They were both singing it to each other at the end. It was priceless. They both were in the moment and are paying for each other for the rest of the life. This song was perfection!!!
check her and a few other female singers out on Jim Steinman's Pandora's Box Album ---my favorite is Original Sin. Its criminal how underrated and unknown that Album is She was also a good actress on Night Court TV sitcom
Ellen Foley is fantastic and her contribution to this epic is worthy of credit, but is it really the case that she doesn't get that credit? I don't know anyone who loves this song and isn't aware and appreciative of her part in it.
Truthfully, Meatloaf really WAS an actor!! He was in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" among several other movies. He was one of the most expressive singers and sadly, we lost him far too soon!! "Bat Out of Hell" remains one of my favorite albums of all time. Rest in Peace, Meatloaf; you are deeply missed!!
When we told the DJ that he was going to play this song at my wife and I's wedding reception, he looked at us in horror. Before he played it, we had all the guys and all the girls line up across from each other. It was the hit we expected it to be. Everyone got into it. Old, young, people who didn't know the words and people who did. The guys sang the guys part, the girls sang the girls part. It was an amazing time. We are still happily married 23 years later and NOT praying for the end of time to hurry up and arrive.
other than the two of you being married that had to be the highlight of the reception wish i could have been apart of it sound's like a great time was had by all
It’s not right after the night together. The kids got married. Later (That night was long ago and far away so much better than it is today) and he says he won’t break the vow, but it’s changed, he will keep his promise til the end of time - so they’re praying for the end of Time. A metaphor for the regret they feel, despite the nostalgia for the memories of the passion. For that generation, many could see in their families couples that have stayed despite fighting, bickering, etc., even by the late 70s divorce had a stigma associated with it and the Courts were reluctant to grant it without trying alternative attempts to keep families together. I remember numerous couples relating to this as they lost the live for their spouse but stayed together for the kids, faith, or whatever. Teens related it to the pressures and risks of rushing into intimacy in relationships, etc., but you hit on it, the dramatic entertainment of the song was simply fun. Also it was usually years before we saw this video, it was before the days of music videos and MTV. The song itself was an incredible dramatic listen and Jim Steinman’s music had your feet jumping … it was an experience in addition to being a brilliant song idea.
But Jay had already reacted to this a while ago and all this was explained, but he still thinks its all the same night (does he read the comments I wonder)???
They both can’t wait ‘till the end of time, after years of marriage “I’ll never break my promise of forget my vow”. It shows the commitment in the heat of passion isn’t always best.
Took the words right out of my mouth! I think that's what makes this song so funny! It is obvious that's not what he wanted but it is not what she ultimately wanted either.
@@tmkellison4016 and her reprise overlaid of the "It never felt so good, It never felt so right. We're glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife" lyric.
They mention vows- he did marry her. That’s why he says it was long ago and things were better then. It’s years later snd the marriage went downhill because they married so young and immaturely. The funny thing is, this was the song they played as a joke, for me and my husbands first wedding dance. Because our first outing together was a lake trip, but with friends. So we went with it and laughed. We are now celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary ( and 5 kids) next week. We play it every year snd dance together in the family room- we consider it our lucky song to remind us of what real love is.
My husband and I have been together since '89. This song has always been a joke between us. For totally different reasons then than now (which you obviously understand if it's your song too 😁🤘✌ 'It was long ago and it was far away and it was so much better than it is today ' Thank God my husband has an awesome sense of humor 😄
Meatloaf was a rock god. Ellen Foley and Meatloaf together so phenomenal it was amazing. Amazing reaction. Honestly it is so fun watching someone who has never heard Paradise.
Meatloaf was the epitome of "rock opera." Everything he did was theatrical, especially his concerts, you'd think you were at a Broadway show. He was incredible, arguably one of the most underrated artists in the industry.
Meatloaf began his career in musical theatre. In the early Seventies he performed in the Rocky Horror (stage) Show on Broadway (playing both Eddie and Dr. Scott) and in Los Angeles. He also performed in the L.A. production of "Hair." Meatloaf is what's called a Heldentenor, an "heroic tenor" in opera. Jim Steinman, the band's piano player, wrote the music and songs for "Bat Out of Hell" album and described his music as "Wagnerian rock."
