- On a 7 hour layover in Kaunas, Lithuania on my way to Bergen, Norway, I decided to take the bus into the city centre and have a look round. I had the following recommendations, so decided to vaguely follow it:
Transport: You can take the bus 29G to get from the airport to the city centre and back. I suggest to get off the bus at the stop Gedimino g. (here is the route).
The walk from Soboras to Kaunas castle is very nice (see map), you will find a lot of cafes and bars on the way. Sights on the way or nearby:
Laisvės avenue
Vienybes square
M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum (if you like art. Čiurlionis is one of the most famous Lithuanian painters, symbolist)
Yard gallery
Historical Presidential Palace
Kaunas Parochial Archcathedral Basilica
Kaunas town hall
Valančiaus street - many boutiques and small art galleries
Santakos park
Church of St. George
Kaunas Castle (and museum)
When you reach the town hall, I suggest going to the Church of Vytautas the great and crossing the bridge. On the other side of the river, you will find Aleksotas Funicular, which will take you up the hill to the nice viewpoint.
You can take the bus back to the airport from this bus stop.
Places to eat and drink:
Višta puode
Holas
Nuogas
Piano piano
Kultūra
Hop doc
Spurgine (more about it)
Agave
Vingiu dubingiu pub (for bear)
Genys Taproom (for bear)
I really enjoyed my brief layover and would fully recommend this city for a longer visit!
The street in the old town was being refurbished, but the work dragged on for way longer than expected, because they found a lot of things that archeologists wanted to log and then covid happened. It's almost done now in the summer.
Thanks for clarifying! I'll have to go back to see the result
same with Soboras. They're currently at court with contractor
Oh wow, hope they sort it out!
Any progress on the paths and roads?
No idea from my side!
Omg, fried pickles?? I’m jealous 🤣
Great video btw! 👏
Thanks! Yes not the healthiest day of my life 😂
you have an excellent command of your voice, just like Bold
Thanks!
Anthony Kiedis is of Lithuanian heritage :)))
It's true!
I've been to Kaunas a few times - the church is actually a cathedral ☺️ the Square is colloquially known as Red Square - a throwback to a soviet era gone by. Thanks for sharing your trip. I am flying back to Vilnius on 28th March for a few weeks more exploring this beautiful country and will definitely be back in Kaunas too!
Cheers for the correction! Enjoy your trip mate, as you say it's a beautiful country
No, the cathedral in Kaunas is in the old town, just on the corner of the Townhall square.
Great video! I actually Made a video in October from Kaunas on my channel 🇱🇹 I really like Kaunas, I’m actually going back later this month and you’ve gave me a great idea of something to see where the 2 rivers meet. Lithuania is a country which pleasantly surprised me. Vilnius is a great city to spend a few days in. Keep up the good content. Enjoy your videos
Thanks Cesare! Hope to see you soon somewhere in Europe or beyond
I'll be going to Kaunas this October!
@MusoLegionBrendo fantastic, enjoy!
The city of kaunas flag is a cow.
The knight is a historical national flag.
And was almost there flag again when they reclaimed their independence.
Great knowledge
Not a cow. An aurochs. It's like saying "a dog" to name a wolf. Similar but different.
Two beers only? As a Czech I'm very disappointed! 🙃 Great video of a nice city I'd like to visit one day.
I had more than two in the end because of the delay, but i try not to film every beer... Can't have the Internet believing I'm an alcoholic 🤪 thanks for watching and hope you make it to Kaunas, well worth a visit!
ohmygosh a sleeping beast in the castle!? Why didn't I know about this!? haha. Cute gimmick!
Kaunas is the new resort in Lithuania!
Great place!
If I hadn't have been looking at the screen, I'd have thought I was watching one Bald and Bankrupt videos. You sound similar 😂😉 great helpful video.👌♥️👈🇬🇧
Thanks, glad it was useful!
I'm from Kaunas and I never went to the the very edge where the rivers meet.
Nice spot, you should go!
@@helloantoniotraveladventures You should go if you like to see lots of water.
Good idea 😂
@@eglej6343 also ducks from time to time!
My favourite animal!
Weird bald and bankrupt vibes🤣
I'm not bald or bankrupt... Yet!
Aciu ,
Are you sneezing?
"brutalist soviet style". OMG. That church is one of the finest examples of Kaunas' modernism style which is the whole city center is built in, and it has nothing to do with soviet brutalism. Such ignorance...
Thanks for the correction, I'm no expert!
Not a piece of rubbish in sight.
Such a clean country
Close your eyes.. and you hear bald and bankrupt talking 😂
😂 think his Lithuania videos were a bit more interesting than mine!
You mentioned that you're a Red Chillies fan. Anthony Kiedis actually has a Lithuanian roots.
Yes you're right, I remember reading this in his autobiography!
