Indeed. They do make fantastic music and indeed do convey the feeling of something old, something spiritual and so on. But that feeling mostly comes from hollywood and pop culture, people have an expectation of what people during that time looked like and sounded like even though it may be way of the mark what the reality was. Like the idea that everybody was dirty and if they were not wearing biker leathers them they were wearing animal pelts. Which is all wrong. Objectively Wardrunas and Heilungs music has very little to do with REAL dark age and medieval european folk music but instead is a mishmash of influences from native american shamanism to tibetian throat singing. Nytt Land from Siberia are in the same genre and league as Wardruna and Heilung. Because of their origin, they are probably not as well known as the other two, but they definitely are on the level.
@@victorkreig6089 sure, they have different styles of live performance. But if you just listen to the music, that doesn't matter. Musically, they're on the same level and definitely in the same genre.

I've been quietly watching your channel for quite some time. You are really talented and your channel is a gift. And with Wardruna, I've discovered another gem thanks to you, even though I've been really into music for a couple of decades now. I fell down the rabbit hole of Nordic folk music, just like I fell down the rabbit hole of Ren, also thanks to you. I feel I have to thank you now (actually for quite some time) and also, but definitely not only, for your musical content. It's so important, no matter where you live or what language you speak, to talk about mental illness and therapy, and not 'just' people who suffer or therapists, but in general. Because everyone has a psyche and every psyche can become ill. And yet the whole subject is still not discussed as it should be. I'm from Germany (and part of me is 'from' Highgarden) and here in Germany I get easier and better treatment for back pain than for depression, for example. Back pain can also be a symptom of depression, but as it affects the whole body, it is probably just one symptom and not the actual illness that is being treated. And music, as you said, is so important for mental health and treating not just an already damaged psyche, but the psyche in general. It's best to start with musical education as early as possible and also as part of building resilience, and music (lessons) should be included in every kindergarden and every school. Music is a powerful tool and coping skill and in general to stay healthy. (Ren knows.) It is so important that people with a wide (global) reach talk about the whole issue because the more people talk about it and the more known these people are, like Ren, like you, the less it can be suppressed. Thank you so much for your words! On a more personal note, I would love it if you could respond to German acts as well, because there is also a huge rabbit hole of great singers and bands like Herbert Grönemeyer (try "Der Weg" in a live version for example), AnnenMayKantereit (AMK) (I think you might just love them, try their covers like "Tom's Dinner" or "Roxanne"), Nena ("99 Luftballons"), Mine ("Schminke") or Reinhard Mey ("Nein, meine Söhne geb' ich nicht."). Stay strong!
I got to see them in Mesa, Az probably 2 years ago... Amazing show... I had tickets for 3 years waiting to see them (covid delay) , then moved to South Carolina, still had the tickets.. Booked a flight, Flew back to AZ to see them live. No regrets.

It would be very difficult to rank them, but seeing Wardruna, Heilung, and Skald live was each an incredible experience that fans truly should search for. I was brought to tears a couple times. Probably way too late in this comment section for this to get any notice, but I would love to see you react to another wonderful Norwegian but also Sámi artist Mari Boine. Her music is deeply rooted in her Sámi background and her vocal work is an experience to behold the song, Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother (Oslo Opera House, 2009) is a very good representation of this.

As a practicing Heathen/Nose Pagan in Northern Europe myself, i think i can say on behalf of the community in my area (my friends some of which know Einar and Lindy-fay personally) that Einar and Wardruna are very special to us, there music and as people. i along with a large group from the community will be seeing Wardruna together next year, it will be my second time seeing them, i saw them in 2022 and it was a very powerful and spiritual experience. you should defiantly get to a show the energy is something else.
I’m half Finish and don’t understand a word, but the feeling and emotion is so visceral. Thanks for presenting this to us. BTW, there is no rule that minimalism must lack layers and density. This is a full representation of that principle.
Got to see them in concert last time they came to the US and the entire show had me in a trance. Feeling the vibrations in my body was absolutely a healing experience.
I had the immense privilige to see them live when they were preforming in the Czech Republic and I gotta be honest, I don't remember much of it, cause I was just in total trance but the feeling afterwards, the feeling that your spirit has a burden lifted and you are just free to explore the universe.... It's hard to put into words but if you get an opportunity to see them in live, you must seize it. You will feel somethin you might not have ever felt before.
Come to Poland and join us in some of our historical reanactment event, You have guarantee of music circle with campfire and amazing folk band "Daj Ognia" (friends of mine) which have this bit spiritual vibe too.