@@aebalc He was underrated, in that - despite his album success, he never gained the mainstream popularity of other elite artists during his time. And Bat Out of Hell initially didn't sell well, in the US or UK in particular, because Brits didn't really know who he was. The video for the song Bat Out of Hell was released early in the UK on a popular tv show, and that's when UK audiences started buying the album. What popularity he did have in the US at the time was mostly built on his Broadway performances in Hair and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. | And a big chunk of his sales for Bat Out of Hell came in the 90s, after the release of Bat Out of Hell II:Back Into Hell. I Would Do Anything for Love was a smash hit, and had X-gens like me going back to find the first album. Th X-gens had also grown up on The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the cult following of which exploded in the mid 80s and 90s. So we knew who Meatloaf was. When BOoH II came out, we went nuts. My mom had his BOoH album, so I didn't have to go buy it. But I never listened to it until the second one came out and it made me wonder about the first. | He's always had a cult following but, in the recording industry, he's always been considered more of an eccentric artist with a niche style that didn't have universal appeal. And so many people in the industry believed he never got the full respect for how talented he really was. I always thought that as well and, after he died last January, a number of tributes went out to him. And It struck me how many artists mentioned him being underrated, and I felt a little better, that I didn't misread him, many in the industry thought the same thing. Apparently, many felt the fact that he hadn't been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was an indication of that.
I laughed so hard I nearly pee'd my pants! Between her absolute look of confusion, his clearly getting into the song, including the lyrics, and then her look of disgust when it finally hit her what was going on....OMG...so funny!
Amber had me laughing hysterically throughout the entire performance. I am 53 and a couple years ago I was sitting in Starbucks sipping on my latte, killing time before heading over to my doctors appointment. I was a regular there as the store was located 2 minutes from the hospital district that was my home away from home. Anways, I am sipping my latte, laughing to myself as this song is blasting in my headphones. One of the girls, baristas, comes walking by to go on her break and stops in front of me and motioned me to pause the music. I did and I told her I was laughing about the song. She was about 21-22 years old and wanted to listen, so I gave her my headphones and started the song over. That poor girl, I was fighting laughing at her facial expressions. I think she was a few minutes from an aneurysm after the last 5 minutes of the song. She stood there stunned and I had noticed the song had switched and "Two Out Of Three" had started playing. She took the headphones off and looked me dead in the eye and asked me "What play/show that Paradise was from?" She didn't believe me tgat this was just a song off from one of his albums. Then she was confused how "Two Out of Three" could be so beautiful after the frantic song prior to it... Great review you two, I needed a good laugh tonight... Amber, listen to Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad...
Meat Loaf's songwriter, Jim Steinman, actually adapted a few of the songs on Bat out of Hell from a musical of his called Neverland which was a sci-fi retelling of the Peter Pan story. Paradise wasn't one of those songs, but later Jim just went and turned Bat out of Hell into its own stage musical.
@@jeffaube I am still walking and breathing. So many with my condition are in a wheelchair within a year of coming down with it. Yes, music REALLY has helped get me through the tough times until I finally was able to get my illness into remission a few years back... Thank you for the thoughts.
This is your best reaction video ever. Amber’s reaction was priceless when she realized he said he would love her ‘til the end of time, and then he’s praying for the end of time.
They both actually seem to miss the bit where he said he would "love her to the end of time" so they _really_ missed the true import of ( them _both_ ) "praying for the end of time".
Nothing gives me more joy than watching people experience this song for the first time. Imagine being in high school, circa 1986, partying at the house of whosever parent's weren't home, and all the guys singing Meat Loaf's part, and all the girls singing Ellen's part..ahhh so. much. fun. You guys will love the entire Bat Out of Hell album - especially Amber. Amber, if you love musical theater, watch the rest of Meat Loaf's videos. All the songs are about angsty love. Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, Bat Out of Hell, You Took The Words Right Out of my Mouth (my fave), For Crying Out Loud (another fave), and I Would do Anything For Love. All great choices. All fun choices. Enjoy!
I wish I could say I was old enough to comment, but I was 7 in 1986 lol. Although, I was there when MTV first came on the air so I guess that has to be good enough lol. I do remember in the 90's watching Rocky Horror every Halloween and the absolute shock and amazement one year after the movie ended and immediately after the debut of I'll do anything for love came on.
Teenage Hormones: The Musical. Honestly, this is a 3 act show, and nobody EVER expects this in a rock n roll song. Jim Steinman (the songwriter) and Meatloaf were absolute geniuses
I am 78 years old. I have heard most of the songs that you guys react to hundreds of times. Many are ingrained in my soul. So seeing you react for the FIRST time to the music that is so normal to me is wonderful. Music - truly universal given half a chance.
I'm in the same age group, but when I was a kid I knew songs from the 20s and 30s and all kinds of genres. Folk, jazz, big band, symphony and even opera. When I was 11 or 12 I started listening to Elvis, Buddy Holly, lots of Rock a Billy and just have had music in my life ALL my life. Luckily my parents loved music. Rock n roll not so much. LOL It's a bit disappointing to see so many people locked into one era, one genre. I know every word to that song and most of the other Meatloaf/Jim Steinman songs. Too great.
