First off, his surname sounds like 'Govern', not Go-van. I was lucky enough to live in the same town and grew up watching him play from the 90s onward. The man has no ego, and will talk to anyone, especially if you buy him beer.

I suggest showing him his solo om the Larry Carlton style backing track. The phrasing is so insane for an improvisation

It looks like nobody wants to talk about Guthrie, i think he is to spooky for the most guitarists...... but its my hero, i am playing for about 40 years now and he is an inspiration for me! Lets hear this again boys? You know whats music is about! 👏👏👏

Very good for seeing what things he can do or how creative, but for pure feel, I'd suggest something more like his solo at the end of Regret #9 (full name Home Invasion/Regret #9 by Steven Wilson) for example.

    What scales is he using?

It's the Just play fast enough then anything goes -scale. Very familiar to jazz musicians.
Strictly speaking maybe 2 notes are too noticeably off in that scale, but it depends on the order of playing and it will become intuitive with time.

Please, search & react The Aristocrats - Bad Asteroid live. This is great player wasted on another run of the mill blues funk junk.

Starts off good but halfway through it just goes into Yngwie plays the blues and it lost all the musicality. He’s obviously insanely talented but he needs to quit the scale running and actually play.

I grew up in Guthrie's hometown Chelmsford ... He pronounces it "Govern", but only fair that people mispronounce his name as he refuses to say Lee Ritenour's name properly.... Lee says "written hour" but Guthrie can't stop saying "Rittan orr" even after recording with the Man😃I had 2 Bass Guitar lessons with Guthrie's brother Seth around 1990, they were both still working at McDonalds ... i recall they shared a bedroom in a very small council house, they had nothing except their Guitars and Guthrie had an Fostex R-8 reel to reel that he wrote his 1st album on, he had all that stuff written in 1990, Waves, 7s, etc ...
Guthrie is a true genius, even back in 1990 he was like an 'ascended master' , not only as a Musician, but as a Man, as a human Soul, as devoid of ego or pretension as a Man can get ... Guthrie is nicest Man i ever met, 100% honest in his interactions with everyone (very rare) ... Guthrie never talked down to anyone or tried to assert 'status' or 'rank' ...... Guthrie is the exact opposite of a narcissist ...... Guthrie went to the same Grammar school as my Brother .... everyone was scared of my violent psychopath brother and knew to avoid him .... when i met Guthrie the 1st thing he said was "you're Peter Harrad's brother aren't you? What's THAT like?" .... it was the first time anyone had ever expressed sympathy or even acknowledged that it was a really bad card to be dealt, being the younger brother of such a notorious and violent psychopath ... i will always love Guthrie for that, it meant a lot to me that one of the few people i can respect, one of the most accomplished and able and decent Men says "hey dude, i see your burden" when nobody was trying to help me ..... Don't want to offend anyone but Guthrie IS cooler than Jesus Christ, i would say he is on a par in terms of moral integrity plus Guthrie can play Guitar!
