Yes! Gattaca had a look, feel and story line that reminded me of some of the really good original Twilight Zone and Outer Limits, with no burdening and distracting effects - just great acting and a compelling story line.
By what measure is Gattaca underrated? It is very highly rated and has won several awards. And it is a cult classic even if it performed poorly at the box office. Plus it is one that people always talk about. The movies on this list half of them I never even heard about. I would much rather have a list of movies that many people missed than a list of movies everyone talks about.
John McDonald the poor box office sales and being a lack of household name is what makes it underrated. Underrated doesn't mean not good it means not that many people have heard of it compared to how great it was. it should be far more well-known.
You seem to misunderstand my point. Gattaca is not underrated. It has won 6 of the 11 awards it was nominated for, it has mostly positive reviews. And it tops many a best sci-fi list. That is the very definition of well known. This is a list of movies people don't know because people barely talk about them. I don't know who you hang around but I have talked to people I thought had little to no interest in sci-fi that knew Gattaca.
Gattaca is another excellent film, not sure if it falls under the sci fi category. Nonetheless, Jude Law, Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman give some of their best performances.
@@wingerding not only, Gattaka is about strength to develop oneself and to struggle desperately making one's dreams true in any circumstances, it is about choice of what and who you gonna be that makes difference (last scenes of two brothers was amazing)
I don't know what people think science fiction is? Starships battleing in the space? Time travelling? Aliens? It's much more than that. One of the best underrated sci-fi (B) movies I ever seen, there was not a single "space/cosmos" scene, not a single fire, none sofisticated gizmo/technology, no aliens and the very unique time travelling was the same every single one of us is able to experience. It's called aging. As a matter of fact, almost of the entire movie consists in a group of college teachers reunned in a living room just talking...
I loved that movie too. The action sequence helped inspired a scene in the anime of a robot killing Vampires in rapid movements like from the intro. I'm happy that I own the movie for Blu-Ray.
+Jake Rollingson I think if you're going to include a Chris Bale movie they should have included Reign of Fire....Better and more original than Equilibrium. Equilibrium would not exist if it wasn't trying to be the Matrix and it has a lot of Ok What moments.
Do you even know about "The Thirteenth Floor"? This movie is epic. Released in same year as matrix in 1999, it was over shadowed by matrix but it is as good as matrix. Anyone who is a fan of sci-fi must watch the one.
+Harry S Yea I would've liked to see the 13th Floor at like number 10 thru 7 on this list. Great movie. One of my favorites. I almost wish it was a ten episode mini-series that expanded more on the world in 1937 Los Angeles, and if you could go into the simulation for as long as you wanted.
After first matrix matrix become crap and one of the brothers become sister. They prefer to gain money rather to film good sequels (Martix 2 was relatively ok). They had cool scenarios for sequels, but changed them to make more money. Greedy fucks.
+Harry S I honestly think The Thirteenth Floor beat The Matrix to the punch on what was supposed to be the The Matrix's own ending. That is to say, I'm totally convinced that it was the Wachowski's orginal intention to reveal that the "real world" in their film(s) actually turns out to be another "layer" of matrix. A matrix within a matrix, if you will. That premise would've perfectly explained a bunch of the shit in the Matrix sequels that made no sense, like Neo having "matrix-like" powers outside the matrix. And from a practical standpoint (as far as The Matrix universe goes), if you're an artificial hyper-intelligence trying to enslave mankind essentially through some kind of super-real virtual reality, what's the best security safeguard against the possibility of some of those humans "waking up" (which the machines had to know was a possibility)? Another false-reality layer on top of the first. But then Thirteenth Floor kinda did that idea before the Wachowski's got around to their ending, pretty much forcing them to do something different with The Matrix. Just my opinion. But I do think The Matrix would've wrapped up much neater with a Thirteenth Floor type of ending. It would've just made more sense.
Logan's Run, Hunter Prey, Zero Theorem, Soylent Green, Lifeforce, Deepstar Six. Outlander, The Quiet Earth, Dark City, The City of Lost Children and Brazil. That's a pretty good list as well.
MOVIE PUNDIT does Caviezel go back in time in that one, to a viking era or maybe germanic tribe it's coming back to me now some kind of alien that preys on the tribe maybe caviziel was hunting it in the future am i close?
Thanks for the list watchmojo I've not seen or heard of any of these apart from Moon. Its funny i saw a top ten underrated sci fi movie video list yesterday on another youtube channel and they put Moon at number ten, I definetly agree it should be nearer 1 than ten. Also Solaris is worth a mention I think.
+nOnOy borbun Yeah I was wondering if perhaps Dark City wasn't underrated and that's why it's not here. I think it's acknowledged as one of the greats. Predates The Matrix, and is in my all-time top 10.
I agree - this is one of their best and most palatable! I normally don't much care for the woman's narration of these - sometimes to where as much as I'd like to continue watching and get the data, I have to turn it off. I would say this is the best that she has ever done - it's the 1st time I could tolerate her pretty much all the way through and she didn't go over the top with sarcasm, etc. :-)
So you think that even toilet paper commercials need to be in 4K so you can understand them. 720P is more than enough, 480P is ok for most, but of course, not from (modern/mainstream) technical point of view. You are lucky that they are not in 144P
Holy crap. I've searched for years for the title of the film on this list "The Silent Running". But I only watched the film when I was very, very young. So all I could remember was the Robot being taught to smoke. So everytime I googled "Smoking Robot" I'd be led to a page on Bender from Futurama. Thank you for solving that age old question of mine. That film always resonated strongly for me. And as you can tell, I never quite forgot it.
Clyde Rain i must be a wee bit older than you; i remembered 1st & foremost the 3 robots that hang with Bruce Dern. i cried for them when i 1st saw the movie!😢
+Bishop Howells . Had to keep scrolling the comments to see if anyone else mentioned "The Quiet Earth". Good sci-fi doesn't have to be loaded up with expensive FX :-}
Enemy Mine was extremely good. I usually don't like too many dramatic sci-fi movies unless they blend well, but I found Enemy Mine did fantastic at blending the drama with the science fiction. Louis Gossett, Jr and Dennis Quaid had brilliant chemistry in this movie.