I'm 62 but I was also 17 when this song came out! Except I was a good girl and NOT like these two. Still, it was such a great song, lyrics and music, and I can remember so may people getting pulled over for speeding tickets because of the way the music/lyrics get faster...like you're compelled to just stomp on the gas! And I agree - love seeing younger people, especially people of color, listening to the older songs that they never really gave any thought to. I think it bridges a lot of gaps to realize that throughout time, we're not all that different from each other.
They were BOTH singing "Im praying for the end of time" because neither of them wanted to spend another minute with the other. Remember at the beginning of the song how he sings "I remember every little thing, as if it happened only yesterday" so the implication is they are years into an unhappy marriage and they both can no longer stand each other. Such an amazing theatrical performance. Im sad I never got to see Meatloaf live. If you want to see him act, you should watch the movie Fight Club. Stellar supporting performance by him, and a great movie!
If you want to see Meat act, the movie to see is "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Watch him being interviewed about it first, it was his first film appearance.
You kept calling it a one-act play, but it's a 3-acter. The song has three parts, and it tells the full story of 3 acts. The way this song is structures is still genius. A timeless classic.
It is a play, so she’s on to something early on. In her defense, she says it in the first act, not knowing what would follow. And the album was originally conceived as a play. Something about Neverland, but it got scaled back to just the album.
Shows how old fashioned this song is from 30 years ago. Back then you actually honored you commitments. Even when given under “duress” :). Also no mention of drinking or drugs. Just honest teenage hormones.
Jim Steinman is a freaking genius. Seriously, this is Broadway musical theater disguised as rock and that it charted that high back in the day is pretty incredible. I was a teenager when this came out. The abrupt change-ups in the song really caught my ear.
I'm glad you referred to "Rock Opera", you beat me to it! This is a production, in a similar vein to "Rocky Horror Picture Show". It was a cool time. Man, I was in love with Carla😏
We lost the Big Guy last night at the age of 74. RIP Meat. Thank you for sharing your amazing voice and talent with the world. Your contribution to Rock n Roll will live forever.
Amber's facial expressions, throughout this song when should understood what the lyrics were about, were hilarious. She goes from smiling and laughing, to flabbergasted and jaw dropped. And the "WHAT THE?" had me rolling as she didn't expect those changes. WHAT A FUNNY, HONEST REACTION to Meatloaf. 👍👍
Meat is so dramatic, he started out as an actor. He's been in over 60 films. Bat Out Of Hell is one of the top albums of all time, cannot be taken. He is also so damn sexy.... My favorite is "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" and "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad." Enjoy
Meat Loaf was actually part of the musical "Hair" in 1968, which is where Jim Steinman saw him and offered him the vocalist part for his 'tour de force' "Bat Out Of Hell".... the rest, as they say, is history....!!
I have heard this song hundreds of times and I rock with it every time. I also crack up every time he starts with "can I sleep on it"?. Meatloaf is one of the most underrated musical acts in the business. Every song was a play.
Hahahaha. I had a friend in high school that introduced me to Meatloaf, and the first time I heard this I cracked up hearing Loaf say “let me sleep on it”. We nick named my buddy Meatloaf, or “Loaf” for short. He hated it, but we still call him that to this day.
I just can’t look at Meatloaf and not think of the movie “Rocky Horror Picture Show”. He was great in the movie. If you haven’t ever seen it he movie you need to go to a midnight showing at your local theater it’s a great experience. It’s the longest running movie and it’s interactive which is why you need to go to a late showing. I first went I was 4 years old (my mother didn’t believe in leaving me at home, if she was going I went everywhere with her)and I’ve gone almost every year since. Also if you ever want to hear another good one from Meatloaf checkout “Bat out of Hell”
We are lucky enough to still have a drive-in movie close to where I live, and they showed Rocky during the height of the pandemic. It was pretty awesome. The only downside was you couldn't leave your car, but everyone had their windows down so there was a bunch of bad singing, lots of toast was chucked out windows, and we had to fill up the windshield washer fluid the next day!
I just remember some movie with a van broke down on the side of the road and some chick with stiffitts in a little shirt. Was it roadie? Recommend for wardrobe alone.
