It just wouldn’t be right wrapping up this season without him. The mane, the myth, and the legend John Glover, aka Lionel Luthor, joins Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum as we officially wrap up our rewatch of Season 1 of Smallville and the finale episode Tempest. It was a treat talking to Glover. He remembered what it was like going from a guest star to a regular, how deep the theme of family was in the show, and his true opinion on the character of Lionel Luthor. When John Glover joined the show it became a master class in acting for sure in Smallville. It felt like a serialized storytelling with superhero backdrop. Glover's Lionel Luthor brought a sense of human psychology into the storyline when he became a series regular from season 2 all the way through season 7.

I started Smallville at start of S3 from non stop positive reviews even tho I was cynical thinking 90210 teen drama, but catching up binging into S3 I was amazed as the last show I wanted to fan follow and get into was Star Trek DS9 which showed the Trek franchise how to properly create characters make realistic connective stories and provide organic feelings for viewers. I as a fan feel it got reduced once Lex & Lionel left and then leaned into comicbook structure than theater into S9-10. btw Ima a Witwer fangirl because of how well they pulled off S8 Doomsday as a Bill Bixby/Hulk story.
John Glover seems like one of those amazing humans who are both a force of nature but also like a gentle, warm slice of happiness. God bless that man.

I can't imagine Smallville without John Glover! His portrayal of Lionel Luthor was pure perfection! It was like adding that secret ingredient to a dish that makes it delicious!
I love how Tom remembers specific moments where he learned something from another person. Not all young actors are so open and ready to learn, much less able to recognize specific lessons they've learned from a certain person at a certain moment. I just love that he still remembers those and brings them up frequently.
We need Glover to return for the season 4 episode Transference! The episode where Clark and Lionel switch bodies, would be fantastic to have both of them watch it, and tell stories from behind the scenes of learning each others mannerisms. Love the show, the podcast, everything about this! Looking forward to future episodes!

I think my favorite seasons of Lionel Luthor were seasons 4 through 6, because you really see him go from "I need to make my son strong and ruthless, like me" to "what have I done? My son is just like me."
It's great to see an actor perform those subtle changes of character over a long period of time.

The latter only works bc of early Lionel but you are right. When he dies, i felt such storm of emotions together. I wanted to grab him out of the show.
Best Glover scene for smallville is him and Clark changing bodies in transference. John and Clark's mannerisms were very well done
As well as becoming the vessel for Jor-El, embracing Clark and it driving a further wedge not only between Lex and Lionel, but Lex and Clark.

How can you not love John Glover? Very gifted actor, just can't imagine Smallville without him. Chemistry between Mr Glover and Rosey was incredible. I love his witty sense of humor.🙂Still, 60th class reunion was very sad story...because it's real. Can't wait for season 2💚. Rosey, Tom, Ryan and... Glover. 4th member of Talk Ville. I love how self aware John Glover is. Such an accomplished and experienced actor, but he understands how important everything and everyone else is in making the product. I also like how matter-of-fact John Glover is in a way that advanced age makes a person. You obviously think about mortality but he is just so real about it.
Also. "Lion -el" does point to his character being synonymous with having a mane of power. His hair is like the biblical Samson. He shows it off, rubs it in Lex's face (metaphorically), and does go through some things that reflect in his look.
What a kind soul John is. It was an absolute pleasure listening to and being included in this nostalgic conversation amongst old friends/family. Oh boy this part of the finale for Smallville season 1 was gut wrenching. This was the start of Lionel Luthor's story as he is about to start grooming his son into becoming the villain he is meant to be for Superman.
I truly hope this podcast lasts through all 10 seasons. The feels, all the feels.... I can't express how amazing these are. I think you guys are pioneering a new wave of online entertainment. Listening to the actual actors of their own shows break down their experiences and interactions with others is epic in every good way possible. I love this show and hope it carries on for a long time.

Guys i just want to say how shocked i am on your guy's take on yourselves as actors. You both seriously underestimate how good you both truly are. Its always astounded me why I never seen tom in more movies after or during Smallville and Michael you too. Also there will never be a more well known Lex Luther to me than you. You are my Lex. You both do such an amazing job on this show. Rosenbaum your range in episodes like Shattered, Asylum, to Lexmas, to to the entirety of the 6th season and tom your range from episodes like Red, Splinter, and Transferance, and Reckoning showcases how great of actors you both truley are. Love the show. Keep up the great work.

You know what I like? I like that Michael can call up past cast mates for a show he did 20 something years ago and ask them to come onto his podcast thing and they say 'sure.' That feels like a talent and speaks to how likeable you must be as a person, even if you did play a ruthless villain (albeit in his formulative years)

Not to spoil anything, but Season 3 is when Lionel was at his best. John Glover did such an amazing job being the big major villain for the whole season.
Gosh, having John Glover on the podcast was an absolute joy. I love seeing the chemistry between you three is still there. Lionel was essential to Smallville. I hope he comes back for more appearances!
What’s incredible to see is how much folks like John Glover, Annette O'Toole and John Schneider love their craft. All three of them said instantly that there’s nothing else they would rather do than acting right now.
I know this is the end of Season 1, and I have kicked myself for not know about Talk Ville before now, but this episode brings a lot out in John Glover. He truly is an amazing person and you can tell that Michael and Tom really love him, not only as a co-worker, but as a member of their own family. It almost brought tears to my eyes hearing him talk about death, but seeing him smile, you can tell he is very appreciative of his life and his accomplishments throughout his career. We love you John!