Yes, I thought Enemy Mine deserves more than an honorable mention and didn't know it was "underrated". I thought it was kind of a cult classic. Everyone I've ever known who saw it really liked it.
@@debraprince4511 One of the few that me and all my friends plus our parents thought was great. I've shown it to girlfriends that were younger than me and missed it, everyone loves Enemy Mine. How many times do people cry during Sci-fi?
So many great films that could have been mentioned: Children of Men... The Way We live Now... Threads..... Bicentennial Man... What Dreams May Come... Demolition Man (really corny but Wesley Snipes was hilarious in it) Two Mules for Sister Sarah... Megaforce.. Flash Gordon... Earth Girls are Easy... Soylent Green... Battle Beyond the Stars... A Boy and His Dog.... Warriors of the Winds...
Moon was a friggin badass movie. I really love the films you think are just utter shit because it has 1 actor, in 1 room and you watch it and are blown away.
Yes, quite underrated. (Though for those who like just eye-candy, such a movie may not be for them. (Unless they got a thing for Alicia Vikander, but she ain't nude in this one guys.)
Dune should have been in this list. Based on Frank Herbert's novel, it stars Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: TNG), Kyle McLaughlin (Twin Peaks) and Sting (The Police). Brilliant scenery, great acting and a powerful storyline makes this one of the most underrated movies of all time.
Silent Running is the best for me. Unforgettable beginning and end and everything in between. A film that has stayed with me since I watched it in 70s as a young boy. Glad to see its getting some sort of recognition now as it didn't at the time but then Sci fi was very much a minority interest before star wars came around.
Bruce Dern was known for playing bad guys but 'Silent Running' made me love him in all his roles. It's a truly underrated film that still holds up today. I remember wanting to cry at the end because Huey, Dewey & Louie had become real to me and I didn't want Dewey to be lonely.
"Cube" was a good paranoia movie that was, for the most part, impossible. "Cube 2" was more solid sci-fi with an attempt to show a hypercube (a four-dimensional "cube") which, ultimately, was more satisfying, to me. I've not seen the third, although I'm told it's truly horrible.
There's one very obscure but brilliant sci-fi film that's not on this list. It's lower in budget than all the films on this list, but it's every bit as compelling in its concept. It's a movie called "The Man From Earth."
since everyone loved it and had glowing revies never though it was underrated. although why on earth the Directors Cut doesn't get much love I have no idea. it's way better than the theatrical. Really awkward only way to keep it is on vudu. Blu ray not so much
I watched it maybe 5 years ago, apart from the visuals I've forgotten everything that happened. not sure if I'm getting senile or if the story was forgettable
2010 Primer Heavy Metal Mr. Nobody Silent Running Equilibrium Strange Days eXistenZ Sunshine Moon Honorable Mentions Sphere Titan A.E. Enemy Mine Pitch Black Stalker
+Steve -O the scene when they are all watching Mercury pass the Sun.. The score is so haunting, the photography is so brilliant! The camera even focuses on the actor's wrist watch.. Like a metaphor for time. Simply superb.
"Enemy Mine" was a movie I just took randomly at a Videoshop to lease and man was I surprised how good that movie was. One of my favorite Sci-Fi movies .
It's one of the many films inspired by the books (in this case a short story) by Philip K Dick. More famous examples would include "Blade Runner" and "Total Recall". I read the short story the latter was based on ("We can remember it for you wholesale") and at the end was left thinking, WTF?
“Moon” is one of the most over-rated SF movies of all time. I still can’t believe it was given a Hugo Award. A fellow longtime fan and I saw it together shortly after it opened. All the way through we kept turning to each other to whisper, “But that doesn’t make sense!” The writer/director's intentions were good, but he didn’t really understand SF extrapolation. Instead, he arbitrarily assembled a bunch of SF tropes and linked them with an illogical plot. Both the basic premise and the “big surprise” are utterly ridiculous. The whole setup makes no scientific or economic sense.
You covered many favorites, thank you. Two that were missed that are high on my list are... 2009's Pandorum starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster is a masterpiece that remains on my best sci fi of all time list. The other is Supernova starring James Spader, Angela Bassett, Lou Diamond Phillips, Robin Tunney and Robert Forster. This film had amazing visuals, flawless acting, brilliant twists and the fate of the universe spinning out of control as they hurtle toward a star going supernova. It bombed, critics thrashed it but I don't care. While it ranks significantly lower than Pandorum on my list... I love that film. It resides in my regular sci fi rotation right beside all my other favorites including several that were featured here. :) Awesome selections y'all :)
THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR!!! - better philosophical message than Matrix and was released two months prior back in 1999!!! SHOCKING THIS WAS LEFT OUT TOP POSITION
+majinraptor I watched most of them. And Sunshine isn't my favorite. It is fun to watch to but the plot holes are miles deep if you understand anything about space physics.
I'm glad that Stalker got a mention. It's not only a really intriguing film but it's also introduced me to a completely different culture and way of thinking... can;t think of many films that have had such an impact on me.
+Phil Hunter it's based in the area where the chernobyl accident happened. It's about people called stalkers who effectively live in the area after visiting it and becoming attached to it. It's a bit difficult to describe without giving away too much.
Equilibrium is awesome... another underrated movie is "Prospect" (2018), "Thirteenth Floor" (1999) is fantastic!, "Cloud Atlas" (2012), "Starman" (1984), "Dark City" (1998), "Midnight Special" (2016), and "Oblivion" (2013) to name a few GREAT UNDERRATED FILMS 🎥
I'm glad that Equilibrium made the list. I also think you should have acknowledged the Monty Python alum, Terry Gilliam, who directed two other awesome sci fi films: Brazil and 12 Monkeys. One minor note, which other people may have already addressed: I'm also glad that Heavy Metal made the list. However, it seems people misunderstand the title, which is NOT based on the music in the film. Rather, the film is based on the adult animated magazine Heavy Metal, which contains some of the best illustrating and writing I have ever seen.