Been listening to her 10 years now, she will be 28 on June 15th.
I love Wardruna's music, it reaches into your soul. I read somewhere that those of us who get goose bumps or react strongly to music have brains that are wired different than folks who don't or folks who dont like music. The heavy breathy singing sounds like throat singing (Katajjaq to our Inuit people in Canada)
Give Kvitravn a try. it's another really good one from their last album. We also need a Wardruna/Heilung collaboration. That would be out of this world awesome.
What a nice reaction and some cool infos. You seem to like this genre very much. I lately found a Co-operation from two smaller bands, “Gealdýr” and “A tergo lupi”, the Song is called “Inn Riki”, which is really beautiful as well, their solo projects are also worth looking into. Hope you have a nice day. Stan
This washing of the body and soul that you said is exactly the feeling I got when I watched them live, here in Athens last year. That is a core memory right there for a lack of better words to describe it!!
Wow.... just WOW. This was so beautiful. I don't know if it was because of my Celtic and Scandinavian roots but I felt that. ❤ I totally agree about music bring brought back into schools. Music is so important. It's such a big part of my life. It was a great source of comfort and therapy when I was a teenager and still is. Being able to express those feelings through music is a wonderful thing and it's so important.
Just do it. Go and see them. I think iheard them first time live in 2013. On a vikingfestival in Bergen, Norway i was there and selling drums. Wardruna should be on stage that evening. I was putting up my tent and tables. And on the soundcheck just 10 meters from me. Helvegen. My father had past away just earlier and lot´s going on in my life. I just found myself in fosterposition under the table, crying. And soooo needed.
It's a real shame this only has 40k views after 3 months. People are really missing out, simply because they won't open their ears to anything beyond popular and big name artists.
Awesome reaction and analysis! 🙂. If you want to take a real spritual journey with Wardruna with some of the most beautiful singing by Einar ever, you should listen to "Andvervarljod" from their 2021 album "Kvitravn". That song takes you places....
I watched Wardruna live in Cambridge a couple of years back, they were truly stunning to experience, emotional, moving, something primal almost, like your ancestors had joined you for that 2 hours. Unbelievably beautiful music.
I wrote "Wardruna!" on the back of my notebook forever ago, had no idea why or what it even meant but this must've been it! Recently attempted writing in other languages using translate but it feels very bizarre trying to sing something you can't quite understand 1:1 as you do it... also was extremely difficult to do in general because you have no idea what the hell it's going to translate into (different syllable count, rhyming is just out-of-the-question). Loving these incredibly thorough analysis vids, hearing ONE word can unlock an entirely new method I had no idea was even possible. So I just really wanted to say yall've honestly made the happiest boy on this marble! I'll never forget the moment that crackley static "broke loose" (pretty sure it's actually bubble size & saturation) and my foot was in the door! Thank you × infinity for helping make the guitar my second instrument... guess a little inspiration really does go a long way. Happy jams and packed seats to yall

I was lucky to see them live last September in Herodes Atticus ancient theatre in Athens. It was beyond my expectations. It was like Odin and all Norse gods came to meet Zeus and the Olympians. Otherworldly, spiritual, mesmerizing, life altering experience! I will never forget this concert.
I had the honor to experience these emotions at a live concert in Poland Kielce. They are amazing and I recommend them to everyone if they have the opportunity to go to a live concert! Regards!
I have a band for you to explore with a really unique lead voice. The Tragically Hip is like the most Canadian band ever and the lead singer Gord had such an emotional yet controlled voice. Id looooooove to see you react to Grace, too. Just gives you major chills! Love from Canada ❤️
Not only does listening to good music help with mental health, recovery, etc, but as a singer (and I'm sure you've noticed it) but singing properly just makes you feel invigorated, especially with a spiritual based song, like this, or Helvegen, or Naudir, it makes you feel powerful
The Guess Who - Pain Train (Live at the Paramount) it foreshadows something that happened nearly 3 decades later in music. burton cummings is an incredible singer. K.D. Lang sings Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah leonard's favourite version and a well deserved standing ovation performance.
When listening to this, the beat of the heart in the song, you can actually feel it in your chest if you listen very clearly and closely when you quiet your mind. ❤
I think the reason why bands like Wardruna, Heilung, Skald, or Danheim are so successful is that they all have something in common. Their voices, their rhythms and the whole atmosphere in their music awakens something in all of us that is dormant or even suppressed most of the time. (as TCV described it beautifully.) It shows us that we all have one and the same roots. It shows that we really are an inseparable part of the nature of this world, no matter how much we try to wall ourselves off in cities and no matter how much we try to be civilized. This music is healing for us, because it is tackling exactly where healing can work best. ...at our roots!
No offense but their music is not healing, their music is pure worship of the devil. Dont get me wrong i like wardruna but in reality any worship of spiritual apart from God comes from the devil. I do understand its tradition but the point is its pagan worship. Bless you all.
@@peteredelman2155 What you are saying corresponds to what the Bible teaches. The Bible, on the other hand, came much, much later than what I was talking about. Our roots lie in Mother Earth and not in one of the three major abrahamic Worldreligions, all of which emerged from a time of war.

