While strongly suggestive, does the song really proclaim, with certainly, that Lola is a man? At the end of the song, the line “But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola” merely suggests Lola is glad the other is a man. This is the brilliance of the song, it takes you to the brink of discovery several times without crossing the definitive line……leaving the listener to jump to, what seems an obvious, conclusion.

Meanwhile, Jay is rocking away having no idea what just happened. Lol! It’s all good Jay. The song is rocking at that point and it’s easily missed the first time you listen to it. But I started laughing when Amber looked over at Jay and noticed he missed it and then for the rest of the song you could see she was just waiting for it to end so she could tell him. I was lucky enough to go to a school that offered Acting Arts and Technical Theater as two of the English credits (very progressive for the time) and I thought, 'Why Not?' and went which was one of the better choices of my life. I got heavy into theater from that, but most importantly I met my best friend... who happened to be gay (I am not.) As an assignment, we had to pick a song and act it out (I chose 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer') and he chose this one... which was my first hint. The class went crazy over it. This was released in 1970-71, so it's more likely Lola was simply a transvestite, but I don't think it matters in the long run. The narrator in the song accepts the fact Lola still has her male genitalia despite her outward appearance, or he wouldn't have it revealed in the closing line " I know what I am and that is a man, and so is Lola." The concept of transgender as we know it today was still germinating back then, so it is possible Lola wanted to transition, but the actual surgeries and hormone treatments were not as advanced as today. Still super expensive then as now.

The Kinks are incredible. Probably their most known song is either "You Really Got Me" or "All Day, And All of the Night" - both of them powerful, rocking anthems popular in clubs and as music in movies, etc. I'd say that "Lola" is really even more known, but due to the subject matter, well, it gets suppressed. The Kinks were banned in many, many parts of the USA, which of course limited their careers (A record label has to decide where to invest for the best returns as a business after all) because of this song in particular.
For me, their story-telling part was always superb, even more than their rocking numbers, so I really love "Waterloo Sunset" (Amber will adore it) but even more so "Come Dancing" which is like a love-letter from the band to the old clubs and music halls that have vanished from today's towns and cities, such that today you might go to one place to hear live bands, but can't dance there, or go to another club to dance, but won't have live music. ua-cam.com/video/xRUE0aAI5o8/v-deo.html

When they came back on for the encore (first gig), Ray advised that he was dedicating the next song to his brother Dave and went straight into Days. Such an awesome band live or recorded, though both times I saw them (both times were in ‘93) it was in very different environments. So many classic stories from the pen of Ray Davies, and all wonderful in their own way. Pete Quaife and the Davies brothers went to school with Rod Stewart, who sang with them in the Spring of 1962 before they came up with the Kinks name. They would play under the name of the person who got the booking, so the Ray Davies Quintet or Pete Quaife Quartet would appear in the area regularly.
