This is something that I've heard and I'd like to know if it's true or not seeing as how you attended a sporting event with enthusiastic cheering. Are sports fans in Japan far more reserved at sporting events in terms of being loud and celebrating a victory? Or is that just another myth?
Welcome to Detroit Michigan, Tommy. I’m glad he was able to experience many of Detroit and Michigan specialties like better maid, mackinaw fudge and apple cider. Y’all had great seats at the Red wings game. Was he able to Comerica park and Ford field.
America is crying for Tommy are the best words to describe everything. I'm overjoyed he got to experience all of this especially with all of your family. It warms my heart and Tommy's stomach ❤
American hug-culture is pretty well-known in Japan; my in-laws had a mix of trepidation and excitement the first time I went over to Japan that I might just hug them immediately. Of course I knew Japanese culture so I didn't, but some part of me thinks they were kind of hoping I would. I think I did when we were leaving Japan on that trip, and have since then.
@@captain_britain Hahaha... my nieces will, but they're both 25 and under and I've known them since they were tiny. My sister-in-law won't initiate, but she will go with the flow. I don't really do bro-hugs with BiL and my wife's dad. Might be a bridge too far. They're cool, though. Dad always tries giving me strange unmarked alcohols at some point in the trip (he spent many years as a tour guide, so picked up lots of local liquors), and BiL is a good guy though he works a lot.😁
As a Michigander, THANK YOU for showing Detroit in it's brightest light. Everyone associates Detroit with crime/danger, and I'm sure that keeps a lot of tourists away. It's really a fun town and state and you won't find a better orchard south of the Ohio border.

Hello from Sweden! I must say that Tommys reactions to everything seemed so pure. He seems to be a really nice person and you both seem to be a really sweet couple :) I would love to visit both USA and Japan sometime in the future and both have been on my to-visit-wishlist for a long time. My GF has lived in Japan a few years ago and she loved it there and she speaks japanese aswell but she is swedish. Can't wait until the day i can afford to travel to Japan and USA :)
Hey Alyssa, maybe it’s just me, and that’s ok if it is, but Tommie seemed the most authentically and openly Japanese in this video than any other. I think maybe the excitement of being in America, with you just turned him back into a little boy that couldn’t hold his excitement in at all. It made me happy. ❤
There's a story behind Detroit's Coney dogs (for those who don't know): Despite the name Coney dog being named after Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY, the Coney dog originates from the Midwest. But why? In the early 1900s, many Greeks came to the US through Ellis Island to escape the Balkan Wars. Before moving to the Midwest, they stopped at Coney Island and had Nathan's world-famous hot dogs. They were so impressed that they wanted to spread it wherever they went and came up with their own recipes. In Detroit, there's a tense rivalry between American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island right next door on which one has the better Coney dog. In fact, Lafayette Coney Island was actually founded by the BROTHER of the founder of American Coney Island! Like how Mister Donut became a thing because its founder Harry Winokur chose to no longer work with his brother-in-law, William Rosenberg the founder of Dunkin' Donuts.
Plus there are A LOT of other Coney Island type restaurants throughout the metro Detroit area. Many of them also serve Greek and/or Arabic food, in addition to broader "American" food items and the expected hotdogs with extra toppings.
Being a Michigander and familiar with all the places you visited, this video made me happy. It’s great you were able to share Michigan with your husband. :)

From the Michigan welcome basket to Frankenmuth, to Campus Martius Park to Red Wings game to apple and pumpkin pie, it was so wholesome. I am excited for his adventures to continue in the summer. You two are adorable together.
This brought back happy memories except I was the 19 year old American that moved to Japan. I was amazingly fascinated, especially when I had to learn to drive the Japanese roads!😊
I was working in Hokkaido and I had to return to the US after the job finished. My Japanese girlfriend Yumiko and I kissed, then I boarded my plane back to the States. Hardest heartbreak ever! That was over 40 years ago. I've been married twice but still miss the love I lost, Yumiko and amazing Japan!

This was my first time seeing a video of you and your husband together! He seems like such a kind and thoughtful person, it was heart warming seeing his reactions and happiness being there with everyone. I hope Tommy can visit again and make more great memories with you all!
