      TBF, Archive Of Our Own has a very robust tagging system for what is primarily a site for fanfiction. Then again, that might be why that site is so thorough with tagging. If we're talking about physical media though, it's best to stick with reviews as you've stated.

    0:38 Those trope tags she's talking about sounds like how fanfiction sites organize their stories. Say you want to look for a story set in Supernatural but don't want to see the brothers paired up, you can exclude "incest" (or maybe there's some sort of code for it, I can't remember) and you will only be shown stories without that tag. There'll only be like 3 of them, but you can do it.

She could EASILY fix her own issue by looking up a book she's interested in online and search for a review or discussion on it. She just wants to be spoonfed the content like some privileged baby instead of reading a couple of chapters and going "oh, this book isn't really interesting me. I'll drop it and read something else".
      She doesn't even have to spend money on a book she ends up hating, she can go to the fucking library and borrow as many books (ebooks as well) as she damn well pleases.

    The first woman is aware most books have a blurb on the back which usually tries to sell you on the book by setting the tone and hinting at the nature of the plot. Right? Like, it's a paragraph rather than a list of tags but it's there.

      @@nicolinrucker5181even if not on the book Amazon et al will have the blurb text.
      And authors who don't provide good blurbs don't sell unless established (Lee Child just needs to say "A Reacher novel" but most writers aren't at that level).
      Indie authors pay serious money on classes on writing better blurbs.

    • @Obergfreighter
      @Obergfreighter 5 місяців тому +19

      Honestly, most I find either have no blurb or it's as barebones as you can possibly imagine. Most of the time it's just quotes from reviews or people talking about the author or something and it's insanely frustrating, like those goddamn NetFlix descriptions for movies where it just lists cast members or writers, like, no, I wanna know what it's about first..
      On a semi-related note, the term "Don't judge a book by it's cover" annoys me. That was the case back when covers were blank or abstract, but nowadays that's literally what the cover is meant to do. I am absolutely supposed to judge a book by the art the writer or whoever chose to express the face of the story with. First impressions are important.

    I have no problem with the first one. Unless you're a speed reader, reading a novel is a massive investment of time. Life is too short and there are too many things to do to waste 10 to 15 hours on a book that you are not interested in and could easily be avoided if it had tags. I read every day but almost everything i read is hundreds if not thousands of years old. The basic contents are well known even before I start reading. Also there’s no such thing as “free health care”. It’s all paid for one way or another. I live in Romania and they tax our income for health insurance. But when you get to the point where you need it, the services are VERY low quality, they schedule you for procedures weeks or months too late and the doctors, who are paid from public tax money, will send you to their private clinics, where you’ll pay them again, through your nose, for even a basic investigations. Oh and if you are in need of paid sick leave, to mend after an operation or something, they look for every excuse not to give it to you. And even when you get it, you lose all the perks (like food tickets) and you only get a percentage of your base salary, depending on how grave your injury is.

    @0:16-.-I think this woman probably reads a lot of fan fiction, which as a matter of necessity, tends to rely heavily on creator applied tags. Many tags end up referring to various tropes and things people are warned from, which creates A culture where there are expectations built up around specific tags, and people develop favorite and least favorite tags. I do not think this is inherently A good or bad thing, but it is interesting/funny to see this applied to real books. I think it would be really interesting to really dig into the psychology of this phenomenon, since, whether people know it or not, everyone has favorite tropes, since tropes are ultimately just common similarities between stories, and so everyone is going to have "that thing they really like seeing in stories", but no one likes to think of it like this because it's a very specific and superficial aspect of storytelling to focus on. But fanfic readers are very masked off about this, which I find incredibly interesting anthropologically.

    1:00 Mfer, the back of the book gives you a short summary of the first couple chapters. Are people seriously too illiterate to do that?
    Edit: I can't believe literature - even language - is unironically a "specialized" field now because of just how partitioned off every field is from each other. The mindset we have is, largely, "I don't need to know ____, I'm an accountant," for instance. It's the same reason people refuse to do anything other than the bare minimum at work, just more fundamental. So many people have retreated into their echo chambers and are now refusing to learn any words that aren't within that sphere of influence. I'm sure this can only have disastrous results.

      To be fair, a lot of books try to make themselves look "presentable" by not putting plot synopsis or premise content on the jacket anymore, just the title, AUTHOR'S NAME, and maybe an award or previous work, or a famous critic's praise.
