    I’m 77. My mother, who paid a great deal of attention to how she presented herself to the world, gave me great advice. She said: “Fashion will always go out of style, but style will never go out of fashion”. Develop “your” style that reflects how you want to present yourself to those around you. Be you, all the others are taken.

    I'm an older guy, (67) and I agree with much of what he says. Tailored, well fitting clothing always looks better than baggy, loose pants and shirts. However, I hate this trend nowadays of guys wearing "overly fitted" suits. When you see newscasters, tv hosts, sports commentators wearing suits that look like they're 2 sizes too small and form-fitting dress pants that are 2 inches too short, it looks ridiculous in my opinion.

    I am in my very very early 50’s. I never cared how I look. And even if I did, I didn’t know how to dress myself because no one taught me. I used to wear oversized shirts, baggy pants, etc. You get the picture. Four years ago, I started watching UA-cam videos on how to dress properly and to take good care of one’s body. I got rid of my old clothes and invested a few thousand pesos on new clothing. I now feel much more confident and look way much better. Thank you very much!!!

    As I got older my feet expanded from a D to EEE in width. Wearing New Balance sneakers isn't a fashion choice (no matter what Millennials tell you). It's a comfort choice. Most sneakers aren't available in wide sizes and are really uncomfortable. NB has what I need.

      Just because they're fashionable doesn't mean they're comfortable. Most athletic shoes or similar (Nike, Adidas, Converse, etc) aren't designed for comfort and for older people who have issues these are not options. Unfortunately, most styles are designed for younger people unless you have a lot of $$$ to spend.

    Great video! I am a fairly big guy - 6’5” and 270 lbs. instead of buying shirts to fit my shoulders and chest (that assumes you have a huge gut) and trying to get the tailor to chop up new shirts, I invest a bit more in tailor made shirts. They are always spot on with no bunching and the tails are long for me. Yes it costs more but everything is right from the moment you slip them on. This is more for those of use that can’t buy things that fit just right off the rack. When I wear them I also feel great!

    I‘d like to contribute with one fashion sin that freaks me out when I see it. I think it is an absolute no-go when a tie is either tied too short or too long! The tip of the tie must end directly above the belt buckle. Most men get it right but some just don’t put much effort into this affair. Mostly, the tie is tied too short and I really think that this reveals a certain lack of diligence when it comes to being dressed correctly.

For shoes, loafers are my regular go to. Sneakers fill in for work and outdoor activities like camping and hiking. I think confidence is the #1 way to pull off any look. Shirt-stays are totally unnecessary if you get your pants off of your hips and have them at the natural waist. Not to mention that it looks way better. • @tuberific454
      @tuberific454 Рік тому +1

      @@notyoungnotold3730 Billowy shirts are unflattering regardless of the rise of the trousers. But shirt stays can address that issue by applying a constant downward force ie a perpetual exertion of a tucking action onto the shirt, resulting in a more streamlined silhouette.

    • @RobertJonesWightpaint
      @RobertJonesWightpaint Рік тому

      @@tuberific454 I might want a streamlined silhouette if I were a torpedo, or possibly a sea-lion. Being neither, I don't want to look as though someone has painted clothes on my body - you probably look absolutely fine in your choice of clothes, but I just wouldn't. Shirt stays are pointless if you wear genuinely waist-fitting trousers: braces/suspenders also help, and render shirt-tucking totally unnecessary.

    • @EricJJones
      @EricJJones 19 днів тому

      That is because your shirt doesn't fit. If your shirt fits, you can have it stay down. Plus your trousers as someone stated below aren't fitting correctly, because they wouldn't let your shirt move much. Also, your undershirt and the placement of your undershirt matters. The undershirt inside your underwear helps your shirt stay down. All should fit and drape naturally. The only stays you should have are collar stays.

Even though I’m carrying a little extra weight around the middle they fit great at the shoulders and chest.
    When I tried these on and compared them to my current dress shirts, well I couldn’t believe how I’ve been wearing those frumpy dress shirts…53 yrs old and barely figuring out I’ve been wearing the wrong clothes all these years…it’s all about the fit, great advice!