In the US, "Sukiyaki" recorded by Kyu Sakamoto: Lyricist-Rokusuke Ei: Composer-achidai Nakamura: Producer-Kōji Kusano topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1963, one of the few non-English songs to have done so, and the first in a non-European language. It was the only single by an Asian artist to top the Hot 100 until the 2020 release of "Dynamite" by the South Korean band BTS.[7] "Sukiyaki" also peaked at number eighteen on the Billboard R&B chart,[8] and spent five weeks at number one on the Middle of the Road chart. Nytt Land from Siberia are in the same genre and league as Wardruna and Heilung. Because of their origin, they are probably not as well known as the other two, but they definitely are on the level.
I've heard a lot about Nytt Land from. . . you!
@@TheCharismaticVoice And you know that I know what I am talking about! 😁
I would not put Heilung anywhere near Wardruna, they are performance art whereas Einar's music is purely about the music instead of playing dress up
@@victorkreig6089 sure, they have different styles of live performance. But if you just listen to the music, that doesn't matter. Musically, they're on the same level and definitely in the same genre.
@@TheCharismaticVoiceI have heard from a UA-camr that the best way to explain Nytt land is Heilung but colder. Nytt land is from Siberia. Nytt land is such a fascinating band musically as Heilung in my opinion. Give the song Ritual by Nytt Land a review. You won’t be disappointed.
There's definitely something hypnogogic about Wardruna
I got to see them in Mesa, Az probably 2 years ago... Amazing show... I had tickets for 3 years waiting to see them (covid delay) , then moved to South Carolina, still had the tickets.. Booked a flight, Flew back to AZ to see them live. No regrets.
I was at Red Rocks a few years back watching them perform. Saw them again live in Phoenix. I'm going back to Red Rocks again October 3rd. Their live performances are incredible!!
A new band for me to listen to and it has Old Norse Chanting? Awesome, I sure hope you left the subtitles on for this one
Wardruna is so spiritual. An experience.
Wardruna is a real spiritual journey, an exceptional experience. I love their performance and music and I hope I can be once in their concert... It's on my bucketlist. Grettings from Hungary!
Hearing him live was the best. His voice is intense and full of emotions. when he starts singing he hits your heart and soul.
You know, Elizabeth, when I was a kid, around 8 years old, I was given the gift of music.
Now, at 56, I still have it and as you have spoken of, it's vital to life.
It's one of the things that keeps me alive............
Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoyed it.
Great reaction, wardruna are one of my favourites and one of the only groups that can make me cry,Im hoping to see them live one day
Greetings from Norway, loved this =)
🎉 happy birthday to Mycroft!! it goes so fast!! it may be his birthday, but it's your birthING day. 😊 congratulations!! here's to many more for all 3 of you!! 🎂 sending love to everyone reading this, from Baton Rouge!! (where my "baby" boy just turned 27. 😅
Kirk made a huge, delicious meal for all of us, and celebrated not only Mycroft's birthday, but me as well. He's just so freaking perfect!
Wardruna really is something special. Be sure to check them out live if you have the chance.
I saw them live in 2022 and it was an epic experience being “washed” with their music as you reference here- I highly, highly recommend the live experience- I was lucky enough to snag tickets to their upcoming Red Ricks performance and I feel that will definitely add to the primal experience
It would be very difficult to rank them, but seeing Wardruna, Heilung, and Skald live was each an incredible experience that fans truly should search for. I was brought to tears a couple times. I am really considering going to Red Rocks to see Wardruna again, this year. Just need the logistics to work out.
I have seen all three of those bands and can confirm.
I saw Wardruna perform live at the castle in our town last year. I freaking loved it! They promised to come again.
We all know about getting goose bumps when listening to music, but this was a first for me as I had goose bumps on and in every fiber of me. I honestly thought I felt my heart get a goose bump.
This is incredible stuff love the drums all the sounds rhythmic patterns it just works
Creates a mood for sure the video is great too
Probably way too late in this comment section for this to get any notice, but I would love to see you react to another wonderful Norwegian but also Sámi artist Mari Boine. Her music is deeply rooted in her Sámi background and her vocal work is an experience to behold the song, Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother (Oslo Opera House, 2009) is a very good representation of this.