OMG! I'm such a geek for the RHPS lmao 🤣 idk what it is other than Tim Curry as Franken Furter and of course the fun and catchy music, but I absolutely love it! I've got the movies, collectables, posters, comics, away albums etc... lol I would love if there existed a full recording of a showing of the original Musial or one of the original beau's when it opened in the U.S. at The Roxy, but pictures and the original live albums are enough! Lol I still haven't ever been to a midnight showing, or in an audience participation (idk how safe that is nowadays tho) but I'd still go if I have the chance! Lol The movie has a great cast, young movie stars in the making like, Susan Sarandon & of course Meatloaf, he's actually very good on film and at theatrics, which is kind of obvious if you've ever watched any of his concerts or live stage performances. I've got the remake movie too, there's a lot of credible celebrities in that one also and very talented, still nothing beats the original, at least imo. The comment about not having Meatloaf again is said in the remake version as a nod to the actual Meatloaf playing "Eddie" in the original & also bc it's insinuated that Fter the I e pick incident Franken Furter has him prepared & served to the guests & they unknowingly eat him at dinner, yeah if You haven't seen this cult gem, it's shocking, crazy, weird, silly, & a funny sci Fi/horror/rock musical, I left out provocative, unapologetic, & sensual lol I know this started out about Meatloaf but I took it somewhere else. Woops! I wonder what Jay & Ambers reactions would be to this one????!!! I think they would find the art in it and an appreciation for it, also I think you can draw your own conclusions or take something from it that applies to life and ones individuality & freedoms, even if there isn't supposed to be a moral as the writer has said, you can still find something hidden there. I just think it would be an amusing and hilarious reaction to watch tho😆 If they start doing reviews or reactions to movies ALSO, I think that would be interesting and fun, but like with movies and maybe documentaries just associated with & about music. So to keep the musical aspect there but expand on even more musical knowledge of history of the songs, artists, back stories etc... There's a wide variety right there with biopics, musicals, rock operas, band/music documentaries, concert movies, movies with bands/artists starring in them, & all the great fictional music movies. I'd like to watch reactios with them of the movies that everyone has sent them, they all are greats & ive got a few in mind I really want them to see, I know that would be more time consuming, especially with editing & their busy lives with parenting, work, the kids and with the new arrival almost there!💙 It's just something that came to my always rambling mind that I think would be fun, but I definitely love their music reactions here & wouldn't want that to change either. Love watching them, they are so good together and doing this YT & musical journey as a team, love the positive vibes and the strong appreciation for music c and art, I love how y'all don't take things for granted and how that you have a wonderful and strong structure of family built on love, positivity, & doing things as a family unit. I sincerely pray that many more BLESSINGS will continuouslu come your way🤗💟🎶☮️
This album is a gem, I feel like everyone misses the fact that she was also singing that she was waiting for the end of time it was mutual regret that they married for the wrong reasons and made each other unhappy. it's kind of a social commentary on societal expectations vs instinctual behavior.
Yes exactly, the verse that goes "so now Im praying for the end of time..." they are singing this verse in unison. Also if you watch any of the live performances at the end of the song they'd have fights/arguments and he'd call her a "bitch" and she'd call him a "dick." Great Song! It's actuall my favorite Meatloaf song.
The woman who actually sang this is Ellen Foley, Carla lipsynced this for the video.Ellen Foley was in the musical " Hair " and played Billie on the tv show " Nightcourt "
Hahaha. When I was 17 this was my FAVORITE song. It got on my bfs nerves. 34 years later my bf is my husband and we now always sing the end 'at' each other: 'praying for the end of time...to hurry up and arrive...' joking, of course... Kinda 😏😄
Exactly! I could see her trying to find the right words to describe it. I'm yelling musical theater!!! Lol aka Rock Opera is what it was called at the time. Unique. The whole album is a musical play.
I was a junior in high school when the "Bat out of Hell" album came out in 1977. I bought the vinyl album and later bought it on CD and I still have both. Still one of my favorites and I'm 60 years old now! Great reaction!!
In his defense, he swore that he would love her til the end of time, and he stuck by his vow. They said it was long ago and far away, and both of them were praying for the end of time. It's a great song and a great performance. I have so much fun watching y'all.
This is a key component of the story. They were barely 17, raging hormones, and had no idea what they wanted. So enamored by the heat of the moment, they got caught up, and years later, grew to realize that they were just young and dumb, and now they're miserable woth each other. Anyone who shacked up with a teen sweetheart and stayed for years and years never having the courage to break that vow and leave, will really get this one. What a masterpiece.
Remember he sang i won't break my promise of forget my vow . And it was long ago and far away and so much better than it is today. It's the story of a young love affair then marriage being looked back on in regret by both of them.
The impact of Meat and what happened when the Bat out of Hell album dropped, was huge. Meat was the man when it came to quality and presentation. RIP Meatloaf, you are certainly missed
Amber your reaction is 100% spot on, how it feels like a dramatic show instead of just music. Meat Loaf came from a musical theatre background right in the late 60s / early 70s dawn of Rock Opera (Hair, Rocky Horror, etc). The Bat Out Of Hell album is practically a rock opera, so many long epic tracks that tell wild stories!