There are many videos of people visiting Japan and seeing everything for the first time, but it’s very rare to see it the other way around! Was so excited for him to see everything! Love the videos, enjoy your time back stateside
I love these little glimpses of your life and how optimistic you are in these videos. I am in awe at your intellect and social compatibility in the world. Cheers friend!
"Welcome to Detroit! You're running, why are you running?!" The transition between those two clips in the intro is the perfect way to describe what the typical person thinks when they hear Detroit 💀😂 I've had the opportunity to go to Detroit back in Spring Break 2019 for a robotics world championship and honestly had a blast! Hot dogs and pizza are two things Detroit does right. The crust of a Detroit-style pizza is absolutely perfect, especially a corner piece! Though I'm sure through this Detroit visit, Tommy's realizing he's been taking Japanese trains for granted when noticing how American cities are compared to Japanese ones. And love the fact even your father knows Japanese!
As a person who lives in Livonia, I think you did a great job planning Michigan activities. Hope he comes back in the summer to visit the Great Lakes, maybe go tubing down the Au Sable, visit the sand dunes, watch fireworks (if around 4th of July), visit Mackinac, and take him to one of the "mystery spots". There's one in Irish Hills but there are a couple others too. It was so great to see him light up with each new experience.
Living in Ann Arbor, I'd say visiting the university that's on his Hoodie would be a must to see what US colleges are like (or at least one of the biggest ones) lol. There's no football games going on in the summer but all of the Japanese visitors I meet usually have a blast when I take them to a game at the Big House and tailgating!
Exactly; you can't visit Michigan without going to the world famous "mystery spot" up near Mackinaw. I would also add Whitefish Point to that list of Upper Peninsula sightseeing; my family spent many summers in northern Michigan visiting Whitefish Point, and always had a beautiful time.
I was so excited for this video as a Michigander!! Most of the time when influencers come to America, they go to the big cities or come from the big cities so it's nice to be like, "Oh! I know exactly where they are" Thank you for making this video, Anming
@@OrientalPearl You definitely did lol I loved taking him to Coney Island. It puts in perspective how silly it can be for visitors to any contry to freak out about things that are otherwise normal (but it was super cute. I'm glad you both had fun!)
It's so much fun seeing Tommy's mind get blown every other second and being like a kid in a toystore on Christmas. Michigan looks lovely and that pumpkinpie looks sooo good! Happy Hollidays from Sweden!
I admire them both they are amazing! I especially her accomplishments in life, studying foreign languages,, great marriage and her over all love for life🎉
Tommy's excitement of everything being new and different reminds of my numerous tours in Japan (77-78 Okinawa, 82-83, 83-84, 93, 95 and 96-2000 Iwakuni). I had a great time in Japan. I was lucky in that my hobby was long distance running and I had a Japanese friend who shared the same hobby. I and my other running (Marine) friends ran many Japanese running races. Good times. Hope to go back some day for a visit.
OMG....this video had me smiling from ear to ear...you two are soooooo meant for each other!!! Tommy looked so sad to leave, I was sad for him, but I think he really enjoyed himself while in America. I love how you wrap your arm around his neck, he is "your man for life!", and it shows! It's nice that your stepfather knows Japanese also, it makes Tommy feel so much more comfortable. I absolutely adore your videos, I wish you so much joy in your life, you deserve it! 💯❤❤❤
I didnt realize how much I missed the Detroit area since joining the military. this video really brought me back, seeing his reactions made me realize I've failed to appreciate my hometown when I was a kid. Back then I could only think of leaving, now I feel a longing to return with little or any opportunity to go back. Detroit and Michigan in general has a lot to offer that I took for granted. Thank you both for this video showing the awsome things I remember from my childhood.
You took him to all the best places, exactly where I’d take a foreigner!! Yates is a 10/10 in the fall and Frankenmuth makes me SO excited for Christmas!!!
