Now seeing all the true hard work, all the actual development and time I must spend in order to "catch up" to other great artist in order to get into schools for art and animation like Cal arts, to pursue my aspirations, all kinda tears me to pieces not gonna lie. 3. I hope this and my future advicey video can give you the tools and support to improve at a good rate. As you already said, it’ll take a lot of determination to get better fast. I draw every day and have done for most of my life but only considered what I draw exactly more recently. I think the main think is to really hone your observational skills. This can easily be done in a year if approached well. That way, you’ll have a good knowledge of proportions, ways things move and work etc. You’ll also build a visual library both literally and in your head (muscle memory) that will inform your creative work and stylisation. Best of luck to you. You have plenty of time, don’t exhaust yourself and instead enjoy ever minute of the learning process, art block and lack of motivation definitely occurs along the way but you’re gonna overcome it. I know you can achieve great things. :) Also yay! Thanks for liking my accent haha
I'm 19 too and I feel the exact same way! My problem also lies in comparing myself to others and seeing how bad my art is instead of actually drawing. Hope we both could reach this level of skill in the future and I'll be cheering both of our progess because after all it's never too late to learn! I'm Glad that this fantastic artist gave us this motivation
@@zazazazaza1999 19 too here and also on the lower end of my art skill, it's not a race! There are so many amazing artists out there in multiple different crafts who completed their famous works in their 50s, and even later sometimes. There are so many different types of people, advantages/ disadvantages, your situation etc that can change your speeds and you shouldn't beat yourself up about it, you can barely control it. I really struggle with my confidence levels compared to ppl my age and younger and I gotta remember I started this passion at 16, and then went through some of the worst years of my life with mental illness that made doing art even as schoolwork nearly impossible. You'll realise your potential and exceed it, it's not a matter of if it's a matter of when, and it don't matter if you do it 5 years later, because you're there anyway. Even the best artists have talked about "imposter syndrome" and wondering when ppl will "see they're not as good as ppl think they are", it's so normal what you feel but like, we all have advantages and disadvantages, even when someone's skill level is higher. I'm going to a good art school in britain rn, idk about calarts since they don't do a masters yet in character animation and their prices are rapidly rising so, so much i don't think it's worth it for me anymore even tho their teaching is next level, but you're not alone and you're not a failure just because your art journey is different to others, that's what will make you a unique artist! :)
Would it be possible to make a vid on how you reached your current skill level? Like how often you draw and of you took classes, what ones? Also awesome advice! I'm not even looking to goto calarts, just wanna improve my art
hello! as a little kid, my dream was to live in paris and paint all day in front of the eiffel tower. as the years passed this idea started seeming quite unrealistic, but the wish to become an artist stayed with me the entire time. for a long time i had no idea of what i would do in the future, and then in 2017/2018 i found out about art schools. i realized i could actually pursue a career in art, just like i wanted to be when i was little, and that it wasn't impossible as i had convinced myself it was! i just turned fifteen years old and at the moment i want to write and illustrate my own books. but not like children's books. i want to mix "normal" writing with comics and big illustrations that cover up entire pages! this idea started after i read the book "moletom" (sweatshirt) by a brazilian author, julio azevedo, that is basically the kind of book i want to write. not sure if there is a translated version, but it is a great book. i thought maybe i could apply to an art school on an illustration program? i'm pretty satisfied with my writing, so i don't wanna go to college for that. there are still two years left until graduating high school, so in the meantime i'm gonna do some research in art schools! right now, my dream school is artcenter, but it seems really hard to get into. also, it's bit expensive. anyway, i guess i just wanted to say thank you for the great video! it helped me a lot! also excuse me if i made any grammar mistakes, i'm a brazilian kid and have only been studying it for about two years, so i'm still not fluent! hope you have a great day :)
Congradulations on getting in calarts, That's a huge accomplishment! You really show a great range of different skills, and interesting points of advice. Your video is helping me apply to a different art school. I hope I can get it too. So thank you so much for this video, I hope you like it there!

