Well, that cleared a lot of things up. I always thought that charges below 3 weren't as damaging, but I guess they can be useful sometimes. Also made me realize how C.Range Coatings aren't as useless as I thought they were. I thought they actually only worked for the melee attack... Thank you, it was very helpful.
You probably shouldn't just use Stage 1/ Stage 2 shots all the time, because of the damage per second. You'll only actually be dealing that damage per second if you hit every time, and there's lots of dodging, item-use, and item-combo strategies to take into account. I'd only go with DPS damage if I'm under time constraints. Charging to your maximum will let you get the most punch out of your coatings. You also don't have to eyeball the distance. You can use your R-button guide to hit the monster at- or around the top of the arrow-trajectory to get the bonus damaage. #WiiU #MH3U #3DS
Really helpful video. I did read a bunch of tutorials out there, but this gathers all of it in one place, and provides really good visual representation. Much better than text based explanations!
When you melee with it with R+X+A when sheathed - It does a melee draw from being sheathed. It is useful for Paint Coating for it doesn't use up any Coating or is useful for quickly applying a hit or two of coating hits without actually expending Coating. This is useful whenever an effect is about to proc but you believe you are just short of procing it with your remaining Coatings. I have used it to sleep monsters when I only had 2 coating left and I hit it several times, then sleep bomb'd it.
Greetings Shepherd, long time watcher of the podcast and your channel. I really like these tutorials that you post, they're very useful in learning how to effectively use the weapons, especially tricky ones like the bow! In every monster hunter game until now i've been sticking to the blademaster path and i feel i think i should try something new, and the hunting bow is fun to learn use. Thanks again for the video~!
Great tutorial. As a side note I would like to mention that status coatings and paint can be applied with the melee attack using the bow. Handy if your running out of shots and are close to that critical paralyze etc.
If possible get the classic controller pro. I think the analog stick placement on the Wii U pro controller is going to be somewhat detrimental to bow use.
Essentially, when the Kelbi Bow is used with awaken, it gets a large amount of slime. The level 1 charge is a high level spread charge, so applying slime is really easy to get out quickly.
I had always been taught that the best range was where the arrow would hit at the top of its trajectory. You can time the button presses for a spam-stage-1 shot to fire it slightly faster than mashing. C.Range Coating also seems to increase the sharpness of your arrows so they don't bounce (Purple sharpness possibly?). Thanks for the tip on elemental loss. My fave bow so far, (Arko Nulo (Y)) is almost entirely elemental damage.
Anything that applies exhaust can KO a monster if the attack hits the head. So if you can get your exhaust coated arrows to hit the monster's head, it will get KO damage. You can do the same with the exhaust shots for the bowguns.
Local play is great if you have other people around you with 3DS's to play with. If you played Monster Hunter Tri a lot, you may be able to solo your way through the game. It was designed so everything could be soloed. You can play online with the 3DS, but you need to have the Wii U in order to do this (not the Wii).
I think that applies for pretty much any bow that can't use power coatings. Not being able to use power coating is a huge loss of damage. And, yes, every arrow shot has a distance modifier.
Hmm, I have one of those around here collecting dust (I was enjoying the whole "no batteries" thing with the WiiU version). I figured that since they re-introduced the bow that they must have had some control scheme in mind that I just couldn't fathom. Maybe I'll dig around for that other controller now that the issue doesn't seem to be "something I'm missing." Thanks!
With bows, Status shots still do raw damage. In Tri Ultimate, Bowguns do as well (this was not the case in games previous). I don't know the exact numbers, but it changes with charge level and shot level (for bowguns)
Yes, you can still deal raw damage, however you shouldn't keep on paint coatings. You should use one of the damage boosting coatings, Power or Close Range, since there's no need to constantly apply paint when you could be dealing more damage.
The only reason I see for the Paint coating is to essentially move the Paintball into the gunner section of the item pouch freeing the other slot in the first three pages.