This was so wholesome!! I was so excited for Tommy! It was like seeing a kid in a candy store falling in love with everything he sees. This is awesome. I love your videos
Man this video was so heartwarming. It's awesome that he had an amazing time in America and even wants to visit again in the Summer! Felt super sad when you were seeing him off at the aiport, since I can totally relate doing that with my gf.
What a trip, in many ways!!!!! Liked seeing our country thru Tommy’s eyes. Forget what a land of abundance we are. Lots of things are supersized (for better or worse) and I take it for granted. Subbed to your channel after seeing the first video, enjoy it immensely. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
It's cool to hear you're from the Detroit area. I grew up in Royal Oak myself! It's awesome that your husband's first experience of America was Detroit, and his reactions to everything were so heartwarming. Bringing him to Michigan in the summertime should be an amazing experience, especially if you could bring him up north. Anywho, I just recently discovered your videos and I love your channel. Keep it up! 💜
Excellent video. I just subscibed to you yesterday and this vid came up onthe vid list. OMG you are from the general atea where i live! Born Detroiter been in the burbs over 30 years now. And loved the excitement and enthusiam your husband had for everyting., even getting really excited at the Red Wings game. Been kn youtube for years and i would say one of the top ten videos Ive ever seen. Says something about a summer video. Gonna check that out next.
Pearl and Tommy, I swear I was just thinking about y'all two earlier today, especially this specific video. I'm so happy for you two. 👫👩❤️👨 🇺🇸♥️🇯🇵 Thank-you for publishing this video, Pearl. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Edit: I just had this thought: Tommy is now American because he's now married to you, Pearl! 🎉
It is so lovely to see this cross cultural experience ... the excitement, the confusion, they joy of Christmas. You two make a lovely couple. Great video!
Man what a wholesome video. watched it to the end! watching your Husband is so entertaining. you could genuinely see the amazement in his eyes at every turn. Loved watching him walk around the house in disbelief. keep up the good work and thank you for showing Michigan in such a great light and humor.... (pot hole comment had me on floor with scooter)
I relate to Tommy a fair bit, visited Illinois and Wisconsin to see some friends a few years ago and it was the second time I'd visited the US since I visited Cali as a child and the only time outside of Europe since before I was a teen, and I had the same excitement, even as a Brit it was a culture shock.
Its beautiful that in life two people can have such great experiences, that many other people will never get the chance to experience. Im American and recently moved to Japan, its really interesting to see things from a different cultural perspective. These are definitely life long memories and this video has so much happiness.
As a fellow Michigander this makes my heart warm (As a UMich student I feel even happier seeing Tommy with the jersey hahaha) ❤ Happy holidays to you all!
I'm crying cause this is exactly how my aunt, my cousin, and her husband reacted when they visited us in Bay Area, California from Japan! We took them to their first Warriors game, Giants game, Sharks game, 49er game, their first In-n-Out Burger, first legit Mexican food, first legit BBQ in Santa Cruz, first jazz band concert in San Jose, and the obvious iconic tourist places to visit (Facebook, Google, Apple, Golden Gate, Ghirardelli). It was so fun seeing their eyes sparkle at every place we went and all the people we met along the way that were able to make their first visit to America so much more memorable! I'm so happy to see Tommy got the same experience and you can totally see how happy he was!
Never saw tommy in ur videos,, got to say seeing him so excited to be in America and meet ur family, probably one of the best foreigner visits another country videos ive seen 👍
Finally, Tommy visit the US.. I've been waiting to see this and love his facial expressions taking it all in! He really enjoyed his visit, you can tell he was sad to leave especially with you staying! I'm glad he experienced our Thanksgiving, a very American tradition, especially with your family!!! Can't wait for your next video! I thought I had the notification bell on, but it was not on, now it is!!!
After my first tour to Japan on 2015, I fell in love with the people, the culture, the cuisine, the land. Been back for two month long tours since and I've really enjoyed learning from the expat community on UA-cam over the years. Been following your videos for a long time, but never realized you're a fellow Michigander! How wonderful to see you two enjoy family time over Thanksgiving and explore Detroit and Frankenmuth together. It put a big smile on my face to see Tommy wolfing down a coney in a U of M hoodie and washing it down with a Vernor's. Doesn't get much more Michigan than that!