something that gives me a bit (a lot) of anxiety about applying to Cal Arts (or any art school), is that a lot of the applicants are already really good. When I think that I want to go to art school, I'm thinking I'm going to learn the things you show you already know in your portfolio. So, if I have to learn the things I want to learn in school BEFORE school then why do I even apply? I know that there are a lot of things that they teach that you can't find by just studying by yourself, but the fact that they expect you to have so much knowledge and talent beforehand makes me feel kinda insecure...
There’s plenty of amazing art schools that teach the more fundamental stuff but Calarts is not that. It’s like applying to an engineering degree - they expect you to already have a base knowledge in maths and physics, same applies here but with things like anatomy. There is so much to learn beyond drawing though so I find this school totally worth it. Part of its appeal is the ridiculously high standard the students are held to. It pushes us to our extremes :)
CalArts is actually an animation school. They obviously teach art but it's more perfecting than learning. CalArts is a feeder school for big animation industries.
That's what I was thinking about! And also everyone who learn in CalArts is so open and loud and expressive, and performer in general, it gives a lot of anxiety tbh... (Sorry if I said something that doesn't make any sense, I'm not that good at English yet)
@@Meppity Hey! I’m really late to the party (sorry, lol), however, would you happen to know/ have a list of what those ‘ridiculously high’ standards are? I would be good to know in advance.
@@Meppity I know the basics of traditional art and anatomy but I have never went to a life drawing class, I did draw from life but where I live nude life drawing classes are not very common. Is it always neccesary to life draw the nude ones or can I look at pictures?
Thank you for making this video! I’m merely 14, but since last year I’ve wanted to go to CALARTS. I’m extremely passionate about art and it’s always a joy to make. This video helps me see what I can do and improve on, so again, thank you! :)

Does CalArts worry about high school grades/test scores as well as skill as far as considering students? I am already in an art college but I wanted to go to CalArts and I did not do well in High School. Also does CalArts have scholarships?
CallMeKapkid Calarts requires a GPA of 2.0 or higher iirc but there might be opportunity to appeal for that to be overlooked if it’s lower. As for scholarships, I think everyone in my class got at least $2500 (per year) in scholarships. The highest is around $20000 ☺️
Hi there! Thank you so much for this video. I'm a 15 year old who is aspiring to become and animator. I absolutley love how you submitted your own story with your original characters! I also want to one day animate my own show one day and I want to go CAL or Ringling. You are so inspiring and I wish the best for you. Good luck!
Hi Anya congrats and thank you so much for making a video like this!!! I've been watching Calarts sketchbook videos for years and you're the first one on UA-cam who makes a video for Calarts portfolio. I wish this video could have existed last year when I was preparing my Calarts portfolio. I was rejected by Calarts this year but I'm preparing to apply it again. Just like you said, being rejected by a school just means getting a kick at the butt and being asked to try harder next time. I sincerely hope that with your valuable advice I can push myself harder this year and create a more competent Calarts portfolio :))! I have a question that I wish you could answer. Regarding to life drawings (like drawing live models, animals, and people at the cafe), did you always draw from observing real life, without using any photo references? I tried to do all my life drawings from observing real life last year, but sometimes it got tricky because animals in real life constantly move around and sometimes I got nervous when strangers spotted me drawing people in the cafe. If you did sometimes use photo references, how did you balance between observing from real life and from photos?
Suzzz Hi!! Thanks for liking my work and good luck to you in future applications :) for my life drawing, a lot was from video reference because I only have access to one model. Croquis Cafe on YT is great!! As for animals and cafe drawings, they are about 80% drawn live but sometimes I take a photo in case the subject moves and I can’t replicate the rest of the image from my head. The more I draw, the less I use photos though
CONGRATS!!! CalArts is my dream school and I hope to transfer once I get my general ed out of the way :,)) This is so helpful especially for somebody who aspires to follow the fine arts path 😁

Also yay! Thanks for liking my accent haha
Nah, none of those feelings are strange in the least! They're completely normal~
That’s a mood! I get it though.
Congratulations! Loving the matching yellow theme of your room and outfit.
Would it be possible to make a vid on how you reached your current skill level? Like how often you draw and of you took classes, what ones? Also awesome advice! I'm not even looking to goto calarts, just wanna improve my art
@@charlie11111 That’s rather rude and dismissive.
hello!
as a little kid, my dream was to live in paris and paint all day in front of the eiffel tower. as the years passed this idea started seeming quite unrealistic, but the wish to become an artist stayed with me the entire time. for a long time i had no idea of what i would do in the future, and then in 2017/2018 i found out about art schools.
i realized i could actually pursue a career in art, just like i wanted to be when i was little, and that it wasn't impossible as i had convinced myself it was!
i just turned fifteen years old and at the moment i want to write and illustrate my own books. but not like children's books. i want to mix "normal" writing with comics and big illustrations that cover up entire pages! this idea started after i read the book "moletom" (sweatshirt) by a brazilian author, julio azevedo, that is basically the kind of book i want to write. not sure if there is a translated version, but it is a great book.
i thought maybe i could apply to an art school on an illustration program? i'm pretty satisfied with my writing, so i don't wanna go to college for that.
there are still two years left until graduating high school, so in the meantime i'm gonna do some research in art schools! right now, my dream school is artcenter, but it seems really hard to get into. also, it's bit expensive.
anyway, i guess i just wanted to say thank you for the great video! it helped me a lot!
also excuse me if i made any grammar mistakes, i'm a brazilian kid and have only been studying it for about two years, so i'm still not fluent!
hope you have a great day :)
Congradulations on getting in calarts, That's a huge accomplishment! You really show a great range of different skills, and interesting points of advice. Your video is helping me apply to a different art school. I hope I can get it too. So thank you so much for this video, I hope you like it there!

