Prince wrote this song, Sinéad made it a worldwide hit. Sinéad had 10 brilliant albums. Unfortunately she was physically and sexually abused by her mother. Her mother would make her sleep in the backyard in a shed. When Sinéad turned 19 she was ready to try to forgive her mother but sadly her mother died in a car crash before she got the chance. That’s why the song is personal to her. The wee bit about all the flowers that you planted in the backyard, all died when you went away. She shaved off her hair in protest of the way people look at beautiful women. Since she knew that she was beautiful, she tried to erase it by shaving off her hair. She wanted to be recognized by her music and not her looks.
Great reaction. This was recorded back in 1990 in Chile for a concert sponsored by Amnesty International when Chile got it's democracy back after decades from a dictatorship. Long Live Sinead O'connor. She was an Amazing performer and human being. Thank u Ireland and Our sincerest love and thanks for giving us this incredible and timeless woman. 🤘
For all that Prince wrote & first performed the song, it was pretty much unnoticed until Sinéad performed it, and meant every word, sung it with every fibre of her being, in the music video tears rolled down her face and I think everybody that saw it cried with her. It remains one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded and Sinéad was a beautiful soul, an activist for the causes she believed in and that deserved her activism, she remains loved and held in high, high regard. 🌸

Sinead was a strong Irish activist who had TV networks scared to air her. Finally, SNL hired her, where she ripped a picture of the Pope to pieces. She was banned and her career slowed greatly. Terrific Lady in many ways. RIP
My favorite Sinead story is that when she was first signed with a record company, they wanted her to adopt the “look” that so many female artists either choose or are forced to take on (sexy, pop princess) which is fine if that’s who you are but it definitely wasn’t Sinead. So she shaved her head. I love that she had the conviction and the balls to defy them like that. Thanks for another fun reaction.
It is so hard to believe that she did not write this song, because she delivers it so personally and emotionally. She did connect with one line- “all the flowers that you planted, mama, in the backyard, all died when you went away”. She thinks of her own mother at that line, and actually sheds a tear in the official video around that point as well.
As a civil rights, activist, and Campaigner against child abuse by religious orders, she was warned that she would lose her career. She chose to fight for the victim s . when.the music industry blocked her, she said "I chose the path of speaking for the silent victims"
She is absolutely amazing and she did have a very tortured soul here on earth but she never gave up! She was what the world needed and she gave her all as a musician and as a human being. She’s from Ireland 🇮🇪 & totally worth going down the rabbit hole. She does come from a very troubled background. Her mother was abusive in every sense of the way. She was controversial for standing up to the Pope live on SNL, regarding the sa in the Catholic church. She also did not want to be marketed in a “sexual” way. This is why she cut her hair & refused to dress provocative. She wanted to be known for her music. She wrote a letter to Miley Cyrus telling her to beware of the industry sexualizing her….you can find said letter online. Some of my favorite songs of hers: *Three Babies, *Emperor’s New Clothes, *The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance, *Black Boys On Mopeds, *I Am Stretched On Your Grave, *Mandinka *This Is To Mother You….. gosh, so many more!
Sinéad (SHIN-aid - in Irish, an S followed by an I or E is aspirated as if there was an H after it). She was an amazing artist, a fantastic voice, full of raw power and exquisite control. A strong activist, someone who stood up to the establishment and lost most of her career over it, but did it anyhow. She struggled with mental health issues all her life. She has an amazing catalogue not only of modern music, but of Irish traditional tunes (The Foggy Dew with the Chieftains makes me cry every time).
How she tanked her career - on Saturday Night Live, she got up on stage, held up a picture of the Pope, and ripped it in two, on live TV. She was protesting the centuries of cover-ups of sexual abuse within the church. Now, decades later, things are finally coming out and being proven, and there are finally lawsuits and consequences, but back then (1992), there was a stranglehold on such prosecution. Also, this was a picture that her mother personally owned. Her mother abused her for years - so it represented lies and abuse. Brave, strong, symbolic. In 1991, she was nominated for four Grammys. She refused to attend or accept an award, in protest over the industry's focus on money over artistic value. She used her fame to speak up about abuse, human rights, racism, organized religion, and women's rights.

The music video for this is legendary, the camera stays on just her angelic face for the entire video as she sings. Simple and perfect. You know a woman's classically beautiful when her head's shaved bald and another woman notices how beautiful she is anyway. Hard to pull off, but she sure did. She was truly one of a kind.

