From not wanting to really be out there, to disrespecting his lesser ranked opponent, to picking a fight with the ump, then finally trying to gaslight his opponent with compliments after winning shots. Currently he's riding on that Wimbledon match against Novak and his commentating gigs. He's somone who is clearly afraid of success and the pressure it would bring in terms of expectations. Therapy is needed and not for his tennis but his mental health going forward.
kyrgios never managed to handle the pressure of playing professional tennis with such a huge talent. It is clear that he suffers mentally on the court and would rather be anywhere else. He sure had depression for a large part of his career.
I’d say he’s depressed because he realises he’s not as spectacularly good at tennis as his ego would have him believe he is. Most people outgrow that stage of development when they are children. They don’t just stay there, stuck in the doldrums because reality is different from their dreams.
@@MonaleenianKyrgios may be immature, or suffering a mental illness or whatever, but I don’t think he was an egotist. The fact is he was insanely talented, and far better than the vast majority of pros. If he managed to stay focused, be fit and disciplined he would have won a few majors.

@@mikef6399 It's not as simple. We are all humans, and we are all dealing with stuff and fighting our own battles and demons. Being mental strong, is one of the rarest and hardest skills to archieve. For me - Kyrgios is a great example of no matter how talented you are at something, it doesnt matter if you don't put in the hard work also. Talentwise Kyrgios is the closest you get to Federer, yet his career is the complete opposite. As a wise man once said: You can archieve almost everything in this world with no talent if you work hard enough - And no matter how talented you are, it won't take you anywhere, if you are not willing to put in the hard work also.
I have always admired Kyrgios' talent and enjoyed many of his 'chaos' moments...but seeing the total lack of respect that he shows for a hard-working opponent in this match is truly unpleasant. Kyrgios clearly has no empathy for others...a sign perhaps of the inner demons with which he struggles.

12:01 i love how people say nick did that on purpose like- his attitude did not affect the way he played for that point. he actually appreciates his fans and being able to be on the court. he might lose it when he loses or misses a shot, or swears, or is disrespectful/has no sportmanship, but he’s not as bad as people paint him to be. people change for the worse when you criticize them even more… so be nice people !!
His overall attitude is disrespectful to the game, and in this instance his behaviour I thought was dismissive of his opponent because he was ranked so much lower. The issue for Nick is that tennis is an individual sport so you don't have coaches that can hook you mid match for having a bad attitude. There's very little accountability. You do something stupid and lose, you just play in the next tournament. Imagine producing this in a Sir Alex Ferguson team. You wouldn't play again and be shipped out in the next transfer window.
He is someone to watch in future events. Thanks! I hate unfair ethics in fair fights, but he is confident, arrogant and talented player. Your game is cocky enough so no need to disgrace your self. It's a gentlemen's sport. In our days every sport should be so. As far as a bad language can go, there are champions in tennis that could outshine your bad manner in a mile. People thought they can use trash talk as an instrument to immediate their opponents in fighting sports and found out that's not the right place to show bad manners. cheers!