I've knocked many a monster out with Exhaust coatings. One thing I noticed was how many bow users spam the level one charge with status/exhaust coating. You need to have at least a lvl 2 charge to get the results you want. Spamming lvl 1 charges only gets you the need to for more coatings.
Aye, I can agree on that. Given that the Kelbi bow can use all coatings it is indeed a very nice status inflicting tool and can be an asset to the group. However, as I solo weapon, I find it lacking. On a seperate note, thanks for making this bow tutorial. I had noticed I would get more flinches using charge 2 and 3 on bows, but didn't have the data on the actual damage multipliers. Great to know that Charge one is a waste of a power coating.
Status, exhaust, and slime are all similar in that they do a certain amount of their damage for each hit and the moment they reach a threshold, inflict the status. So you would need 90 poison damage to inflict poison on a Great Jaggi at first. Then the threshold will increase by a set amount. Slime is a bit special in that, I don't believe there's a threshold increase. So you can proc it faster over a long period of time.
Looking forward to the actual fights, the Nargacuga arena was the only one where I got S-Rank on my first try with the Bow and not any other available weapon.
No, it has to be all cutting damage in order to cut the tail. The main advantage of pierce shots is to hit a monster with a large section of its body being the weak point. For instance, Deviljho's weak point is its stomach, so piercing through and hitting its stomach multiple times is really great. The difference between the different ammo/shot types is primarily based on the weakpoints of the monsters. So if you have something with a large weakpoint that can be pierced easily, use pierce.
All the math you need to do is in the video. If you focuse exclusively on trying to apply elemental, say water damage on Uragaan's chin, level 1 will be better. Armor skills and body parts hit will be much more important when determining damage with level 2 charges.
The LBG limiter removal is a little different. It exchanges your ability to rapid fire and some of your evade options for the ability to fully reload all ammo types at once. If you only rely on a small selection of shot types, I wouldn't remove the limiter, especially if you primarily rely on rapid firing. If you use a wide variety of shot types on that LBG, I would remove the limiter. For instance, I have the Ancient Shard LBG, and I make use of a huge amount of shots, so I remove the limiter.
Depends on what you're doing and whether or not you can afford to crouch fire. Generally, if you can't afford to go into crouch fire, remove the limiter.
Shep, I don't know what the changes are, but Exhaust Coating cannot inflict KO status unless it is from Arrow Rain. It's kinda like spamming Exhaust S on a monster's face, then hitting them with Crag S. That's how it works.
couldn't find your other comment. 1st, nah any of the arrow rains can knock out but blast is just more preferred due to it being more concentrated. For tails, you can weaken a tail with ANY damage type but you need cutting damage to cut it off. Like say a tail has 1000 hp. you can use a hammer and do 1000 hp impact damage but the tail will still need that one cut damage hp to get it off
If you look in the description, it doesn't actually say what the song is. Only where you can find it. Unfortunatly, i'm away from a desktop and don't have the time to check every video. Have you ever heard of such a thing as convenience?
IDK if they changed it, but there's a Japanese player who did tests on status shots, and it says Poison Coating has a separate multiplier of 1.5 at Charge LV3/4, while Sleep and Paralyze is at 1.3. However, both of them get 1x at Charge LV2. Slime is still questionable.
The one question that remains unanswered and that I couldn't find an answer to as of yet, is how the arc shot types affect damage and status infliction. I've heard that Wide and Focus arc shots apply status effects a lot quicker, but couldn't really verify it for myself or find any info on the internet... Do you know the answer?
Hi Chris!, Spith & Venom (Great Wroggi) is a good bow when you're just getting used to g-rank. It has good shots, decent power, power/venom/sleep, and 3 slots. It also gets a coating boost to poison (which multiplies by 1.5x. You should get at least 2 poisons/sleeps a run). Helios Helm Z Helios Vest X Wroggi Guards X Helios Coat Z Nebula Leggings X Would be the armor set I would make, and gem up for Focus/Earplugs/Rapid Up/Status Atk +1. Should be good solo or in a group!
