How Serbian Orthodox Christmas Differs From Christmas in the USA
- January 7th is Serbian Orthodox Christmas and for some other Orthodox followers in this part of the world. You greet folks with " Hristos se rodi" or " He has been born". How does their celebration differ from what I was used to in the USA?

I married a Serbian, he moved to the USA so we could be together. Serbian men are intelligent, thoughtful, and loyal. He misses Serbia and will be going back for a visit this year. I wish I could go, but finances are not allowing me to go.😥😭 Best of luck to you Charles, and your family ❤️🙏
Thanks a lot for such a nice words 🇷🇸🤝🇺🇸
Biggest difference is: western celebrate it as simple holiday, and here its actually about Jesus being born, its religious.
With a lot of pagan tradition related to fertility and harvest
@@daca8395 Christianity hijacked some pagan tradition. Simple as that. I don't see any problem in that as long as people are in good faith.
@@zeljkoljiljak7256 As long as you heart no one, do as you want!
Nisu nastali u vakuumu. Recimio gradnja hramova, nošnja, đavo... Nešto od mitraizma i tako. No, ništa to ja ne smatram za loše. Loše može biti zloupotreba religije.

Serbs are Christians and have suffered throughout history. There is no hatred in their genetic code and religion. We are only interested in justice and honesty. Freedom is our greatest asset. That is why we are not understood by people from the west. In the west, values are slightly disrupted due to material and interest. Peace of God for all.

Always good to see you Charles. Enjoy your time with your friends. One year ago today I made a comment on your channel that forever changed my life. A stranger from Serbia replied and we began a conversation. He and I have talked nearly every day since. An amazing friendship developed that grew into love. Thank you Charles for everything you do for Serbia and Serbian people.God bless you.
I could not agree more with your assessment, Charles. While I'm no expert on American Christmas culture, coming from a a West European country (Holland, arguably a "light" version of the USA in this context), my experience with Serbian Orthodox Christmas are very similar. Last night I again had this privilege, to witness large groups of people standing around street fires, socializing, drinking and singing to traditional (and modern) folk music, from 6 until way after midnight, at minus a few degrees below zero for sure. It no doubt will be different in other locations (in Serbia), but here (Novi Sad, near Betanija) it was quite an amazing spectacle to behold. It never stops to amaze me, to see how during this night whole neighborhoods come together. Even people who otherwise would not mingle, without incidents or animosity. As if all these typical powder kegs, both young and old, collectively lost their typical short fuses, if only for a night. It really is amazing. Also hard to explain, to anyone who never witnessed it. Charles, I'd say we're both very privileged with our experiences in this beautiful country.
EDIT: One thing I'd like to add. While clearly not commercial and obviously religious in origin, these event might actually be most about tradition and good values, more even than about the religious aspect per se. I personally know several non-religious people, even ones usually actively opposing anything religious, that participate in these events with the same energy and good intentions as all the religious folk. I'd argue that even in general, the polarization between religious and non-religious is less than in many other countries. Not sure if that's true or why, but it's what I personally experienced (and quite contrary to what I expected at first; probably not helped by anti-Serbian propaganda at home).
Yup, you are right. Half of my friends are not religious, but we all enjoy Christmas or Slava.
I hope to be more spiritual when i get older to keep the tradition alive as it is now
The tradition. I don't believe in God/s, but I respect people believes in It and I really love to see traditions that all sort of believing brings with It, all over the Globe. So, I grew up with stories how Christmas Eve (Badnje veče) should look like, as well as (Christmas) Božić, Slava ( worshipping the family Saint) etc., I grew up watching that all, every year. And I appreciate It. Really brings some special energy and joy. 😊
@@vansvakepameti9907 I'm not religious either, and obviously didn't grew up with all this. However, I've been to at least several dozen Slave and I totally agree about the special energy and joy. Even more so for Badnje veče i Božić. To my surprise, I've never experienced a single disapproval, friction, or animosity, for not being religious myself. If anything, people would take the opportunity to show their generosity and the good values of their traditions (be it attributed to themselves, their culture, their religion, or a varying mix of those). What also has surprised me, is that Orthodox Christianity (at least from my experience in Serbia) turned out far more tolerant than I expected it to be. I think that Orthodox Christianity easily gets a bad rep abroad, and often for all the wrong reasons. First, it's usually associated with Russia, which instinctively spells "wrong" for most people from NATO-aligned countries (propaganda is real and still very much alive). Maybe even more, the word "orthodox" itself associates with strictness, rigidity, dogma and intolerance, especially in the English language. Ironically, I've experienced just the opposite in Serbia. In Serbia I learned to be more tolerant and accepting towards religion myself, and appreciate it's good sides instead of being blinded and angered by its bad ones. I call that a remarkable achievement (by Serbia, not me), considering how stubborn I am.

