It visually looks pretty damn good and it plays extremely well.

I agree, I’m a fan of Sonic as a collective whole and I appreciate what every iteration of the franchise brings.
I don't care what others think, but the 'It's been Generations since I last seen you' is a great line, and you cannot convince me otherwise.

I’m gonna be honest. Instead of calling it the meta era or whatever era the fandom calls them, I call each era from Sonic’s English voice actor. I feel that when there’s a new sonic VA, they each represent the eras of sonic.
Ryan Drummond was Sonic in the Adventure series and Heroes so it’s called the drummand era, Jason Griffith voiced Sonic from Sonic X to Black Knight during the dark era so it’s the Griffith era, and Roger Craig Smith has been sonic from free riders to Sonic Racing so Meta era is the Smith era.
Even the original classics in the 90s I call it the classic era, since it was the very beginning of sonic.
That’s the kind of alternative I would prefer to describe each era of the franchise.

@@codered1132 i think its the peak, as in consistent quality. Basically on the level of the classic games, While with dark age and modern, theres some ups and downs. So yes it was peak along with classic games, just not peak as in gameplay wise

I like the meta era because it let us play as Super Sonic in regular levels and not be restricted to just the final boss.
Umm you do know that the Sonic Riders trilogy let's you play as Super Sonic in regular levels right?
Edit:Oh and Sonic R, Sonic Shuffle and Sega & All Stars Racing let you play as him in the regular levels.

I want a super sonic boss fight but also wanting to play as super sonic in the regular levels it ether should be like generations where after the boss fight you can play as super sonic in the regular levels or like in the classic games where after you collect all of the emeralds you can play as super sonic in the regular levels then use it in the final boss fight
To be fair with Generations’ story. It was just a Tribute to all of Sonic’s achievements throughout the years, so The simple story was not bad, at least to me.
true but wish added they just a little more to the story like give the extended cast a little more dialogue and it can do this thing where after you complete a level the characters say callbacks to previous adventures and right before you head to the final boss the characters reflect on how far they come

@@baylordiamond8819 The Boom games. and the length of the thing. Dark Age had what 15-20 games in 10 years? That's insane. from 2013 to now we had LW and Forces mainline wise. Every Boom game sucked except Fire and Ice, which is really unfortunate. Mania was lovely though.
Adventure remakes would've made this era alot more awesome, but y'know. Boom happened. and then they were cancelled.

Part of the reason I played Sonic was due to the story. It is the lack of a planned story that makes this era of Sonic just feels wrong. If they were to work on the stories a bit better along with the gameplay, then I think this would be a great era to look back on.
Most the time I play these games I'm watching something at the same time so I'm not really paying attention to the story (seeing the war scene in Forces with no context was unbelievably hilarious)
I don't like the whole 'era' thing, I prefer to label them by the decade, but yeah, the 'Meta Era' had some great games!
I'll always prefer the 2000s Sonic games (or Dark Era, whatever), but basically every Sonic game is great in their own ways!

I love how 2000’s Sonic games have messages about not holding on to the past, when that’s all that dark age fanboys have been doing.
A lot of people tend to mention that Sonic had a more 'caring' and 'prestigious' personality in the Dark Era of the games compared what his personality changed towards Meta and simply taking a look at it can tell you that it seems to be more sadly true than ever, atleast from a normal look.
In Colors, although he did have a simple personality of joking around a lot, still felt like he changed for not a whole lot good. Lost World and Forces (and parly a bit of Gens) were the only other games in this era with a story that showed a lot of Sonic's personality in the way Ken Pontac and Warren Graff saw it, and I agree with you about the Meta Era on all of the others things about it (i haven't played much of Dark Era games as of right now). I think his personality is a good factor on the quality of the games because albeit that gameplay takes most of the demand, Sonic is the titular character of the games and his character itself is what represents the presentation of the games. I think Generations out of the other 3 actually might of best represented his personality because there even though was little shown of him and all, he did was fight back for his friends that were captured by time eater, as first shown in the opening picnic scene, the game is in this whole celebratory theme because of the games way to celebrate the 30th anniversary.
I think his Lost World personality was a bit rushed on it's end but you could of saw the attempt, like Sonic trying to quickly escalate the situation where he "wasn't too fast to save his little buddy".
Sonic Forces, somehow misses this whole thing. The cutscene before he gets "captured", shows that he seems to care for everyone like he should, but after that, and a skip of events through, Sonic is seemingly "tortured" and then when cutscenes play with him, he once again starts showing his Colors and Lost World personality with the meta jokes.
I didn't hate it because IMO Roger voiced Sonic great, but he definitely didn't get the script great from those writers and I honestly think that if he was voicing a script that was reminiscent of dark era Sonic then he would have been appreciated more.
Sonic Meta Games are great but I felt like his personality went down a notch and overall went inferior towards the light-headed and serious tone Sonic from the 2005 games.