Totally agree with that . 12 Monkeys ain´t underrated . It has something special , that I always get stuck in it , when it´s showed on TV . I just always was wondering , why the Character of Madeline Stowe kept saying " I remember You too" , since for her , it wasn´t the past :)
Did you really try to say that Brazil is underrated. I am yet to see a top 100 best movies list that doesn't mention Brazil and it was Nominated for 2 Oscars .
Filip Cordas No I definitely think Brazil is an amazing film, one of the best dystopian films I have ever seen. And, yes it did win awards and has made many people's lists. I'm just saying that sometimes critically acclaimed films can be under appreciated by the average, undiscriminating film viewer. It seems I have struck a nerve with other Brazil fans with my comments. I never meant to say Brazil is not a high quality film. It certainly is. I was just wondering how many other people truly appreciate the film and Terry Gilliam as an accomplished film maker.
***** Well it's a pretty old move now, but I still know many people who have never heard of it. It's not the first Sci-Fi movie that comes to peoples minds, which is why I think it's underrated.
Wow, Stalker just honorably mentioned ? The Genius of a Director Andrej Tarkovski made this Diamond of a movie as well as Solaris (Steven Soderbergh tried it again 2002), that wasn't even mentioned here. Stalker for sure is no Film for the masses, since it's one of the deepest philosophical movies ever made and for the most people nowadays pretty difficult to follow, since it's almost a deep brain Meditation, but if you can follow the story and love to be drawn into an unique Artwork of it's own, then don't miss it. Other unmentioned SF movies worth watching is Dark Star, Outland and Dark City. What about a scanner darkly or Johnny Mnemonic ? Akira or Brazil ? Lifeforce and Black hole ? District 9 or Kpax ? Underrated but great SF Movies for sure.
2010 is a great movie with a mighty cast ... John Lithgow, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban and Roy Sheider. And of course the wonderful voice of Douglas Rain.
THX 1138 from Lucas. It's THE single most underrated good sci-fi, in fact so underrated that it couldn't even get into a video about underrated sci-fi movies :P
+1 for that, its an amazing film and deserves a lot more recognition than it gets (I think everyone has forgotten that Lucas actually made movies before he made Star Wars...)
THX 1138 has a great line from Donald Pleasence's character who is the only one seemingly benefiting from the completely controlled surveiled, computer intruded world. "Why are you smiling all the time?" "Because I'm the one who programs the computers." Still hugely relevant! I guess I think it gets recognition from Sci-Fi fans, though, so I understand why it's not on the list.
+Kevin Kral Silent Running was a great film in spite of the fact that the little Celestron telescope could not have gotten the detail of Earth that was shown from that distance. I like Joan Baez's voice.
Never seen Silent Running, but was very pleased to see Strange Days mentioned. It's a great film, and I've loved it since I first saw it on tape after it went to video. Angela Bassett is so amazingly kick ass and amazing in this movie! i had such a girl crush on her!
I actually agree with this to a point. I think equilibrium should have been number 1 simply because it is just as good as any major film (seriously, its as good as any award winning sci fi action film), has a great story but, like, nobody knows about it. its on netflix. I'd say pitch black should have been way up there but, it really wasn't under rated once the chronicles of riddick became a thing.
Some interesting points you guys have got. I agree that Equilibrium just came out at the wrong time, so everyone just compared it to The Matrix. but then, if it weren't for that film, Equilibrium wouldn't exist. Pitch Black should definitely be on the list. I think it was superior to the other Riddick films, as it had a more human feel to it. It didn't have the silly 'magic' that the other films had. I'm surprised not to see Coherence on here though. Especially since Primer was. If you guys haven't seen it, I'd recommend it.
swamdono I saw Equilibrium on Netflix. at the final battle I'm like, "Wait. How is this on Netflix? Netflix usually has the shitty sequels or B movies. This is EXcellent!" I was pleasantly surprised with everything from the acting to the scenes and choreography. As far as dystopian movies go, its one of the best IMO. You can tell they put a good amount of thought into it. Equilibrium should have gotten at least as much press as Minority Report.
Public library and your friendly neighbourhood bootleg stores are the best places to get all underrated, overrated or whatever rated movies. I don't get bound by Netflix of whatever I want to watch
Strawberryknight I wouldn't either except my wife's work friend assigned her to his account so we get it free. Ya know....free electronic babysitter...I'm all for that.
+Broseph Argon it came to theaters in Florida in between the matrix sequels I thought it was amazing but both times I went to see it I was the only one in the theater
Here's one: Solaris (1972). From the same guy who made Stalker, this is a scifi movie that makes you think. Majority have propably never seen it but it definitely is a hidden gem in scifi movies history.
I didn't like it. Full of holes. I would rather watch "Requeim For Methuselah" from the original Star Trek series. It certainly made a statement about University Academics and our public school system though. A great concept and could be a great Sci-Fi movie but not this one. 2/10.
I think the antagonist was really random but I don't think it was that out of place. He realised that all things come to an end and by completing his mission he is interfering with nature. He wanted to let the chips to fall where they may. That's a genuine thing to think about and it drove his character mad. I really loved the setup of the movie. How there was Icarus 1 and how they found it and shit
Moon is one of my favorite movies. I constantly recommend it to people and I’m always amazed that almost no one has seen it. Sam Rockwell’s performance in Moon is fantastic.
@@lisagulick4144 I agree, I first saw it in the cinema, The end when the robot Dewie is seen lovingly watering the plants with the old watering can. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. Even the toughest men, were balling their eyes out. The soundtrack is simply amazing too. Using Joan Baez was inspired.
The director of wall-e said he was inspired by this movie. He also used the valley forge console design for the escape pod in wall-e among other things.