I’m eleven , I’ve always wanted to work for Disney, by going to cal arts. This is extremely inspirational, and is helping me learn what to practice to get in! Thank you so much!
I was 12 when I re-started art good luck, im 15 now and in three years applying to Calarts(first choice), can't wait to see how it goes.
oh my thanks for this !! im making my portfolio for a design school and your video is really helpful :')
also congrats for get into calarts !! your art is so cool and you're so talented. you totally deserve it. ✨
What kind of media are you looking to use? I'm more thoughtful of sculptures and 3d art ....collage and abstract kindly share I'm absolutely confused
Those ones you say you made at 15 are so good for a 15 year old wtf??? I’ve been doing art all my life and I’m 19 and nowhere near the level you’re at. You’re amazing :O
You are going to improve as well! Don't give up☺️
I feel the same way about my art and sometimes it can get really frustrating, but remember that everyone improves at their own rithm. You can do it!
i’m not sure why but i teared up a lot during this video. you’re such a strong, beautiful inspirational young lady and i wish you the best of luck on your travels. thank you. 💛
something that gives me a bit (a lot) of anxiety about applying to Cal Arts (or any art school), is that a lot of the applicants are already really good.
Is it always neccesary to life draw the nude ones or can I look at pictures?
such an organized video!! i was literally just watching portfolio videos because im applying to ringling. i love your yellow room!!!
Thank you for making this video! I’m merely 14, but since last year I’ve wanted to go to CALARTS. I’m extremely passionate about art and it’s always a joy to make. This video helps me see what I can do and improve on, so again, thank you! :)
This...um, made my confidence go down 😂

Edit: i just watched the whole video and I’m absolutely stunned by the amount of work you put into your app and the video, you deserve this and i also loved seeing cssson at the end :))
David D. Ahhh thanks!! And yeah Cssson will always have a special place in my heart ☺️☺️
One of the most colorful, diverse and more interesting AND awesome sketchbooks Ive seen
I don't live in the USA so this very informative video didn't really help me lol but i love all of your artworks. They really show the spectrum in which your art skills can stretch. ALSO, that demo reel was amazing and i hope you can work on awesome projects in the future :)
Can't wait to see your work on the Calarts Animation channel soon!
Did anyone else laugh at the green dude at the end of her reel? 😂 amazing

@@Meppity Thank you so much :))!

honestly, i've been dreading college as of late, but i've been watching lots of art school tips and portfolio videos, this really helped me get my priorities straight. i'm already a junior in highschool and i feel like my skills are so behind compared to ppl my age or even ppl younger than me. it's a little disheartening but it's also very motivating and gives me bigger and better goals to work towards. ty for making this video : ))

It's quite a coinkydink because I too was recently accepted into a Fine Arts program for Collage :D How bout that huh?! You are very inspiring and you'll do amazing things. I know you can do it!!!
i love this advice, my first portfolio was at age 12, using art from when i was 11(to get into a high school program). i have another part advice, if you are being interviewed face to face, be real, be you. say if you are sarcastic let it politely leak so they understand who you are and so they don’t set a tainted perspective on you.
also i love your shirt!!
INSANELY GOOD!! Congrats on getting into calarts!! Wow! I'm fourteen, and I REALLY love drawing and playing with characters and stories and animating things. This was really inspirational, for many of us I think. It's got me a little scared, not gonna lie, none of my art is HALF as good as some of the things you were making at 15. I mean, your eye for form and perspective are SO good. I liked the little story that was in your demo reel, I think, that you wanted to make into a tv show? It was cute. If it's ever made, I'll watch it!! Once again, congratulations, and best of luck!!
I am in an art program at my high school. Only about 30 get in out of the 200-300 applications. I submit my portfolio and i was accepted! Even though it was more easy, i am still excited for more things!
