This is literally the most beautiful sketchbook I've ever seen in my life 😱 I especially love the way you used those long pieces of paper to unfold and reveal even more art, I'll have to try that in my next sketchbook! You're an inspiration!
Hi, Im not Anya, but I think I can help, the only way to learn how to draw buildings, environments, concepts, landscapes, etc is redrawing them. Go to Pinterest and redraw all concept arts and landscapes that you can, if u do that, you will get the "vibe" that backgrounds have in Animation. Another useful tip is, when drawing backgrounds, think outside the box: houses dont need to be straight as a Cube, cars dont need to have wheels, I mean, play with shapes and colors! AND PLEASE, DO A LOT OBSERVATIONAL DRAWINGS, GO OUTDOORS AND DRAW ALL THE BUILDINGS YOU CAN!! good luck!!
obviously practicing is a big one lol, but for buildings, I would suggest variety (maybe try a skyscraper and then a cabin instead of just doing tons of skyscrapers and getting tired of them, for example) and definitely sketch it out with pencil first, because all those lines are hard to get right and keep straight if you just start with ink. backgrounds are super hard for me too so I won't try to help with that lol
I definitely think learning things all about perspective, vanishing points, angles, colour theory, accuracy versus creativity (for example sometimes very slight imperfections make it much more visually appealing etc) are super useful to learn. Practising a large variety of landscapes is very useful, I found the book "perspective made easy" helped me kickstart the technical stuff, but definitely look around and keep bringing in knowledge and inspiration from around you until you feel comfortable with your final process/ vision. I also found out plenty of background artists on twitter like Steve Lowtwait post tons of useful info on how to bring a background from sketch to finish. Sorry for the novel, I'm also still new and learning about stuff like this, but I hope this helps!! ^_^
I know that's something people love screaming at folks but using references really helps a lot. With time you kinda get a feel for the dymentions and constructions of backgrounds and will eventually most likely not need to use references anymore
reminder: your sketchbook doesn't neat to be as neat or organized. it's your space to work and everyone works differently. especially with calarts sketchbooks that require you to be organized and show your best works. if its a private sketchbook be as messy as you want and have fun
when i began my sketchbooks a year or so ago, they were messy, inconsistent, and i was unhappy with my work on almost every page. with practice, and lots and lots of “wasted” sketchbooks, i am now able to create a piece of work on each page that i’m happy with, my talents have grown and i’m really proud of my work, even if it’s just a simple sketch/idea. you will get there!! it takes time and practice!!
Sadly, that's how the school system works in most countries. Education is a right so it should be accesible to everyone regardless of their skills. That's the whole point of university, teaching. The bar shouldn't be this raised.
This is fascinating, but no real working artists' sketchbooks look like this. This is clearly a "sketchbook portfolio" which is super cool - as long as others aren't intimidated and discouraged by it. She's covering up pages she doesn't like, she's drawing perspective grids, going for an overall aesthetic and color palette, etc. Congrats on your admission!
Scarlet Hi thanks! I already replied to another of your comments treating as if I planned my sketchbook being fact. I actually didn’t plan it in the way you’re imagining, I was just going about it page by page!! The aesthetics and colour palette grew organically from the materials I had, subjects I drew and my underlying style. As for covering pages up, I only covered two, any other mistakes utilised post-its but as shown in the video, I’m very happy to show the errors underneath. I agree and want to be sure people understand that their sketchbooks don’t have to look a certain way at all! Sketchbooks can look however you want but that’s the same for me - I’m a “real working artist” and this is what my sketchbooks look like; please don’t dismiss that and act as if your interpretation of how I work is fact.
Wtf is a "real working artist"? Are you implying you're a "real working artist" and because your sketchbook happens to look different you feel entitled to dampening her parade? Cause that's the vibe I'm getting from your comment.
@@AlottaBoulchit What they`re referring to is that this is what you could call a showcase sketchbook compared to a drafting sketchbook. this is about showcasing your skills and less about actually practicing. A drafting sketchbook is a lot loser and way les refined because it`s about concept development and busywork. they are not supposed to be pretty so you get to fuck around freely without the fear of ruining a book. Most artists have both. They`re only pointing this out to make sure that people understand that this isn`t the level your mindless doodles have to have. this is polished work so don`t feel bad if your casual sketchbook doesn`t look like it`s on this level.
@@decimawallace3495 Then they should say as much with a quality comment like you did. Their comment instead comes off a bit vindictive with that "no real working artist" remark and the apparent fact they've already commented to others "calling out" the artist.

Really love the video! Definitely makes me want to draw A LOT right now and try all these different ideas. never thought to have actually just put another piece of paper in the sketchbook and use that instead if you mess up, or a sticky note. The sketchbook as well is just beautiful all around I dont think there was one piece I didn't like??? The color scheme,s all the different values, the porportions (correct or dramatic), different styles and ideas in general, even the sticky notes and seeped through colors really just makes beautiful imo.
Congratulations on getting accepted to CALARTS! And welcome to California! I lived there my whole life and my family is still there.
