Guthrie is the perfect example of a virtuoso who plays with tremendous feel. Even when he shows off, it's both mind-blowing and emotionally resonant. I can't think of any other guitar player who can literally do it all, seemingly without effort. He's unbelievable.
+Adrian Lee Much as I like Steve Vai's work with Zappa, to me, he's a machine. I've never heard him play anything that moved me on a deeper level. Even when he played the blues in Crossroads, it felt very forced. He's just a sci-fi guitarist with a knack for playing very difficult music, whereas Guthrie can play whatever he likes and make it sound authentic. Guthrie isn't bound down by any particular style.
I met him in Bangkok at a John McLaughlin concert. He is exactly as you might imagine him. He said something great, too. I complimented him on having mastered so many different styles and techniques and said something like, "You must have put in an incredible amount of work." He said, "Well, if it had felt like work, I wouldn't have done it."
I love how he uses the whole neck...all the positions, all the strings, it adds so much to the quality of the music. No sitting in one position and playing the same five notes. Octaves are a wonderful thing.
fil, i love watching you react to all the videos. its the honest pure love of music and guitar written all over your face thats contagiouse. i always find myself swaying my head and smiling in unison with you. keep it up brother! love your vids!!
This freaking guy !!!!!! When I first heard him I thought , OK, he's a shredder. A damn good one. Then I heard him play a slower Blues, basic I-IV-V and it was extremely emotional. Then I listened to more of his shredding and heard all of the emotion he was putting into it as well. The jazz licks, the arpeggios, the bending, the alternate picking and sweeps, hybrid finger picking, slide...... He's a monster. One of those guys that makes me realize I will NEVER be that good.
Yeah, "the best" conversations are ridiculous then you hear Goven and think, damn, maybe he's the best. Not many players can merge brilliant melody w speed the way he does -- so melodic, somehow, almost always.
In my opinion Shawn Lane takes that spot he was just crazy good, well guthrie is crazy good too. I guess its just down to personal preference. one thing I think we can agree is that the best players always seem to be the most humble think, Guthrie, Shawn Lane, Jason Becker and those other beasts.
I loved seeing Guthrie play on the same stage with Steve Vai , and you could tell that Steve got his feelings hurt that day , man I could watch it over and over, and Guthrie didn't even really rip anything , cause he's cool like that....
Guthrie is such a brilliant player. I only discovered him within the last year when I picked up the Aristocrats live DVD. I also have a DVD of them in the studio. It's really interesting watching them work together. How they take each others personalities and playing style into account when writing. Great stuff. Cheers Fil!
Guthrie Govan and Paul Gilbert are a couple of my favorite guitarists. Not only because of their amazing playing but also because they still have both feet on the ground. They're modest and always willing to teach and help other guitarists. As far as their playing is concerned, they should both be wearing a big S on their chest!

To all those saying Guthrie hasn't any 'definitive solos' to his name...I implore you to listen to the solos on drive home and regret #9...actually pretty much everything he played on those two albums for Wilson qualify as more than definitive...imho of course. 😋
My personal favorite video guthrie's done with the jamtrackcentral stuff is "remember when," really shows off the accurate sliding you were talking about in the beginning of this one.
i'm just guessing, but here Guthrie is channeling Bill Nelson, with his Gibson ES-335, circa 1977 ("Live In The Air Age"). Again, i'm just guessing. Bill Nelson will never, ever be given his just props.
Excellent !! I attended a Guthrie guitar clinic at Washington Music Center several years ago and yeah he's a top level player and supremely nice guy -- I like his use of a pack of rolling papers to raise the strings so he can play slide -- hilarious
If you're humble then you're hungry for more. That's when you constantly improve yourself. If you have big ego then you stop improving cause you think you're already awesome.
You should try and watch him in a studio setting from 18in away, my eyes couldn't keep up with his fingers, and what a wonderfully chilled out guy he is too.
Is that a Gibson ES 335? Sounds gr8...also looks like he has a processor there in the right...I have a couple of guitar midi processors and love them...I also play through two amps for stereo sound...makes a difference.

Martin Miller said about this backing tracks album. "This is not a song. It is a backing track to play solos over, that I composed and recorded for Guthrie. And the solo is fully improvised. I was there to record it with him, he did a handful of takes and each of them was completely different."
Guthrie used to teach at BIMM in Brighton but when I was attending BIMM he was only doing master classes as he had finished but Jesus is his music theory immense