Scatter shots have their place, and I do believe their optimum range actually starts one hop shorter than other types. I've seen videos of scatter bows completely wrecking the likes of diablos, ivory lagi, and deviljho, partially thanks to ScatterBow/Pellet S Up being a 30% raw boost, but for the former two their tails take the most shot damage out of any other part of their body, making the scatter type perfect to use because of their flat, wide spread.
Like I said, I am speaking from experience, and it's on an older game (P3rd), but I will try this. I've only ever gotten the KOs from a combination of Exhaust to the face and Arrow Rain.
Hey could one of the teamworkcasts felleersss make a hunting horn tutorial? I cant seem to find a decent one that actually explains the use of the notes, and the physical attacks
with scatter bows i took the time to get a good Power coat Add tali. almost all the scatter shot bows except the brach dont get power coatings. i got a +8 one and the only skills i really need is Power coat add+focus+pellet up. anything else is extra. also one question about the distance for scatter shot. Does it really get a multiplier for range? i was always told it doesnt but they could just be referring to that its better to get all your arrows to hit. thanks!
If a monster has a singular, large weak spot, like Akantor from FU/P3rd, use spread or rapid is a good choice for hitting its face. A clip size of 9 Normal 3 is pretty good, and, yeah, Normal 3 is a pretty good shot type.
I have a question, for the bow Seahorse Harp its level 1 charge is Rapid L5, while its level 3 charge is Rapid L2, would I have more dps spamming level 1 charge compared to charging to level 3?
Since paintballs do no damage, do paint coatings reduce your damage to 0 as well? Also, the melee attack changes depending on the coating WITHOUT using the coating up so you potentially have infinite of each coat.
Wrong. You can inflict KO status if you hit the monster in the face with the exhaust coating on it. I've done it before and pretty sure others have as well. Thats the whole point of the arrows making that impact sound when they hit the monster's face with that coating on. FYI arrow rain can inflict KO status without the coating. it doesn't matter
Good tutorial Social! Although you did mention the trajectory of arrow rain. You forgot to mention the damage and the type of damage it does depending on the type of arrow rain. Where as Focus will do an explosion which has an impact effect (can knockout monsters if you keep getting the head) with a damage considerably stronger than the S Barrel Bomb but not as strong as a L Barrel Bomb... blah blah etc. Bows are S Tier weapons!! :D
Hey Shepard I just beaten qualaag and I'm about to sen's fortress but its extremely difficult. Should I just farm souls or go to darkroot garden and fight sit. Also this is Dark souls and new cause I got it about a week ago.
Hey could you talk about affinity? I have that amour set and the green narga bow giving me 70% affinity. I was just wondering if it's very affective like it was back in unite.
One question, is there really any difference between pierce lvl 3-5? It just seems that they have the same factors. Is there any difference or are they just the same in values?
Hey dude. This video has helped me alot. BUT I can´t figure out how to do the different attacks/spells. I play on the 3ds xl if that makes any change. And I also use the circle pad pro XL. Like how do you do spreat shot. Or how do you do the arrow rain? PLease answer :)
The main effect comes about when you have a full group of people with Awaken, Bombardier, and Felyne Pyro (the latter two buff slime damage), while pelting a monster with the level 1 Kelbi Bow shot.
That sounds like it's more of an issue of dealing enough KO damage with the amount of coatings you're using/during the span of time you're applying the KO damage.
It's worth noting that to play online on the 3DS you not only need a WiiU, you also need the WiiU to have a wired internet connection. Wi-Fi isn't allowed.
hey shepard i love your guides keep it up! but could you tell me some bows i can use efficiently in Grank cause i tried the abyssal lagiacrus bow vs silver rathalos and it took me 25 minutes to take him down while i make it 10 minutes faster with any melee weapon
What I am having trouble with (as someone who clawed the bow in Unite for a few hundred hours) is how to charge, run and aim at the same time. With the PSP (and the Vita) it was really quite elegant, regardless of what the haters say. With the WiiU pro controller, I find it is VERY awkward to use a bow as effectively as I used to...
dude ty for displaying those multiplier values.I speak a ton of math when it comes to MH,so your info here might make it possible for me to start a bow comparison tommorow,so far I have compared every top rank weapon among blades, Found some interesting things, ty for this vid man I'm only a MH3 vet, but I really got good at MH in just tht 1 game. I became a pro adrener too, I can't wait to see who I can adren in MH3U also, I plan on doing some MH3 U informational vids soon. Nice music choice 2.