Amen!!
This!! I think if you looked at all the private sketchbooks she's probably filled to get this good, I doubt that most of them are this neat
when i began my sketchbooks a year or so ago, they were messy, inconsistent, and i was unhappy with my work on almost every page. with practice, and lots and lots of “wasted” sketchbooks, i am now able to create a piece of work on each page that i’m happy with, my talents have grown and i’m really proud of my work, even if it’s just a simple sketch/idea. you will get there!! it takes time and practice!!
So you need to be a fully developed and skilled artist in order to be accepted in art school?!
only with top schools
Calarts is there to get people ready for an industry career. There are other schools you can attend to teach you the basics
the school helps them to become industry ready. that's just the standard of CalArts.
Sadly, that's how the school system works in most countries. Education is a right so it should be accesible to everyone regardless of their skills. That's the whole point of university, teaching. The bar shouldn't be this raised.
This is just for the animation program💀 you already need to know the basics to start with animation
Awesome video! Keep it up :)
Lol ur more famous then her at this point in time
It is Almighty Allah, the lord of all worlds, who inspires and teaches art to people.
Cause that's the vibe I'm getting from your comment.
just because you're insecure and untalented dont mean you gotta be writing all that shit sus but yikes n e ways
Your art just mesmerized me, I swear I had stars in my eyes ! Thank you for doing this type of videos and for encouraging and inspiring people and their art at the same time!
It’s a little detail but I love how your nails match the sketchbook !! I adore the way you draw buildings, your style is lovely
Seeing a lot of my rural British upbringing in this made me smile so much. I moved from a small village to slap bang in the middle of Wolverhampton at the start of the pandemic, and I really miss nature and agriculture.
You're so talented!!
It is Almighty Allah, the lord of all worlds, who inspires and teaches art to people.
You had a TUBA of paint. 🤣🤣🤣. Great work!
I like how you take the real thing (the house at the beginning and the trees are the end) and how you do studies out of them. Gonna do that too!
Congratulations on getting accepted to CALARTS! And welcome to California! I lived there my whole life and my family is still there. If you like roller coasters and weird people you should check out Six Flags Magic Mountain. It's only about 10 min from your school. Also Los Angeles is only 45 min maybe an hour from your school. Hollywood is fun but it's dirty and you should leave before the sun goes down. Just sayin. Enjoy your time at school. I hope you will consider posting some of your school projects. Would love to see them!
wow such mature beautiful work! My favorite is the two page spread of the sheep in the road. What an enchanted life you must lead.
this has got the be the ultimate flex about having the coolest life ever
finally a sketchbook that doesn't mainly include drawings of people! shows drawing other 'normal' things like buildings and trees can be just as beautiful.
i've watched this video before over and over again and applying to calarts now, i'll like to say: WOW
everything you draw in your sketchbook is so personable and i can tell how much everything means to you and your passion for your life :] you're doing so successfully now, keep it up even if this comment is 2 years late!
one of THE best sketchbook tours i have ever seen !!
Your drawings are really breathtaking! You have a really unique style that I absolutely love!! Soooo goooood!!!!!
This is, hands down, one of the prettiest sketchbooks I've ever seen
These videos are seriously so very important to show the process of artworks. The sketches looks great 👍🏻
your art is so good hhhhhh. sketchbook tours always motivate me to keep drawing cause i can see what my art can eventually become. art isn't about pure talent, it's about lots and lots of practice! and that's why it motivates me, cause i always think about how much work actually goes into a single sketchbook.
Thank you so much for this. I'm a freshmen in high school and I've been focusing on making my art look professional and work on what cal arts would want when i can go to college. Your artwork is very beautiful
I’m a freshman in high school too! I’ve been watching loads of sketch book tours in hopes of finding some nice tips for creating a great looking sketch book so that when it comes time to my Junior and Senior years for sketch books, they’ll come easier to me and I won’t second guess myself quite as much. I’ve been trying new mediums out as well and I’m having loads of fun! If you find any neat tips would you mind sharing?
Everything I love about art and expression is in your style
You’re amazing! All your tips is really helpful and your work is inspiring and so is your attitude.
I must say, after all the years of using sketchbooks, this one is really creative! I'm def gonna bring this on
I never skip ads for every talented artists that I watch. They deserved it.
7:55 :0 OMG an actual person that knows field hockey is a thing! and that there isn’t only ice hockey and street hockey. and that hockey can be played with a ball not only a puck. 🏑
Oh we know it exist hockey is just better (jk jk)
As an Australian, field hockey is the only hockey I know. Ice rinks are very rare here. 😂
I played field hockey since my tenth
Regular hockey is pretty popular in Britain I don’t even know what street hockey is
I played field hockey a lot in primary school, we used tennis balls
I haven’t painted..or drawn in a very very long time and my goodness...this is SO SO inspirational...ugh. I love this.
me after spending 4 years only drawing anime girls: man i wonder why i can't draw perspective and anatomy like that
This hit way to close to home😔🖐🕳🏃
The intro and outro spread were so adorable and creative. They gave the book so much personality! You could probably bind and sell this whole book and people would be all over it.
