so I have a Jim Stafford story for ya'll! I am in Canada. For many years I worked for the Calgary Stampede. during this time Jim Stafford was performing on the free Coke Stage every night. He was staying in a hotel across the very busy street and would have to walk a long way around to get in a gate. So he made his own gate. He cut out a part of the fence and every evening he would cross the busy road and sneak in that way. and every couple of days our ground crew wound fix the fence. after a couple of years of this, we made him his own gate, just for him.
I saw him play in Ottawa. He opened for Kenny Rogers. It was a great day. We had special tickets. The day started with a bus ride out to a big ranch. There we had free beer, a corn roast, and listened to, and watched, the Family Brown playing all afternoon. They were spectacular. The bus then took us to Landsdowne Park where we had seats with a table and beer served. From there we watched and enjoyed a great set by Stafford. Cow Patty was a hit at the time. The Kenny came on with all of his catalogue. Very special night.
We only had Wildwoid Flower down here, and y'all had Coke? I'm not making light of drugs, but I couldn't help myself. My cousins live in Calgary, it's a beautiful city!
Another classic comic country artist to check out is Roger Miller. Some of his songs include Dang Me, Kansas City Star, You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd, Chug-A-Lug, and many more. He also has some beautiful heartfelt melodies.
Roger Miller also wrote the music and lyrics for Big River: the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (a Broadway show for which he won a Tony), and it has some incredibly heartfelt songs like River in the Rain, Worlds Apart, and Leavin' ain't the Only Way To Go, as well as a couple of hilarious ones, like the Royal Nonesuch.
Oh wow! So glad you did my song! Thank you! Take a trip ad never leave the farm… next thing you know you’re just wandering around behind the little animals! Net song should. E spiders and snakes.
when in the Navy, the big ropes were made out of Hemp. I was in a class where the instructor said if the ship was to sink and were stuck on a desert island, you could smoke some of the rope.
Nobody has mentioned "Sixteen Little Red Noses and a Horse That Sweats," during which Jim plays a fabulous blues banjo! He has also recorded a version of "Mr. Bojangles" that will bring a tear to the eye. Jim Stafford covers everything from humor to pathos. He once said that he was raised as a Frisbeeterian. "We believe that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and you can't get it down." Love your reactions!
Actually I had forgotten this song! Thanks for bringing back all those great memories that were attached to it 😅 Y'all should react to Mac Davis "Hard to be Humble". The next time you're looking for a comedy song. It was a huge hit when it came out and never gets old (Jay in particular should love it!)
Corn cob pipe is what he said!! Jim Stafford is a hoot and he had several hits. Spiders and Snakes was one of my favorites. As for Ray Stevens he has so many and one of my favorites of his is "The Streak". We had fun with our music back in the day!
Jim Stafford is hilarious and he had his own show in Branson. Swamp Witch is a spooky story and many of his other songs are riffs that take a song in. Completely different directions like Cow Patty and My Girl Bill. Roger Miller is another great singer of funny stories but he also had some straight songs as well.
There's another by Jim Stafford titled "Spider and Snakes" and there's also another by Jerry Reed titled "When You're Hot You're Hot" and there's a couple by Ray Stevens, you might like titled "The Streak" and "Gitarzan". This song really brings back some good memories. Thanks so much for this reaction!
Wildwood Flower is an old song probably dating back hundreds of years with some of the lyrics changing. The Carter Family recorded and released the most popular version in 1928. They were the first country or hillbilly group, consisting of AP Carter, Sarah his wife and her cousin Maybelle who was married to AP ‘s brother Ezra. Her youngest daughter June was Johnny Cash’s second wife.
I'm just glad the squad is getting into these old songs. I'm hoping they will eventually go even farther back to see the evolution of all the genres we have today. Most genres today have common roots at some point in the past. In this case.... yes the wildwood week lyrics are Jims. However the tune being played is the classic wildwood flower (actually the tune itself goes way way back I think before the wildwood flower lyrics). Here is a recording well worth listening two of Mother Maybelle Carter. and the Carter family. I'm not sure but that might be Johnny Cash wife to be June Carter on the autoharp. ua-cam.com/video/ewnfWoSQz3o/v-deo.html
@@Hobodeluxe960 True, but the opening chords to Jim's song are from the old carter song. oldtimers would expect the old song about a girl with an unfaithful lover, and suddenly find themselves hearing something else entirely.
