Always admired Patrick Head for not only his brilliant technical achievements in Motorsport but also his honest and modest attitude and always giving credit to others on the technical team who worked on the concepts. Bloody brilliant interview, also liked the word association.

Absolutely brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed that and I could have listened and listened. Such eloquent answers to the questions posed. Especially fascinated to hear about the Honda period and also learning more about Nigel Mansell.
I'd love to have learnt more about why Damon was treated so badly (and Nigel too), these guys had such success with the team yet they weren't able to defend the championships they had won. I think Patrick touched on it and you could sense some regret. Hope to hear more on that for the next installments, as you definitely need to get Patrick back as he was obviously willing to talk for even longer.
    Thanks again for this 👍

PLEASE write that autobiography Sir Patrick! You're one of the foremost F1 heroes, from what is now recognised more and more as one of the golden ages of F1. What an incredible memory! So ludicrously sharp. I can barely believe the amount of detail you're able to recall seemingly as if it were yesterday. Williams have always been my favourite team, born from the personalities of Sir Frank and Sir Patrick and from growing up watching Nigel throw his William's around the tracks like a man possessed. That was such an enjoyable interview, it could have gone on and one 3 or 4 times the length and would not have become boring. I always thought Sir Patrick was this no nonsense gruff character but it turns out he is an amazingly considered, calm, insightful charming man. Thanks Motorsport for letting him talk. The questions were just prompts to get him talking in such wonderful detail. Brilliant.

Agree totally. There are any number of interviews with Adrian Newey, but that is for 2 reasons- his impressive talent as an aerodynamicist, and because he is the recent darling of F1. I could listen to Sir Patrick, and others of his era, for hours, just for the insights into the intricacies of competing at that level, and being forced to innovate in the ways that they did, as opposed to the stale, over-regulated environment of today.

I have watched Patrick’s career with enormous interest. First met him many years ago when BUMC were doing small night rallies, even spent a night marshalling with him in his red Hillman Imp with no windows because he’d rolled it. Years later was driving from Huntingdon to Gamlingay one Friday evening in my red Lotus Elan and had a great dice with a dark red Alfa. Wondered at the time if it was Patrick, like to think it was.

I really think Sir Patrick should do an autobiography. At least a technical document of the years in F1. I remember long time ago Autosport had an appendix of the FW07 - and I loved it. Read it through maybe 20 times until all the pages came off :))) I think there was later a similar about the active car, with Needell (?) giving it a go.
Unfortunately Team Willy never hired me but I did get some help for my master’s thesis from Brian O’Rourke and visited Didccot a couple of times and later a couple of times in Didcot and Grove as an occasional freelance journo (=failed race car designer :)))).
In the early 1980s I could have told by just seeing a part whose work it was. Bacause all these guys/organisations had their own design language. Williams always appeared to me as the ultra-pragmatic car, Barnards cars were obsessive perfection and Murray was the individual Herbert Humdinger. Forghieri had lots of cast parts - sort of 60s look in many things. I aspired a chance to work in a team - and my dream team would have been Team Willy because I liked the way it worked. It was really the sweet period when the teams turned from garagistas to expert organisations by starting to hire experts under the chief designer/tech director.
I was attending a FOCA test in 1989 or 1990 as a journo, actually as a guest of Team Willy. It was the FW13 era with Boutsen. I had a chance to look at the cars very near, almost all of them. Two things stick out from my memory: I fell in love with the AGS because it was cute and obviously done with a 1/10 of the money of the second cheapest car. It had even aluminium hubs! The other thing was the quality of the Alan Jenkins designed Arrows. I think Brawn was also related to that car. Qualitywise, I think it was the best, even better than the McLaren and Williams. If I remember correctly Team Willy tried the Tyrrell type coupled front suspension with the lateral slide at that test.
At that visit I also saw the Specialized Moulding wind tunnel - and being an educated aerodynamicist, frankly, it did not impress me :))))
But really, when I think of all that, I really would appreciate a book by Sir Patrick. I mean, Barnard did one, Murray did one, Forghieri did one, Southgate, Bennett and Norbert Singer did theirs. Surely, we need a book by Sir Patrick.

