Sinead's life was so tragic. Lost her mum in 1985 in a car crash, she is thinking of her mum during this song. It was written by Prince, who hand picked Sinead to sing it. She was so mis-inderstood when she was alive, ridiculed in my country because of her religious beliefs. She had a personal battle with Pope John Paul II and she became a num later in her life. The woman was nothing but an angel who taken from us too soon. RIP Sinead

I didn't realise until I watched a documentary about Sinead that Prince actually wrote this song about his housekeeper, for years she lived with him and did everything for him. All he had to do was get up, get dressed in the clothes she'd already laid out for him and go play guitar and write songs. She literally did everything else. When her father got ill she left and moved away and he was totally lost. He wrote the song and made it sound like a love song about an ended relationship so it would reach more people but it was actually about his housekeeper. The loss of whom was worse than any relationship he'd lost. When he heard Sinead's version of the song he called and told her the song is yours "Thank you for bringing my song to life".
I highly recommend you explore Sinead's other work as well, she was a great songwriter as well as a singer, the song "Troy" written about her difficult relationship with her mum is stunning.

Sinead's tears were real. She didn't expect to cry, but then she thought, "I should let this happen."
She explained that the tears came after thinking about her mom, who died in a car accident in 1985.
You can clearly see that she broke after singing:
All the flowers that you planted, mama
    In the back yard
All died when you went away

I lost my husband, when I was 8 Month pregnant ,in a car accident. It’s now 15 years ago and I can only describe the pain as a triangle in a triangular whole , every time I wake up and remember that my husband is dead , the triangle turn around, eventually making the whole round and the turning of the triangle becomes less painful with time. You’re not alone, the pain is real, but with time it gets manageable. I’ve remarried, but I still occasionally I still miss the father of my daughter. You’re not alone.

Sinead was a woman of strong convictions, a bit rebellious and something of an activist.
In 1992, she appeared on Saturday Night Live as an international pop star, thanks to the success of Nothing Compares 2 U. For her closing performance, she decided to do a cover of Bob Marley's War modified to protest child abuse within the Catholic Church. She did not share the very dramatic and controversial grand finale with SNL, and performed it on live TV, shocking millions. Her actions were deemed so outrageous that she was banned from SNL for life, and effectively tanked her career, but she never regretted it. To her, the real outrageous was the child abuse and the complicity of the church.
Her performance is beautiful, powerful and a tremendous example of moral courage. It's well worth reacting to.
Fight the REAL Enemy! Bob:Marley's 'War' performed by Sinéad o'Connor!

The reason why this is possibly the BEST version of this song is the simple fact that Sinead is singing it with a "sad gaspy voice", which gives the song a whole new meaning as it comes across as if someone is fighting to hold their own emotions in check while singing. In other words, her voice CONVEYS the emotional heartache of the lyrics.
As far as the video goes.... this "emotional connection to the lyrics" comes across even more when the tear falls from her eye. It was completely unexpected by her and the crew, but it was REAL because she was thinking about her mother who had past away prior to the song coming out. Just that last verse and reference to her mother was all it took for the emotional heartache to take a physical form in the teardrop.

She was an incredibly brave soul. The first person to really call out the Catholic Church for all of it's horrible abuses. R.I.P., Sinead. This is a cover of a Prince song.

@spells1389It was on the self-titled and only album of his band The Family and it was released in 1985. 5 years before this version.
Prince was also very salty about covers saying they erase the original

Hi Aileen. Thank you SO much for taking the time to allow us to react and travel WITH you on such a heart wrenching song. I was actually a freshman in high school when this came out…and it still hits hard now as it did when I was young and heard this for the 1st time. As a suggestion? I highly recommend listening to her album, “The Lion and The Cobra”. An AMAZING album. Thank you again for sharing and allowing us to take this musical journey with you! Your channel is fantastic. Make it a great day and keep up the great work! 😊🙏🏻

Hi Aileen, this song from Prince was filled with life by Sinéad O'Connor. In my opinion, her sad childhood allowed her to become such a great singer. It is also very sad that she commited suizide caused by her broken heart and soul.
Another beautiful song she sang was "Molly Malone" (an old irish song). Here too she showed her art of singing with showing her soul and heart. I highly recommend it.

When this album came out, I received it as a promo CD at the station. I was a program and music director at the time at this alternative radio station. Couldn't help it, I had to write to her and told her that, she'll become a major rock star because of this album. ... and here we are in April 2024, she's now part of our human psyches. RIP from an early fan!

In her video for "Take Me To Church" in 2014 Sinead references this song and music video.. interesting to compare the two and how she grew as a person and artist. The two songs are almost a full story.

Aileen ... Thank you so much for listening to Sinead and giving her a chance. I encourage you continue the journey with her. What a beautiful and moving tribute (and reaction) to her and this amazing piece of music.
She was quite the controversial artist while alive ... but Always...ALWAYS Authentic, Real and Not Scared to Put it All Out There. Like in the video, the tears are real; thinking of her own mother's tragic death 5-yrs prior. Doubly sad that the songwriter, Prince, is also passed away but their music and legacy live on.
Speaking of amazing female artists, I would recommend Kate Bush's **RUNNING UP THAT HILL** Think you will love it! Cheers!!
