Wanted to see how the Gray storyline would finish and I haven’t watched it since, but they have to give Phil a good send off when he retires. He’s a legend of the soap. Grant broke that and introduced Phil to his darker behaviours in full force. His resentment, pettiness and manipulative ruthlessness was always there. But he was patient and much more in control than grant. Grant even if more confrontational. Was only really bad to ppl in the moment and then dropped it unless you gave him a reason. Grant never really held grudges until what happened with Sharon and Phil. When the car crash situation occurred. Their personalities due to the trauma, switched and whilst grant managed to heal somewhat by travelling away and whatnot. He started Phil down his villainous route.

He was always reasonable with a fair amount of selfishness (affair with Sharon, alcoholism) before that but after Kathy left with Ben, he became unhinged. Mark Fowler said it best when Sharon came back in 2001 “Ever since Kathy left, something got twisted”.
Yeah true, Kathy leaving completely changed Phil. It was the first time truly seeing the cruel, sadistic, dark depths Phil could stoop too and tbh that hasn’t changed since. I know a lot of people on the show thought Grant was worse but I don’t think that’s true at all, he has a raging temper sure but he had a good heart underneath that and he always shorted remorse and regret for his actions. Phil on the other hand is a manipulative, cold-hearted bully who loves bullying people weaker than him and enjoys the power trip of controlling the square through fear and intimidation. I’d say Phil was always worse by far, he always had a dark side but that was brought to the forefront after Kathy left.