Bruce Dern is amazingly underrated. He’s played some excellent roles, but my favourite will always be Mr. Rumsfield in “The ‘Burbs.” “They’re daring each other to ring the doorbell!” 😄
Dark city is badass sci-fi. For Dune to not be number one makes this crap anyhow. Dune is the best movie ever made, just takes a higher lever thinker to abstract it's perfection and that's a Lynch Hallmark.
I remember watching it years ago and thinking "Awesome, Sean Bean is in it" right before he dies. Then I just thought it was weak - and when Christian Bale's character says "I have no feelings for this table" my friends and I burst into fits of laughter...Not his greatest movie for me.
+Rami Al Ahmad I loved Event Horizon, I still do, it was shocking, and trippy, but all in all I'll even admit that it was a bad movie. Want to watch Event Horizon done right, this list's #2 spot Sunshine gave me everything Event Horizon gave me but at a higher quality(story, dialogue, acting, effects, just everything was superior) but Event Horizon still has a place in my heart as well.
Outland is High Noon in space. It's an enjoyable film, but some of the plot developments are idiotic, like the two greatest assassins in the solar system not being aware that shooting projectile weapons in a domed habitat is a Very Bad Idea.
@@syedjafferimam5789 Predestination made $5.4 million at the box office. I'm pretty sure that meant practically nobody watched it in theatres. I'd call that pretty underrated.
For once, someone did justice to a Heinlein story. Just discovered it recently and watched with dread waiting for them to screw it up. They didn't. They did add a plotline to it, which all in all I really didn't think was that necessary, but it didn't detract from it either. All in all, a damned good film. Now can someone come along and do Starship Troopers justice?
Definitely one of my top film picks of all-time, sci-fi or otherwise. It got some good critical acclaim upon it's release, so perhaps that's the reason it didn't make this list.
1983's "Brainstorm." I saw this for the first time in 2015 and it held up incredibly well, including the plot focusing on still-relevant issues about tech misuse and the military-industrial complex. Basically it got shelved for 2 years because there was a notorious death of one of the actresses. The film deserved way better and I often see it - very deservedly - on "underrated" lists all the time.
If you're a fan of Equilibrium then you should check out Ultraviolet from the same director. You'll see his style shine through. The fighting scenes are just as intense, if not more so.
The first adaptation of that book was the TV miniseries "World on a Wire" (Welt am Draht) directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. It is more Fassbinder-ish than SF-ish.
One of the writers of Silent Running did a great deal to transform television in the 80s. His name was Steven Bochco, who went on to give us shows like Hill Street Blues, LA Law, NYPD Blue and many others.
Sunshine was such a great movie, the way how the movie changes to a kinda cosmic-horror movie to the end was thrilling. I need to see the movie again! Now!
I might have to rewatch it. I remember not liking it at the time cause I basically just thought it was an Event Horizon rip-off. But that was years ago and I haven't seen it since.
THX-1138 isn't exactly considered underrated. Colossus: The Forbin Project is a great movie not a lot of people know about. I'd forgotten about it until I saw your comment. Going to watch it now!
Thank you, I was going to mention it myself. The Forbin Project was an intelligent well executed movie that I always watched when I got the chance. I haven't seen it in a long, long time. I'm wondering if it can still be watched without seeming to be terribly dated. I'm going to try and track it down and watch it again.
C:TFP has dated itself in the sense that it's a story that's really only possible in the 1970s tech age in the scenario of Cold War. Not sure a remake or update put into our modern times would even work outside of its time frame without it losing its uniqueness and edge and just becoming another SkyNet movie.
QuantumRift I watched Colossus: The Forbin Project last night. It's still a good movie and while it's definitely dated, I don't have any more issues with that than I do with movies from to 50's and 60's.. You just have to be willing to enjoy the story rather than the science - which is usually very wrong.. Lol
I'll always like John Carter. They should have added from Mars to the title, just like the book, and they may have acquired more movie goers in the theaters. The aliens looked totally real.
Honestly, I preferred this over Avatar. CGI is better in Avatar, but for some reason I was more intrigued by this underrated gem. Should've been bigger in the box office.
Me too. I was so excited when it came out but the movie was flawed from poor editing and directing. It could have become a franchise with sequels if done right.
@@omnichronos007 - the thing that killed John Carter was a change in directors, an indifferent Disney management and their acquisition of the Star Wars franchise. Piss-poor marketing destroyed John Carter as no Thark ever could.
It was a fantastic film. If they had paid to have "stephen spielberg presents:" on it or something it would have been seen and understood as a fantasy/adventure classic.
I love Event Horizon. So many people haven't seen that movie--its sooo good. I also love Gattaca, and was sad to not see it on this list. I am glad to see Enemy Mine on this list--this is a favorite of my family. I don't know if many people watched Innerspace with Dennis Quaid and Martin Short, but its also amazing!

Dark City is so underrated, it doesn't even make this underrated list.
It's cool because it's weird. Like Sin City. Like The Breed. Like The Abominable Dr. Phibes. Which aren't scifi but who cares.
It's wank
Makes the matrix feel like a bit of a rip off of it too. good film
As was Predestination.
Good movie
Logan's Run, Hunter Prey, Zero Theorem, Soylent Green, Lifeforce, Deepstar Six. Outlander, The Quiet Earth, Dark City, The City of Lost Children and Brazil. That's a pretty good list as well.
MOVIE PUNDIT ("Outland")
J. Collins I do like outland, but I'm talking about outlander with Jim caviezel, john hurt, ron perlman, sophia Myles, it's pretty good.
MOVIE PUNDIT does Caviezel go back in time in that one, to a viking era or maybe germanic tribe it's coming back to me now some kind of alien that preys on the tribe maybe caviziel was hunting it in the future am i close?
