don't forget the multi-output version of this where you CAN have those other MIDI channels on separate channels in the mixer and you CAN put different plug-ins etc on them! You can tell whether or not your instrument supports this if it says "multi-output" in the list of stereo/mono/ etc and there is a little plus sign on the channel strip in the mixer (not the arrange)
I don't think I've ever met anyone or seen anyone know Logic Pro like it was their living room. It's outstanding how much you know about it in all your videos. You rock man, hats off!
Usually I enjoy your videos but this one just doesn't make sense to me. If you want to split e.g. a piano part the way you do, you simply create multiple tracks assigned to the same instrument. Multi-timbrality has nothing to do with that (in fact, the EXS is not a multi-timbral instrument. Multi-timbrality is when you use one virtual instrument that can load several different patches (timbres) in parallel - like Omnisphere (or the Korg M1) for example. In your use case you would load up Omnisphere, select the same piano patch 3 times in slots 1-3 and then record each part for a different slot (which would be as pointless as using 3 different instances of the same piano plugin). The sustain-pedal track wouldn't work as it would send sustain pedal on channel 4 while the note-tracks would be playing on channels 1-3. In your video the pedal *does* work because the EXS isn't multi-timbral and thus sends all midi-data, regardless of assigned channel, to the same single instrument (i.e. your piano). I.e. the fact that the pedal works, proves my point that your example has nothing to do with multi-timbrality.
if you're doing this (especially when using the sustain pedal) make sure that your software instrument has it's maximum voices/notes set high enough, so that you don't get note stealing. on the esx24, you can see this at the top of the ui - "voices" and "used". just have a look while it's playing and make sure "used" doesn't exceed "voices". if it does, increase voices. the max is 64, but other instruments, like kontakt, go way higher.
This is exactly what I was looking to do. However, I was looking to do this with an external multi-timbral midi instrument, not a software instrument. I'm sure there's a lot more steps to accomplish recording external multi-timbral instruments this way.
Thanks, this helped! Is there a way to "unlink" the midi tracks so they can be solo'd individually? Is there something we can do in the environment? Sure i can solo in the audio mixer with Battery's multi-outs, but would be great to solo the individual midi tracks. Right now if I solo one of the 8 midi tracks i have going to Battery 4, it solo's all the midi tracks going to Battery.
Josh, do you also have videos on multi-output? For example, I want to record and arrange a horn section using Studio Horns but I can't figure out how to put up one instance of Studio Horns and have each track play a different instrument. Thanks.
this is cool for sure. but how do you mix like this? like you can't move a fader without all of them moving right? or do you just turn them into audio first or something?
Can I do a video request about creating piano music notation in Logic? Voice separation is done by assigning channels to left and right hands (on a single track) and then selecting Piano 1/3 in Score. It’s super-unobvious but will help to create print-outs quickly for another musicians, session recordings, etc. without learning another app (Sibelius or similar). Tweaking note position, grace notes and tuplets is pain, but simple stuff is all automatic and quite accurate.
Your videos are very well put together. Thank you for taking the time to help all of us. Do you do tutorials for other DAWs? I just switched over to Cubase Pro. I’m not entirely ditching Logic though.
Thanks. Is it possible to add a track in a multitimbral instrument? When I add a track it appears as a new instrument. I am trying to use this with Vienna Pro 7 and after I have connected the instrument as a small ensemble, if I want to add an instrument it opens as a new instrument which is annoying. Thanks in advance. Your tutorials are impressive.
Nice clear explanation. Thanks for the video. One question: even though you stated you do not like to do this for drums, I think I would find it easier to build up the beat in different parts of the song by being able to copy over a hi-hat pattern while changing the bass or snare or other percussion. Is there any reason why we could not combine multi-timbral with multiple output instruments? Also, what I would really like to do is to see the full drum part in a single region when the track stack is collapsed and then see it break out the individual parts of the kit into separate regions on their mixer channels for easy editing when I expand the track stack. Can I get that with this or some other editing/configuration trick? Thanks again for the great channel. I always learn something new from your videos.
Hi Josh, could i please ask; if i wanted to export a multi timbral instrument to send to a mix engineer as part of my overall arrangement, does it automatically bounce just the main track or does it export all 4 regions?
It will unfortunately just bounce the audio source, so everything will just be in one track, even if you choose 'bounce all tracks' from the file menu. What I've done before is bounce each channel individually by muting the regions. Because it's one instrument if you mute a channel, it mutes all the channels. So you can press Control M to mute individual regions, and and bounce out each MIDI channel individually.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy ah that's perfect. I was hoping you'd say that ... thank you again . this is going to be so helpful for me as a very unpolished key board player
I used to do some one-on-one lessons via Skype, but I stopped doing them because they never really work out well from a Logistical standpoint. However, I am going to be starting a new service on my website this summer, where you can send me your mix/session and I'll make a custom critique video showing you how to improve it. Sort of like taking private lessons. Shoot me an email at musictechhelpguy@gmail.com and I'll remember your contact and let you know when the service is live.
You can also select any existing track and convert it into multi-timbral by pressing ctrl+enter (Track > Other > New track with next MIDI channel).

Duuude, I was just thinking about this concept, minutes later I see this.. Thanks
This video might just change my entire production method lol. Thank you for these insightful tutorials, they've helped me quite a bit!

Thanks a lot. That was exactly what I was looking for!
Dude, thank you so much for sharing such great videos with us! Your videos changed my life as a music producer.
Thanks. You're my number 1 source for Logic Pro X

I thought I knew this stuff already but I watched anyway because I enjoy your videos. I was wrong. I learned a few things. Thanks.
Brilliant! Thanks!
Dude perfect... my left hand is injured from too much practice. Just what I needed.
Please music help guy can you show us how the drums work in multi timberal

Yes, you absolutely CAN combine multi-timbral with Multi-output!
How would you automate the naming of it? Hehe
Thanks. Always learning new stuff from you.
Great simple vid and yet two thumbs down? Who are these guys that do this? What’s not to like. ?
Nice tutorials thank you sir

G.E.M.S.
I'm not sure it makes sense to be pronounced tambral when it's spelled timbral. I expect it just ends up sounding like that the way people say it
What the hell is that sponsor lol
Apparently one that has gone out of business, cause the link no longer works! I'll clip it out. Thanks.
Very useful