First off, it's absolutely NUTS you're taking time to respond to all these comments! That's a LOT of work. Don't burn yourself out! Second, Detroit is my hometown, too :) - Living here currently, making plans myself to have an extended stay in Japan. It's so fascinating to see your husband being amazed by how things work here in America. You took him to some of the nicer spots. Sadly, he didn't get to see the riverwalk, which is SOOOO nice in the summer. Yet, Downtown is beautiful during Christmas. You and your husband warm my heart and soul. You deserve all the success you have and more. I wish I'd bumbed into you when you were here. I have so many questions. God Bless you! And merry christmas!
I can relate to the temperature adjustment. I grew up in the TX Gulf Coast. Temperatures rarely even got down to freezing, and when they did for those 1-2 times a year, it was just for a few hours. When my husband brought me to visit his family in Grand Rapids in Jan, I thought it was absurdly cold despite it only being in the upper 30's. His relatives laughed at me. For our next visit we were able to visit in summer, so we could go to the county fair. I thought temps in the upper 70's low 80's were paradise while those same relatives were suffering. I just looked up the high at home on my phone and they couldn't believe that our upper 90's low 100's was our normal.
From SE Michigan. So wonderful that your husband enjoyed his time here. Love the Michigan adventure that you took him on. (Especially Yates) I can't wait to see the videos of when he returns
I love this video. I live in Howell Michigan. Having a blended family, my kids are half white half Asian I can relate so much with this video and my life story moving from the Philippines to the US. Thanks for sharing! Hope I can learn how to vlog here in Michigan. I was so inspired with all your pretty cool and amazing videos and your life story. Godbless
Tommy seemed genuinely excited to see the place where you were born and raised. Too bad he only had a short visit, but you definitely packed a lot into it. When will you return to Japan? I'm looking forward to your next video. As I've said before...Keep them coming. ❤
What a lovely video. I hope he enjoyed himself - I imagine there was plenty of culture shock but he seemed to handle it all so well! Sad he had to leave you, though! I hope you’re doing well. ❤ Sending love from KY 😊
Great video! This was the video that my heart needed as my Dad passed away 2 days ago. Vernors, Coney Dogs, Frankenmuth, Yates Cider Mill, Faygo, Bronner's, Sanders, Better Made, Red Wings game, Cherry Jam (Traverse City Cherries?) Ren Cen, The Christmas Tree at Campus Martius. So many great things about this area all in one video. All those things my Dad loved and would talk about to his friends in Florida. Thank you for sharing and giving my day a boost. ~Be Blessed
Awesome vid. It reminds me of Yoel and Mari's videos where her Cuban husband see's parts of America for the first time. Culture shock videos are some of the best!
It's so much fun seeing everything through Tommy's eyes! He's like a child discovering things and loving all of it! I'm so glad he got to go there and you were together. (from Sandi)
I loved every minute of this video. Tommy's open mindedness, was incredible. He was so eager to explore everything and experience and soak in all of American and Michigan culture. I think he has fallen in love with the USA. Also, I remember that Coney Island diner was featured in an Anthony Bourdain cultural show several years back. It was pretty moving at the end when Tommy was flying back. I'd like to see him come back to the States very soon.
@@OrientalPearl Yes, it was from his Detroit episode from around 2013 or 2014. It was a really interesting episode. I think I have the right diner. There are probably a few Coney hot dog places there I'm sure. I think his show filmed at the Duly's diner which is like 90 years old.
Me : Being from Michigan watching this 😃😃😃😃😃 Also Me : The weather here is crazy cold right now but I'm happy to see you both had a good time while visiting ☺️☺️☺️☺️
My heart broke when he had to leave without you! My dad worked in other countries growing up and I remember the good byes and tears between my parents. Such a sacrifice when he did leave for work. He took us to live In Malaysia but other places were more short term (under 6months) but I would of loved to experience the world more. It is my heart to always embrace Asians. I have made a decision to learn some Chinese so when I visit places I can at least greet others in their language and hopefully learn more after that. Our family has a love for the owners of a Chinese restaurant in our town and have down some seafood business with them and it really opened the door to knowing them more personally. Such beautiful people just like you and yours! ❤

I love these little glimpses of your life and how optimistic you are in these videos. I am in awe at your intellect and social compatibility in the world. Cheers friend!