I was going to say something similar but you got it spot on. When she said she felt like she was watching a show, she got it. She got the song and she got Meatloaf.
Don't forget that there is a story across 3 songs, one song to one album. Bat out of Hell, I would do anything for love and I'd lie for you and that's the truth.
Meat was classically trained in voice and theater. His vocal range has no boundaries and his performances truly are theatrical. Two Out of Three Ain't Bad is a beautiful ballad, and one of my favorites. Check out his acting in the cult classic, Rocky Horror Picture Show!
RIP Meatloaf... I was 15 years old when this came out in 1977... A short time later I got my driver's license and got my first car girlfriend. And yeah... I had a lake right down the hill from my house! I'm an old white guy and I love watching your reactions to the music I grew up on 40+ years ago.
OMG, Amber your face was PRICELESS!!! This is perfection and completely reflects all of our faces as we heard this song for the first time. Utter buzz kill on the wrap. Chronic buyer's remorse!! I had never seen the video before. It had always been in my imagination. All I could see now was Meatloaf being covered by Chris Farley or even John Belushi. Crazy!
In fairness at the end of the song he sad he wouldn’t forget his promise or break his vow. they are both praying for the end of time. He kept his promise and they’re both miserable. Such a great song and performance.
A lot of people miss that it's not the next day, but years later and that they both are done with the relationship. Karla even kicks at 'loaf, and he still gets blamed for being just like a man.
@@tedmaloof234 exactly! I always see them as a “disillusioned” middle aged married couple at the end of the song praying for the sweet release of death. 😀
Literally not one bad song on this album. “For crying out loud” is one of the sweetest songs ever on the same album. Jim Stienman wrote all the songs, he also wrote “total eclipse of the hart”, “I need a hero”, “making love out of nothing at all” and the soundtrack to the movie “streets of fire”.
It's not an immediate switch to the "praying for the end of time." At the end of the song, he says, "It was long ago, and it was far away And it was so much better than it is today". The entire album, Bat Out Of Hell, was pretty much issued to kids in the late 70s/early 80s worldwide sales of 50 million, which is 17x platinum. The album is excellent. Try the songs " Bat Out Of Hell" and "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth". You could pick any song from the album and not be disappointed.
Not only is it not an immediate switch to "prayin' for the end of time", he also says, "I'll never break my promise or forget my vows" so they had been married for awhile before he started praying for the end of time. The song begins as a flashback to when they were 17 and ends as a married couple who can't stand each other, or at least the husband can't stand the wife anymore. Which brings me to a song by Weird Al called "One More Minute" where Al describes all the things he'd rather do than spend one more minute with this woman including cleaning all the bathrooms in Grand Central Station with his tongue. Hilarious!
@@mikemiller3069 They were both singing the lines of waiting for the end of time, and doubting their ability to survive another minute together. But they both remember the passion of their youth fondly.
To me, this is THE rock opera, the one that spoke to my teenage heart, and it's still as magnificent as it was when it came out in 1977. With Steinman's music and lyrics, and Meat Loaf's stunning voice (and the immortal Ellen Foley on backup) how can you NOT love it?
While Ellen Foleys stunning voice was on backup she was not in this music video her voice but the actual women playing the part of the singer is Karla DeVito. Interesting Meat did this again on Bat out of Hell 2 with Id do anything for love in a similar fashion Lorraine Crosby who was credited only as "Mrs. Loud" she sang the backup but it’s not her in the video, her vocals are lip-synched by Dana Patrick. Meat Loaf promoted the single with American singer Patti Russo.I saw both of them do sll tip here songs in the early 2000s world wide tour they did, amazing concert.
@@maverick2242 yep, I know, and all of these ladies are amazing, but I'm used to listening to the cd and Ellen is on that. Karla DeVito is a helluva voice too.
One of the best rock voices ever! Meat was a customer of mine for over 20 years when he lived in Westport. I knew him well and what a fantastic human being he was. God bless you Meat!
Nope! At the end, he is singing "It was long ago and far away, It was so much better than it is today". She is singing, "It never felt so right, it never felt so good, It feels much better than I thought it should". Two different views of the same situation.....(although the woman may be trying to convince herself that the relationship is good, when it isn't. Women are like that at times...) (That last comment may get me in trouble because women hate the truth about such things.....)
@@hiredgun05 Those statements say exactly the same thing. The only difference is how its affected them. She's heartbroken and he's angry but both of them remember a better time in their relationship.
@@hiredgun05 [Girl repeat until the end:] It never felt so good, it never felt so right And we were glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife This is the Girl remembering that the relationship 'was' so good and right, and Hot! This song is my childhood! My parents cleaned the house on Saturday mornings, and my dad would BLARE this on the record player while he cleaned :) for 19 years of my life, I heard meatloaf every Saturday morning :) Blast from the past that was!
