All of my friends said the f40 was better. What did we know, we only drove hondas and Pontiacs?I always thought this one was the best. The look, the sound. Of all the Ferrari, this is the one for me.
I remember back in the 90's ( 1998 maybe ? ) when we stopped in Germany in a petrol station. August, beautiful weather. There was a red Ferrari standing there, a few ppl around it , admiring it. The owner comes out of the shop, steps into the car. Starts it up and slowly at idle almost starts driving away from the petrol station. Once he was clear of the cars, he absolutely hammers it trough 3 or 4 gears, sprinting towards the autobahn. Most glorious thing I've heard in my life.
The original test done with the f40 and f50 you did 10 years ago was the best comparison done for these cars EVER, Your enthusiasm and joy testing them was legendary! There is so little information out there for real world tests between these cars ( thanks Ferrrari) That video was the beginning of watching everything you produced. A little late perhaps but thank you for that video!!!!!
If you think about it from a driver's perspective, it's just a given. An amazing old school Ferrari V12, lightweight chassis, pure and analog, engine mounted as a stress member so you can *feel* the revs, targa roof panels so you can *hear* all of that exhaust, spiritual evolution of the near-perfect F40 with a better engine and better overall build and finish. Plus some fitted luggage so it has the ability to do a weekend trip or something. The 288 and F40 I love so much but they're compromised and no where near as visceral. The Enzo I love but it's full of dated tech and has a let down of a gearbox.
And the fact that the F50 was featured in an article with the F40, M600, Zonda F, Murcielago SV, Carrera GT and McLaren F1 in the same story no less says even more.
This was BY FAR my favorite car in the mid-90's. I would just stare at pictures of it all day long. As Chris was rattling off the specs, I still remember all the numbers from when I was a 10 year old kid.

This used to be my favourite car once upon a time because of NFS 2!! I was obsessed with the game and the F50 and always preferred it over the McLaren F1 (and still do. Both in-game and IRL), and I genuinely can't fathom how anyone would ever think this was a disappointment compared to the F40, even though I've seen several people thinking exactly that. And I am so happy that my childhood hero car has in the last few years, started to finally get the praise it always deserved.
I used to adore the F40. But the more i think about F50 the more I say that F50 was THE ultimate Ferrari. All time peak of road cars. Natural Formula 1 V12, manual, open top, hand made by real people from most distinguished company.
The main reason why a big fuss wasn't made when the F50 came out wasn't because of the F40, it's because in the previous year (94) the most insane supercar came out that did 240mph with three seats.
The only brand I compare to Ferrari is Alfa Romeo by the way they dominate in races, after so many years I can accept Porsche (even if they cook same burger from decades) or understand Bugatti's hypercars cause her heritage, I can derail with Corvette an american (cheap) myth, but I can't tollerate McLaren, Lamborghini, Koenigsegg and the others just for (supposed) performance without any background !!! When persons have ideas and values BMW learned the hard way with M1. Countach was a fantastic poster car that in real life try to fly the front end after 230 Km/h like did it before the Miura, so pushed to the limit no match fore Ferrari Daytona or BB, not to mention that they descend from farming equipment as Jonh Deere...
@@robertopiedimonte2078 Mclaren? Performance without background??? The founder raced in formula 1 in the 60s and then made his own team. It's one of the most successful teams in Formula 1 history! They then used their knowledge to build arguably the defining hypercar that held the top speed record for nearly 2 decades, until a car with almost twice the horsepower came along to brute-force it. (oh, and it was originally styled as a Seat prototype race car, look it up!) Lamborghini? Enzo wouldn't sell him a ferrari, so he made his own! The Muira and Countach are some of the most iconic cars around. It's very existence is a middle finger to Ferrari, which I kinda love...and that V12 is legendary, especially in LP640 guise in the Murcielago! Alfa are very much a shadow of their former selves. Anyone who still idolises them is stuck in the past. Ever since the 80s, they've struggled to produce decent cars. They may have the odd flash-in-the-pan moment of brilliance (Giulia QV, 8C competizione, 156 GTA, 164 QV etc) but their hey-day is long gone. They haven't competed in motorsport for decades (their current F1 outfit doesn't count as it's just a badging and commercial exercise with Sauber)
It came out in the shadow of the F1 and didn't seem to know what it wanted to be. It really needed to be smaller, about 200 kg lighter, and much more visually tight to really be a worthy successor to the 40. Still, I'd have one of these over a 40.
I think it's perfect. The thing nobody talks about with the F1 is that it's quite understeery thanks to how much power it has. The car had more power than its 90's tires could handle, so McLaren softened the rear suspension to make the car more manageable (and in so doing, unfortunately, ruining the handling balance). The F50 has the perfect balance of power and grip. It could be a bit lighter, yes, but otherwise, it's perfect.
@@flyingphoenix113 that's the reason why I said I'd have one over a 40. It's just not how the supercar game was played. Really, it still isn't. Who's got the biggest "knob"? If the 50 had matched the size and weight of the F1, along with being properly pretty, there would have been no question as to it status.
@@R03333, I think that's why they're rarely driven hard unless it's on a track with lots of runoff. It's just too valuable to risk an accident. That said, the mixture of sudden onset understeer and snap oversteer have mated quite a few F1s with the nearest compatible tree. 😬
I fell in love with cars in 1995. The cover of Road and Track had the Ferrari 550 Maranello, 355, and F50 on it. Damon Hill wrote the review. Life was never the same for me after that.