I was born in 2005, although my first Sonic Game was Black Knight, I've always enjoyed the meta era apart from Forces. It's sad to see games like Colours get hated despite being good games.

Flicky Era (1991-1997)
Chao Era (1998-2002)
Experimental Era (2003-2009)
Wisp Era (2010-2019)
Cyberspace Era (2022-????)
It rolls off the tongue and can diminish circle-jerking and bullying fans of certain eras.
I like Sonic Colors everything just ties into each other well with the atmosphere, music, and the levels. I might be delusional or something but I think it's because I played the ds version first.
Edit: I forgot to mention the dialogue. In the DS version it's alright. In the Wii version I really hate it.

If you are counting sonic mania as a meta era game you have to count sonic boom games and sonic 4 episode 1 and 2 as well

as a mario fan, i always think the main selling of mario isn't the story. I do love fast paced action platformers like sonic. But sometimes playing simple platformers like mario is really relaxing

Honestly, Sonic having more story and also more attitude as a character is what drove me to him instead of Mario.
Story is very important in a game for me. If the gameplay is bad but the story is good, I'd rather play that than a game with bad story but good gameplay, (Sonic Generations as an exception cuz that game wasn't really story-driven anyway.)
Colors, Lost World and Forces had good concepts (Multi-planetary setting and life, Parkour and war-zone respectively) but the writing is so bad I cannot overlook it.
That being said, I don't think its "bad" to like the Meta-Era games, I personally just think those games aren't as interesting as the games in the Adventure- and Dark-Era, which are my favorites. (I can't help it that I love Shadow, 06, Secret Rings, Black Knight, Chronicles!)
The thing about saying "x era is good and "x is bad" is the eras themselves are VERY vague, and have a lot of overlap between them. From what I've seen, everyone classifies Sonic eras differently, and there's a lot of overlapping categories. You mentioned Unleashed as part of "the Dark Era", but its tone, reduced chaarcters, comedic take on Eggman, and boost gameplay easily put it much closer to the Meta era for me, even if it itself isn't Meta, and Black Knight, despite coming after it, was easily more in line with the Dark Era, so I tend to take it as part of it. So really, it all comes down to judging individual games, stories, tones, gameplay, aeathetics, voice actors, among other things.
Among some era divisions I've seen in the fandom:
-Classic Era: mainly from Sonic 1 to S3&K, may or may not include...
-Saturn Era: can you call it an era if there were practically no mainline games? Xtreme's cancellation is the equivalent of 06/Forces for me, and there were mainline attempts with Chaotix, 3D Blast and Sonic R, but none really made it. Also, has a distinctly different aesthetic from previous era that approaches the following era, despite people reducing Classic's artstyle to S1/2/CD
-Adventure/Dreamcast era: y'know, modern design, gameplay, cast and all. Includes SA1 and SA2, and arguably up to Heroes depending on who you ask. It may or may not include...
-Dark Era: separated due to the drop in quality, change in tone and change in voice cast. Mainly revolves around Shadow, 06, Sonic 4 and the storybook series, but the extent of it depends on the person. Some take it as starting from Heroes, others from Shadow. Some say it ends with 06, some say it ends with 06 but leaves remnants in the Storybook series and Sonic 4s, while others include Unleashed and up to Back Knight and everything in-between. May or may not overlap with...
-Boost era: Sonic-centered games with a reduced cast, simplified and focused storytelling, and a very specific stylished visual aesthetic, as well as a new cast a few games in. Era revolves around the trio of Unleashed/Colors/Generations, but take it as starting as far back as the Rush series (only those games specifically). May or may not include...
-Meta Era: further simplified stories with lower stakes, "self-referential" humor, some attempt at basic character development and a general disregard for continuity. Some say it starts with Colors and the change in voice and writing staff, while some believe that Colors/Gens only had a few traits here and there and that the era really started with Lost World, with a much more childish appeal, change in aesthetic, simplified gameplay, less mature characters in general, and a focus on putting out poliahed-looking, solid games (independent of quality or their received reviews).
Personally, I like to think of it as there being three main eras (Classic, Adventure and Boost) and that the other ones (Saturn, Dark and Meta) are either separate eras after each one, eras within the previous 3, or eras in-between the previous 3 with lots of overlap (where do you pit things like Sonic Pocket Adventure or early 3D like Sonic R? What about games like Unleashed or Rush? They're overlap between both eras and what I'd like to call "transition games")
Agree all eras have their ups and down however the only thing that bothers is that ever since unleashed they started to replace sonic friends with cheap knockoffs which made them feel useless.

