    Another nifty little thing I learned about harvesting extracts from small monsters.
    Remobras have red and white extract, which means there may be other small monsters with 2.

    Guard pointing is one of the best points about the charge blade. it seems difficult to time an attack correctly, but what i do is just press the special button on the screen just before i get hit. Its easier to time, more responsive than the guard button, reduces damage and maybe even sharpness lost, and harder to mess up for beginners. Happy hunting :)

  • @RoboRobotnik
    @RoboRobotnik 9 років тому +5

    A few small animals can give two: Remobra gives red OR white depending on where you hit them.
    The bit about longswords and greatswords is more about what part of the sword hits, not so much how close you are. If you hit right at the hilt, you do less damage, if you hit between the hilt and the middle, that's where you do the boosted damage.

    A fun SnS mechanic that I don't think is too well known (atleast with the people I play with)... when you do the rising ledge mount attack you can actually control the direction you jump at if you press left or right.

  • @FootWorklHDl
    @FootWorklHDl 9 років тому +3

    Actually for LBG the fastest most safest way to reload IMO is to run off a ledge, but before jumping over the ledge press R+X+A and you'll unsheathe to a reload. Doing this right before a cliff or a jump spot will cancel the long animation to reload and you'll just drop down, but of course you'll still have your ammo reloaded. This works for when you zone too.

    What they *also* don't tell you about the HBG is that you can roll from siege mode back into siege mode. That is, if you do a side-roll out of siege mode, you can hit X during the roll and you'll re-enter siege mode again with a fresh set of shots. This is perfect for something like Dah'ren Mohran because you can just keep siege firing from side-to-side until all your shots are exhausted.

    Might I add that for the switchaxe, there's this combo which is absolutely amazing. After an uppercut attack in axe mode, you can press A and do a thing where you swing the axe in an X formation, which you can do until you run out of stamina. During this attack, you can press X to swing the axe downward and do what I assume to be a lot of damage and finish the combo, or you can press R to start doing a spin attack. During this spin attack, if you press R again, you'll morph into sword form in the middle of the spin, which you can then follow up with X attacks until you get the quick double swing attack (when you swing twice in one button press) and then instantly press X and A at the same time to go directly into a phial explosion. It's kind of like that really long SA Hunter Art in cross. I assume it does a metric fuckton of damage, and it's great for breaking parts. Of course, you'll also send allies flying and they'll probably hate you, but it's fine.

  • @UtterApe
    @UtterApe 9 років тому +2

    Another tipp: If you are using the Longsword, there is more to filling up your spirit bar than just to be able to do the spirit combo. Once your spirit bar is full, you will gain a "technical" (that's just what I call it) sharpness+1. The additional sharpness will not be displayed, but your weapons attacks will be treated as if the weapon had one higher sharpness level. This means if there is part on a monster where you bounce off with your current sharpness, fill up the spirit bar and see if you still bounce. To note here is that this works on all sharpness levels, EVEN ON PURPLE. If you have a Longsword with purple sharpness, you will still get the sharpness up effect, which gives your weapon an "ultimate" sharpness so to speak. In this state, you can cut through any monster part, even the ones you still bounce off with purple sharpness. Most of the time hitting said spot in that state won't cause much damage, but it is still effective if you want to break that part.

    With any weapon there is always the sheathing while walking off the edge. If timed correctly you instantly put your weapon away. This takes a lot of practice and only works on small ledges but it can get you out of a pinch

    You gotta be somewhat careful with the whole 'roll into siege mode' thing for heavy bowgun. It will siege in the direction your character is facing, not the direction the camera is facing. sometimes it's better to just use X + A if you don't want to roll towards the monster.

    On the note of Small Monster extracts, there are some small monsters that provide TWO kinds of extracts. For instance, the Remobra can provide both Red AND White extracts, depending on where you hit them! Useful info.
    Also, on the Heavy Bowgun, you can roll out of siege mode (albeit with a delay), but you can also go straight back into siege mode out of that very roll! So just as your one siege mode runs out of ammunition, roll to the side, press X (I mash X, because the timing seems odd to me) and go straight back into siege mode with a full clip to unleash. It is really powerful and saves a lot of time if you ever happen to have the opportunity.