I know I am an absolute amateur/enthusiast but it doesn’t prevent me from having an opinion. For me Patrick Head is the embodiment of what was great about Williams and why they rose to such dominance, at the same time I feel that his ways also is telling to as why they have declined in the later years.
When I hear about Williams in their forming years it seems like their rapid rise was because they had attracted brilliant and young persons like Dernie and Head. The entire operation was very frugal and efficient in regard to spending money every penny was used to improve car performance. In the interview the story of how they got their first wind tunnel with rolling road is told for almost nothing and the adapted to their usage almost like a diy project. This concept of using the money where they bring the biggest gains is wonderful if money supply is is limited. In the 1980’s and 1990’s this was the case. In the new millennium formula one budgets exploded and the Patrick Heads frugality formula turned against them, because when you have an open budget you can use fantasilions of pounds on some minor component change which only makes small improvements on the car. With the budgets in formula 1 in the last 20 years frugality has been out. Only performance at no cost mattered. Maybe the coming budget cap, in formula one, could make the old winning Head/Williams formula winning again. It will take some time because more sponsors will have to be found. Difficult in these days but probably possible. I wish Head and the Williams team all the best.

Is that because no drivers deaths have been gone into or just Sennas due to his being the last F1 crash that caused a death with the controversy involved?

Just a reminder: The Italian Court of Appeal, on 13 April 2007, stated the following in the verdict numbered 15050: "It has been determined that the accident was caused by a steering column failure. This failure was caused by badly designed and badly executed modifications. The responsibility of this falls on Patrick Head, culpable of omitted control." Even being found responsible for Senna's accident, Head was not arrested because in Italy, the statute of limitation for manslaughter is 7 years and 6 months, and the final verdict was pronounced 13 years after the accident

    • @djh29971
      @djh29971 11 місяців тому +1

Everyone knows that was just a box ticking exercise from the Italian authorities knowing it was meaningless. Williams were the pinnacle of engineering and to even suggest that the steering column broke before impact is ridiculous. Senna drove too fast for the conditions and lost downforce (ride height/racing line) in a nervous car and had very, very bad luck. Several top line drivers crashed there and got away with it, but sadly Senna did not. Michael had the mental edge on Senna that season and I still think would have won had Senna lived.

Patrick and Frank, built the most Tecnicallogy advanced F1 car there ever was, but, it took some of the skills away from an F1 Driver. They mostly just had to work the pedals and turn the steering wheel. The car had to be banned and so it was. I have a lot of respect for Williams and the people who work for them and the Drivers who drove for them. Nigel is my favourite. There is no better example of his unique rapid control of an F1 car other than the one in Australia when the tyre exploded at very high speed. If he had not done what he did, there could have been a very serious accident. The back end of the car wanted to go left or right and Nigel was not going to let it. I have enjoyed the Podcasts I have watched so far and this one has to be the best so far. Martin (Thailand)

The working relationship between Alan Jones and Patrick Head was an unusually close driver/designer relationship. They both complemented each other a great deal. The sheer size of today's teams prevents that sort of relationship happening again. Everyone in the sport in 1981 said the same thing when Jones announced his retirement from F1.... he was retiring way too soon. But he'd had a gut full of the FIA politics apparently.

Great interview Mr Head. Only that when answering the question as to why the Williams team isn't doing as well as it used to you, conveniently forgot to give the real reason, which is that you and Frank caused Adrian Newy to leave. Adrian mentions this in his book, in which he describes both Patrick and Frank as being 'creatures of habit'. As well as the issue being covered in other UA-cam videos. You and Frank did things and made decisions behind his back. You told him that you would never do it again, but did. Williams went down hill immediately after Adrian Newy left and simultaneously McLaren dominated, then later Redbull dominated after Adrian went to work there. Williams never recovered after they lost Adrian. Frank Williams admitted years later that they should have allowed Adrian access to big decision making and given him stock in the company. Patrick Head would be more of a man if he would just admit openly to this huge mistake. We all make mistakes but not everyone can admit to them.

History shows of course the 1987 decision to not take on Nakajima in 1988 was the wrong decision. For 1988 McLaren had the low profile engine, they won 15 out of 16 races, and Williams had a terrible season with the Judd engine. Sure, they kept Nigel Mansell, but Nelson Piquet left the team for Lotus in 1988 and it's very clear Team Williams erred in their negotiations.

Honda decided to switch to lotus for 87 as they were unhappy with the failure to secure the drivers championship in 1986.Piquet going to lotus for 88,meant honda had the current world champion running for them still, honda financed the replacement judd engines for 1988 due to them ending the williams partnership early.