Mr Charles you are such a great man Православни брат
Serbia MUST give you at least an honorary citizenship! You may be an American ( met quite a few of them, most are honest hardworking people), but your mind and soul is becoming more and more Serbian as time goes by.
What I’ve notice from being a Serb living in America is that Americans tend to celebrate more of the holiday aspect such as presents and decorations. I’ve been to American households where the people don’t even believe in God yet celebrate just for the presents. Serbs on the other hand follow Christmas tradition that has been passed down for generations. To us, the birth of Christ and celebrating his birth with family is the most important. For example, on Christmas Eve, Serbs light a fire from branches and leaves of an oak tree symbolizing what baby Jesus was kept warm with. We take an ice cold shower symbolizing the cold weather he was born in and water he was washed with. Don’t get me wrong, there are Americans who care about the birth of Jesus but I’ve witnessed more who don’t..
Hvala❤
This man is my idol. My favorite American. It's amazing how he as a foreigner understands so many things about this country, better than many Serbs themselves.
Charles, I want to welcome you to our Catholic Orthodox Church. The second biggest Christian church in the world. Your fellow Americans Tom Hanks and George Clooney are also Orthodox Christians :)
@Rüdiger Weissmann Correct. It's a Catholic Church with elements of orthodox Christianity, which means it has withheld many original customs like standing in the church all the time during the liturgy, long fasting with strict rules, not having one leader of the whole church community etc. Orthodox Church considers that pope has taken much power and that the people see him as a second to God, which shouldn't be the case because there's only one God and all the Church people no matter the hierarchy should all be in the same line below God. They do have patriarchs but they do not have security and special cars, people do not greet them on the streets, patriarchs are simply not celebrities like pope is for many people. Christmas in Orthodox Church is not a synonym for presents, shopping, movies, firework etc. It's a synonym for Jesus and sharing love and peace with other people.
@milster Yes they have luxury cars but not special vehicles like bullet proof cars or that pope-mobile pope is driving on the streets and waving to the people. Pedophilia is a very very rare thing in Orthodox churches, although there are cases like Kachavenda's. It is much more common in Catholic Church.
@@petemitchell9996 Oh please get your facts correct. - it was one Catholic Church that split during the schism in 1054. It split because of internal politics between the Bishops of the Church. Remember Bishops were not elected clergy they were men of power and essentially politicians. The Christian church was governed by the heads (patriarchs) of the five major episcopal sees of the Roman Empire: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem. The Pope is the Bishop of Rome and nothing more, the other major force was Constantinople and with the Islamic Caliphate conquering territory in the middle east the Bishops of Alexandria Antioch and Jerusalem were preoccupied. From there it was simply a power struggle for influence. So even in 1054 we were being screwed by politicians. The Greek Catholic Church of which Croatia had numerous churches follow the Eastern Rites but recognise the Pope as their Patriarch, as do Ukrainian Catholics. For the Catholic church nationality is not derived from your religion, it doesn't matter what country you come from you are simply Catholic. The orthodox church is independent with no central structure but they do consider the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople as the Head of their church. Even today we can see conflict between the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Montenegrin Church over ownership of churches and land. A Macedonian Orthodox Church that the Serbian Church won't recognise. SO you can see - we still fill religion with politics.