    Hunting Horn tip: If you are going to encore a song to the left, don't spam the R button. If you do, your hunter will swing the horn twice and then play the song. But if you time it correctly, your hunter will only swing the horn once and play the song immediately. I just figured this out recently when I went back to replay MH4U.

    I can't imagine playing Charge Blade without Guardpointing.
    Guardpointing can completely change the way you play, waiting for the monster to do a heavy attack, and hitting them with a super in their cooldown period is awesome as hell.
    Here's a few more tips on special actions.
    1. If you have a N3DS or find it uncomfortable pressing the special icon on your touchscreen, then go to Settings and change the option "START" to "Kick", this way a special action will be done by pressing START, instead.
    2. The special action for Charge Blade is a Guardpoint to Axe transform, which can be used anywhere, while idle or moving.
    3. If you don't want to use either, you can also press X+R, which means X+R, X has to be pressed first, and R has to follow immediately, otherwise you'll do the Guardpointless version (R+X) which is shorter, but... obviously has no Guardpoint!
    Here's a few tips on combos and attacks.
    1. The Roundslash has a Guardpoint at the end, which can be enhanced by transforming to axe.
    2. The Roundslash has no end delay for evading, but once the hunter starts moving his sword to the starting position, you can no longer Guardpoint.
    3. For all other moves, there is no Guardpoint or Evade delay at all, so you can take your time waiting for the enemy to make their moves mid-combo.
    4. The Shieldjab is two hits, and it gives you superarmor, and Guardpointing and Evading is immediately possible *and* stays possible after the second hit, but this attack locks you in place for about 2 seconds unless you chain any action , so be careful.
    5. Run-in-Slashes(X+A or X while sheathed and moving) followed by successful Charged Slashes(A), Shield jabs(X+A) and Reloading your phials(R+A), this all gives you Superarmor in quick succession, making you able to resist tripping from extra annoying teammates, and also protects you against windpressure, but not against certain... "Blackwinds" later on in the game.
    In axe mode, only the "switch back to sword" attack doesn't give you superarmor, otherwise you're good to go.

    • @Punchyzen
      @Punchyzen 9 років тому

      Just to note the guard point blocking frames is considerably shorter for a straight switch vs a swing into switch. But it's still useful when in a pinch, where you have no time to swing.

    • @zethian9445
      @zethian9445 9 років тому

      +Mike Rider How do you go from a guardpoint to a super immediately?

    • @mikerider2014
      @mikerider2014 9 років тому +5

      +Hollow You need to block something, after your character blocked or guardpointed a blow, then you can retaliate by immediately pressing (X+A).
      You can only retaliate blows that don't exert too much force, so if an attack causes your hunter to duck and slide back, despite blocking, that means Retaliating isn't possible.
      You have a few options to remedy this, try blocking the roar from Rathalos, Rathian or Najarala, for example.
      You'll find your character recieves strong knockback and is unable to do much retaliating, but if you *Guardpoint* their roar, the knockback is just weak enough for you to instantly punish them with a Super.
      When you transfer energy from reloaded phials into your shield...
      (Do a super, and before your hunter strikes, press R to end it with a transfer-roundslash, instead!)
      ... Then your blocking power is enhanced, and even "just blocking" means you only recieve medium knockback from their roars, while Guardpointing them means that you hardly take any knockback at all.
      ...Did you know, you can cancel and downgrade an Ultra burst, yet? (Preventing using all the energy in your shield?)
      (Do your Ultra burst like you're used to and then pull *and keep* the left stick pulled back, while mashing X)
      You should notice a clunky animation skip, and hear your shield make a second noise.
      After all, the 20% damage boost from the charged shield is something that you shouldn't just throw away like that.
      Lastly, there are a few attacks that still cause too much knockback for your hunter to handle, even by Guardpointing, for these attacks you may need to invest in (at least) Guard+1 to be able to Guardpoint proficiently.