Thanks for sharing this info, I've kind of been playing it by ear the whole time and been unable to find detailed information. What I really need now is a detailed bow guide for under water combat, that seems to be where the bow really suffers the most but I could be wrong. I don't understand how the bow functions under water, been getting my ass handed to me by Lagis. The arc shots just seem to fall useless to the bottom of the ocean, are they still useful under water? Another thing I'm interested in is using arc shots under monsters. Does the arrow going straight up do any bonus damage to the monster versus a normal shot? (I've gotten under Dumbo and shot up into his face a few times with an arc shot just to see if anything happens, it does hit him but it doesn't seem to do anything special) Thanks for any info anyone can provide.
The ranges you were showing for the damage boost were a little bogus. All three shots have different ranges, their charge AND level also affect their range as well. Two easy ways to know you are getting the best damage is by checking the yellow aiming arc. Where that arc peaks is where you get the 1.5x multiplier. Also, if you hit your target and you get a white flash when the arrows hit, thats optimum range. ALSO in mh3u 4th charge no longer gets boosted, or is much less then before.
Shepard, firstly just wanted to say that im really glad u made this guide cos im a bow user (high rank). Do you have power coating on all the time when facing a monster? Also, what is a good armour set to have when u first get into g-rank?
Thnx, this type of guide that really goes into the math of things is by far the most useful type of guide for this game, even for veteran players.

The tutorial is for Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate. Some things got changed from Portable 3rd to Tri Ultimate.

Thanks so much Shepard, like I said, you are probably the single most amazing person alive. I always wish I could be as good as you.

I chose the music to reflect the current state of the bow. Hopefully the next videos will be more happy. But only if you put the Kelbi bow away.
Is this a small glimpse of the Shep-sheets?
Thats pretty much right, close range coating also stops you from bouncing with the melee attack.

Scatter shots have their place, and I do believe their optimum range actually starts one hop shorter than other types. im confused as to how to aim the dang bow. could you explain its aiming to me?
Like I said, I am speaking from experience, and it's on an older game (P3rd), but I will try this. I've only ever gotten the KOs from a combination of Exhaust to the face and Arrow Rain.
so exhaust can K.O monster even if im not using a hammer or other impact weapon?
So how much of a multiplier does one get with the armor skills Spread/Rapid/Pierce Up give a bow user
teach us about status, elemental, exhaust and slime please
You didn't talk about bows that have Coating Boosts! I wanted to know your take on how much more status they do.
Hey could one of the teamworkcasts felleersss make a hunting horn tutorial? I cant seem to find a decent one that actually explains the use of the notes, and the physical attacks
Hey Social I was wondering when you are going to make that Alatreon video concluding the offline of Moga Village.
Doesn't the coating stack on top of your Bow's elemental damage if you place the same one on there? Para coating on top of a Para Elemental Bow?
What about number crunching on Load Up. Is it an advantage to consider?
with scatter bows i took the time to get a good Power coat Add tali. almost all the scatter shot bows except the brach dont get power coatings. i got a +8 one and the only skills i really need is Power coat add+focus+pellet up. anything else is extra. also one question about the distance for scatter shot. Does it really get a multiplier for range? i was always told it doesnt but they could just be referring to that its better to get all your arrows to hit. thanks!
what is good high rank armour sets for bow? im on 3ds and grinding to grank is a pain
Have you ever heard of video's description
If a monster has a singular, large weak spot, like Akantor from FU/P3rd, use spread or rapid is a good choice for hitting its face.
A clip size of 9 Normal 3 is pretty good, and, yeah, Normal 3 is a pretty good shot type.