Thank you from Ireland for your HEARTFELT reaction☘ We are mourning our beautiful Daughter Sinéad💔She was a force of nature with unmatched talent, but she was also very fragile. Please react to her live acapella performance of 'I Am Stretched On Your Grave' - a 17th-century Irish poem that she transformed with just her voice and a 'beat box' sample; She was 'keening' for our Country & it is pure perfection. (Keening is a traditional style of Ireland's culture and Sinéad was a Master of it.) The media and music industry cruelly shunned her for speaking THE TRUTH about the catholic abuse of innocent Irish children, including herself & she was eventually proven CORRECT - now an acknowledged fact globally. New subscriber here. I have been blessed to have seen Sinéad live about three times. The best voice I’ve ever heard. Shortly before her unortunate passing she released a memoir called Rememberings which is a beautiful read. I’d also highly recommend to watch the documentary Nothing Compares. It’s so, so sad she passed away so shortly after her son’s Shane suicide which completely broke her. She was one of the bravest artists to have walked this earth. A hero, a helper and a healer ❤
At a certain point and time, she had the world in her hands and it came tumbling down in one night, in an SNL music performance. She had mental issues all of her life and was a commited activist and still was untill her death. I think at the time, she was sadly misunderstood by the fans and booted out by the medias, but she still remains an important figure of the 80`s era

I love that you picked up on so much by this performance. You are pretty spot on in your observations of her. I recommend reacting to her live performance of Mandinka at the Grammys. It’s a fantastic performance. She did have a lot of pain and suffering in her life. She has said she had really healed through her music. Sadly, her life never got any easier. She was an amazing activist, incredibly, intelligent, she ran circles around pretty much anyone who interviewed her. I suggest that you look up interviews with her, I am always amazed by what a intelligent and remarkable human being she was. There’s a very good documentary about her called. “Nothing compares”, I strongly recommend watching it.
I didnt think she even liked it judging by her reactions during the song. She's a young black chick that knows not much of anything outside of ghetto wigs and extensions, Lol
Powerful song written by arguably the greatest complete entertainer that has graced this earth (Prince) but once Sinead sang this. He was happy to let her claim it.
Prince wrote it, his side project band"the family " were 1st to record it. Bit popular in the 80s, their other hit was the screams of passion. The female singer is Wendy's sister
The OG version was the one i knew about and was shown sometimes in TV in the 90s and maybe early 00s, i was born in 1988 and i remember my Mom listenings to this at home when i was a kid cause she had the CD, still has it, she and many of us knew about her sad situation even without this advanced Internet, times were different, i understand that in 2024, those who don't know about certain 90s videos yet, have more tendency to doubt about it, that's why i loved the 90s
I absolutely fell in love with her in the official video. I was in my early teens and her bold head was weird but her face was perfect. I still love that video.
Best comparable voice is lead singer of the band The Cranberries Dolores O'Riordan!!!! R.I.P. to both they were absolute legends!!! By the way she shaved her head before her first album was put out because the record executives said she would be famous because she was beautiful, out of defiance!!!!!
her mum had recently passed so the song has a couple of "meanings" .The part about the dead flowers is about her mum. They had a rather tough relationship. On the album version video she's actually in tears wen her voice trails off & she's looking down.
Have a listen around the holidays to her version of silent night from the Fred Claus movie. It's astonishing how powerful her voice is while practically whispering.
Sinead had a "diffcult" relationship with her mother who passed away in an RTI and some of this is addressing the issues. Perfect song for the perfect singer. RIP Sinead ❤❤
Theres a live version of "Troy" on UA-cam. Not her biggest hit, but probably her most powerful song wiht a huge build. To me it defines everything I love about Sinead! Would be awesome to see you react to it.
She was a great performer and an activist who spoke out against sexual abuse of children in the Catholic church. That hurt her career but she continued to speak out against wrongs until she passed. Courageous woman. RIP! 🙏
I usually don't care for reactors that talk so much through the video however I really like your perspective. She was a tortured, Beautiful Soul! And probably one of the first victims of cancel culture...as we know it today that is. She was wonderful...RIP Sinead
Please watch the interviews with her and watch the vivo version of this song. And then listen to her pain. And why she is bald. A stunning woman in all aspects
I'm crying listening to this. She spoke up and know one listened. Both my Grandparents were in Catholic Residential schools in British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦. They were Native Indians, they were beatin raped and tortured. If they spoke our Native language they would stick needles through there toungue. We have a Dark history here that they tryed to cover up. Now they are finding over 10,000 unmarked Graves of children who didn't make it.
She really sang this to her terribly abusive mother, who she wanted to reconcile with. The Mom died before they could reconcile and it went very hard on Sinead. The woman had 10 studio albums, was a mega-star for years, got cancelled for speaking the truth about the Catholic church, stuck to her guns, was an absolute warrior for truth. RIP, Sinead.
SHE WAS FROM DUBLIN, IRELAND....O'Connor has spoken openly about her mental health struggles. She has said that she was physically abused by her mother as a child and told Oprah Winfrey that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2007, which she later redacted. PEOPLE reports that in 2015, the singer posted on Facebook she had "taken an overdose" amidst a custody battle with Shane's father, the musician Donal Lunny. She later lost custody of her son. Her son took his life at 17. RIP Sinead, thank you for your music........