    the HBG trick works well wide the sideroll out of siege for example shoot in siege -> mash b to leave siege and make a sideroll to avoid projectiles or fireballs and immediately press x again, you dodged and are quickly ready to keep up the damage. This is really useful against monsters that often have smaller ranged attacks that dont cause an area of effect explosion like gravios beams

    To add to the HBG bit... You can go into siege after every evade. For example, once in siege mode, roll sideways and press X again and you'll go into siege mode again just like if you'd had rolled forward. If you need to reload ammo for siege or just want to keep siege, side roll out of siege into siege is the way to go.

  • @sabata2
    @sabata2 9 років тому +1

    That HBG tip actually makes HBG seem like a viable option for solo for me now.
    It seemed so slow and clunky before, but if it can go straight into it's rapid fire from an evade, that means HBG is more about knowing when to *stop* attacking than when to start.

  • @ALottaBees
    @ALottaBees 9 років тому +1

    In regards to HBG siege mode!!! Just when you're out of that siege-mode's ammo, if you rapidly evade in any direction and try to dodge-siege, it skips the slow animation that comes from leaving siege mode AND you get to enter siege mode again quickly.

    i don't know if you said it in the video because i don't fully understand english but you can reload faster by entering siege mode while evading and then evading again out of it
    this obviously only works if the ammo you plan to reload can be in siege mode and you have limiter on, but it's useful if you for example are using gravios gigacannon outside hame runs online since it takes forever to reload

  • @SotiCoto

    Now I think about it, I knew two of these before. The Insect Glaive one and the falling reload on the bowguns (I flipped out when I found out the falling reload, but folks on GameFAQs basically ripped into me for assuming it was any better than a regular reload).
    But then I don't often use anything besides my Bows. I used to DB a lot in 3U, but barely touch them in 4U. I've been using the Insect Glaive a bit more.
    I've also Greatsworded quite a bit, but I didn't know there was any sort of overcharge. It doesn't tend to come up often though since I'm more likely to undercharge than to stand around holding the button down for ages.

    am I right in assuming that most weapons of same/similar rarity are pretty evenly matched aside from whatever elements they might have?
    I was looking through all the weapons on Kiranico, and the sharpness and raw damage seem to be about the same with different weapons of the same category, with the main difference being different elemental/status effects and maybe affinity.

    I got one for ya': Did you know, with a Gunlance, you can transition from a Full Burst straight into Wyvern's Fire? Just press X+A right after you unload all your shells! Good note: the Full Burst will push your hunter back a few feet, so aiming to ensure you don't end up too far away from the monster by the time Wyvern's Fire goes off is key. I suggest aiming along the side of a monster instead of directly at it. Also, it takes a while to do the whole thing, so it's only really useful after a successful mount.

    Sorry, i know this vid is old now, but with lance I notice that evading after the three hit combo allows you to go right into a new combo, which I think is a lot quicker than waiting for the final hit animation to end before starting a new combo. +Paradise If that really works, then that is really awesome. I tried guard pointing once... it didn't go well.
      Then again, setting it to Start also sets it to Select, doesn't it? Which would mean the menu would be set to the touch screen panel. I don't really like the idea of that, personally...

      +Laggalot101 One of the reasons I hate playing MH on 3DS is that the controls aren't as good as they were on WiiU, even the Wii. Start and Select aren't seperate on 3DS MH, while they are on WiiU/Wii. All the more reason to give us a MH on console. I will be very sad if they haven't fixed this issue in MHX, I doubt there's anything stopping them from making Start and Select do different things.

    • @laggalot1012
      @laggalot1012 9 років тому

      ***** Honestly, beyond the start/select thing, I think 4U's control scheme is perfectly fine. Really, no problems with it. And beyond the Start/Select there really is not a whole lot they CAN change to the control scheme and putting another Monster Hunter on Wii U is obviously not a viable option right now.