The f50 is almost getting up there with the f40 for me. I was gutted when it first came out that it wasn’t faster than it’s rivals and took a real dislike to it. When the f40 came out and hit 200mph it blew everything else away. But the xj220 and mclaren f1 soon had it beat on top speed. I was so looking forward to the f50 to put Ferrari back on top again. But it was only about 1 mph faster than the f40 and I was gutted. However time has passed now and none of that matters and I can appreciate the f50 now for the masterpiece that it is. Better than an f40 though? Hmm maybe give me another few years to appreciate it more
@@hugoagogo9435 yes true. then later in life you perspective change. when i was small i loved the Diablo from the first time i saw it. nobody does supercar like lambo
A curiosity that few people know is that with a few adjustments every F50 can produce more than 700hp like the GT version and with this it has an even higher top speed than the GT! Still take the F40 but the F50 is close!
When I was a kid, somewhere in 1997 I had a poster of an f50 and I thought it was the best looking thing I have ever seen. Later that year my uncle bought me an RC f50... good times

Natural Formula 1 V12, manual, open top, hand made by real people from most distinguished company.
Thank you! Finally someone says it! I have always loved the F50 more than the F40.
f50 is too ugly
Agreed. Much more
1:47 it’s nice to hear someone else say this. I’ve always liked the F50 over the F40 tbh.
Chris never disappoints, amazing content
I know it's gonna flash back that legendary video, 10 years anniversary of that, good job.
The main reason why a big fuss wasn't made when the F50 came out wasn't because of the F40, it's because in the previous year (94) the most insane supercar came out that did 240mph with three seats.
So Proud South Africa had a hand in that wonderful 3 seater
(oh, and it was originally styled as a Seat prototype race car, look it up!)
Lamborghini?
Best sounding street Ferrari ever.
Looking forward to this one!!
This is my favorite car growing up as a kid ❤️🥰😍
@@flyingphoenix113imagine the trouser painting you'd make after experiencing some unexpected understeer in an F1 at their prices
@@R03333, I think that's why they're rarely driven hard unless it's on a track with lots of runoff. It's just too valuable to risk an accident. That said, the mixture of sudden onset understeer and snap oversteer have mated quite a few F1s with the nearest compatible tree. 😬
As many have said before, Chris driving the F50 and F40 remains the BEST car video on UA-cam. Period. Glad to see him drive it again.
I’d take an F50 over a F40! Love them both tho.
Same, F50 is more special car.
F40 looks better, inside and out, but the F50 is the better car.
@@boostav no it doesn't. F50 look better and the interior didn't aged like the F40.
Hmm maybe give me another few years to appreciate it more
topspeed is only for bragging rights. the feel on the road and the theatre is what really matters. hardly anyone hits topspeed in these sort of cars
@@briangriffith3985
Yeah but when your a teenager bragging rights mean a lot. Especially when Mclaren and Lamborghini fans wind you up about it
@@hugoagogo9435 yes true. then later in life you perspective change. when i was small i loved the Diablo from the first time i saw it. nobody does supercar like lambo
This was my first model, and the rain why i love cars, the color red and Ferrari. Absolutely gorgeous.
Harris is having a Dave Letterman phase
Always love when Chris Harris pours out his enthusiasm!
Beautiful piece of engineering indeed.
Hoping for more videos!
A curiosity that few people know is that with a few adjustments every F50 can produce more than 700hp like the GT version and with this it has an even higher top speed than the GT! Still take the F40 but the F50 is close!
F50 is also more rigid and has room for larger tires. The car just has more potential.
Yes.. please explain how a "few adjustments" can extract an extra 200hp+ from a relatively small NA 4.7 L motor? How would you do it?
@@papa_pttwin turbo
@@papa_pt Camshaft, pistons, forced induction. But it would cost $20k
@@ByronWWW yup...small adjustments lol
love how the F50 looks, just very iconic and insane and a great take on the previous F40.
*Better than the F40 in my opinion*
When I was a kid, somewhere in 1997 I had a poster of an f50 and I thought it was the best looking thing I have ever seen. Later that year my uncle bought me an RC f50... good times
Not seeing much of Chris these days, sadly.
Anything With Harris Driving is a Must See 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
F40 vs F50.... GOOD OLD TIMES... I keep rewatching that once in a while... 🤘🤘🤘
Mr. Harris, this video was very enjoyable. Thank You Very Much.
I'd love you to drive a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT on this show, as it may be the closest direct competitor to the Ferrari F50. After all, the Ferrari Enzo did not have a manual transmission.
I had F50 bedsheets as a kid so for me this has always been the peak Ferrari. If I ever manage to make the money to buy one I think I'd drive it everywhere
Ooh! So good to see Dunsfold again! ( which is a weird thing to say for an F-50 video) What a great looking and sounding car! I think there might be another V-12 supercar lurking around there. Anyway, Someone is going to be very happy with that F-50!
year by year, it deserved its own appreciation. the last raw ferrari-F1 car for the road
Chris You still are the best presenter of these cars period..
Chris Harris is a respectful man and the most professional car reviewer ever 👌🏻
Chris Harris + Ferrari F50 + Top Gear Test Track = Must Watch
Glad you mentioned the interior, one of my favourite super car interiors- beautiful in it's simplicity.
Being born early 90s this was the car of my dreams growing up, so happy to see some love where it mostly lies in the shade of the F40!
That noise is something else 😍👌🏻
Thank you Andy, Thank you Chris.
Awesome that the F50 is getting this amount of appreciation! Always have been my absolute favourite! What a car. V12 with a stick, and that body... What a dream....
PS: watching Chris Harris talk about cars is an absolute delight!
Damn. 1995 car and this was doing 0-60 in 3.8 s. Gorgeous to boot. This was a car well before its time.
