“The Violin I doesn’t go below G.”
FINALLY!
Indeed! I guess perks of getting a degree in composition and having a background in orchestration 🤓🤓 haha
Nathan, as a devout Logic Pro X user who loves using orchestral instruments, I have to give you some mad respect! Very well done video. Thank you for doing this.
Now I’m really pumped. You set the bar high I better not be disappointed! ;) I absolutely love the cello section legato. use the cello even his violin pretty often. I think it sound really good.
wasn't expecting such an emotional and beautiful demo composition!
That viola lead at 11:23 sounds just like the lead part of San Holo’s song “lift me from the ground”. Love your videos !!
I thought the "damage" track had a very Zimmer vibe... I thought we were gonna start scoring a new Pirates movie lol
Haha thanks! Love it! -- and YES DAmage is dope
Sounds like Hans Zimmer soundtrack! Awesome job man!
Haha I wish I could casually sit down at my keyboard and effortlessly write music that makes me get the feels, like this. lol.
Subscribed, you know how refreshing it is to see someone make these sorts of videos and actually be a musician and not just a kid in a bedroom with daddy's expensive gear. Respect 👊
I don't know about session strings, but the orchestral samples from sampler/EXS24 are from Vienna Symphonic Library, one of the best orchestral libraries. They're really top-end.
OMG this is SO USEFUL!! Thanks so much... I never knew about the dynamics automation thing! And some of these other things too... i've always wanted to learn a bit more about arranging for strings and how to use them in Logic (whether their stock ones or another sample library), This is the kind of thing I had hoped they would have gone into in my university degree, supposedly teaching "composition" but they didn't really cover doing this kind of stuff at all properly. Also, it's very reassuring to hear you mention the delayed attack thing - that plagued me when i first used strings in Logic - I was so confused and wondered if i was somehow imagining it, but i steadily learned to just move them forward as you say. Makes it harder to know EXACTLY how much to move it though, if you want it to sound like it's really "on the grid" and perfectly quantized. Anyway thanks again - I am so looking forward to delving into your course and learn more!!
Thanks for putting the time in to do that, Nathan. Really clear, even though you managed to race through a lot of things a noob like me needs to know about. But the joy of UA-cam is I can rewatch this and savour all the richness you crammed in over the coming days. 🖖👍
Happy to do it. Love doing it. Thanks!
I see how it comes together when you start sculpting the dynamics, thanks for sharing!
For sure! Takes work to make it work
Thank you for this, you have a talent for explaining things in a way that is easy to understand. This made me very excited to start using logic, I am an aspiring composer but without my own software/hardware I'm going to youtube to learn for now
You video just convinced me to take the leap and buy Logic Pro. Excellent work…….
Hey Nathan! Just wanted to say THANK YOU. I have been watching your channel recently and everything has been super helpful 🙏🙏🙏 hope you have an amazing thanksgiving
Thank you! Have a great thanksgiving yourself!
Tip - there is a midi command, force legato... shift \ boom! Use your precious time to do other things... Cheers.
Fefilus is there a command cheat sheet you can point me to with more of these goodies? Thank you, good share!
@@jdubbs9655 Option K opens the key command menu, you can study and create your own shortcuts!

@@Worshipcaster Thanks champ!
very nice comparison! I really like that you go straight to the point, without chatting too much:). Thanks!
Wow, thanks! I´m running to my mac as soon as I press send!
Thanks so much Nathan! Such an excellent, informative and musical tutorial. I've never been particularly impressed with Logic strings but you've opened up a whole new way of arranging and getting much more than expected out of the patches. Can't wait to try to utilize some of the techniques you've provided. Great work! (Yes - subscribed). :)
Awesome to hear that! Thanks brother
Nice string writing. The first tracks reminds me of Aaron Copeland. I think there’s some music education at work here… quite a contrast to the midi pack ad in the middle. Thank you again.
I like the logic string sounds as well but the last one is incomparable
Awesome video. You open up a whole new world of creativity. THANK YOU!!
@ 12:16 here's a little tip for you man, if you highlight all the notes then press ( shift + \ ) logic will stop each note where a new one begins, saves you having to shorten the end of each note
Yeah, I know that command - for some reason even though i know it, I still don't use it a ton - it's one of those things I learned like a year ago and was like "oh. How have I not known this is like 12 years?" But then I revert to what I've done for 12 years LOL
one of the greatest tips for VST on youtube
Love it! Thanks! 😎😎
Goosebumps!
Nice to watch content like this! Thank you 🙂
The default Logic metronome click lives in my brain.