Such an amazing song. It was such a big hit when it came out.
This is the original,,"when it came out"....ua-cam.com/video/_ZlzN0Gtpp8/v-deo.htmlsi=Rucs8SvT0ol1s_u0
Her performance on the music video became iconic, her look her emotion ❤
I would definitely call her performance in this specific video “intense” for the lack of a better word! I’m glad you’re seeing this too!
Yes, it is magical.
Her original video was truly classic. R I P
Beautiful soul , astounding artist!!❤❤
I can't hear this song without tearing up
The OG version was the one i knew about and was shown sometimes in TV in the 90s and maybe early 00s, i was born in 1988 and i remember my Mom listenings to this at home when i was a kid cause she had the CD, still has it, she and many of us knew about her sad situation even without this advanced Internet, times were different, i understand that in 2024, those who don't know about certain 90s videos yet, have more tendency to doubt about it, that's why i loved the 90s
Masterful performance!
Been a fan since I was a teenager. Amazing. RIP. She is Irish and has a little bit of Irish keening.
She had a very difficult life. She was a beautiful human ❤
I absolutely fell in love with her in the official video. I was in my early teens and her bold head was weird but her face was perfect. I still love that video.
Irish voice, Irish vocal tradition.
In an interview, she said she would think of her troubled relationship with her mom while performing this song.
Live version of “This is the last day of our acquaintance” is an absolute must
Best comparable voice is lead singer of the band The Cranberries Dolores O'Riordan!!!! R.I.P. to both they were absolute legends!!! By the way she shaved her head before her first album was put out because the record executives said she would be famous because she was beautiful, out of defiance!!!!!
Absolutely. Zombie would be another great choice for a reaction video.
R.I.P. Sweet Sinead
Sinead was the most beautiful articulate troubled person. And she’s very dearly missed. RIP angel, sorry we didn’t listen. 💔
Love her.❤
Everything she did had her soul in it
We lost one of the greatest
her mum had recently passed so the song has a couple of "meanings" .The part about the dead flowers is about her mum. They had a rather tough relationship. On the album version video she's actually in tears wen her voice trails off & she's looking down.
Such a tortured beautiful soul. Her story was a hard one. she was amazing she and her son suffered and were lost to mental illness ❤
She was one of a kind. R I P Sinead. ❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
🍀🥃 The Parting glass 😢... I hope she found the Peace and her family's love 🙏 R.I.P. Sinead for eternity 🕯️
This one hits hard doll
Probably the most painfull song ever singed
And the one to ear 1000 times when somebody broke your heart, or you lose someone you love
this is a Prince song. great performance.
Have a listen around the holidays to her version of silent night from the Fred Claus movie. It's astonishing how powerful her voice is while practically whispering.
If you watch the OG music video of this from 1990, you'll notice is superior and more autentic to that same time to what happened to her back then
Of course we love you. Take care.
RIP Sinead!
Listen to the album version. When this came out the world was stunned and it shot to the top, worldwide
This one song by Prince which is what made her famous is one of the best songs ever written
RIP! 🙏
Sinéad. Was. Right.
Even at 56 she felt this song
This is the best version of this song imo, but I also love the stereophonics version
The best reaction video to the best music video on UA-cam,
"tell me baby, where did I go wrong?" Nice attitude
Man you gotta watch the music video. So raw. Like, even on your own time and not for the channel, you just have to. Get ready.
I love this song by Prince I believe he wrote this song for his beloved housekeeper she would cook his meals and put fresh flowers on his piano
STUDIO versions a must now
Sínéad.🕊