i find it interesting that the distaste for the dark era is due to the majority of the games game-play while for the meta era the distaste goes for the stories. which is why i can agree with it because when i complain about the meta era it's never directed towards the game-play, but rather the stories and much more importantly the characters (which got me into the series in the first place). i only started getting interested in how a game plays long after i was already a sonic fan.
I really don't enjoy playing colors or forces tho. And mania is ok, but I'd rather have Sonic3&knackles for the classic gameplay.

@@dgsf9444 Конечно не во всём согласен, но во многом он прав. Игры дарк-эры тоже изначально сильно хэйтили, а сейчас мнение фанатов о многих играх поменялось. Меня в любом случае радует, что чувак этим роликом старается сбавить обороты хейта в сторону мета-эры, ведь многие игры критикуют очень незаслуженно. Конечно, критиковать плохие вещи нужно, но критика должна быть обоснованной. А когда хейтят ту же манию просто за то, что там многие уровни это переделанные старые, и при этом игнорируют огромную кучу вещей, которые в игре сделаны на высшем уровне, это такое себе.

@@icee1683 Well a good story makes you more attached to a game and makes the game stand out, thats why Lostworld is a fun time but very forgettable, and Colors is creative in theming but no one theorizes on that game because the story is shallow.

I did enjoy the sonic games from that era that I played. I didn't play all of them but sonic colors for example was great. I personally am someone who is more inclined to the story than any other element in a game so it wasn't a plus for me but it was fun gameplay wise. I just don't go back to it much especially because there is not really a story I can dig into. But of it's to experience some of the stages again I might. So I get you on the front of playing for the gameplay. For everyone it's different but it is fun and that may be the only reason why some people come back to them.

You make lots of great points in this video, I didn't like the direction the story went in for the games of this era of Sonic, but there were a lot more quality games from the "Meta Era" of Sonic. Heck, 3 of my favorite games in the whole franchise came from this era of Sonic, and to me, I vastly prefer a better game rather than a better story. There were probably only 3 or 4 stinkers this era for Sonic games. I'm pretty dang sure that in a few years, people are gonna start saying stuff like "Lost World was great" or stuff like that. Give it time.

IMO, the meta era had a tremendous start with Sonic Colors, Generations & somewhat Lost World (if you go past the story IMO & not to mention the dlc to lost world as well was fun too). But then it just went to absolute crap afterwards with Sonic Boom & then Forces IMO with Sonic Mania holding us over before plummeting. Things would have been worse if mania hadn’t been announced along with Forces.
I also think the rush and rivals games saved sonic from the crash of 06 and shadow

Sonic Colors and the racing games were my favourites of the meta era. I grew up with the Dark and Meta era.

Ok mania generation and colors were pretty good but the quality of sonic games started to die of around lost world and I knew from their we would probably get something like forces in story telling and gameplay

This needed to be said I like every game from the meta era

Eh, I feel like it was a rip off of the adventure games and the level design was pretty lacking at times
I agree. Colors and Generations are amazing, Lost World not as good but still good, Mania is great, Forces can piss off, and the racing games were fun. Hell I even liked Sonic 4
For those who didn’t like the more lighthearted direction of the Sonic series during the 2010s, there’s something you got to keep in mind. After the 2006 game flopped, Sega aimed to reinvent Sonic to make him more contemporary. According to Simon Jefferies of Sega of America, 2007’s Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games was the first of this period of reinvention of Sonic.

Yes story is ONE of the things that makes sonic different from mario and yes stories are ONE of the reason i like sonic better than mario
Having stories doesn’t really make it any better. Mario isn’t made for story. Even then, we have the RPGs, and Oddessy.