Patrick, what happened in Vegas 1981? Why did you guys give Reutemann a wrecked cart to fight the last race of the championship?
Patrick, why did you give the best car to Jones who didn't fight at all?
Patrick, what happened when you guys opened up the gearbox and found that a couple of the gears were broken and out of oil? I remember that you said that there was no problem, but there were people who saw it and said so.
Patrick, Patrick, Patrick... why did F. Williams change tires (from Michelin to Good Year) in the middle of the championship when with Michelin
Reutemann he had scored many points and with Good Year only 12?
Patrick, do you still believe that we Argentines and many others in the world believe that Lole lost the championship due to a state of mind?
Lole Reutemann had already told a journalist that he was not going to win the championship, but he always kept the truth to himself... but the truth always comes out.
YOU SABOTAGED HIS CHAMPIONSHIP BECAUSE LOLE DID NOT LET JONES PASS, THAT DAMN MEDIOCRE, WHICH THE WORD CHAMPION FITS VERY BIG.
PS 1: You can fight against a great rival. You can fight against your teammate... but you will never be able to against your own team because in the end, your team will screw up the championship, how, when and wherever they want to do it.

The man is a genius. Period. But you can tell he will always try to make yo think Alan Jones and Nigel Mansell were top top drivers when reality dictates neither both of them are among the best Top Ten Formula One drivers of all times. I can see clearly now why he likes so much Jones and Mansell but truth is when Patrick says "I'd put Nigel right in there with Prost and Senna - same level." he is actually overestimating Mansell in such way.....I mean we're talking about Senna and Prost both of them among the best five racing drivers of all times without a single doubt and quite arguably among the best three best drivers of all times with Fangio. To put Nigel Mansell at that level means you have blinded thoughts on the matter in this case bacause Mansell is the driver with more wins at Williams hence Patrick Head is trying to make you think Mansell was one of the best racing drivers of all times which, I'm sorry, is not the case. And quite clearly Nelson Piquet was way better than Mansell and you can tell Piquet was right when he always said the team (Patrick Head) was always behind Mansell. Frank Dernie is telling the true when he says Nelson was faster than Mansell on a regular bases at least before Nelson's accident at San Marino 1987. Nelson recover from that and was always faster than Mansell in many circuits including British circuits. Nelson always outqualified Mansell at Silverstone and Brands Hatch when they were teammates. With the team behind Nelson they'd have won the 1986 drivers championship without a single doubt. Nelson was smart enough to win the 1987 drivers championship anyway despite not being consider number one driver at any point of his time in the Williams team. Nelson Piquet was a genius and Nigel Mansell could be really fast if he was inspired. But let me remind all of you even Riccardo Patrese outqualified Mansell in 1991. 10 to 6 in the whole 16 races that year including the first seven races in-a-row and with 4 poles by Patrese against just 2 poles for Mansell throughout that year. So yes, Mansell was really fast but....not always the fastest driver. He was quite spectacular on sundays like Gilles was back in the day but Mansell, like Gilles, used to make lots of mistakes from time to time and never knew to use his head in the race. Mansell was always thinking with his right foot instead thinking with his head. Mansell drove the best car of the season in five differents years: 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991 and 1992. He only won one championship with that super tech Williams FW14B and Mansell got Williams Team preference all those years but 1990 when Alain Prost was clearly the best racing driver of the Ferrari team and that's why the team was behind Prost. And when he chooses Alain Jones as his favorite driver you can see why Carlos Reutemann didn't make it in 1981. Jones was the happiest man in the world at the end of the race at Las Vegas. It was the payback Alan Jones was demanding and Jones was able to make it thanks to Patrick Head. Reutemann couldn't race that saturday at Las Vegas with the car on wich he made pole position because of an accident during friday qualy with Nelson Piquet's Brabham. So Reutemann lost that great car and had to use the spare car which was another chasis. The main problem was the gearbox. Reutemann told Patrick Head the gearbox was damage. Head went to Reutemann and said: "Gearbox is ok. We checked the gearbox and it's ok". Truth is Reutemann missed almost 4 or 5 gears per lap during the race. It was a miracle Reutemann didn't brake the gearbox and was able to ended up on P8 that race on lap behind Jones. That week after the race Patrick Head phoned Reutemann to tell Carlos they went to the factory looked the gearbox and found it was damaged just like Carlos told Head BEFORE the race. It was a bad joke by Head phoning Reutemann to tell what Carlos already knew even that saturday morning before the race started (they didn't race on sunday at Las Vegas. Instead they raced on saturday and first qualy was thursday when Reutemann made pole position and second qualy was on a hot friday when Carlos had an accident with Nelson Piquet and nobody couldn't be able to improve the times of thursday).