This song has such a 60s "doo whoop" vibe. It's brilliant. And don't get too angry with him about praying for the end of time, she was singing it too, so the feeling was mutual.
Come on … lessgo “Bat out of hell” “Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad” “For Crying Out Loud” Why did Ellen Foley not tour with Meat Loaf? With her voice, she landed a contract to do her own projects, which meant by the time “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” was released, she was too busy launching her solo career. Therefore, she declined Meat Loaf's offer to go on tour with him; hence, she was replaced by Karla DeVito. Final note: Rob’s peaking out on the lyrics is too much … put it back in your pants bro ba ha ha ha ha Meanwhile Amber is all about the dramatic theatre … she cracking me off with her facials ha ha ha
She got it! Just listened to an interview with Meatloaf on NPR. And Meatloaf, himself, said that he was an actor that wished he could sing! He never felt like a singer! But felt like he was an actor pulling off a roll as a singer!!!
This is not them looking back a few days, this is a middle aged couple talking about how they wound up in a dead end marriage. Meatloaf did have a significant acting career in addition to his music.
Exactly!' How is it that our age group got that yet all these reaction videos don't get it. Our era of music can not be duplicated, so glad I grew up during these times. Oh, the memories! Love Meatloaf!
He loved it and she was like, "what the hell!?" The perfect guy-gal split reaction to one of the truest songs ever written. RIP Meat. I knew the man, and he was a great person.
It was a one-act play, all of it nostalgia. As the song started and ended, they were both saying "It was long ago, and it was far away, and it was so much better than it is today." They married, they made their vows and promises, and both came to regret them over time. Long after the marriage began, they lost what they had as 17 year olds, so they're BOTH praying for the end of time to hurry up and arrive. But they still remember the burning passions of their teen years.
Key line in that song is “I started swearing to my God and on my mother’s grave”. That’s why he kept his word. He then says “I’ll never break my promise or forget my vow”.
Your first description of it being like a one act play was an incredibly astute observation. Like many songs in the 70's and 80's, the song truly tells a story.
OMG this was hilarious watching y'all! ROFL Just loved it. Amber's reaction was so funny. That's what meatloaf did. He was a performer as much as a singer. I'd love for y'all to do another of his songs, I'd do anything for love. That's a great one too.
Ha-ha. Amber's reactions are priceless. She picked up on the fact that it is a musical or rock opera. She remarked on the fear of commitment in his eyes and was bummed when he put her off, (let me sleep on it.") She shouted. "He don't love you girl!", and was offended when he broke his promise. To be fair, they were both praying for the end time. Great reaction video, Jordan & Amber.
Yep, I think they both missed these two important things, that make the story even better - that he was never going to break his promise or forget his vow, and that they were *both* praying for the end of time. It was interesting to see the different perspective though between someone hearing this for the first time now, and how we all heard it when it first came out. Times were different then.
It isn't the moment after the "deed" that they are saying they want the end of time to hurry up.It is after he commits himself to staying with her and they have spent time together ,that they both find that making a promise (for him) or getting promised to(for her)wasn't what made them happy after all. This was and probably still is an all to common occurrence for teenage love.Like you said it is hormones and what was expected for a girl to want from a boy if she gave "it" up for him.
The whole album is incredible - especially "For Crying Out Loud". Meat Loaf is the consummate performer. He puts everything out there on stage. I saw him in concert about 10 years ago, long after his prime, but you would never have guessed - he was still that amazing! Every Meatloaf song is a mini rock opera. He was one of the greatest singers and an amazing stage presence. "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" is heartbereaking, and "Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through" are two great songs to which I'd love to see the Rob Squad's reaction. Great Show. Keep it going.
@@Dee-JayW, ironically, I was (barely) 17 when I first saw Meat Loaf in concert, January 1990 with my Dad who was 6 years younger than I am now! Best concert, ever! Another Meat Loaf song that's similar is "Bat of Hell"; an Amber-friendly song of Meat Loaf's--the sax-heavy All Revved Up with No Place to Go. Meat Loaf also did a duet with Cher--"Dead Ringer"
@@jimmcevers9443 Before he became famous with the "Bat out of hell" album he made an album with a woman named Stoney as "Stoney and Meat Loaf". You can find the album on YT. I really like it. But I don't know who Stoney is.