The Carters are country royalty, present from before the Opry. Ma Carter co-invented the bum-chick bum-chick style of guitar playing (I forget the technical title) that so many country artists, including her son-in-law Johnny Cash, used.
I grew up listening to this along with so many other classics from the 60's and 70's. My oldest brother God rest his soul had a stack of 45 records with this among them. We just sat there for hours and just rocked it out and laughed our assses off. It was just a great time to grow up. PEACE TO YOU ALL!!!!!
The tune this song was based on, "Wildwood Flower", was a VERY popular song by the "Carter Family"; (the same family of June Carter, who married Johnny Cash). Maybelle Carter (in her elder years known as "Mother Maybelle") is credited with popularizing the "Carter Scratch"; a manner of playing the guitar. See the black and white version of "Wildwood Flower" for a good example and closeup. In her much elder years, Maybelle also went on Johnny Cash's TV show to perform a variation on the song, called "Pick the Wildwood Flower"
The music is the old classic "Wildwood Flower" which Jim put "Wildwood Weed" lyrics over. He's got several novelty song hits in his catalog. Jim was successful in the '70s and even had a six week run with his own variety show on TV. In addition to being a great guitarist, he played fiddle, banjo, piano, organ and harmonica. Jim still performs in Branson, Missouri.
If you liked this you might like “Long Haired Country Boy” by Charlie Daniels. No fiddle, but it’s a great song. Jim Stafford has “Spiders & Snakes” and “My Girl Bill” that hit the charts!!
@@richardbertrand3217 , that doesn’t make sense to me. Why should they invite controversy? This is a fun reaction channel, not a political one. And UA-camrs get enough trolling comments. No need to be perceived as a bigot by accident. I happen to love that Charlie Daniels song, but wouldn’t broadcast something I know is going to offend.
Jim's "Spiders And Snakes" became a big hit on the radio and the guy eventually got his own TV variety show for awhile (seems like everyone famous had a variety show at some time or another. I honestly didn't hear this song until I found it on a download site decades later.
Jim Stafford plays a bit of "Cow Patti" in a scene in Clint Eastwood's "Any Which Way You Can". Some of his better songs not already mentioned here is "Cows With Guns", "Marie Lavoe", and the most especially comical "Under the Scotsman's Kilt". Spiders and Snakes, Swamp Witch, and Wildwood Weed are probably his most well known tunes--and you can't go wrong listening to any of them. As far as Ray Stevens goes, I'd highly recommend "The Streak" and "Gitarzan" as must reactions.
Jim Stafford is a great guitar player and he's half singer and half comedian in concert. Saw him, The James Gang, and The Beach Boys all in one night's concert for $3. There was a streaker on stage that night during The Beach Boys. If you want to become more familiar with streakers, react to Ray Steven's song "The Streak". Yes, that was another thing going on in the 70's as Amber likes to point out.
Great singer song writer and comedian and fantastic guitar player always loved Spiders and snakes the most he's an actor too had his own variety show for awhile
I bought this 45 record back in the day. It's a great memory and I have to say, though I never went up the windmill, I did take a few trips from our North Dakota farm and never left!
Wildwood Weed, Hotrod Lincoln, Monster Mash, The Streak!, even Mama Told Me Not To Come, and so many more!. The early 70's also had a great sense of humor!
Some Ray Stevens suggestions:"The Streak"(Streaking was a fairly popular fad in the 1970s,running naked real fast in front of groups of people),"Shriners' Convention","It's Me Again,Margaret","Santa Claus Is Watching You",and two serious songs by Ray Stevens:"Everything's Beautiful" and "Turn Your Radio On".
I grew up on Ray Stevens... great suggestions. One that might be fun around halloween is Sittin' Up With The Dead. It's a bit later but funny and a bit creepy at the same time.