I’ve learned so much about music from you. I’ve always loved music but now I really appreciate so much more about it. Please do an analysis of Dave Matthews. I know there is a lot of reaction videos for bartender but for good reason also his NPR tiny desk concert is pretty amazing as well.
Love them! So great to see her experiencing
Don't know why. But this fantastic song made me think of two songs that would fit this channel perfectly:
1. Ghost in the Shell OST
2. Dead Can Dance - The Host of Seraphim
I remember I think you doing a reaction to Aurora opening a Song for Warduna some time ago, Aurora has been busy, and she is Everywhere now, Netflix, Movies, A Bunch of video game titles, she is on a 49 City 22+ Country Tour and a new Album releases on the 7th of June next month, I will be seeing her in In Concert November in Cali.
Been listening to her 10 years now, she will be 28 on June 15th.
My niece is studying Music Therapy at the local University. It’s great.
Wardruna are also great. Enjoyed this one from them.
I absolutely love this song, I listen to it almost every day (especially during my break at work, helps a lot)
Stan
They'll be at Red Rocks this year. Hope you get to see them live!
I'm considering making the trip!
I totally agree about music bring brought back into schools. Music is so important. It's such a big part of my life. It was a great source of comfort and therapy when I was a teenager and still is. Being able to express those feelings through music is a wonderful thing and it's so important.
I saw them live last year - it was amazing! Wardruna also likes to play in interesting places... Great artists.
Passionate Voices ... Simple Aged Machinery ... Melded together, they have a Calling to them. . Peace Thru Music
This definitely sounds very tribal....I loved it. Excellent reaction and analysis.
I absolutely love Wardruna. such a different group than Einar's other group. its amazing to see him grow into the artist he is!
My favourite ginger ❤I have tickets for them in Perth Australia in a small outdoor Auditorium I can’t wait 😊
I wish I could hear his voice more, it is my only complaint because his voice is fantastic.
My daugjter and i have the honour of seeing them at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison Colorado this Oktober 3rd.
To hear them live will be a spiritual experience for me.❤
What can I say, I already have my tickets for Wardruna in Mexico City, I have enjoyed their music for over a decade, and I'm waiting to see them Live
The Guess Who - Pain Train (Live at the Paramount)
it foreshadows something that happened nearly 3 decades later in music. burton cummings is an incredible singer.
K.D. Lang sings Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah
leonard's favourite version and a well deserved standing ovation performance.
Just got tickets to see these next year in York! Can't wait
Music therapy should be included much more often.
When listening to this, the beat of the heart in the song, you can actually feel it in your chest if you listen very clearly and closely when you quiet your mind. ❤
Saw them in Oakland, Ca. a couple of years ago. I had "the tingles" throughout.
with that songs name instant flashbacks to "malazan book of the fallen"... all the feels.... in other news: loving this song/vid :)
That is an absolutely enthralling and bewitching song
I want you so much to do a Tom waits reaction. There is a multitude of vocal styles he does from the early years up to now.
Thanks. This is on my play list now
The final line in the first lyrics before he makes that windy sound is "Like a wind, *then that airy sound* i dissapear"

Folk rock rules.
I've never heard of these guys , but the description is enticing.
I'm also curious about all of those instruments!
They became famous when some of their songs were used in the soundtrack of Vikings TV show
i wish you could understand norwegian, cause what he says fits so perfectly with is breath use in the first part
I would love to see you listen to some The plot in you, don’t look away and forgotten have some mindblowing and very intense vocal performances with some really interesting heavy moments! I think it would be super interesting to see what you think about either of these songs
You ever wonder why humans love rhythm so much?
It's believed to be due to our having spent so many months listening to our mother's heartbeat.
Sakamoto's follow-up to "Sukiyaki", "China Nights (Shina no Yoru)", charted in 1963 at number 58. That was the last song by an artist from Japan to reach the US pop chart for 16 years. This song will captivate and hold an audience like no other.
Wardruna and Munknorr as well. Something about these ancient sounds. Really is hypnotic.
Add Danheim, Heldom, Eolya, SKALD, Vigundr and A Tergo Lupi as well. The genre is stacked with insanely good artists.
Godsmack reefer headed woman, the live version from house of blues has got some amazing vocals and music from sully and John Costco. I can’t ever find anyone who has seen it or ever reviewed it and it’s stunning