MOVIE PUNDIT and oops my bad
J. Collins no worries and yeah that's the one.
Here's the list:
1. Moon (2009)
2. Sunshine (2007)
3. eXisTenz (1999)
4. Strange Days (1995)
5. Equilibrium (2002)
6. Silent Running (1972)
7. Mr. Nobody (2009)
8. Heavy Metal (1981)
9. Primer (2004)

Titan A.E. (2000)
Enemy Mine (1985)
Pitch Black (2000)
Stalker (1979)
Thank you thank you thanky you. Watchmojo is such a clickbait.
Um... Event Horizon? And also... Europa Report was fucking awesome!
Thanks
Thank you so much
Gattaca and Dark City anyone?
+nOnOy borbun I wouldn't call Dark City underrated, I've only seen it discussed pretty positively.
+nOnOy borbun Yeah I was wondering if perhaps Dark City wasn't underrated and that's why it's not here. I think it's acknowledged as one of the greats. Predates The Matrix, and is in my all-time top 10.
+nOnOy borbun Both movies were awesome. The darker and tripier the movie the better.
Dark city you are right
+nOnOy borbun neither of those are underrated. Both great movies but not underrated.
I've also missed from the list:
Gattaca
THX 1138
Solaris (1972, the original by Tarkovsky)
District 9
The Signal (2014)
THX 1138 is good because not only would a society like (allowing AI to control society) that work, but it might be necessary for long term survival.
Gattaca....hellz yeah! Logan's Run is old and dated, but the underlying message is still true.✌
Original solaris is sublime
@@PhoenixLyon two words that every young lad knew 'Jenny' and 'Agutter'. Enough said.
Prefer the newer Solaris -
I rarely say this about watch mojo but this particular list is FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC
yea theyve gotten better with their lists lol
and they're still making their content in 720p midway through 2016...
Our society already wastes food, water, and most of our lives.
Why waste bandwidth too?
"Enemy Mine" is an outstanding film, worth more than an honorable mention.
I have the same story!! i just recalled the ending that upset me as a kid ...and yeah i recall the smoking scene now that you mention it! cheers!
Clyde Rain i must be a wee bit older than you; i remembered 1st & foremost the 3 robots that hang with Bruce Dern. i cried for them when i 1st saw the movie!😢
Clyde Rain actually i remembered their names & when he taught them to play poker.
That freaking film makes me sob like a baby EVERY FUCKING TIME. 'Tis why I rarely watch it even though it's so great.
Serai3 hey Serai3 When i was a kid, in ONE week i saw "Silent Running"; "The Omega Man"; and "Soylent Green". Talk about crying!!!✌💜
Pandorum people watch it. It was mind blowing and lots of plot twists.
Pandorum was a strange film.
Damn! "A Scanner Darkly" is underrated even on a list of underrated movies!
+Revonda Ball Such a good movie
Substance D IKR?
+Revonda Ball thank you. philip k dick rules.
***** Isn't that enough? BTW, it's called rotoscope.
Also worth a watch...
Idiocracy, The Quiet Earth, The Brother From Another Planet, Skywhales, They Live!, Death Watch, Scanners
+Bishop Howells . Had to keep scrolling the comments to see if anyone else mentioned "The Quiet Earth". Good sci-fi doesn't have to be loaded up with expensive FX :-}
*high fives you both*
+Bishop Howells Pandorum, In Time, Screamers, 13 floor, Serenity, Impostor, Push.
Screamers, good call. It gave me nightmares about Teddy Bears for weeks!
+Bishop Howells I agree with you that "Quiet Earth" should be on this list. Maybe they need a top 10 FOREIGN Underrated movies.
Cecil The Mystic Knight GOod woman movie
Haven't seen it since I was a kid. It seemed like a great movie. Babylon 5 reminds me of this movie somehow.
I was obsessed with this movie as a kid
Yes, I thought Enemy Mine deserves more than an honorable mention and didn't know it was "underrated". I thought it was kind of a cult classic. Everyone I've ever known who saw it really liked it.
@@debraprince4511 One of the few that me and all my friends plus our parents thought was great. I've shown it to girlfriends that were younger than me and missed it, everyone loves Enemy Mine. How many times do people cry during Sci-fi?
So many great films that could have been mentioned:
Children of Men...
The Way We live Now...
Threads.....
Bicentennial Man...
What Dreams May Come...
Demolition Man (really corny but Wesley Snipes was hilarious in it)
Two Mules for Sister Sarah...
Megaforce..
Flash Gordon...
Earth Girls are Easy...
Soylent Green...
Battle Beyond the Stars...
A Boy and His Dog....
Warriors of the Winds...
I f king loved Children of Men. That was a great film and had an even better source material
I'd put Gattaca in there...along with K-PAX.
+I “Ish” Monique K-PAX was like Rain Man, except interesting.
Interstellar?
+Mircea Donciu 8.6/10 @ IMBD is not underrated.
+Cazimir Bzh It takes place in the future and he's going into space...it's sci fi.
+I Monique “Ish” I'd say Gattaca is a great movie, but had much more media coverage than the ones in the list.
Moon was a friggin badass movie. I really love the films you think are just utter shit because it has 1 actor, in 1 room and you watch it and are blown away.
ie. Locke
Chris Kozma it was an amazing modern take on classic sci fi I loved it
ouch... i love Tom Hardy but this one of the worst experience i've ever had at cinema.
Locke was a great movie, Tom Hardy did a great job.
yea moon is good ☺
Yeah, Dark City is on my list for sure!
good one!
yep!! agree
Dark City is one of my all time favorites.
Dark City is not quite "underrated," but it's close.
patrick macmillan t bytytttttyvzvs
Ex Machina
- I can hear you, Dave.
Made me cry when I first watched it on TV aged 13...
Bruce Dern was known for playing bad guys but 'Silent Running' made me love him in all his roles. It's a truly underrated film that still holds up today. I remember wanting to cry at the end because Huey, Dewey & Louie had become real to me and I didn't want Dewey to be lonely.
@@azazelzel6954 it was the first film that made me cry, was a young lad when i saw it on tv.
Silent Running is one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made and is even more relevant today than it was then.
Really like that movie. Who didn't adore the three little robots!
