    My buddy and I discovered this method in Feburary 1978, while on a trip to the 60 fathom grounds, off the Jersey coast. The reason it came so easy to us,... because I tied my own flies. So I employed the same hand whip method as in finishing the head of the fly. It was a minor bright moment for us. Whoever discovered that technique deserves the honor. One slight difference is taking the tag end up through the eye
    and forming a loop that you pinch w/ thumb and index firmly against the shank, (the tag lays next to the eye)then putting right hand index and middle finger thru loop and begin the hand whip method. Like this you will have no loss of line(tag). But the method you show results in the very same knot. Amazing, thought I would never find someone who truly knows the proper method to snell a hook. Thanks brother, it would be great to fish with you. God bless.

    Great knot. Clean. It is the best on my trokar circle hooks. My other snell favourite has the tag end come out by the eye. That can cause an issue with slippage. This knot doesn't seem to have that problem. Thanks.

    You did the knot correctly, good technique, and very importantly, unlike many, didn't pull the whole knot straight when the line is already through the eye, but instead pulled first, then pushed the leader through the eye, that does avoid abrasion on the eye which will happen with other Snell ties when the leader is pulled through the eye to tighten everything up - a big mistake.
    In general, I'd say don't tie a Snell on a straight hook eye - either on a turned inwards eye, or turned outwards eye hooks (i.e. Octopus hooks) are suitable for Snell.
    Abrasion is the enemy of any Snell knot, always be careful where the line moves through the eye - that inside of the eye most of the time is rough and abrasive at the bottom shank side, and with the line constantly rubbing against it, will weaken the line - this happens mostly if tying a Snell on a straight up eye hook - to counter this, a small rubber tube can be inserted over the leader line right where it passes through the eye.

    • @zoolookfishing
      @zoolookfishing  5 років тому +3

      Absolutely! This way of making the snell reduces movement on the line and knot...luckily to date I haven't had any issues. Thanks

      That is why I have never put this Snell in water.i use a knot out of a fly tying book to Snell,I want to say it was a whipping knot,it is basically what's used to finish and lock a layer on a fly.i find it just about as fast and once they lock down on that hook you got to scrap em off with a razor blade.they don't go anywhere lol.i can't feel confident in this knot not backing off in the water.it may be strong,it may be a top grade knot,but I don't feel good about it.ipl stick to how I have snelled,I never have had one slip or break at the knot.

    • @richardpeterson3753
      @richardpeterson3753 4 роки тому

      And that's just my preference,so by no means am I saying this is a bad knot.quite the opposite actually.its just my opinion,and I encourage all to explore all options to grow and develop as a fisherman.im simply describing how I have done it,and adding to this idea.what works for me may not work for you,and Visa versa.so explore options.i can count at least a half dozen ways to Snell a hook off the top of my head lol.what ever gets the job done for you,that's your best knot.

    • @richardpeterson3753
      @richardpeterson3753 4 роки тому

      And to be clear the one I said I did not like is what is often called a knotless snell.thats the one I feel will back off in the water and I don't use.my version is similar to what he did,I just execute it differently.

    • @zoolookfishing
      @zoolookfishing  2 роки тому +1

      Hi for general kob fishing I use 0,70mm or 0,75mm diameter mono and yes its the same thickness as the short mono shock leader, that leader is only about 1,2-1,5m long and that is attached to my braid leader. You can go up to 0,9mm if the terrain is harsh and you are targeting big kob with massive baits but generally i like to use 0,75mm

    I've been using that type of snell knot but the only drawback is if you're using a mono leader on braid you'll have to start from scratch, so I use a method that can be done while the leader is attached to the main line by using the plastic stem of a cotton bud ear swab or Q-tip as it's called in the states. I'll try to explain it but it's easier to learn by watching of course. First take your leader thru the eye and pull out a few inches. Hold the short bit of swab stem to the hook shank below the eye then wrap from bottom to top a few times as you said depends on line size then run the tag end thru the cotton bud stem ( I cut mine about an inch and a half or 6 cm more or less) . Then pull the stem down and tighten up the knot by pulling the main line and tag end. Trim it off close if you like as it's not going anywhere or leave a small tag if you want to be extra safe. You're method is great for guys using a snap swivel as you could tie up loads in advance and snap on as needed.

    Hi Xander. Can you use the same knot with wire for shark traces?

  • @koogle612
    @koogle612 9 місяців тому

    The only snell I tie. Even with 200 lb mono its a true 100% line strength knot & most appropriate for eithef turned up eye circle hooks or straight eye circles which I prefer for thatself setting angle that the straight eye encourages. If its a real big fish rig I clip tag below snell & carefully mushroom it with a lighter just for that peace of mind if I hook a monster. 1 video suggests chafing gear through eye for those hooks without welded eyes. Thank you for confirming my approach.

    Not mentioned in the video but see how he makes a loop with the leader (or snoot) following the line's natural memory coming off the spool. He then lays this on top of the circle hook shank so that the curvature of the hook is in line with the curvature of the leader. This will improve the action of the circle hook.
    By the way this is the no nail needed nail knot. I tie the same knot with a small plastic tube wrapping from the bottom and inserting the tag into the tube then pulling out the tube leaving the tag line below the wraps then pulling on the tag and the leader. The method in the video is much better as you don't have to keep up with can little plastic tube.

I lost a couple of fish with another snell knot due to knot failure and switched over to the easy snell knot 10 years ago and haven't had a failure since. The knots didn't slip but broke. I think it was similar to the Japanese snell knot. It could be because I used lighter flourocarbon leaders because I didn't have that problem with heavy mono. First of all that's the wrong type of hook to be snelling in the first place..them are strait eye circles you need octopus circle with bent back eyes of course that hook sits weird and your probably losing fish because of it

      That is not the wrong hook type and I do not lose fish like that. The hook set is better as it turns in far better than a octopus, which is a crap hook unless you want to troll a bait and keep it straight, otherwise useless. Did you know different techniques work around the world?

      The music was very low but no accounting for taste. I like the reggae music and it didn't really affect the quality of the video imo.

    Nice knot, thanks for sharing. With all due respect you talk too much, the first 1:30 was a complete waste of time. Shorten this clip to 1 minute total and you will have a winner
