  • The Night Rivera - GWR's sleeper service - runs from London Paddington down to Penzance, and vice versa. Recently, the cabins and lounge car have all been upgraded, and we were invited by GWR to go on a trip to have a look at the refurbished carriages.
    The sleeper train has four sleeping car berths, two seated cars and the lounge car. It runs six nights a week (not Saturdays) and there is now also a large-accessible berth as well, perfect for wheelchair users.
    The First Class lounge as Paddington also has showers and can be used by anyone with a First Class ticket, the lounges at Penzance and Truro are currently for sleeper passengers only.

    Now that's a nice sleeper car. Wish American ones were like that. Ours are ancient.
    The bunny was adorable. Grandmum was wonderful.
    And the Waltons. They would go through the whole family. Glad you didn't.
    Why a blue light? Because they found when your eyes are closed, you can filter it out. You can't see it. You will notice it is very small and dim. Just enough to orientate yourself. Red is actually better to keep your night vision, but it can get through your eyelids. So a dim blue is considered better for a night light.

      My experience on the superliner sleeper cars has been quite different. I have been very happy.
      No wifi is basically going to be par for the course as most long distance routes are not going to be great as most of those systems rely on cell service. (And sat services suck anyhow).

    I wonder if having lie flat seats like they use in airliner business/first class will ever catch on for these sleepers. I'm inclined to believe they would seat more than twin berths. I only know of a few chinese high speed services that offer them in very limited numbers though.

    Has anyone ever taken the sleeper train from London to Edinburgh? What is it like? I think I might be doing that next time I'm in the UK

    • @DaveSuperThomas
      @DaveSuperThomas 5 років тому +1

      Hi, Evancortez 2! I've travelled on the overnight "Caledonian Sleeper" train between London and Edinburgh quite a few times, both before and after the service was Privatised in 1997, and since it was taken over by Serco Group plc in 2015. It's always an interesting experience and, by travelling whilst you are asleep, you effectively add an extra day to your holiday allowance. My advice to you would be 1) Under no circumstances whatsoever travel in the Seated Carriage as this is a life-expired Mark II Coach with tread brakes that grind horribly every time that the train needs to slow down, and seats which (although roomy and comfortable) don't really recline: 2) The Compartments on UK Sleeper trains are quite small (in order to fit 12 or 13 of them into a 23-metre Mark III carriage!) so it's better to pay a bit extra to travel First Class (ie Single Berth Cabin) rather than going Standard Class (ie a Twin Berth Cabin)… plus, if you travel First Class you can use the First Class Customer Lounges (with free showers) at London Euston and Edinburgh Waverley, and you get a complimentary Breakfast served to your cabin in the morning. 3) The Lounge Car on the London to Edinburgh Sleeper serves hot meals (including Scotland's signature dish of Haggis, Neeps and Tatties) as well as lighter snacks, and an excellent range of Single Malt Whiskies, all in a convivial and relaxing atmosphere. A three-course meal (Soup, Haggis and Cheesecake) will set you back about £20, which isn't too bad these days, whilst a couple of "wee drams" before you retire to bed is conducive to a good night's sleep. There is a concealed wash basin (with hot and cold running water) in your Cabin, along with USB charging sockets for mobile telephones and bottled drinking water. There are bisexual toilets at the end of each carriage which can be used even when the train is standing in a station. The actual beds are on the narrow side (24 inches or two feet, which ever you prefer) but they're reasonably comfortable so I usually manage to get a decent quantity and quality of sleep during my journey. You can stay in your Cabin for up to an hour after your train reaches its destination. I hope that this information is of use to you and that you enjoy your first Anglo-Scottish overnight "Sleeper" trip as much as I enjoy mine.

    Did the Night Rivieira around 5 years ago from London for a football match against Truro City and paid for the upgrade to a berth. I was woken up at 3am to be told that we’d broken down, were still at Reading, and had to cross over to a standard HST replacement where I then had to sleep on the carpet underneath tables until Truro. Fortunately, I got my entire return journey fee back and a free return journey from Paddington to anywhere on the (at the time) FGW network. Used it for Torquay away the following season

Ex's family were in Turku, so we'd get the night train back - and since it gets into Oulu before 8am, we'd book all the way up to Rovaniemi to get a lie in and still have time for a shower. We'd spend the day up there undoing the stress of a family visit before getting the evening train home (with a quite civilised dinner on board).
      The bog/shower thing is genius, even if it's just a wall swinging across; I can't believe all these camper van conversions haven't cottoned on to it yet. And there can't be too many sleeper compartments in the world with a dedicated place to strap your skis to the wall :)
      Also, putting your car on the train is still a thing here, with several car carriers on the back of the sleeper train, so the whole thing feels like a proper adventure.

    I travelled on this sleeper twice before the refurbishment and it does look better now but i imagine that this is now second best to the new Caledonian Sleeper with ensuite and double beds etc.Would love to see the North East South West sleeper reinstated which was the most heaviest used by passengers before it was axed when BR was privatised.

      Someone else just complained about the heating being to high... But if you go for a nighttrain, you are better off with taking a cabin, it's not much more expensive (the ticket plus a supplement of £45 solo in a shared cabin, or £70 for guaranteed privacy in your own), and definitely much more comfortable.

    Sleeper trains look like a lot of fun - I’ve not been on one since I was 13 and my grandparents took me on a train tour on a special sleeper that went London - fort William and whilst we slept in the train, the sleeper carriages remained at fort William and the rest of the train (with us!) visited Mallaig and Oban.

    • @darkstarnh
      @darkstarnh 5 років тому +3

      @@DaveSuperThomas A very similar vocabulary and grammar rather like Breton as it's from the same branch of Celtic languages. The spelling is different (there is no 'V' in Welsh and we have the dd, ll, rh combinations which are actually single letters in Welsh without having their own character (look up Welsh Scrabble) but you can get the gist of what's written. I found the same thing in Brittany. It's vaguely like Spanish and Portuguese. Similar enough to follow the sense but different at the same time.

      Unfortunately it has indeed turned to "airplane style" 2 + 2 seating in the Night Riviera's Seated Coach, in order to cram more paying passengers into the same limited space. I believe that the seated coach from the Night Riviera turns around at Penzance and is used for an early-morning commuter train, so GWR wasn't going to give the day travellers a free upgrade to 2 + 1 First Class seats!

    Fantastic video as ever! One personal gripe with the refurb as a fairly regular user (and a cheapskate who can't afford a berth), Great Western's refurb has made the non-sleeper car far too bright to sleep in! (The light you see at 04:47 doesn't dim all night). If they sorted that out, I'd be a happy bunny.

    As someone who travelled up to Scotland every year on a sleeper to visit grand parents I can recommend them. I always found the gentle rocking of the train along with the muffled clanks and squeaks rather soothing. One of these days I'll cough up for a first class cabin and travel up to Inverness again. It's such a shame that they're disappearing in Europe. I've also used Canadian sleepers which are a little different but still very comfortable.