Why my logic Pro X has no all the strings articulations? You have so many. Thank you for the video
Go to Studio Strings instead of Orchestral>Strings>Cello etc. If still not working try updating and make sure you have the plugins downloaded
Awesome video man! Filled with tons of great info explained quickly and concisely
Woot! Thanks!
Great! Thanks for the comparison between Logic Pro X Stock Instruments and dedicated pro sample libraries. VERY interesting! Cheers!!
Really cool brother... been wanting to dive into some of this for a while.. you make it look so easy... sounded great!
Also.. say you want to play a violin part with numerous different articulations. A couple legato strokes followed by a tremolo and then staccato back to legato etc… so you have to open a new session track each time just to change those articulations and play a note or two? or is there a way to play them fluently in one whole take changing the expressions? Maybe automating the functions to the keyboard or is that too complex? Hmm 🤔
Absolutely inspiring and impressive! Thank you.
Great video! I was surprised at how good Logic's strings sounded.
Thanks for taking the time!.
Thanks bro making this lovely informative video, it's very helpful
Your puppy dog matches the vibe of the upbeat orchestral music! Kudos! :)
The slow attack on the strings sounded good. Added to the mood. Shoulda left it alone.
Great demo... I gotta say the East West sounded the best/fullest but for the ease of use the stock stuff will defiantly get the message across... would be a great scratch tool for demos and then be able to go back thru with the third party stuff for the final project
Yeah, East West is pretty phenomenal
Sounding great man - Very useful tool !!
For sure! Thanks!
Great anyhow -/- I just wished you told us more of how a HUMAN would play this THX
Do you have a complete course for logic Pro X
I'm switching over from Pro Tools
I just need a complete walk-through of how everything works
ASAP how much
very good video thank you very much!
Do you know if I can handle pitch and transposition with this library? The orchestra one does allow it, but in this one the controls are a little more basic.
This was so helpful. Thank you!
Absolutely! Thanks for checking it out. What kind of music are you making?
Loved this video. Informative! Thank you.
Happy to hear that!! 🔥
Good Stuff man!!
My Teacher ❤ !
How do you solve the latency issues while recording??
So helpful! Thank you!
😎 absolutely!
I am upgrading from GarageBand to Logic. I love the Damage percussion and have looked at Dune3 for cinematic depth. Excellent video. I will hold off on some of the other options at first. Can Damage be bought buy itself?
Does anyone have any idea which sample library has all individual instruments conforming a whole orchestra??
Thank you for many great videos. Did you do any tutorials on the score editor? I'm looking for appoggiatura no slash threw notes. I came across grace notes but no appoggiatura, I have ask about this on many platforms with no joy, is it possible that logic don't have these notes?
Great composition! I am wondering if there is another way to adjust the volume? For example, instead of taking the volume points up and down, can we do this with midi controller such a ribbon or breath controller? Thanks!
I'm on 10.6.2 and nothing looks the same. Studio strings isn't even an option on the first column. There is Studio Strings under Orchestral/Strings but the sample controls looks nothing like this demo. What am I doing wrong or is the software different now?
Do you pan them? Are they not already placed in the stereo field where they should sit within an orchestra? I’m asking cuz I’m not sure myself and I’ve been told not to pan them because your panning an already placed stereo sound if that makes sense.. thoughts?
Fantastic job Nathan!
I’m considering getting Logic with my new Mac (as part of the pro software bundle) and this has helped me understand the possibilities of Logic.
I am coming from using Ableton Live Suite which include their full instrument collection, and I was wondering what you would do if you already had a huge library of instruments in one DAW but wanted to switch to a new one? Would you use rewire to get the Ableton instruments into Logic? Or just use the Logic instruments/get NI Komplete Standard?
So helpful. Really appreciate you.
Thanks a bunch! So glad to hear this helped you
Great video man...loved it. Also am I the only that kept looking at the dog thinking maybe the dog is busting to go the lu haha...
Dude, you are a SICK keyboardist!
Thanks a bunch!! Been playing a lonnnng time
when I select spiccato, it doesn't change the articulation... Could somebody help me?
Do a video how to use logic pro pianos!
Thank you for this tutorial! When you play Logic Studio Strings, do you use the sustain pedal?
That's a great question.
fav tip was turning on advanced settings
Fantastic job, hello from Italy
Good morning,
I have a problem with this Studio Strings, drums, Studio drummer and Studio Horns. These sounds don't quantize correctly. Impossible to record them, despite each quantization method proposed in Logic pro x.
I wanted to reinstall all the library but 72 go take me 3 days to do that and maybe will not be OK. Have you got a solution please? Thanks
Hey Nathan. I absolutely need THE GIANT Piano-Sound! 🥰Can I buy the basic download? I have LogicProX, but no software from KOMPLETE. And I work on Mac, not Windows. Does it work? Or do I have to pay attention to something else? Please help me.
