    SA1 is in my opinion the only 3D Sonic game that Perfectly Translate 2D to 3D and it's odd that SA1 level design foumal hasn't returned in any shape or form.
    SA2 did keep the momentum base game play but all levels were only suited for 1 or 2 characters compared to SA1 having almost every character being able to be in every level, with there own unique gameplay styles.

    Don’t forget the fact that you can basically stop your aerial movement completely by pressing the action button after you jump, whether you’ve spin dashed or not. This is sort of a means of “backtracking” if you realize you made a mistake with your movement.
    You literally have an on/off button when it comes to the movement in this game. And it’s part of what makes Sonic Adventure feel so generous to play, in addition to the level design you touched upon.
    Man, I love this game.

    No one says that just cause SA1 has better level design means that it's better than SA2. Its not.
    They're both great for different reasons. If we got SA3 and had all of the great qualities from both games combined, we'd have the perfect sonic game.

    It was a level design that was not holding Square, X, Y or Shift to boost thorugh enemies, but it was a level design of choice.
    Really disappointed SEGA only used this style mostly in Lost World and one time in Sonic Forces (mortar canyon), it's better than nothing but i mean, still, the levels are so good and work in the boosting formula which is not a common opinion, but looking at the mods (especially the forces one) they seem to work just as fine.

    Sonic: controls smoothly.
    Level design: Fluid, creative and beautiful.
    Camera: BRRRRZZZZTT-
    I feel if the stages were blown up a little bit so sonic wasn't slamming into walls all willy nilly and they fixed the camera, this game would be perfect.
    But all the amazing stages - the goofy pinball casinopolis, the snowboarding, the orca, the vertical skyscraper running? Everything was beautiful.
    And so many niches in the game design where multiple characters could play the same maps in different ways.

    As an average boost enjoyer, I have something to say (I played SA2 and Unleashed for the first time 2 weeks ago, so: I have no nostalgia for any of them):
    I have the feeling that the boost gameplay is meant to be the extremes of Sonic, let me explain: I didn't die as many times in SA2 than in Unleashed and this is due to the fact that, the game has a slow pace, you have time to react and each obstacle won't make you die but they will slow you down.
    -With the boost it's the opposite, the game has a REALLY fast pace, you don't react because you just don't have time,instead you have to experience, die, and then come back knowing what you will face.
    The boost in my opinion provides at the same time the most adrenaline but also feels the most unfair but when you played a game with this much adrenaline and moments where your heart just stops beating, adventure style feels soo empty, like I felt like I was playing a Mario game with some different mechanics and some automated speed sections.
    Anyway, let me guys know what you think

    • @kalync.8232
      @kalync.8232 3 роки тому

      Yeah it'd be too much to except a person whose started off with boost to find the value in adventure. Especially since Sonic Team makes Sonics only value his speed. I find the freedom and diversity in the adventure games so much more appealing then blasting through a linear level that does all the work for you.

    Imo, I sorta agree as skipping can be fun sometimes. I really prefer the classic scheme of speed, it coming from momentum and player improvement. While there is momentum in adventure, I dont think its as pleasing or satisfying as the classics (which is really my main gripe). Im also not a big fan of the speed panels due how it feels as if the game takes away control from you and really just speed you up. I know why its there, but I think they could've find an alternative solution so the levels wouldnt break. I think Sonic 3 levels are a perfect example of what makes a good sonic level as it has a nice blend of platforming and highspeed action. When it comes to the prototype of Windy Valley, I think they were in the right step of level design. Just imagine how satisfying it would be to play Windy Valley Beta with physics that are very similar to the classics. Thats not to say Adventure is a bad game, because oh boy, I love it to death. Its just the fact that I think the jump to 3D wasnt fully realized.

    IMO Sonic Adventure was the best 3D Sonic, and it is still one of the only *good* 3D Sonic games. I'm not sure how well it's aged at this point because I haven't played it in decades, but I have to imagine with all its glaring bugs and the extra characters' levels, two things that were forgiven to some extent back then but I don't know how forgivable they are now, it probably hasn't aged the best. I should go back and try to replay it sometime. Better yet, I think it's time for a Sonic Adventure remake. And a Skies of Arcadia Legends remaster. Sega, are you listening?

    I hate the spin dash in SA1. Intentional or not, it's extremely overpowered and massively overshadows everything else the game has to offer. The SA1 spin dash would be more fitting in a spinoff game; it absolutely is not and should not be a staple of the Adventure formula. Sure, spin-dash jumping lets you go faster. But it's used to skip every other mechanic in the level. At that point, you're no longer playing a Sonic game; you're playing golf. There is no room for style or flair when all you do is spin-dash jump past all the interesting elements of the level. Sonic is about going fast AND looking cool while doing it. There is nothing stylish about spin-dash jumping.
    That's not to say that the mechanic can't be fun. Combined with dynamic terrain like the tipping rocks in Red Mountain, it can definitely be interesting. But for that same reason, it needs a game ENTIRELY based around it, and it shouldn't become the core of Sonic's identity.
    People keep trying to say that SA2's linearity is a bad thing and they really couldn't be more wrong. It does a way better job of making you feel as cool as Sonic. To this day I still consider Metal Harbor the peak of Adventure level design. A clean A-rank in Metal Harbor is some of the most fun I've had in any Sonic game. Linearity is only bad when it's easy or lacks optional difficulty (e.g. "boost to win"). SA2 gives you plenty of chances to show your skill with trick ramps, timed lightspeed dashes, and other timing challenges.

    • @kalync.8232
      @kalync.8232 3 роки тому

      That comes to how the player wants to experience the game. I never used the spin dash, 1. I like running in the open areas and the obstacles and 2.*I sucked at it*. If people want to dash past everything then that's their buisness.

    • @Matthasnocuts
      @Matthasnocuts  3 роки тому +2

      Level design in a video game is completely built off of how the character that you are playing moves. Sonic's spindash is a core component to enjoying the level design at it's fullest potential. That's why I talk about the spindash a lot in the video, the physics of the spindash within the level design makes it an overall great experience.

    • @Beastmd
      @Beastmd 3 роки тому +2

      @@Matthasnocuts but the way you talk about it makes it seem like if you were to mod SA1 physics into SA2 or heroes then you’d be saying the same thing: praising Sonics ability to spindash over obstacles. I feel like it’s comparable to talking about mario odyssey’s level design but your main point being the cool jumps you can do with cappy and the coins they have hidden sometimes. Instead I feel like you should be talking about the visuals, puzzles, enemies, scripted segments, and routes when coming to a levels design, and go through what makes each sonic stage fun/great.

    As a Sonic Adventure Speedrunner, it's super funny to do so many skips, like you can even beat Casinopolis in under 10 seconds if you wanted to. And I know it seems like there aren't many skips in Windy Valley, but there's a skip that can let you skip the entire section after the Tornado.