In the Pilot episode of the podcast, Michael had said this was the type of show you sat down and watched with your dad. I genuinely can’t thank you guys enough for giving me those memories, because that’s exactly what Smallville was for I (and many others), and now that he’s gone they’re memories I cherish a lot more. Thank you guys and I can’t wait to start season 2 with you all.

Wow was it ever nice to see John Glover. So glad he was cast in the role of Lionel Luthor as he was truly fantastic. For the first time I watched the 1988 movie Scrooged last night and was pleasantly surprised to see a very young John Glover. It's sad to see him older now and that he thinks about death so often. Hopefully he has a lot of living still to do!

Smallville will always be my favorite show. I don’t think it’s even possible for anything to ever compare. God, I love it. I still rewatch it over and over and over and over again. I can’t watch it enough. Never gets old. Awesome hearing Michael and Tom’s thoughts on each episode, along with guests they have. John Glover was freakin amazing as Lionel. Nobody could have done it better, or probably even as well as him. The whole cast was phenomenal. I’m a huge Lex fan, Michael Rosenbaum was absolutely perfect.

I am not surprised that Tom and John cannot remember what they did in some episodes because I wouldn't. Imagine if someone asked you to remember what you were doing in your job twenty years ago, and I mean blow by blow you wouldn't be able to without having some kind of reference especially if everyday was the same.

It's funny you say that, because watching this show actually takes me back to 2001 etc., and I've been remembering how much I hated my job at the time, it was a rrreally toxic workplace, my boss was a man-hating lesbian, every day was a battle. Watching Smallville was a relief, a bit of escapism, hopeful message, and such wonderful onscreen chemistry with the cast it was a blessing...

John is of course irreplaceable. I personally never cared about Lex's personal life until seeing Glover's acting. Lionel is just an enigma and John brought that out. That being said, Michael is still the best Lex and I can't see anyone else filling those shoes. Omg, the chemistry and the way they are able to play off of each other is just magic. 😍

Both John Schneider and John Glover's respective characters somehow grew into becoming two father figures to me as a kid and teenager, back to the early 2000s to early 2010s. So glad to see John Glover doing well.

The depth and dimension John Glover gave to his character and any scene he was in was incredible, it was like he'd come out of the television at you, it's something that's really rare in television.

So lovely to see John Glover on the show. Lionel was such a fascinating character and the show definitely wouldn't have been the same without him. His relationship with Lex, his relationship with Clark and how he influenced both to be who they would become was so incredible. How he was so harsh on Lex and essentially caused all of his bad traits and turned him into a monster (and as we saw from the mirror universe in S10 he would have done the same with Clark had he raised him). But then Clark had a positive influence on him and led to him actually having a redemption and striving to do the right thing. It was so fascinating how he saw Clark as "a man you'd be proud to call a son" and he constantly called him "son" even in front of Lex which further infuriated Lex and caused his downfall. But only when Lionel had redeemed himself did he realise what he'd done to Lex and the monster he'd created. His death really symbolises everything he'd become. He died protecting Clark's secret at the hands of his son who hated him more than anything for everything he had done to him. "No one will even remember your name." Fantastic
I first saw John Glover when he was working for the Happy People Corporation. I've loved to hate him ever since. He always plays such rich characters (emotionally). Thanks to him for being a part of it and your wonderful body of work.
Also John Glover is an incredible actor! I loved him in smallville obviously but he was also recently the best part of season 6 of Fear the Walking Dead
best episode so far on talkville smallville has been my fav show of all time and still till this day i have a tradition where i watch smallville once a year and have been doing that for the past 8 years
@43:27 The kiss between Chloe and Clark revealed another one of Clark's superpowers. His breath is fresh since his regenerative powers prevent him from getting bad breath. After Chloe kisses him, she replies why is my breath "so" minty? Not just minty, she added a "so".
Clark's has a lot of other abilities as well such as he doesn't get dirty e.g if you threw a bucket of oil over him in about hour it would slide of his body leaving him as if nothing happened
He smell great all time, only beings with heightened sense of smell can detect it. Lana in Smallville when she was a vampire commented on how amazing he smelt.
He very intelligent - Kara in Smallville learned how to hack after watching Jimmy do it once
He has a photographic memory
He can see the electromagnetic spectrum, he once tracked radio waves across a city (
He can see in dark
He has telescopic and microscopic vision and can see an atom
He learned a Kryptonian martial arts called Torquasm Rao and Torquasm Vo which gave him incredible mental defence and the ability to see someone's soul. Later he developed the ability to see in four dimension.

Yes, there are a few of Clark's powers that he never used or he used one time and never used again. The first is his telescopic and microscopic vision; he never developed that, or they never showed it. He mentioned it once in season 9 or 10 when he told Chloe he could see fifty miles in any direction.
The second is his intelligence; Clark is super bright and can learn anything in minutes, if not seconds. They started with his brilliance in the early season but never progressed further. Below is a clip of Clark doing a long calculation in a fraction of a second.