BTW: Love your melody 🥰
thanks for the lesson
where can I download these strings?? 😭 I don't have all the options, and am unsure where to download them!
Great video! Question: what keyboard controller are you using?
Why not just increase the attack?
Great tutorial. Thanks. I haven’t really used the Logic strings either, but this sounded great. The Violins I’s still sound like a synth organ though. :)
Yeah getting really good violin I is tough with melodic parts
Can you tell me how the sidechain input on the studio strings work. Seems to do nothing what ever i choose in there
how do you trim the ends at 18:34?????
loved it man...
Love your lesson!
Thank you! 🙏😎
Great insight thank you !!
hey so i dont have a mod wheel, any other way i can manually input those dynamics?
Yes! Just use modulation automation in the piano roll editor
Great. which version of logic ?
Hello Nathan, is it possible to do this using the Scarlett 2i2? I have a keyboard that uses stereo (no midi keyboard), that is connected to the Scarlett 2i2. Just wondering if I can make a track and choose some instruments instead of the actual sound of the keyboard?
Thanks Man it’s awesome
Sweeeet!
great date ! a mass show
Excellent! Thank you
🙏🙏🙏 of course!
so cool. subscribed!
Nice video, Thanks I learned a lot. I have a question I recorded a midi track with a Vst I bounced in situ and I wanted to hide that track so I could decrease the amount of processing The track turned into black color I deactivated the Vst and now I want to record something again and edit something in the piano roll and now that track is black color It doesn't sound even though I put the same Vst instrument do you know why it happens? What I have to do to decrease the processing by turning off the Vst and What I have to do to activate that track again? Thanks
What was that at 13:22
Thx man very good
Hai, the plug in native instruments, is it the free one?
No, Native Instruments isn't free - The Logic strings just come with Logic thoigh
does anyone know a video that explains what are the best sound packs for orchestral arrangement, i want to start adding orchestra sounds in my music but i cant seem to find the right natural sound, or samples
Best three come from East West, Spitfire, and Native Instruments in my opinion. I love east west for larger orchestral stuff.
@@NathanJamesLarsen THANK YOU, will definitely check some videos on them and see which one to get
Hey, thanks for sharing...great stuff here...subscribed !
Thanks man!
Awesome! Thanks Nathan!!
Sure thing!!
This is so beautiful, I can't.... haha
Which keyboard are you using?
Native Instruments Kontrol S88
Nathan Larsen Music thanks
Cool,😊
Yeah, Quantum Leap is kind of a grandiose name, but they certainly earned it ...
Yeah it's amazing - it's a work horse in many ways too. Take a LOT of computer power to use it.
Both libraries sound pretty fake.i have to blend libraries to get anything passable.
After "ear training " it seems your "ear" is the most powerful instrument you are using.
Not only hearing ear, but imagination ear. Film score at 19 years old? Shit. I did my first at age fifty!!
Oh my GOODNESS! What a beautiful arrangement! Please continue to upload this kind of tips.
Amazing. I fear, sir, you may be an actual musician with training in composition instead of a hack bashing out EDM. Most refreshing.
Haha! Thanks! And yes... I have a degree in music composition and been studying composition/songwriting for about 20 years (professionally for 13) and I really do appreciate that! Goal with the channel is to bring some more thought into it all!
@@NathanJamesLarsen wooow
I thought the same thing. Great video.
Are you aware the majority of EDM producers are well versed in music theory
@@bubbleguppy4892 “The majority”… of course!
Never thought I’d be so inspired to create a track like this. Great vid!
This was a really awesome, inspiring and informational video. I really loved the piece and this got me even more interesting in really composing music (just got into music production and using Logic around 8 months ago, teaching myself). I always love cinematic, epics sounding productions, the juxtaposition between the somber and epic pieces really hit home on the range of music I'd love to one day make. Thanks Nathan!
This is great - thanks a bunch. I love the composition process. Gets me super jacked. So it's awesome to hear it's inspiring you! Do it!
Damn!! You made it seem so simple. A person like me who's trying to learn logic pro from scratch, a lot learn from this video. Making a song in just 35mins I think that is quite an experience and knowledge you have about Music & Production. Hope to see a lot more videos from you and probably breaking things down in layers for a beginner. Thumbs up!! you have a subscriber now :) :) :)
Appreciate this a lot! Experience and practice help a ton! It took a while to get to this point - 12 years in and I'm still learning, too! Thanks for subscribing and hope to keep providing value
Trust me Logic is shit too.👽
With videos like this you're going to be at 50K subs before the end of the year. Well done man!
I think this wins best comment 🙏🙏🙏