Ive seen that movie many, many times. It never fails to move me even today.
Dark City. takes a couple watches to catch all the nuances.
Cube. A very simple, but IMHO very good movie. I think it qualifies as sci-fi. Don't bother with the sequels though...
Agreed, the first one was brilliant but the sequel's not so much
meh, i thought cube was about average
"Cube" was a good paranoia movie that was, for the most part, impossible. "Cube 2" was more solid sci-fi with an attempt to show a hypercube (a four-dimensional "cube") which, ultimately, was more satisfying, to me. I've not seen the third, although I'm told it's truly horrible.
CUBE, NOTHING, CYPHER, Dark City, Event Horizon, Immortal
Cube... what can I say, it is, an will always be, high on the mind fuck list for me!
There's one very obscure but brilliant sci-fi film that's not on this list. It's lower in budget than all the films on this list, but it's every bit as compelling in its concept. It's a movie called "The Man From Earth."
Loved that one.
OMFG YES!
100% agreed. Brilliant Movie that is completely character driven.
YES! "Man from earth" is fantastic
Absolutely agree it is very underrated. Watched it a few times. The dialogs are gold.
Dark City. One of the most underrated sci-fi movies ever!
Plus it had Jennifer Connolly. :)
since everyone loved it and had glowing revies never though it was underrated. although why on earth the Directors Cut doesn't get much love I have no idea. it's way better than the theatrical. Really awkward only way to keep it is on vudu. Blu ray not so much
You know how you (I) watch a film and think: "This movie is a lot like...."
This one is so original, I couldn't come up with a comparison.
I watched it maybe 5 years ago, apart from the visuals I've forgotten everything that happened.
not sure if I'm getting senile or if the story was forgettable
@haingis - You were supposed to forget. Mr. Hand is pleased.

Dennis Quad is one of the most under-rated actors ever.
He's amazing in everything he's in.
2010 had terrible acting.
John Karavitis Equilibrium was terrible.
Equilibrium is so underrated its not even funny.
+Corey Vaughn-Patterson Agreed
Seconed
+Corey Vaughn-Patterson Equilibrium is overrated, it's just a bad rip off of Matrix, with the terrible acting of Christian Bale and a stupid script.
+Nuts pseudo I'd say it's more of a rip off of 1984 and THX-81 than of the Matrix.
Saw it last year for the first time and the movie still stands as a good movie. good action and story
Loved Sunshine, great performances all around.
And the score, so amazing.
Yup, Surface of the Sun is still one of the best musical pieces I've heard on film.
ThatKiwiGuy
My favorite is Kaneda's Death.
Prometheus: its a good prequel to Alien.
First S-F movie I can remember. Sounds cheap, but it taught me a lot about tolerance, forgiveness and friendship
That’s been one of my favourites for years. Not very well known either.
Agreed. Very good. I forgot the name, so very happy to find this again!
This movie is ripe for a remake.
It's one of the many films inspired by the books (in this case a short story) by Philip K Dick.
More famous examples would include "Blade Runner" and "Total Recall". I read the short story the latter was based on ("We can remember it for you wholesale") and at the end was left thinking, WTF?
Sam Rockwell deserved an Oscar for "Moon".
Wasn't difficult, being the only actor and all

Agreed. He also deserved one for Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind

Awesome selections y'all :)
THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR!!! - better philosophical message than Matrix and was released two months prior back in 1999!!! SHOCKING THIS WAS LEFT OUT TOP POSITION
I was just going to leave a comment about this movie. I had never heard about until my boss told me about it. I want to re watch it now.
An A-Mazing movie!
Wow I forgot all about Enemy Mine.. loved that movie. One of the most memorable movies from my childhood.

most memorable but you forgot it.
@@AnnaBucci yea i've been waiting for someone to point that out.

U R right.
So R U
It's "Gun Kata," heathen lol. And yeah, totally. Even if it IS a ripoff of Fahrenheit 451...still one of the best ripoffs of all time.
1984 as well!
Stalker by Tarkovsky is not an underrated film... it is one of the greatest films of all times! It has no comparison with the rest...
Brazilian Goddess you don't know the best film ever
Brazilian Goddess it definitely is
Brazilian Goddess you should definitely see it some day. It's too good to describe
oh cmon it's not even mildly good have you seen any movie those 40last years?
Cate Blanchett said of Stalker: "Every frame of that movie is imprinted into my retina"
I've seen most of the movies on this list. Sunshine is one of my favorite films. What a soundtrack. Surprised the fountain isn't on here.
+majinraptor Yeah Sunshine is just so good in every single way!!!
+majinraptor I watched most of them. And Sunshine isn't my favorite. It is fun to watch to but the plot holes are miles deep if you understand anything about space physics.

I've never heard of Sunshine, but it's the only film on the list I haven't seen before that I now want to watch.

Someone recommended it so I saw it. There's four of us already!
Seen it, and it was mind boggling, I had to watch an explanation on the ending, because I didn't catch it the first time.
Primer was _great_ ... and made on a seven thousand dollar budget. That's just nuts.
Not the only one

Solaris is worth a watch.
What about THX-1138???????????????????????????
I'm glad that Stalker got a mention. It's not only a really intriguing film but it's also introduced me to a completely different culture and way of thinking... can;t think of many films that have had such an impact on me.
Agreed!
+Matse Kase Whats that one about? I checked out the trailer but it didnt make me any the wiser.
+Phil Hunter it's based in the area where the chernobyl accident happened. It's about people called stalkers who effectively live in the area after visiting it and becoming attached to it. It's a bit difficult to describe without giving away too much.
Matse Kase I might give it a try. Thanks.
+Matse Kase !!!??.. if its about the chernobyl accident then I'm very impressed!!.. as the movie was made 6 years BEFORE the accident!!
I think Matrix was inspired by Dark City, good movie overall but matrix is better
Dark City for real. Matrix totally ripped off of it
CLOUD ATLAS YAAAAASSSS
Equilibrium was such a badass movie!
