Watching this as I still have my original childhood toy in a box in the garage. It’s now 50 years old and has come half way round the world. This has given me confidence to get it up and running.

I straightened a crankshaft like that once. I thought at the time that I was cheating and not doing it in a workmanlike manner. The fact that it finally straightened took a little bit of sting out of my guilt. And to watch you do it I am finally guilt free. So thanks; I feel MUCH better!
With a little modification that scrap boiler could be a tiny stationary boiler ,i think that whould be quite a funny sight
Just found my TE1a and wagon from when I was kid, stored at my sadly departed mother's house. I wonder what the chances of it running straight off are. I didn't use it that much but feel like a big kid and want to have a go, now. Good vid btw and chucklesome Northern sense of humour. I am from Manc land (somebody has to be)
Watching you straighten that shaft, I'm dumbfounded. I don't understand how you could possibly time it to hit the shaft when the 'high' side is upwards. It seems like you'd just be tapping it at any random time in its spin. When I used to balance electric motors, we always had to have a careful reference so we knew exactly where the 'heavy spot' was.
I don't deny it works, I mean you've been doing it for years. I just don't understand how it works. Just shows me there's more to machine shop workmanship than you can learn in a book. :) Love your videos.
It's just practice - bend a few shafts badly first then after a few years the Penny drops - it's all down to "feel" }:-)))
Springs in my area are MUCH better at escaping and never being captured than in your area.
Love this series! I have several of these engines.
I am not entirely sure but I think the very early TE1's were held together with bras screws in place of the pop rivets. Might be a nice easy mod to make. As for the old whistle you have I can remember burning my fingers as a kid because this wasn't really well thought out by Mamod being on top of the fire. it was way to hot to operate. Also my TE1 never had the reverser lever.

The axel end caps hide the fact that the axels are sheared off rather than sawn to length. And thats how you save money :o)

They are both TE1A’s, the TE1 had no foreword or reverse lever, single direction. The outlet from the cylinder fed back into the empty section of the boiler at the front with a small choke to help control speed and then internally fed to the chimney. The TE1A’s have forward and reverse selection as well as direct fed pipes to chimney.
I am no expert on Mamod steam engines, but if I remember rightly as it's a while since I made this video, the boiler I fitted has "TE1" on the smokebox . . . I am aware of the differences between the two versions though . . . mine is going to be a hybrid }:-)))

They changed over the printing on the boilers either way! I was just pointing it out - I’ve made a few ‘customs’ and as long as they are used and enjoyed what more can you want! All the best with it Keith, Joel
Keith, good to see this, thanks. Can you cover making the control lever stay where you set it? Mine just shuts off due to the swinging of the cylinder.
Swinging Cylinder - sorry I don't understand the question. My cylinder remains in a fixed position.
I think he means the reversing lever will move from where you set it due to the vibrations of the oscillating cylinder.

I am about to do some work on my 1972 TE1a that I had as a kid. I was about ten then. I have to put a new whistle on as the original spins around and lets too much pressure out.
I also have a slightly wobbly chimney which is common when they've fallen off a shelf over time. I was wondering if you had any tips on that ?. Great videos.

are you going to put tires on the wheels of your Mamod traction engine like i have done with my own mamod portable steam engine?

@@keithappleton are you going to back date it to nearly how the first ones built in the 1960s looked because the new boiler has got a original early whistle? you can still get water level pugs for the early engines on some websites
