This was a blast from the past! I never owned one, but a good friend from school did. He lived in a close, so traffic was minimal and we could play in the road. We never used the steering post, but fired it up - and nobody in the early 1970's got into a tizz about schoolkids playing about with matches or methylated spirits - and just let it go. Great fun!
If you lived in a 'close' you were slightly better off than average then, your friend probably had well to do parents, bet he got the number ten meccano set as well!, very happy days though, when the world was normal.
Great fun they indeed were. I too never owned the engine featured on the video here, but did have a stationary Mamod engine that I had hours of fun with. In an attempt to make this engine "mobile", I fitted it out with wheels, steering linkage and a pulley drive system made from Meccano. With an over filled meths burner creating huge flames that licked out from the sides of the burner box, the engine moved pretty well under its own power, but was well and truly defeated come the slightest incline.
Great restoration, a reminder of my happy childhood, we had some properly dangerous toys to play with back then, but it taught us respect for things that, if not handled correctly could bite you back!.
Yup.......... Remember when it was perfectly normal for a 12 or 13 year old kid to carry a pocket knife ? .......... In school? No one thought a thing of it.
@@Troublemaker1022-r9c still do, we sixties and seventies kids had our fights like everyone else but, we wouldn't even dream of taking our knife and sticking it in another person, it was unthinkable, scores were settled there and then with fists if required, of course what the government media and cops don't tell you is that knife crime isn't committed by 'us' if you know what i mean.
I love the attention and extra work you put into sound recording and scene setup. Your videos are a work of art! As I said before, you're the Stanley Kubrick of Restoration Video Creators!
My Godfather had a collection of steam powered toys he started collecting when he was a kid in the 1940's. He never stopped adding to his collection. I will have to check but, I think this is the exact model steam roller that he had. It brings back great memories, Thanks!
Took me back to Christmas day 1965 unboxing my one. Best present ever. Thanks for bringing that little boys memories back to me. I might just get it out and fire it up again!!
Великолепно сделано!!! Отлично! Браво. Снимаю шляпу... Побольше бы такого контента на фоне китайских "псевдо-реставраторов". Жму руку и желаю и дальше заниматься любимым делом и радовать нас!
I just cannot believe how nice this turned out. I can see a lot of work went into this but it looks like it just came from the toy shop! I always look forward to a restoration from you and this was great to watch. Thank you for sharing your efforts with us.
I saw this road roller in it real big form , when I used to go toschool, I liked it big steel fly wheel ,continuesly revolving in high speed .😂 Fine Restoration done 💯 👍
I’ve got one with a roof and log trailer that I bought at a garage sale for $10. Couldn’t believe my luck! Still got it and I get it out now and then to show the grandkids but they either don’t have the patience to wait for it to get up to temp or they are afraid of it. Doesn’t matter - I love it.
Fantastic restoration and vidio. Thanks so much. I had one when I was a kid and loved it. My kids loved it too, years later. I then sold it on to a swedish family. hope its still going!
My Grandmother bought me a traction engine when I was 8 in 1972 I still have it and it still works I'm now 60 years old My grandson as the same model as you have just restored he`s 9 and he loves it.
Terrific work and what a cool little toy that could NEVER be sold to children today! Makes me miss the good old days when a kid could walk into a nickel and dime store and get a cap gun that shot off real little gunpowder caps or a dart board or a pressure pump water rocket or a chemistry set with real chemicals...glass test tubes and an alcohol lamp. When I was 10 years old, there used to be a mom and pop store in town called Green's where you could buy replacement chemicals, Estes rockets (the big "D" engines!), working steam engines and gasoline powered Cox piston engine airplanes and dragsters. Nobody got hurt, everyone was happy, nobody made pipe bombs from the innards of solid rocket motor cartridges etc...just good adventurous clean fun for curious kids! What happened to us? How did our society, in the name of keeping us safe, take all of the discovery, adventure and fun out of being a child? Electric motor planes...Velcro tipped darts and boards? No mini explosions...no smoke...no little piston engine noises etc...boring!
I can’t agree more with what you said. Thanks a lot for these words, always touching to bring the memories back 😌🙏 I have children and they really don’t care about those old toys 🤷♂️ so… we’re lost 🥴😅
I've read somewhere that each and every safety measure was applied after an accident, so your memories may be as well just a survivor bias. I agree, though, that we became probably way too safe, but on the other hand - if you want this type of toy for your child and are able to learn them how to use it properly, you can still do it, buy it as a vintage or even make your own (and if you are unable to make it, the same rant may be used - because the previous generation was probably able to make such toys :D ).
god i remember these as a kid !!!! they were soooooooooo expensive !!! i would have loved the car one but als never ever had the money !!! thats beautiful work right there !!!!
Back in my day when I was a kid, I loved big machines, so I wanted to be a train driver. Half of my dream came true, I started driving tractors. A big machine that could turn left and right.
Absolutely amazing! Ingenuity, technique, imagination and improvisation are unmatched. This shows how good Mamod toys were when originally built. I also work as a repairman. but you guys did a great job. But the video editing is also absolutely excellent. - with some success - but nothing compares to the storytelling videos on this channel.
Congratulations on a beautiful job. I have this exact road roller. Mine is still in the original green and black but i may n÷d to change that. The brass & black is much prettier in my book.
Well, there are no words, super, amazing work👍
I couldn't agree more.
I have one of these I bought in St Andrew’s Scotland in 1966 . Still runs great.

@@Roastbeef01 - Yup. Good to see someone playing with such a potentially lethal toy in the correct manner. Enquiring minds, and all that. 👍👍👍😆😆😆

True… quite dangerous toys.., Always thrilling to light them up 😱😰😅
Steam engines, electrical, and chemistry sets from the 70s. All toys that taught children to respect fire and current.

This could not have been an affordable toy for most kids (or adults) back then. Very nice restoration!
I found an advertisement for a later model(1969) it was $24.99, or about $250 USD in today's money

They cost £5.99 in 1973 I still have the receipt somewhere.

That's the coolest toy I've ever seen.
Britain produced some great toys back in the day; Dinky, Meccano, Corgi, Matchbox, to mention a few and Mamod is one of them. Great restoration.

Gorgeous restoration, I love that you decided on the polished brass instead of painting it again.