Thank you. I love to put positive stuff out there.

Cuba till we die traitor
As a person who lives in Livonia, I think you did a great job planning Michigan activities. Hope he comes back in the summer to visit the Great Lakes, maybe go tubing down the Au Sable, visit the sand dunes, watch fireworks (if around 4th of July), visit Mackinac, and take him to one of the "mystery spots". There's one in Irish Hills but there are a couple others too. It was so great to see him light up with each new experience.
LOLOL that is a LOT. He needs to stay for a few years maybe
Livonia sounds like the name of a made up country in Eastern Europe.
I was so excited for this video as a Michigander!! Most of the time when influencers come to America, they go to the big cities or come from the big cities so it's nice to be like, "Oh! I know exactly where they are" Thank you for making this video, Anming
Thanks Rebecca. I wanted to give Tommy the real authentic American experience.
@@OrientalPearl You definitely did lol I loved taking him to Coney Island. It puts in perspective how silly it can be for visitors to any contry to freak out about things that are otherwise normal (but it was super cute. I'm glad you both had fun!)
Very authentic American experience!! Hi from Wisconsin
Tommy's enthusiasm throughout the video was so great! He was so excited, it was adorable!
I know right. He was so cute!
It's so much fun seeing Tommy's mind get blown every other second and being like a kid in a toystore on Christmas. Michigan looks lovely and that pumpkinpie looks sooo good! Happy Hollidays from Sweden!
Sending love to Sweden from Michigan.
@@OrientalPearl I’m from MI too!
Tommy looks like he had a great time in Michigan! Thank you for sharing this experience with us!
Thanks for watching. He had a great time.
The noises Tony makes when excited are so cute. ☺️🥰
I know right. He’s adorable.
I’m so glad that this video brought you joy!
This is the most wholesome thing I’ve seen all week. I loved how happy he was. It really made me happy too. This video was exceptional!
You took him to all the best places, exactly where I’d take a foreigner!! Yates is a 10/10 in the fall and Frankenmuth makes me SO excited for Christmas!!!
Thanks Owen. That’s so cool that you’ve been to those places too.
He is so cute and so excited. Adorable
This was so wholesome!! I was so excited for Tommy! It was like seeing a kid in a candy store falling in love with everything he sees. This is awesome. I love your videos
A lot of people said that. It’s so true!
I love her because she is so wholesome! She also surrounds herself I find with wholesome people! Such a blessing they are !
I'm glad UA-cam recommended this video to me. I'm so glad to see visitors enjoy America, especially during the holidays!
Nice couple. I wish you all the best.
Man this video was so heartwarming. It's awesome that he had an amazing time in America and even wants to visit again in the Summer! Felt super sad when you were seeing him off at the aiport, since I can totally relate doing that with my gf.
Thanks Teddy. I tried not to cry when he left.
Thank you for subscribing Betsy. That means a lot to me.
Keep it up! 💜
I’d love to bring him back here in the summer.
I'm from Detroit originally. I live in Clearwater, FL now. I loved this! Thanks.
Wow, you’re enjoying the warm weather now.
You are so lovely with your husband...full of affection and laughter. Really good to see.
I love seeing you two having such a great time! His excitement is adorable!
Thank you Becky. I was so glad he came.
His reactions are so awesome!!! This dude is just living his best life right now hah Have a great holiday guys!!!
Thank you! We had a great time.
As a Detroiter, this is pretty cool, just seeing his amazement is pretty fun to watch
You almost made me cry, I miss Christmas up north, but I lived in the UP.
Awww, I’m moved that this video made such an impact on you.
As a michigander i'd say you took him to all the right spots! looks like he loved it.
Thanks Danny. We got to visit the Henry Ford museum too.
Hi Matthew. That’s a funny coincidence. Thanks for watching and thinking of us.
You’ve always had such a knack and talent for creating good and interesting content, Anming. Thank you for this one.