Most people miss his first words and his last words in this song, "It was long ago and far away, it was so much better than it is today". This song is about a married couple who made a decision one night long ago in the heat of passion. Now they both realize they made a mistake and can not stand each other. Divorce was frowned upon. You made a promise and you keep the promise. I am so old that I keep waiting for the "click" in the middle of the song. For you young people this album came out on 8 track tape. They only had 8 songs on them. PARADISE BY THE DASHBOARD LIGHT is a long song and was divided on 2 tracks, half the song on 1 track - click,click- then the song would continue on the next one. 8 track cassettes were notorious for eating the tape inside but the albums were great because you got 8 great songs instead of 2 good songs and 20 filler songs like you get now.
That's always what I got from the song. A married couple who realizes that the decision they made in the heat of passion was not the best but not wanting to break the vows they made to each other.
I know those clicks! I, without my parent's permission, signed up for one of those music clubs where you would get 12 albums/8 tracks of your choice for free, then you had to buy so many more in a certain time period. The bad part is they would auto-send something random every month, and if you didn't send it back, the bill would start adding up. Ooops! I was 13 and didn't even have a job 😕😜!
Meatloaf was an actor more than anything. It's even better that he's a great singer and he throws himself 110% into stage performance. His music videos are some of the greatest. Every album he sings like it's a character in a story.
Steinman also write total eclipse of the heart for Bonnie Tyler Another great theatrical song well worth a listen, Tyler’s original promotional video makes no sense at all but the song is great
After hearing the news of Meat's passing, going through UA-cam and I am so glad I stumbled on this video. It put a smile on my face. Thanks so much for a great video. She was spot on, Meat saw himself as an actor first and each song was a play.
Amber, I love your reaction! When this song came out, it was the anthem of every teen-age boy who could sing along word for word. Listen to it a few more times and you'll discover how hilarious it is.

Both of them said they couldn't spend another minute, but that they would keep their promise.

He also performed in the L.A. production of "Hair."
Meatloaf is what's called a Heldentenor, an "heroic tenor" in opera. Jim Steinman, the band's piano player, wrote the music and songs for "Bat Out of Hell" album and described his music as "Wagnerian rock."
Oh yeah ... I saw him and his band onstage in the 90s for the "Bat Out of Hell II" tour. They knocked it outa the park!
Can't call him under-rated that album is among the top 20 albums ever sold.
Agreed
@@aebalc
He was underrated, in that - despite his album success, he never gained the mainstream popularity of other elite artists during his time.
|
|
I love the expressions on Amber's face. I've heard this song 1000 times, but Amber's reactions make it so much better.
Amber’s reaction is priceless! 🤣
I laughed so hard I nearly pee'd my pants! Between her absolute look of confusion, his clearly getting into the song, including the lyrics, and then her look of disgust when it finally hit her what was going on....OMG...so funny!
SO TRUE!!!
@Zane Thind Amber's expressions just had me rolling with laughter.... like "how dare he do that!" ....that was a classic reaction...Great job "J"!

LOL
It's a bit disappointing to see so many people locked into one era, one genre.

I sincerely pray that many more BLESSINGS will continuouslu come your way🤗💟🎶☮️
Girl, this was absolutely the best reaction to this song ever!
This album is a gem, I feel like everyone misses the fact that she was also singing that she was waiting for the end of time it was mutual regret that they married for the wrong reasons and made each other unhappy. it's kind of a social commentary on societal expectations vs instinctual behavior.
That is the WHOLE POINT!!!
The both regret it. But she had to get that promise. Stupid social constructs.
And she is singing that way back then, it wasn't all that good and still isn't good.
"it was long ago, and it was far away,
And it was so much better than it is today"
People miss this nuance at the end 💜😂
"Glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife". What a freaking lyric and the way he sings it just brings it to life.
The most accurate love song every written. Guys definitely understand.
I'm a girl and I agree we can be sun indecisive nags lol
@@vanessalawrence1008 She was not indecisive. She wanted him to put a ring on it before she gave up the cookie.
Woman understand too, very accurate!
Hahaha. When I was 17 this was my FAVORITE song. It got on my bfs nerves. 34 years later my bf is my husband and we now always sing the end 'at' each other: 'praying for the end of time...to hurry up and arrive...'
joking, of course...
Kinda 😏😄
Women definitely understand. She's not teasing - she's just got more at stake.
She didn't "fall for it." She wanted it just as badly as he did. They were BOTH praying for the end of time.
Exactly the whole point was both of them got what they wanted and neither thought of the aftermath, typical hormone kids😆
Meatloaf was made for Broadway. Every song was a mini-show in itself. Absolutely epic.
Meatloaf was Eddie in Rocky Horror Picture Show. If I'm not mistaken it was actually his first gig.
@@TheElvis60 I think it was. Man does not get enough credit. Hell him as Bob is an amazing acting performance

@@awkwardme5375 Yes, they're BOTH praying...it wasn't what either of them wanted.