I've been a fan of Jim Stafford since I was a kid. This song along with Real Good Time, Spiders and Snakes, Cow Patty, Sixteen Little Red Noses and a Horse That Sweats, and too many others to list here are some of my all-time favorites. A few years ago, I got to see him perform at his theater in Branson. If you're ever up that way, you should definitely catch his show. He has a lot of great funny songs, but he is also an excellent guitarist on par with Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Eddie Van Halen... whatever guitarist you can name, he can hold his own with them. BTW, it was a corn cob pipe they put it in to smoke it.
What's so funny is I was about 13 when the song came out and I loved it but didn't know what is was really about. Now im a wild wood weed girl myself lol
I had almost forgotten about this one. Jim Stafford is one heck of a funny guy! Yes, we all smoked the "Wildwood Weed" back in the 70's. In fact, I had my fist joint before I had my fist cigarette LOL. What a great memory and your reactions are right on!
Y’all need to listen to “spiders and snakes” and “swamp witch” by Jim Stafford too. He’s a great singer/songwriter known almost exclusively for comedy songs. Also, Jerry Reed doing “Amos Moses” is another great comedy song. Jerry Reed is also considered one of the best and most versatile guitarists ever. I used to work for a local favorite band (Amarilla in Greenwood, SC) and we opened for Jerry Reed there in a medium venue (~10,000 people) and were able to spend some time backstage talking with him and his band. He was a great person and just as hilarious in backstage as on stage.
Ray Stevens has a bunch of comedy songs; biggest hits being “The Streak” and “Guitarzan”. Bobby Bare has a few also; “Numbers”, “The Winner” and “Marie Laveau” to name three. Also check out Roy Clark “Thank God & Greyhound”; although not evident in this song, he was one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Someone mentioned “Malagueña” by Jim Stanford, but Roy Clark’s versions are incredible!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Jim Stafford was a real cutie and did some great story telling with his humorous songs. He had a TV show for a while and my mother and I would laugh our butts off. He was married for a short time to Bobby Gentry who was also a story teller through her songs like Ode to Billy Joe and Fancy. Love hearing these old songs again so thank you.
Jay and Amber, this song was quite the laugh. I can think of one that stands up to it and that would be *Charlie Daniels' song Uneasy Rider.* Well ya know Charlie is a very good story teller plus some of the other songs in his catalogue like *The Legend Of Wooely Swamp.* He keeps em' interesting *Love ❤️ Peace ✌️ and Happiness 😃 Y'all !!!*
Loved the reaction. This has always been one of the songs that always makes me laugh and feel better. Thanks a lot for doing this one. Another great singer/storyteller in this vein is C W McCall. His song Convoy started the CB craze in the Mid-70's and influenced American culture greatly, for a while anyway. He has many good story songs, one of my other favorites is Wolf Creek Pass.
My dad had this on a 45rmp record, and for YEARS I had no idea what the "Wildwood Weed" really was. But when I got older (about 14yrs old) and played this one, one day for laughs, realizing WHAT he was talking about for the 1st time made me love the song even more. I can still see my dad (almost 40 years later) coming home from work catching me "playing with his stereo" and being upset UNTIL I explained to him that I now actually "got" the song.
"Existential Blues" by T-Bone Stankus is the most bizzare, clever, hip, & funny storytelling song i've ever heard (from 1985, it was often featured on the Dr. Demento radio show)
Spiders and Snakes! BTW: He and Bobbie Gentry were married way back then for a short while. I worked for a Rental Car Company years ago and rented him a car. He was nice and funny!!!
Jim Stafford tells the story so well. Enjoyed your reactions, too. Are you ready for some snacks... try this tune... Junk Food Junkie Song by Larry Groce
I'm so glad you enjoyed Wild Wood Weed. The song that is. Spiders and Snakes, Cow Patti, My Girl Bill, and Swamp Witch were his biggest hits, but he had so many other great songs. He's an excellent guitar player as well. Ray Stevens' It's Me Again, Margaret; The Streak, and Sitting Up With the Dead are all hilarious. Jerry Clower's Coon Hunting Story is a country classic. Hoyt Axton is a great country storyteller. Della and the Dealer and Rusty Old Halo are two of his best. I would love to see you all react to Rhiannon Giddens live version of Ruby. She plays one awesome banjo as well as having a wonderful voice.