Thank you Mike. I have lots more ideas for adventures coming up.
Beautiful couple and you can tell he s a friendly, warm, affectionate man
It is so lovely to see this cross cultural experience ... the excitement, the confusion, they joy of Christmas. You two make a lovely couple. Great video!
I really enjoy the overall positive energy of this video. More please!
Thanks David. More positive videos to come.
Such fun vibes, hope you all enjoy and appreciate the time with friends and family!❤

I can not wait to bring my Filipina gf to America(Michigan) She's been wanting to see and experience the winter and snow.
This was so good! Best wishes from Wales🏴 😊
Its beautiful that in life two people can have such great experiences, that many other people will never get the chance to experience. Im American and recently moved to Japan, its really interesting to see things from a different cultural perspective. These are definitely life long memories and this video has so much happiness.
I couldn't stop smiling the entire time I watched this video. Love Tommy!
My goodness! Such expressions of wonder from an inner child. Beautiful
As a fellow Michigander this makes my heart warm (As a UMich student I feel even happier seeing Tommy with the jersey hahaha) ❤ Happy holidays to you all!
He has team spirit!
go blue!
Such an adorable couple! So lovely to see Tommy experiencing Detroit for the first time!
Thanks Rita. I was so excited to show him around.
He’s in a whole bunch. I made a playlist. Watch here: ua-cam.com/play/PL4ZO_46UWWdH3QLQJqCUmsNV7gfrp7wIF.html&si=dovlDm_THKJ6hbjd
Seeing the excitement in Tommy’s eyes as he experiences new things, warms my heart 🤩❤️
Thank you for setting the notification bell Clara. More videos are coming soon.

His reaction is so pure and joyful! Glad you could travel home and be w your family for Xmas. お帰り。
I’m so happy to finally spend Christmas at home.
I love his reaction to a new place. Please we need a series you and him traveling to some place in states.
I loved his reactions. Must have been a culture shock for him lol
But I love how you guys enjoyed your time. 😊
From SE Michigan. So wonderful that your husband enjoyed his time here. Love the Michigan adventure that you took him on. (Especially Yates) I can't wait to see the videos of when he returns
So happy to see you sharing our great state with everyone. I miss my son and family in Tokyo.
Agreed. I'm curious too when she'll return to Japan.
I wish he could have stayed longer.
What a lovely video. I hope he enjoyed himself - I imagine there was plenty of culture shock but he seemed to handle it all so well!
Sad he had to leave you, though! I hope you’re doing well. ❤
Sending love from KY 😊
Sending love to Kentucky from Michigan.
~Be Blessed
I’m sorry for your loss.
@@OrientalPearl Thank you.

Always so jolly and a welcome relief from grim news you have so much joy!
This is absolutely adorable, tommys reactions are everything. Can’t wait to see more travel vlogs ❤
I can’t wait to make more for you.
Awesome vid. It reminds me of Yoel and Mari's videos where her Cuban husband see's parts of America for the first time. Culture shock videos are some of the best!
OMG thank u so much for this amazing video ❤ I was eagerly waiting for this video ♡ Tommy's reaction is precious . I am so happy for both of u 😚😚
Thank you. I’m so glad you could share this moment with us.
awwww Michigan is beautiful. you have such wonderful family members
Wow, I had no idea Anthony Bourdain visited that restaurant too.
@@OrientalPearl Yes, it was from his Detroit episode from around 2013 or 2014. It was a really interesting episode. I think I have the right diner. There are probably a few Coney hot dog places there I'm sure. I think his show filmed at the Duly's diner which is like 90 years old.
Hello, I love watching your videos, it is a great experience and funny that different cultures can get along with each other I love your videos.
Thank you so much Jose! I appreciate your kind words.
Me : Being from Michigan watching this 😃😃😃😃😃
Also Me : The weather here is crazy cold right now but I'm happy to see you both had a good time while visiting ☺️☺️☺️☺️
Amazing seeing Yates cider mill (10 mins from my home) on Oriental Pearl’s channel. Nice tour of Michigan attractions! Way to represent!
