30 YEARS AGO in a small casino in northern Nevada my wife and I took my In-law's who were era hippies to see Dr. Hook. After the show my Father-in-law took his original album for them to sign, crawled under the curtian and shouted "WHAT A SHOW, WHAt A SHOW. We waited for about 45 min. and then went to the casino to play. Quite a few hours later we found him and he had been out back with the band getting stoned.

Loved your reaction to this. In 1973 I got the album "Freaking at the Freaker's ball" and memorized much of the album. I was in 10th grade and we would go to the woods next to the high school and smoke pot. I would entertain by reciting "Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbade Out" and "The Man Who Got No Sign". I can still recite them to this day!

Their raunchy songs, Penicillin Penny, Freakers Ball and Acapulco Goldie, pretty Carry Me Carry, tearjerker One More Year of Daddy's Little Girl, and fifties "Medley". My fave song (to this day in my top 10 and I've left instructions for this song to be played at mywake since' I've always said it's my theme song) is queen of the silver dollar. Halloween when I was 4 I my costume was the queen the lyrics speak about. Most people thought I was a beauty queen of some kind but nope, not this flower child!! Thanks for bringing a huge smile to my face!!

Shel Silverstein writes goofy songs like this and turns around and writes classic children poems (I can't get Sarah Cynthia Silvia Stout out of my head now) and then writes The Devil and Billy Markham for Playboy. Carry Me Carrie was always my fav Shel/Doc Hook song. There's a great video of them on Shel's houseboat singing the song. They are all wasted but still give a great performance.

Whoo-hoo, fun stuff, I saw Dr Hook open for the Guess Who in 1971 in the first real concert I saw at 16. I got stoned and did Not miss it, for sure! Great show with local legend, the band Fat, opened, they played a spirited set before Dr Hook came con. They were fun and everyone had a smile at the end of their set. The Guess Who was mind blowing, doing a set very similar to what you can hear on their classic double album, Live at the Pararmount. They played their big hits then did a 20+ minute jam of American Woman into Trucking Off Into the Sky. You can hear a very similar one on that live album, I can't urge you too much to react to it sometime, your listeners would love it. The jam is sublime and the vocals are insane! Great bands and times, that concert cost me $5.00. Rock On! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶🔥

Saw them live at The Regent Theatre, Sydney, in 1981. Not just great musicians but fantastic entertainers. After the intermission, Dennis Locorriere came back on stage and said the other guys must be a bit short of money, because they were out the back sharing a cigarette, to which the crowd erupted with laughter. Then he picked up a guitar and started playing "Sylvia's Mother." While he did so, the others came out one by on and joined in. The last member walked up behind Dennis, put his arms around him, and took the guitar, without missing a note. The whole night was filled with little moments like these and nobody left disappointed.

I've been clean and sober since 81, ( all glory to God), but I still crack up listening to this, and the party memories, ( What I can remember) , came flooding into my mind. Dr Hook is IMHO the most unique band ever. So out of left field, I can't even begin to describe the shock of hearing this one played on the radio for the first time. For 69 and 70 their was a song by George Baker named "Little Green Bag" . I remember listening to it during a break riding in a car taking my Sophomore Mid term exams.

Queen of the Silver Dollar is a little more serious and sad. The Doctor never disappoints

My brother played this song for our mother. When it got to the verse about seducing the virgin my mother said, “Oh, poor guy”. Mom!? 😮😆
My brother loved Freaker’s Ball too so I heard it often. It’s non-PC in a way that was entirely acceptable back then.
Add Ringo Starr’s No No song to the list of similarly themed songs. It hilarious too.