@waltnorth8359 ua-cam.com/video/-UUvuW0NbLQ/v-deo.html. No. Although Roy Clark does a fantastic version. The one I'm thinking of combines Malenguela, comedy and Classical Gas all while wearing suit that defies description 😄
I graduated HS in '75 ... Raised in the back-wood mountains of Virginia ... and that's EXACTLY what it was like... Slow, easy ... floating along at peace with the world ... and all those cute little weeds !
Great entertainer! I only saw him in person once, many years ago, but I still remember it! He's known for his comedic songs, but he is also a GREAT guitarist!
I had the great pleasure and honor to work and play with Jim off and on for years, and I LOVED watching people 'discover' his music. He's a funny, funny man and a consummate, genius guitarist.
I swear the funniest part of the whole song is after he says his brother claimed he flew up in the windmill, he says he had to fly up and get him down.
💖💖💖 His songs are GREAT! I love Jim Stafford. "Your Bull Dog Drinks Champagne", "Spiders and Snakes", "My Girl Bill", "None Of Us Are Here" and he does a great version of "Mr. Bojangles/Visit With An Old Friend".
Great reaction, y’all! Just wanted to tell you that Ray Stevens’ The Streak, Gitarzan and Ahab the Arab are hilarious! Also, his songs Misty and Everything is Beautiful aren’t funny but really lovely!! Y’all should check them out.
I have never heard of Jim Stafford before, much less this song. Saw it was gonna be funny. Was in the mood for funny. Sure as hell didn't expect THAT! That was great. looking forward to hearing more with y'all.
Ray Steven's "The Streak" is a funny song about a crazy 70's fad called 'streaking'. Streaking is when people would get naked and run through a public place. People streaked onto football fields, around high schools, all kinds of places. I won't say that I ever did it, but I won't say that I didn't, especially across an interstate highway...😊
Jim Stafford is such a great songwriter and he’s also a hell of a guitar player. He doesn’t get as much respect as he probably deserves. I recommend checking out the song, swamp, witch, and spiders and snakes.
Spiders and Snakes, Swamp Witch, Cow Patty, My Girl Bill, and on top of it all, he can absolutely shred on a guitar
love spiders and snakes, probably my intro to Jim Stafford.
Microbial music head of its time
Spiders and snakes, and My Girl Bill have to be next. Both great songs with humor😂

Cow Patty! Great song!
Jim Stafford is also a virtuoso on the guitar. He'll make your jaw drop.
He's a very talented individual. A great guitar player. Funny songwriter and story teller. I think he had a TV show or specials in the 70s.

@@gwenking7700 you should check out Roy Clark’s version(s) of Malagueña; the best I’ve seen, by far!
Spiders and Snakes is one of his best!
Can't believe it still remember all the words! ❤😂
But not the revised Uneasy Rider, that one stinks.
@@mikemaricle9941 I totally agree with you. The revised Uneasy Rider 88' did not live up to the original's storyline.
There's things out there in the middle of them woods make a strong man die from fright.
Hadn't heard this song in a VERY long minute! Thanks for the memories and the smiles!
Try Mac Davis, "Lord, It's Hard to be Humble."
“Saturday morning confusion “ by Bobby Russell is a must for great funny storytelling
"Existential Blues" by T-Bone Stankus is the most bizzare, clever, hip, & funny storytelling song i've ever heard (from 1985, it was often featured on the Dr. Demento radio show)
Hallelujah! Someone reacted to this song. I had meant to suggest it but someone beat me to it and I am glad.
You guys would like John Denver’s “Grandmas Feather Bed”!
Spiders and Snakes! BTW: He and Bobbie Gentry were married way back then for a short while. I worked for a Rental Car Company years ago and rented him a car. He was nice and funny!!!