Yeah, but most stories in Sonic that aren’t (SA1&2, Unleashed and BLK) suck. At least with Mario they ditched the course clear with more sandbox levels. Sonic ever since 2005 hasn’t even competed to the quality of Mario. The only game to do that was Unleashed. Colors and generations second. Mario has enough confidence in itself to at least stick to the regular gameplay and still be fresh. Sonic games need to take a page from Mario and realize that consistency is important to being recognizable. And I’m a Sonic fan.

My only gripe with boost Sonic is... The level design is too play it safe. Not too much stuck out. It was mostly just ooga booga go fast.

I still only really enjoyed Generations from the Meta Era, and only really from a gameplay standpoint. But Colors was fine, and Lost World had potential gameplay-wise.
We don’t talk about Forces.
EDIT: Forgot to mention how much I love Mania, but I don’t really count it as a Meta era game.

I will say that yes, we have had some really great games this era. However, it does feel like it came at a price. That being Sonic's character. While I enjoyed a good amount of games this era something always felt off. I felt like I wasn't playing as the character I felt inspired by to do literally everything I'm doing now. Just a shell of him. Which is why this era has been rough in that aspect. Outside of a few exceptions like generations (mainly do gameplay, not story) and mania, sonic has not been Sonic. Hell any of the characters haven't been themselves.
For me, Colors DS & Generations were the only Meta Era Games that the characters were in character in the English Version.

hey games like sonic heroes, shadow the hedgehog, sonic riders, and zero gravity these were my childhood and when i look back on them i see them as where sonic games were really at their best and makes me wish i can go back in time and play them all over again
Funny thing I played Secret Rings,Rush Adventure,Unleashed,Black Knight and Colors as a kid not having even the slightess percent of awareness of the Dark Era nor the Meta Era
Sonic Lost world was my first 3d sonic game (I'd only played sonic rush before) and it was a pretty fun experience despite it's flaws, kinda shocked me when I started getting into fandoms and realized how much people hated lost world

@@GetShrekd ......alright good point. But, I don't think alot of those people should be taken seriously, more specifically the ones that like to pretend those games are perfect masterpieces. I mean I like some of those games and all but they are not perfect masterpieces like those people pretend they are. Even if they "tried", or had "ambition" or whatever. I like Black Knight, I like Secret Rings but at the end of the day they are still flawed and I would much rather be playing games like Colors and Generations, any day.
Heroes is Underrated
I like pretty much all meta era games aside from Sonic 4 episode 1, and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, but I guess that isn't saying much since I like almost every game in the series
This bunch of games, Generations , Lost World, Rise of Lyric, Forces and Colors ( my actual fisrt Sonic game), made me a Sonic fan during my childhood and defined my likes now that im at university. Try them after became more critical about what I enjoy about Sonic, really make me have a very special love for them, despite the evident damage they done to the franchise and the fanbase, and despite everyone seems to hate them to death.
Admittedly, I do wish when the games had more stories, but I still love colours and mania. I can’t really have an opinion on the others since I’ve never played them, (except for forces) but I do hope to get my hands on generations eventually.
Also the reason why mania is often ignored is because it was directed by fans, and was supervised by sonic team.
I really appreciate this video nonetheless. You made some great points at the end. I wish we had more hopeful fans like you.

I feel like the story doesn’t have make the game like you said, for Colors and Generations the gameplay definitely carries the game and that’s cool cause it’s fun. But for the other games of the era the writing sticks out like a sore thumb to me. I for one was very interested to see what the story would hold for every Sonic game before the meta era. Forces and TSR are just so dumbed down and out of character. The games here aren’t horrible or unfinished but they’re not anything special. Racing transformed was miles better than TSR, but even then Riders beat out both of them by a a lot cause of the awesome gameplay and story (I can’t believe you didn’t enjoy them honestly)
I don’t think the whole era is bad, but I do think there were a lot of missteps taken in Sega’s attempt to try to make Sonic some super squeaky clean for the kids type thing. Doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom or avant-garde, but just some substance would be nice
When you said Colors' story had so much potential, I thought of the DS version. That version honestly lives up to that potential in my opinion
I really agree with what you said. Games are made for fun and everyone is free too enjoy and play whatever game they want. For example, I really like playing Sonic Forces ( it's my first ever Modern Sonic game).