Haven't drawn for months. I was wondering where my inspiration went.
Thank you! 😊
OMG!!! I LOVE the page with the blocky trees and the house in the background! It is so inspiring and cool to see how you used the shape of the brush to create a style based on it!
Congrats on getting into CalArts! You totally deserve it, and you art is AMAZING. I'm so happy for you! 💜
Your work is beautiful. You have such an accomplished sway between realistic and cartoonish. Lovely.
I also prefer starting my sketchbook from the back too, it’s less intimidating and usually it’s the work I feel most proud of. Also loovve your character studies💛
I tend to separate the sketchbook in two parts so there is original art and fanart in the back. Fanart relaxes me so I can move to with other Stuff
This doesn't feel like one person's sketchbook, you have so many styles its mindblowing
Imagine being this talented 😩 I can't even draw a cup
I can't even draw a circle properly without a compass. 😰😓😖😣😩😫
This feels so personal and lovely! There’s such an intimacy to the people watching sketches and I love the stuff about your home growing up. ❤️ Really really beautiful art too, congrats! 😊
Omg love your illustrations so much!!! That one of the houses where you used gouache is just amazing!!!
This seems like such a fun (and also exhausting) sketchbook to develop!! I look forward to seeing what else you end up working on!
I love this! I’d love a video on how you got into calarts as a foreigner.
For some weird reason i really love the vibe of your sketchbook and how you use post it notes i think that its really cool and creative. Finally my recommended isnt dry anymore
This is amazing. Looking at your art inspired me even more to work harder and learn!
Congrats!
my baby brother was completely enamored with your art, this video is 8-year-old approved!
Amazing!! I wish one day i will have a sketchbook like yours 😍😍😍
I find that I like the coloring of your landscapes and trees. I really like the green color that you used on the trees.
i dont even want to go to CalArts these sketchbooks are so satisfying thooo
10:30 That church actually looks like an LDS Temple. How I can tell is I think I see the golden stature of Moroni and his trumpet at the tip.
I finally got home from school so now I can watch this!
WHY AREN'T YOU MORE POPULAR YOU'RE SO TALENTED I'M CRYING
I thought is was so cool that you also did gesture drawings from one million dance crew videos~ My favorite people who dance are Hyojin, Mina, May J, and Gosh for right now
Anya, you are a true inspiration and you are so creative it's crazy. I am thinking of taking art into a professional level but I don't think I had the skills but after seeing this video you gave me so much inspiration
You're so talented! I absolutely adore your artstyle and your creativity! Keep doing what you're doing. :)
OMG i have no words!
Poses of people are amazing!
You are so talented, i am in love with your works!!
“Idk... it looked sassy” 😂😂💖
Very enjoyable tour. Thank you.
Some of it reminded me of reading Eloise with my mother as a kid.
Thank you
Congrats on getting into CalArts!! This video is soooo helpful! Thank you sooo much! I’m an art student in high school and this really guided me on what skills I might have to display while applying for college! Also I think you’re super talented and such an inspiration!❤️
Oh my god the square headed brush painting of the house and trees.... 😍😍😍😍😍
omg I had peacocks at my house too! Never seen anyone in England also have them lol. Jeffery (the peacock) was so evil to me I called him Jafar (from aladdin) behind his back :)
omg that page with the sheep on the road, is just so incredible! i'm blown away. such an unique style!!!
8:50 that one is so cool omg
i love love love every single page of your sketchbook! the video is great as well, it’s simple and straight to the point. your music is nice too. you inspire me to get back to doing art!thank you sooo much💗
damn she goes to boarding school and everything bro, she's there with the best art and the best supplies and I'm here with crayolas like 'yo I drew this awful cat' lol
I'm obsessed with the page of all the sheep crossing the road
I was playing earthbound while watching your video (awesome art by the way!)
noooooo! All my saves are deleted!
started college last year under a biology major but rekindled my passion for art this year. currently working on a sketchbook/portfolio for calarts either next year or the year after. this vid was a big source of motivation! thank you!
"Just some basic hands"
Hands be basic
The first page reminds me of the art style of a book i used to loveee
11:13 my sister would LOVE that car
jaw dropping! Especially the perspective work!
Not sure where you lived while growing up in the UK but I relate to almost all. The noisy hedgehogs, sheep’s for neighbours, beautiful Tudor and red brick architecture, Random things with my boarding house mates picturesque countryside walks, beautiful churches with steeples (in fact one of my local ones was named St. John’s too, which I think is a fairly common name anyway), fox and badger hunting on horseback with tons of beagles, huge admiration for a sport even though you were never the best at it (mine was rowing) and just so so sooo many other things.
Watching this makes me want to start a sketchbook of my own, but I’m neither very talented or good at sketching.
I love your sketchbook you are a great artist with a great imagination. Thank you it was absolutely amazing to see your awesome sketchbook.
