I don’t watch it Eastenders anymore but used to watch it at about the turn of the century to 2005 and Phil Mitchell was in his prime then. Steve Macfadden played the role of Phil Mitchell brilliantly. When he loses his temper or gets himself drunk I do find it unintentionally hilarious at times.
Phil Mitchell in (2000-2003) was definitely his prime Years. Dominating the whole square, menacing, violent, a bully and utterly heartless. A fascinating character to watch during that time... Steve Mcfadden played the villianous role so well. Without a doubt a legendary character... you just can't imagine Eastenders without him.
Agreed, it was also more interesting back then as he wasn’t written as completely invincible, he did come off worse a couple of times such as against Dan Sullivan and then when den set him up and forced him out of the square

Phil was on fire last year I mean Lewis. Peggy's bar fight. Beating the hell out of jonna (if that's how you spell his name) and the keeble storyline teaming with keanu...I absolutely loved every minute of it I think we need more of that 😉
Phil could be as brutal as brutal gets when it came to cold heartedness and getting in to peoples heads. Sometimes that’s worse then a punch. Phil’s end has to be brutal when Steve finally retires and all his ghosts have to come back to haunt him. A Soprano’s final season type of trailer with Phil looking out as he thinks about all his sins and all those past voices would be cool as he stands on the spot where he dies as a metaphor for his final appearance only we don’t know yet that it’s the spot he dies until the end of the show. Almost like this isn’t Phil staring out but it’s Phil’s ghost trapped in this state of limbo.

He did bad things but wasn’t a bad person. Phil allowed a beef with Johnny Allen to be used as an excuse to manipulate the likes of Dennis just to get what he wants. As Phil was actually acting out of spite and didn’t care about other innocent ppl not involved with his personal beef. Very tony soprano like actually in his manipulative and more evil nature here. Especially as he uses Dennis to achieve his goals. But yeah its ironic too since Phil is built up as this big bad guy that could kill someone but had to use Dennis to do it.
90s Phil was a lot more level-headed but he also had to keep Grant in check or clean up his mess. The 00s Phil wanted to control the square. Some of his actions were questionable and that's why people see him as a coward, but his role wasn't always being the physical thug who beats people black and blue, it was about the mind games, especially with Dennis Snr., the levels he'd occasionally stoop to against those he knows he can't physically beat in a fight and just overall attempting to assert his dominance. After the Vic was sold to the Carters, he cared less about dominating and monopolising the Square's main assets and more about letting his rivals know that he isn't completely washed up in every sense, although his age meant that he wasn't the physical force he once was. This decade, as he's now in his 60s, seems to be about chaotically settling down, though I still believe that he won't last the year with Kat unless they plan to permanently write Alfie out of her life and finding a storyline that sees her finally lose patience with Phil.