"practically"? rock opera???? NO... this is one of the DEFINITVE rock opera albums.
Kids these days dont know what real music and videoclips are with all that crap they see nowadays on Tiktok and instagram..... so pityfull
I was 25 yrs old when it cam out and I still like it LOL
A good year 1962…..
Crazy!
"STOP RIGHT THERE " you two!!! LOL
Great ole tune!
"Bat out of Hell" an American classic album!
Be for you go anu further do ya love me will ya love me forever
In fairness at the end of the song he sad he wouldn’t forget his promise or break his vow. they are both praying for the end of time. He kept his promise and they’re both miserable. Such a great song and performance.
A lot of people miss that it's not the next day, but years later and that they both are done with the relationship. Karla even kicks at 'loaf, and he still gets blamed for being just like a man.
@@tedmaloof234 exactly! I always see them as a “disillusioned” middle aged married couple at the end of the song praying for the sweet release of death. 😀
@@tedmaloof234 the lyrics at the beginning and end make it clear that the song is a story about something “long ago and far away”
' Took the words right out of my mouth '
and I would love a reaction of all the above

It's not an immediate switch to the "praying for the end of time." At the end of the song, he says, "It was long ago, and it was far away
And it was so much better than it is today".
Would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
@@rejektppc Yes...." I bet you say that to all the boys!"
I used to use that passage to show off my new new toy a CD player.

Two different views of the same situation.....(although the woman may be trying to convince herself that the relationship is good, when it isn't. Women are like that at times...)
(That last comment may get me in trouble because women hate the truth about such things.....)

The woman singing with him is
Ellen Foley. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to keep up with Meatloaf on stage and she just kills it!
The woman in the video is Karla DeVito. Ellen Foley is the actual singer on the song, but does not appear in the video.
Karla made all the public performances as Ellen had other commitments.
Ellen was the attorney on the first season of Night Court
Ellen is his really his wife
Karla devito is Danny's sister
This song is “one act”. Listen to the entire ALBUM! It is an entire SHOW! A complete story.❤

Truth! I have this album.
Come on … lessgo
“Bat out of hell”
“Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad”
“For Crying Out Loud”
Why did Ellen Foley not tour with Meat Loaf?
With her voice, she landed a contract to do her own projects, which meant by the time “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” was released, she was too busy launching her solo career. Therefore, she declined Meat Loaf's offer to go on tour with him; hence, she was replaced by Karla DeVito.
Final note: Rob’s peaking out on the lyrics is too much … put it back in your pants bro ba ha ha ha ha
Meanwhile Amber is all about the dramatic theatre … she cracking me off with her facials ha ha ha
Definitely Bat Out of Hell and Hot Patotie, Bless My Soul. Also, I love Objects in the Rearview Mirror and I'd Do Anything for Love.
Also i believe Ellen was on the tv show "Night Court" so she definitely was caught up in other obligations.

Just died laughing watching Amber's reactions throughout this video! Music of the '70s; you gotta love it!
Exactly!

Amber! Lol! I think we all reacted like that the first time hearing Paradise...love your priceless reactions!
It was a one-act play, all of it nostalgia. As the song started and ended, they were both saying "It was long ago, and it was far away, and it was so much better than it is today."
They married, they made their vows and promises, and both came to regret them over time. Long after the marriage began, they lost what they had as 17 year olds, so they're BOTH praying for the end of time to hurry up and arrive. But they still remember the burning passions of their teen years.
Yeah, really important to realize that they are both singing the final verse together. They both want out.
And then Meatloaf is getting out of there "Like A Bat Out of Hell"
@@EmperorSmith And he can see his heart, still beating...
Ya know, you took the words right out of my mouth!
He’ll never break his promise! Or forget his vow!
Yep! Bofe - Uv - Dem... Prayin'
And he IS an actor...he was in Fight Club and played Eddie in Rocky Horror Picture Show...which, if you haven't seen that, you absolutely must. It's weird, but wonderful - and Tim Curry is amazing as the main character.
My favorite song is Heaven Can Wait. This is such a great album

I have only 32 8-tracks, but 4 are Meatloaf! :)
That's always what I got from the song. A married couple who realizes that the decision they made in the heat of passion was not the best but not wanting to break the vows they made to each other.
Evil 8-Track clicks never go away.
And they were barely 17...
"I would do anything for love" is a Meat Loaf must.
That song becomes either hilarious or incredibly sad if listened to back to back with Paradise by the Dashboard Light.
We had so much fun with. This song going to the clubs in the 80s it was a great time back then.
Meatloaf was an actor more than anything. It's even better that he's a great singer and he throws himself 110% into stage performance. His music videos are some of the greatest. Every album he sings like it's a character in a story.