It was really good story for such a low budget.
I can say that Brazil is really underrated here in Brazil. What an irony.
I agree! Absolutely love both of those films...
Gattaca for sure!
+Jan Hald I was just about to comment that and saw yours. It deserves an honorable mention at the very least. Gattaca is a very underrated movie!
Yep it's a beautiful movie, and the subject matter is so relevant today even! It's more like science fact maybe!
***** Well it's a pretty old move now, but I still know many people who have never heard of it. It's not the first Sci-Fi movie that comes to peoples minds, which is why I think it's underrated.
I was going to mention Gattaca, but I guess you beat me to it :-)
Gattaca is not underrated
Gattaca...13th Floor...Lost in Space...The Cell (Equilibrium, Existenz, Strange Days, 2010 and Sunshine I can agree with you)
Wow, Stalker just honorably mentioned ?
Dark City yes! Great film that, one that anyone can enjoy.
Outland was awesome, and the production values of Black Hole are amazing!
@@sl9sl9 and lifeforce it even has patric stewart in that one :)

+Cao Cao Underrated.
Badass ending...hmm...you mean this: :)

Silent Running was one of the most emotionally impacting movies I ever saw.
2010 is a great movie with a mighty cast ... John Lithgow, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban and Roy Sheider. And of course the wonderful voice of Douglas Rain.
I thought that 2010 was a good movie too.
Excellent is the adjective tou seek.
Best Lucas film. But it is a film for adults, not for children, like SW.
Actually Lucas also wrote Ewolks: Battle for Endor. I liked that one the best.. He didnt direct it though.
wow = forgot that one - great movie
That was a great list. I jumped for joy when Silent Running was mentioned.
Yes!!!
+Kevin Kral Silent Running was a great film in spite of the fact that the little Celestron telescope could not have gotten the detail of Earth that was shown from that distance. I like Joan Baez's voice.
+Swinde I do too. That guy is probably some rap "music" fan or something and therefore WOULD say HER singing is "odious".
Never seen Silent Running, but was very pleased to see Strange Days mentioned. It's a great film, and I've loved it since I first saw it on tape after it went to video. Angela Bassett is so amazingly kick ass and amazing in this movie! i had such a girl crush on her!
+MrBfg586 Silent Running is the worst movie I've ever seen.
Even though this is a 70's movie I thought '"The Andromeda Strain" was underrated.
Andromeda Strain is universally critically acclaimed... how can it be underrated??
Where's Rollerball (1975)? It was GREATLY underrated when it came out!
I don't know if you'd consider it underrated, but I love Forbidden Planet. The first movie in which not one scene took place on Earth
What? They filmed it on the moon?
Also first film to show mankind operating its own starship
Hardly under-rated, it's a classic.
It is Shakespeare's The Tempest.
Forbidden Planet doesn't belong on the list, because it's generally rated pretty high on classic lists.
equilibrium, without a doubt underrated
rene hernandez agreed!!!
Indeed
Most definitely!
There needs to be a sequel
The fights are AMAZING!
I couldn't help but think about Predestination and The Man From Earth...
+Dialask Isel The Man From Earth is great. Watch it now if you like Twilight Zone type sci-fi
+Dialask Isel Oh yes, The Man From Earth ...
+Dialask Isel Man from earth is one of my personal favorites.
I didn't like it. Full of holes. I would rather watch "Requeim For Methuselah" from the original Star Trek series. It certainly made a statement about University Academics and our public school system though. A great concept and could be a great Sci-Fi movie but not this one. 2/10.
Regarding Man from earth
Sunshine is one of my favorite sci-fi movies ever, despite the strange and somewhat out-of-place antagonist.
+Mursukorva Oh and lol it was on the list ^^
+Mursukorva I'm glad it finally gets a recognition! It was a great movie.
Yeah it's a great movie
I think the antagonist was really random but I don't think it was that out of place.
He realised that all things come to an end and by completing his mission he is interfering with nature. He wanted to let the chips to fall where they may.
That's a genuine thing to think about and it drove his character mad.
I really loved the setup of the movie. How there was Icarus 1 and how they found it and shit
The CGI is good, but scenario is fucked up.
Moon is one of my favorite movies. I constantly recommend it to people and I’m always amazed that almost no one has seen it. Sam Rockwell’s performance in Moon is fantastic.
Silent Running breaks my heart every time.
mine too!
Yep. Especially these days. And the Joan Baez songs add an extra layer of melancholy.
Rumsfield in “The ‘Burbs.”
“They’re daring each other to ring the doorbell!” 😄
Dark City. Come ON!
Dark City was not underrated by anyone who saw it.
Right. Good call.
more comic book flim in my view but dam good moviie i and i own it
Dark City is great gothic.
Dark city is badass sci-fi. For Dune to not be number one makes this crap anyhow. Dune is the best movie ever made, just takes a higher lever thinker to abstract it's perfection and that's a Lynch Hallmark.
Dark City, Alex Proyas. you forgot it! :)
Dark City! Good times...
Also the German Classic: *Welt am Draht* (Rainer Werner Fassbinder)
Equilibrium was bad ass!! One of my favorite movies ever!!
I got it on a DVD from the budget bin with three other movies on it. I thought it was awesome.
That scene with the puppy in the trunk where he fucked up all those guards with the gun kata, one of my absolute favorite action scenes of all time!!!
I remember watching it years ago and thinking "Awesome, Sean Bean is in it" right before he dies. Then I just thought it was weak - and when Christian Bale's character says "I have no feelings for this table" my friends and I burst into fits of laughter...Not his greatest movie for me.
Sam Rockwell has to be one of the most underrated actors in our time
He won an Academy Award so I don't think he's that underrated.
the signal, gattaca and cloud atlas , event horizon just to name a few!
Oh man the signal was great. I watched it w my chic who's not even into sci-fi but she totally enjoyed it.
+Rami Al Ahmad Oh jesus I'm still scarred from Event Horizon
Yea, gateway to hell will do that to ya.