    A very timely video that reaffirms some changes i have recently made. i am in my early 70's but look younger due to good genetics (mainly a full head of hair with just the right amount of gray highlights). When i was younger i used to have my suits tailor made which made me look good as i had lost about 30 pounds through better diet and exercise. About 8 years ago i did gain some weight back and i started seeing a personal trainer (at my wife's suggestion of course!) for about 1 year. After that i became somewhat of a gym rat and now faithfully lift weights 5 days a week. i lost a bit of the weight but the rest has been redistributed into more upper body muscle mass (arms and chest). So recently i have been replacing items in my wardrobe (yeah i ditched several pairs of those baggy pleated pants and some of those baggy shirts). thanks goodness i never bought any of those square toed shoes that were (are) in my opinion butt ugly. i have some classic slip on loafers and lace up dress shoes that have remained in style. Even underwear..no more baggy undershirts and baggy boxers, just ones that accentuate my upper body and arms. i am not trying to look younger (though i DO want to continue to act younger). But diet, exercise and staying active are key components to feeling and acting younger. The up to date styling is the cherry on top.

I agree that the clothes you show in this video look better on you than the picures from the 90's. That works for you. Clothing really comes down to preference. I prefer Western style clothing. Wranglers with a button down shirt, Dan Post boots and a Stetson. I agree with a snug fit on shirts but slim fit pants are not for me. Tennis shoes I wear to the gym and thats the only time I wear them. I never wear loafers and dress shoes are a thing of the past for me. When I wear a suit I wear dress boots. Everyone has their own style. You have to wear what you like and be yourself. Interesting video.

    am comfortable in and if someone doesnt like it too bad, i see tooooooooooo many fashion people that look so out of place i laugh, fashion styles are created to make money for stores bottom line. as for looing younger, it is what it is, your looks make you look younger not your clothes, you only look like neater by being in style not younger. if you look at older women, most dress for what suits them and those that want the latest styles look out of place.

    All sized to the nearest 1/2" so they fit perfectly, and all in long staple (Pima) cotton for comfort and durability from Lands End.
    Classic shoes in exact size (8.5 EEE) as well. Engineers need to be able to go from the boiler room to the boardroom with a tie and blazer.

    To my mind, the critical aspect with boat shoes is the color of the sole. If it is white or neutral then more appropriate for boat or brach or tropical place. If the colour is dark / similar to the top of the shoe then it can be more anywhere and this being especially if the laces are also a dark.

    I am afraid that I am going to have to dissent from a few things that you said in the video. First, boat shoes are definitely not something that you have to give up if you are over 40. When I was in my twenties (and I’m 65 now) I remember seeing very distinguished gentleman wearing a polo shirt, navy blazer, chinos and boat shoes. In my opinion, the look was timeless. The key, however, is to have a good looking pair of boat shoes, not the pair that you bought ten years ago.
    The other thing that I will disagree with is pleated pants. In the photo you posted, the biggest issue is the length of the pants, not the pleats. Fix that, and you have a fine fit.
    Finally, you fall into the trap of thinking that clothes need to be form fitting to look nice. I can’t tell you how many times that I’ve seen younger guys, with athletic builds even, go for the slimmest fit possible. The end result is a hideous look where fabric is bunched at every joint. The classic look is a clean drape from the top of the garment to the bottom. That is best achieved by giving some room to move in the garment, and not hugging too closely to the body. Obviously, gentleman who have extra pounds are at a disadvantage. But the most important thing that they can do to improve the lines between shirts and pants is to wear suspenders instead of a belt. The pants hang better and the shirts drape better with that simple change. Of course, that encourages the wearing of sports coats and blazers to hide the suspenders. But surprise! As an older guy, you can pull that off easily.

  • @sonicd57
    @sonicd57 Рік тому +17

    Nothing wrong with “chasing” and wearing current trends at 40+ if you can actually pull it off. I dress more conservatively (appropriately) at the office, with well fitted and semi-tailored clothing. Then on evening and weekends I let my youthful energy and expression out with more artistic and creative clothing choices. Yes, they make me appear less professional, but I don’t care, because it’s outside of work and I am expressing the way I feel inside… and it’s fun to not follow every rule just because your supposed to look like a serious “dad”.