Yes. There is a clause in the rulebook for giving effort. I believe Nick has been fined for tanking before. There are clips of Tomic online giving low effort and he got penalized for it. Players are expected and required to give their best effort.
See Goran Ivanisevic for examples having been repeatedly fined, and even disqualified if I remember correctly for tanking in matches.. difference is Goran has won a Grand Slam despite his attitude.. Nick is basically a clown doing tricks for our (the spectators) amusement now..
I don’t know why the ref didn’t simply explain to him what he meant by borderline, I’m fairly certain what he meant was that he was pushing the envelope of not putting in professional effort.
I don't think it would have helped. If you watch Nick's other matches, he always finds something to dig into in a hyper and unreasonable way. It's not rational and that's the whole problem. He let's something get under his skin and just won't let it go.
WHY? i can tell u why; bc any comment TO NK results in an insulting relentless barrage of disrespectful verbal vomit from NK to anyone that dares make a semi challenging comment to him. the ump shd wear ear plugs and NK shd put contact cement in his lip gloss!
He gets p… off with the umpire for cutting his rhythm off, but he doesn’t realize how disruptive and unsportsmanlike he actually is for the opponent with all his talking during rallies, disrespectful mocking and attitude on court. So disrespectful. If I were his opponent, it would certainly motivate me. The strange thing is, I heard Kyrgios commentating on Wimbledon this year and he sounded quite amiable and modest.
Being a clown is one thing, but being disrespectful is something completely different. Kyrgios has undeniably natural talent and has worked hard to be able to play this level of tennis. But he is unbearable as a player and not an advertisement for this sport.
No player likes to play in Chinese tournaments, many of the players only play there because of the show bonus. That's why you always see so many upsets there, especially during the first couple of weeks. I guess Nick was just one of the players that just want to grab the bonus and head home.
@@hehehehehahahaha2025 Well, I think it is a schedule thing. They are played late season, and the ATP Tour is a freaking grind, and not all players are mentally tough enough to withstand it all. I think Kyrgios missed his family and friends. Just because you have a boat load of talent does not mean that you have a strong drive to be the best. While thousands of players wishes that they had Kyrgios' talent, he wishes that he had the motivation of others. It is very rare to see a strong combination of the two. Some extremely talented athletes would rather have a normal life away from the spotlights and fame, but their talents keep them in the game.
@@hehehehehahahaha2025 There are many reasons - 1. The tournament schedule - The tournaments are played in late season, and the schedule is usually very tight. Plus it's the season which it rains a lots, matches are often delayed, which makes the schedule even tighter. 2. The weather - Apart from the rain, wind, air pollution and temperature difference is also quite bad there. The wind can get pretty strong sometimes, and air pollution could affect how you breath. Temperature difference between day and night is also huge, so if a match was delayed from mid-day to evening, it'd deffo be a problem. All of the above can affect how a player performs. 3. The line judges - The line judges used to be very awful there. Though they have improved and there's hawkeye system now, it can still be quite annoying sometimes. 4. Corruption - I used to be tennis player in Taiwan, it's well known and often discussed between the players that the authorities in China often offer a bonus to players to lose the matches against local players. This way they can give the players a ranking boost, make local people feel proud, and increase the ticket sale. It's a well known screct that no one wants to talk about, because ATP/WTA needs the money, and players don't want to get into trouble by making it public. You can see that by seeing how fast they resumed back to play in China after Peng Shuai incident. It's also a hard choice for players, because they don't want to say yes, but if they say no, they're going to risk losing sponsorship from Chinese companies. That's why many players would rather just not play there at all.
@@v4v819 To me, talents are the things you cannot teach. Thus, I think the defensive specialists are less talented than the shot makers. I know that there are defensive talents, especially the return of serve, but grindy players like Mats Wilander and Lleyton Hewitt are more teachable because the mental part increases with experience. Shot making is much harder to teach, and first serve in particular. Only rating the shot making play style I'd put Kyrgios at Tier S in talent among Federer, Sampras, McEnroe, Becker, and Edberg. Kyrgios' lack of motivation was his downfall. Rating defensive players I'd put Borg, Agassi, Nadal, Djokovic and Wilander significantly more talented than Murray. Defensive players win by grinding down their opponents and making them miss. It is very efficient, and the changes of the surfaces, making the grass significantly slower has certainly helped them win tournaments. So, being biased against defensive players, I'd put Kyrgios talents over Wilander, Hewitt, Murray etc. I mean, if Murray had Kyrgios first serve, then he'd win so many grand slams.
As volatile as Nick is in this match, there's still some stunning shotmaking from him! And let's forget that Bradley Klahn's potential was curtailed by two back surgeries and his playing is quite impressive here.
He is fun to watch, he is relax and regardless of his behavior in the court. He is himself and I admire that he express what he is feeling, even if that makes the referees uncomfortable! but this actually allow him to play more relax and get his level higher. It is a very interesting strategy

*the point after was obvious that he lost interest and just hit that out, but that’s different.

Why are Chinese tournaments not liked by players? I'm not in the loop on that one.
@@hehehehehahahaha2025
There are many reasons -
@@MrClebophd He was talented but not as talented as the big 4...
Only rating the shot making play style
I'd put Kyrgios at Tier S in talent among Federer, Sampras, McEnroe, Becker, and Edberg. Kyrgios' lack of motivation was his downfall.
Rating defensive players
I'd put Borg, Agassi, Nadal, Djokovic and Wilander significantly more talented than Murray.