      Monster Hunter has never controlled well for me on 3DS. It's the only 3DS game where my hands hurt after playing for a decent length of time and that's even with the CPP on a 3DS XL. I've never had such issues with other 3DS games (though they are nowhere near as intense as MH), nor have I had any problems playing it on other platforms. That and a bunch of other factors make me hate MH being on 3DS. I'm a tad disappointed that MHX is 3DS only and I hope Nintendo makes their new handheld soon and make it a good one. If MH was still good with Sony, MHX might have been on PS4 with beautiful HD graphics, but alas, that partnership is long dead.

      ***** Really? The only game that's ever really made my hands hurt on a DS system (and by extension 3DS system) was Metroid Prime Hunters, and that game was very notorious for causing hand carmps. Another game, Kid Icarus: Uprising, however, never did cause any hand cramps for me, even though that's a common complaint with the game.
      Personally, I play Monster Hunter on a New 3DS model. I don't know how the CPP affects the way the system is held since I've never had one, but I'd imagine it would be a bit awkward.

    One thing I've discovered that can be incredibly useful in many situations is to use small ledges to cancel certain animations. What this does is instantly cuts off any long animations that might leave you vulnerable.
    For example, if you are near a small ledge, you can almost instantly sheath your weapon. Do this by walking toward the ledge, and the instant before you walk off the ledge, sheath your weapon. Your hunter will begin the sheathing animation, but as soon as you walk off the ledge, the animation is cut off and you're free to run along. This has proven very helpful for me in the past, particularly in the Arena, and especially for weapons that take a long time to sheath.
    VERY USEFUL:
    Another thing you can do is instantly load a Light Bowgun. With the Light Bowgun, when you draw into a reload (using R+X+A), your hunter takes a bit of a step forward as they draw the weapon to load it. Now, if you draw into a reload right before walking off a ledge, the reload animation is cut off, your gun is loaded instantly, and you're free to run around!
    Not very useful but fun to pull off:
    Another fun trick to do is to cut off the get-up animation after a Superman Dive. If you can manage to do a Superman dive toward a small ledge, and slide off the ledge after hitting the ground, the long get-up animation is instantly cut off, essentially granting you an instant recovery. This one is super situational.
    These tricks are similar to Ledge Cancelling in Smash Bros (Melee), if you're familiar with that. Although they can be rather situational, they are definitely handy tricks that are helpful to keep in mind.

      +Isaac E. Although it's rarely any use, if you can manage to position yourself over a ledge just as you fall over as you pass out from sleep ailment, you'll trip down the ledge and break out of it instead of falling asleep. I thought it was fun, and although it's really tricky it could save you a cart if you're out of energy drinks :D I assume also the same thing can happen with paralysis, but the difference with that is you already have to be in position when hit.

    If sheathing your weapon takes too long, try doing it off a ledge, assuming you’re already next to one.

    heres one for the gunlance, though im not entirely sure how i did it, but i swear i did reloads while jumping off a ledge, id notice id have less than full shots, then i would press a button combo and i would suddenly have reloaded a single shot, an di have no idea what i did, i think you might need an empty gunlance in order to do it, then press a button combo to reload a single shot if you need it.

    I've read that the LS do more damage when you hit with the middle of theblade, not whe you hit very close to the monster... To confirm !

  • @BM03
    @BM03 9 років тому

    I don't use Great Sword but my understanding from reading back on Freedom was that Great Sword works with a sort of "sweet spot" which is the middle of the blade, and that middle of the blade is more damage than the tip or "the handle". Could you confirm this, GaijinHunter?
    Also I think the reason you could immediately evade after aerial attack on gun was because your clip was full, not because the ledge was high (that specific ledge wasn't particularly high). I kept wondering for a bit why sometimes I could dodge right away and not others and noticed that if I am not missing a single bullet, the hunter cuts the animation and (not pulling the spring/magazine) and lets me dodge right away.

    • @ZephSeph
