Was just about to post a request for him on the podcast! No offence to the Collecting Addicts but they’re not a patch on the amazing conversations Chris did initially!
Chris had "grown" many years ago, what we are lucky enough to see now is a man happy just to be himself and with no desire to impress. He is such a remarkable journalist, not purely because of his own talents/abilities, but because he is happy to praise those who he has learnt from.
One of the best? From how many? The best is the last Championship winner not winners of almost forgotten seasons that current era DTS people would describe as 'untrue' or 'insane.' NM was overrated. He was a fast wise man but his moaning is a soul destroyer 😅😅
And a nice guy. Once I was part of a guard stopping fans mobbing Nige when he raced a Sierra in the BTCC series at Silverstone. If Nigel spotted a fan in a wheelchair or on crutches , he would go over to them and spend many minutes chatting. For sure one of the Good Guys.
@@samuelgarrod8327 Well he was racing in an era when you had 4/5 people with a shout of winning the WDC. Rather than the 1 horse winnners of the past 15 years.
Please do more racing stories like this. We need more historical looks into racing than the oversubscribed world of super cars we’ll never have. Great work.
The thing about that Mansell story that went untold - the first time Nigel got in the car and went around the track, he immediately came into the pits and said "go to the truck and get me the softest springs you've got". After they were fitted, Nige went two seconds quicker than the car had ever gone around that circuit. That's why Patrick felt they'd wasted 1990 - they'd (at Boutsen's behest) gone completely in the wrong direction in terms of car setup.
That's right, although Head has also stated 3 seconds! Having both Boutsen and Patrese was a mistake - although I rated the latter - and I'm somewhat surprised that Renault didn't apply pressure to get an out and out Number 1, though I believe Williams did try. Boutsen was never top draw and was only really at Williams by default.
Patrick head said it was the anti roll bar, boutsen had been used to a really stiff anti roll bar, fitting a softer one then setting the car up around that he said if nigel was in the car in 1990 hed have been within touching distance of the championship, probably second but giving Senna a run for his money closer than Prost did in the Ferrari. He also Reckoned Nigel would have been even more dominant in the 93 car than in 92, as Prost struggled with the active suspension which was most advantageous to the aggressive drivers like Mansell and Senna, not the smooth drivers like Prost.
This is about as good as F1 journalism gets. The questions, the way Chris phrases them, the thoughtful answers with the degree of expertise and insight Williams has - I could listen to this for hours on end!
That was THE Pinnacle of the sport. 3.5 V10 manual. The sound and visual drama. Driver skills were paramount! Very unlike contemporary equipment which has more resemblance to playstation than exciting racing. Pitcrew in shorts and no helmets is just a sight to behold 👍👏
Brilliant, just bloody brilliant! Great car with that amazing documented history. Chris, can we please have an extended interview with Jonathon Williams.
What a machine!! I was 13 when this car was winning races, remember watching those races with my dear old dad, thanks for bringing back those memories, miss you Dad, peace
As an F1 nerd of not-quite-FW-13B-acquiring means, I’d love to be able to buy a book like the one presented here. Williams ought to consider a small run of these books for the slightly less well heeled enthusiasts among us.
Wow, that didn’t feel like 17 minutes. I legitimately got goose bumps when the book was shown with the run sheets. Incredible stuff. Please Chris, more of this!

Chris Harris doing best, just been Chris Harris, asking, insightful questions, more importantly, listening and then adding value at every step, we love you, Chris!
The story I heard about Nigel Mansell testing the FW13 was that he told them to put on the softest springs they had and suddenly the car was fast. This story was from Jonathan Williams on Peter Windor's UA-cam channel.
Wow .... what a wonderful film. I am old enough to be around in those days and was always a huge Williams fan. Sublime to see Johnathan being interviewed by Chris. Thank you Collecting Cars !
Jonny should have run the F1 team. Absolute travesty that they pulled D&I on him and put a more politically correct person "in charge". Brilliant interview!
The best era in F1 in my opinion, late 1980's to mid/late 1990's. That howling exotic sound and titanium sparks flying out the back. I can't even care about the modern Formula 1 since they went V6 turbo 😢
This was incredible viewing! A perfect in depth look into not only this beautiful machine but F1 in that era, for a purist this made my week thankyou for uploading this masterpiece for an old school F1 fan

What a great story and a great video. I enyoj watching someone with your passion Chris and your knowledge about motorsport telling stories about history of racing. Great job
The FW13 is largely forgotten by history but it's one of my favourites; that oval air intake is iconic. I'm buying a Euromillions ticket and crossing everything i have.