Do you know what the damages for the arrow rains are? I can't find them anywhere :(
I have a question, for the bow Seahorse Harp its level 1 charge is Rapid L5, while its level 3 charge is Rapid L2, would I have more dps spamming level 1 charge compared to charging to level 3?
Since paintballs do no damage, do paint coatings reduce your damage to 0 as well? Also, the melee attack changes depending on the coating WITHOUT using the coating up so you potentially have infinite of each coat.
The C. Range Coating should be used when attempting to cut tails on harder monsters since it increases sharpness.
Shepard can you explain why you're mixing armour sets so often? I thought it was taboo?
I've been getting back into this game lately, this helped a lot thanks
Good Job Shepard, I have always admired your videos.
What's a good beginner bow and armor set for bow?
Hey Shepard I just beaten qualaag and I'm about to sen's fortress but its extremely difficult. Should I just farm souls or go to darkroot garden and fight sit. Also this is Dark souls and new cause I got it about a week ago.
Hey could you talk about affinity? I have that amour set and the green narga bow giving me 70% affinity. I was just wondering if it's very affective like it was back in unite.
One question, is there really any difference between pierce lvl 3-5? It just seems that they have the same factors. Is there any difference or are they just the same in values?
Dear Shepard, what armor set/gems would u recommend for the awakening skill, I am trying to get it for my kelbi slingshot.
I can only use 3 coatings and I have other coatings on with me is there a way to fix this
certain bows can only use certain coatings. look through the bow information and which ever coatings are in white letters you can use.
Ok thanks
Hey dude. This video has helped me alot. BUT I can´t figure out how to do the different attacks/spells. I play on the 3ds xl if that makes any change. And I also use the circle pad pro XL. Like how do you do spreat shot. Or how do you do the arrow rain? PLease answer :)

i think it's unlocked after you kill a brachydios
Whats the song at thw start called?
Wait, I'm confused you call it tri ultimate but isnt it 3 ultimate for the wii u?
That sounds like it's more of an issue of dealing enough KO damage with the amount of coatings you're using/during the span of time you're applying the KO damage.
is there any free DL for MH on PC versions?
Are energy drinks just good for increasing stamina, how come so many people use them?
Thank you soo much Shepard!! All these tutorial vids are really appreciated!!
It's worth noting that to play online on the 3DS you not only need a WiiU, you also need the WiiU to have a wired internet connection. Wi-Fi isn't allowed.
Can u do a tutorial on gunlance plz
I wonder why doesn't the Kelbi Bow not have Arrows.
hey shepard i love your guides keep it up! but could you tell me some bows i can use efficiently in Grank cause i tried the abyssal lagiacrus bow vs silver rathalos and it took me 25 minutes to take him down while i make it 10 minutes faster with any melee weapon
He said that the melee attack was sometimes made with a sword not an arrow, anyone know which bow has a sword? O:
the kelbi stingshot and all of its predecessors
dude ty for displaying those multiplier values.I speak a ton of math when it comes to MH,so your info here might make it possible for me to start a bow comparison tommorow,so far I have compared every top rank weapon among blades, Found some interesting things, ty for this vid man I'm only a MH3 vet, but I really got good at MH in just tht 1 game.
(I've gotten under Dumbo and shot up into his face a few times with an arc shot just to see if anything happens, it does hit him but it doesn't seem to do anything special)
Thanks for any info anyone can provide.
what is the song at 4:10!!!
Yay you're back!
What's the story behind those Kelbi's bow comments ? I keep hearing about it in the MH3U community, but I've never found any explanation so far...
What's the song?
Shepard, firstly just wanted to say that im really glad u made this guide cos im a bow user (high rank). Do you have power coating on all the time when facing a monster? Also, what is a good armour set to have when u first get into g-rank?
Shepard commander?
What are the skills in your armor set?
Yay this is what Ive been waiting for!
I'll make one eventually.
it does work without it, hitting monsters in the face with it does the animation and sound for KO.