+Rami Al Ahmad Yeah, the Laurence Fishburne movie "the signal" is awesome (not to be confused with the zombie horror one)
Pitch Black, for sure is my all time fav sci-fi. For under-rated sci-fi, K-Pax with Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges is a brilliant movie.
holy shit i forgot jeff was in that!
I like K-PAX too great movie and great books.
Moon is awesome.
Awe inspiring work from Rockwell. Jeez, that guy can handle anything.
*AND* watch it alone! Also Sunshine, do not have anyone else around. It's a special journey.
For me it's right up there with 2001!
Predestination should be there on the list
It's gross, but really good
100%
Except that anyone who watches it has to watch another video explaining the timeline.
@@dantrim3937 no

Pandorum (2009)!!!
So good and so underrated.
+buda1604 I concur.
+buda1604 Agreed fully. I'm sure it will become a cult classic tho.
We are not hauling the cargos,
We are the cargos. 🤣
HAL is one alphabet short from IBM..
Mr. Google helps
+Randomnick123 Oh yeah, I knew that once. You've reminded me of it again. :)
+Randomnick123 You blew my mind sir.
And that is absolutely accidental.
Read the book.
That Kid With A Camera
So, what does it chance even it would be accidental? Its still the same.
Outland. Sean Connery on a moon mining base fighting hired assassins. Really good
Outland, Outlander is something different.
So it is. Ta
I'll edit my OP
Holy crap you're right that should be number one i totally forgot that movie. Serenity is my number 2.
Also directed by Peter Hyams, (Who made 2010, 3 years later)
Outland is High Noon in space. It's an enjoyable film, but some of the plot developments are idiotic, like the two greatest assassins in the solar system not being aware that shooting projectile weapons in a domed habitat is a Very Bad Idea.
Is no one going to mention Predestination? a perfect time travel loop
That's not an underrated movie.
@@syedjafferimam5789 Predestination made $5.4 million at the box office. I'm pretty sure that meant practically nobody watched it in theatres. I'd call that pretty underrated.
Thank you!! Say it again.
An almost perfect adaptation of a Heinlein short story.
Predestination (2015) Fantastic time travel flick. Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook were great in it.
The MOSTEST time travel film with a headf**k of Grandfather paradox thrown in for good measure.
The Infinite Man is a v good low budget time travel twister.
@@__init__ I think I will check that out, thanks
Soo good. Such a mind fuck..... rooster.. genius. Ian banks novel 'walking on glass' is cool too.
Brainstorm was not bad at all and still underrated.
I loved Equilibrium and Christian Bale, not realising that I had already seen him as a boy in Empire of the Sun.
The Langoliers (1995) is and remains my favorite underrated movie / mini series of all times. And you can even find it in full version on UA-cam.
So cheesy and stupid. Stephen kings worst
Bronson pinchot was good in it.
I would add Idiocracy, but it's becoming less science fiction every day
😂😂😂
rushwal. Dammit. Too close to home.
ahahahahahah
When it came out it seemed absurd and very funny. A few short years later..... Totally realistic and pathetically true!
I thought that was a documentary - ?
Equilibrium is awesome. One of my favorite movies of all time.
I miss District 9.
Stunningly awesome movie and the lack of a sequel is a crime against cinema.
Yes it just cries for a Sequel AND a Prequel.
Definitely one of my top film picks of all-time, sci-fi or otherwise. It got some good critical acclaim upon it's release, so perhaps that's the reason it didn't make this list.
this list was about under- not overrated sci-fi movies
Please tell me you're not saying that District 9 was overrated, Daniel D.
Great movie...
Brilliant film that survives multiple watchings. My idea of true sci-fi.
@@albertloan396 "true sci-fi" is well-put for this movie. Good scifi is where the fantastical serves the ideas instead of the other way around.
Scared the life out of teenage me!
Equilibrium it's such a good movie...
Equilibrium = de la grosse merde à la crème fraîche

If you're a fan of Equilibrium then you should check out Ultraviolet from the same director. You'll see his style shine through. The fighting scenes are just as intense, if not more so.
"The Thirteenth Floor" could be on that list.
Agreed. Good Movie
Drl2t. Absolute killer ending. Blew me away.
Agreed. The book it is based on is really good, too - "Simlacron 3"
13th floor, great movie....
Colossus: The Forbin Project
THX-1138
I found a copy on DVD. While a 'bit' dated, it's still a good film. I found THX-1138 to be just, well, depressing.
QuantumRift I watched Colossus: The Forbin Project last night. It's still a good movie and while it's definitely dated, I don't have any more issues with that than I do with movies from to 50's and 60's.. You just have to be willing to enjoy the story rather than the science - which is usually very wrong.. Lol
Source Code, that one's a hidden gem.
oh i agree
I really wasn't keen on that film, and the ending was just horrible.
I’m all in
I love
Source Code too well known to be here?
Equilibrium is simply a masterpiece.
I dismissed Heavy Metal as a “bro” movie for the longest time. My husband finally convinced me to watch it, and it’s terrific!
"Moon" was awesome!
David Bowie's son!!! 😄
I'll always like John Carter. They should have added from Mars to the title, just like the book, and they may have acquired more movie goers in the theaters. The aliens looked totally real.
From the mind of Edgar Rice Burroughs who is also the author of Tarzan.
Pandorum is a pretty cool movie.
Mark Engeln one of the best space movies too.
Pandorum is the one with Dennis Quaid and they are stuck in a colony ship gone wrong? I saw it on TV, good movie!
Pandorum is my #2 favorite, right behind Aliens.
one of the best movies ever made
very cool movie
I love Event Horizon. So many people haven't seen that movie--its sooo good. I also love Gattaca, and was sad to not see it on this list. I am glad to see Enemy Mine on this list--this is a favorite of my family. I don't know if many people watched Innerspace with Dennis Quaid and Martin Short, but its also amazing!
Event Horizon = LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME! :-)
