to be very distantly related to Peter Butterworth and his wife Janet Brown.
Oh wow!!! I would be proud of that too! I think Peter and Janet were an amazingly talented couple!

I really enjoyed this. Beautiful churchyard. Whatching this from abroad it's a real treat. Nice to learn of his close friendship with his fellow prisoner of war camp friend into carry on...and I do love the sketch with Jim..."I thought I was going to break wind"😅 Thank you keep up the channel its fantastic 🤩
Thank you so much, you’ve made my day! It’s amazing how many of the wonderful entertainers in the 50s onwards were involved in heroic actions during the war! They were all so funny and I love the wind moment too 🤣 xxxx