Also forgot to add they never quite utilise his photographic memory. Clark can never forget anything he read, see, watch or hears.
Smallville is the one that started everything The Flash, Green Arrow, and the Arrowverse, and I have nothing but love for the show, but if I could make one criticism is that they never explored his intelligence. He is much smarter than Chloe. His intelligence is greater than any human who has ever lived by light years, but you wouldn't know it if you watched Smallville since he leaves everything to Chloe. He once told Kara back in season 7 that Chloe was more intelligent than he and Kara combined lol. Kara hacked into a government organization after she saw Jimmy do it once.
John Glover is a brilliant actor who made the character Lionel what it was...it would be hard to see anyone else in that roll. He brought something that can't be taught or coached, for the roll. As a result, it brought the character Lex along and gave even more depth.
Two words come to mind when I see the name John Glover, and that's AWARD WINNING 🌟

It funny that they mention that Lionel goes blind, he kills clarks dad, he hits on clarks mom, he swaps bodies with Clark, but yet when he says "lionel goes to Jail" they like "HEY dont say that..spoilers" hahah

A great episode to finish off season 1. Smallville fans are so lucky/grateful to have John Glover as our Lionel Luthor (of course that goes for pretty much the entire Smallville cast).
Still hoping that we see Tom get some lead host duties for season 2 (I'm obviously biased as Superman has been my favourite superhero since I was a kid, but didn't fully appreciate the character or mythology until I watched Smallville).
Looks like Tom and Michael are starting to realise how much fans love both Ryan's character and the episodes he's in.

John Glover. This is the guy who played Dr. Woodrue in Batman & Robin, and did the voice of The Riddler on the Batman Animated Series. He's a TREMENDOUS force of acting talent. Right up there with the best actors who have graced stage and screen as far as I'm concerned.
25:35 this is why Glover was amazing in the role, my top tier list when it comes to tv characters that play that role jumping between hero and villain; he has such a crazy arc that when we get to his end with Lex and Clark stare off, its a highlight of the series

No better guest for the season 1 finale than John Glover. I hope to meet him one day at a con. It's great to see how much of a father figure he played for Michael both on screen and in real life. Can't wait for Talk Ville season 2!
I am so glad that Whitney's final scene with Clark was not taken out because it shows how Clark's orbit affects those around him. He brings out the goodness in people or those around them and inspires them to improve. This has been shown many times throughout the series Whitney the self-centered bully, Lionel Luthor, Lex (without Clark, Lex would have embraced his darkness long ago. When Lex lost his friendship with Clark he started moving towards the dark side until it led to his father's demise at his hand cementing his darkside forever) Green Arrow (when he was possessed by Darkseid darkness it was Clark that lifted the darkness from him just by talking to him), something that was referred to as impossible by Granny Goodness in which Oliver Queen replied that Clark could do the impossible; this is why Darkseid was so afraid of him and wanted him dead because Clark bring home to even the darkess souls.
I agree the main power of a hero is to inspire people to be better, and Clark has inspired so many people to change their ways to be better than what they are
In season 4, Bart Allen, also known as the Flash, stole things from people and big corporations because he knew that insurance wouldn't charge the person or corporation. Clark convinced him it wasn't right even though no one got hurt. Bart eventually came to see the era on his way and gave back a painting he stole from Lex worth millions. He ultimately became a hero.
In season 5, Arthur Curry thought that the ends justify the means. He was an eco-warrior who would blow up empty corporation buildings if he felt they endangered marine life. Clark convinced him they were always another way, and he, too inspired by Clark, became a hero.
Season 5: Clark meets a woman called Andrea Rojas, who was stabbed in the heart and given a heart transplant from a meteor-infested heart, giving her superpowers. She used those powers to go on an act of revenge to avenge the man who stabbed her in the heart and killed her mother. Clark tried telling her that revenge wasn't the answer, but she didn't listen and murdered the man who killed her mom. Her redemption is not shown in Smallville's primary season, but it is shown in the Chloe Chronicles, where she regrets her actions and wishes that she had listened to Clark; she even stops a group of rogue metahumans from killing Lex and tells Chloe that Clark was right because revenge didn't bring happiness and vowed to use her powers to catch criminals instead.
However, before Lionel found redemption, he brought out the worse in people. He often turned good people into murderers. The sheriff is a good example when he tried to kill someone because Lionel had dirt on him.

In addition to a saved/died count, they should start a KO count. Lex getting a concussion every week must have contributed to his instability in later seasons. Also great to hear from Glover. Whether it's his commanding presence on Smallville or character-actor parts like 52 Pick-Up, Glover steals every scene he's in.

John glover is a national treasure , I’m an 80’s kid and always watched things with him in it. Such a superb actor , and I love that he and rosey are so close
The thing I noticed when I first watched it was the intertwining triangles of characters, Lex Clark Lionel, Lana Chloe Clark, Clark Lex Jonathon, etc. it created great interactions between them all