So great to be a teen in the 70’s😎
Love you 2 💛
Jim Stafford tells the story so well. Enjoyed your reactions, too. Are you ready for some snacks... try this tune...
Junk Food Junkie
Song by Larry Groce
As soon as I saw this song, I knew you were going to love it. It is such a funny song. Love you guys!
If you want to see just how amazing a guitar player he is check out his live performances at Branson. Especially Malenguela
Are you thinking of Roy Clarke?
@waltnorth8359 ua-cam.com/video/-UUvuW0NbLQ/v-deo.html. No. Although Roy Clark does a fantastic version. The one I'm thinking of combines Malenguela, comedy and Classical Gas all while wearing suit that defies description 😄
@@lynneblacketer6479 Thank You.
I graduated HS in '75 ... Raised in the back-wood mountains of Virginia ... and that's EXACTLY what it was like... Slow, easy ... floating along at peace with the world ... and all those cute little weeds !
Try the Charlie Daniels Band doing Uneasy Rider - This is a great story song
OMG. Uneasy Rider is hilarious!
This is so hilarious i love this can't hear it enough lol. Awesome reaction.
Sittin there...on that sack of seeds :-))
Great entertainer! I only saw him in person once, many years ago, but I still remember it! He's known for his comedic songs, but he is also a GREAT guitarist!
You must do Swamp Witch! Another great story song with a real twist at the end. It’s very much a Halloween song.
I had the great pleasure and honor to work and play with Jim off and on for years, and I LOVED watching people 'discover' his music. He's a funny, funny man and a consummate, genius guitarist.
The streak by Ray Steven’s is a good one
J and Amber, it might help to research the "streaking" fad of the 70's. It'll help you understand the song more.
I swear the funniest part of the whole song is after he says his brother claimed he flew up in the windmill, he says he had to fly up and get him down.
Jim Stafford did a duet with Dolly Parton live I don’t like spiders and snakes! That’s the one you should watch
Yes that is great.. from his TV show..
There’s one from the 70’s: Larry Groce singing “Junk Food Junkie”. Funny how it’s still relevant today, too!
I love his Mr Bojangles/Visiting with an old friend medley. My favorite Jim Stafford songs are Flight 313 and None of Us Are Here.
@@tfodthogtmfof7644 I have always loved "Mr. Bojangles" and "None Of Us Are Here". The first makes me cry and the second makes me wonder.
Old man here, the music in the background is from an old country tune WILDWOOD FLOWER. 🙂
Jay & Amber, you''ll love his "Spiders And Snakes"!!!
Jim Stanford also hosted a variety show in the 70’s
Great reaction, y’all! Just wanted to tell you that Ray Stevens’ The Streak, Gitarzan and Ahab the Arab are hilarious! Also, his songs Misty and Everything is Beautiful aren’t funny but really lovely!! Y’all should check them out.
Don't forget Shriners Convention, that is a classic
I have never heard of Jim Stafford before, much less this song. Saw it was gonna be funny. Was in the mood for funny. Sure as hell didn't expect THAT! That was great. looking forward to hearing more with y'all.
Wildwood Flower is indeed a famous country song. Chet Atkins made it famous.
I always heard it by Mother Maybelle Carter.
We found “wildweed” when we were kids. We picked it, dried it on my neighbour’s roast that was cooking in the oven. 🤣
Spider's and Snakes
Ray Steven's "The Streak" is a funny song about a crazy 70's fad called 'streaking'. Streaking is when people would get naked and run through a public place. People streaked onto football fields, around high schools, all kinds of places. I won't say that I ever did it, but I won't say that I didn't, especially across an interstate highway...😊
''16 Little Red Noses And A Horse That Sweats'''' .. That is a Jim Stafford song you should hear by force ,whether you want to or not ..
Jim Stafford is such a great songwriter and he’s also a hell of a guitar player. He doesn’t get as much respect as he probably deserves. I recommend checking out the song, swamp, witch, and spiders and snakes.
Your reaction was priceless! I love to watch people the first time they hear this song.
