It’s hard to be super prescriptive regard the best of anything, but if someone could point me in the direction of any guitarist anywhere, alive or dead, who can transpose himself in to any song, in any genre, in any style and seamlessly integrate himself with such a range of skill, feel, and precision then I really really want hear that person play. They put Einsteins brain in a jar, and they should probably put Guthrie's hands in a jar when he passes, for all guitar playing tourists to behold and drool over!
Technically he is a monster, but what makes him the highest level master, wizard level if you will, Lies not in his physical ability on the instrument. There is a quality that the highest level guys have that transcends guitar, Shaun lane was another example. Those qualities are having great humbleness as well as having very high IQ and emotional awareness. Also very very little EGO, the recipe for a wizard

Very well summed up, totally agree.
I never thought of him as a technical guitarist, but that just speaks to his greatness
Matteo Msncuso is also way up there. In some ways more technically skilled. Not sure if as complete.
Number one !!!!!
To unseat Allan Holdsworth would take a whole lot.
He is the evolution of a guitar player. He can adapt to any genre seamlessly with rhythmic perfection with feel.
Never expected to see Guthrie on the same stage as Johnny Marr, awesome
One of the best players I've ever seen. His mind is what's intriguing. His approach when he explains his techniques is amazing.

what makes guthrie great, imo, is he's just playful, light hearted, not self important. there's a takeaway there, hint hint , wink wink...
