  • This is just a brief video talking about the 5 main differences I noticed instantly when moving from Fujifilm X to Nikon Z full frame. Of course, the difference is the sensor, but there is a lot more to it than that as I noticed. ** IT IS IN NO WAY KNOCKING APS-C - I LOVE ALL CAMERAS - JUST AN OBSERVATION **

I recently shot a few hundred images during a weekend with a rented Nikon Zf and 50mm f/1.8 Nikkor S lens. Although I did notice improvements in image quality, focusing speed, and accuracy in face and eye detection AF modes, the differences I saw weren't quite as dramatic as what you described. They certainly weren't enough to make me want to dump my Fuji gear. That said, such things are subjective and I am by no means trying to discourage anyone from buying a Nikon Zf--but if someone is having a hard time getting high-quality images from a Fuji XT-5, it's quite likely the photographer and not the camera is the problem.

Oh, they really are huge improvements if your relying on them for your work. For an amateur, it can be less likely to see them, but there are plenty of responses on here that have seen the same improvements. Thank you for your reply, it's great to see what others see, or shows we all have very different perception and needs.

I replaced my X-T3 with Nikon Z5 in a sale much cheaper than X-T5. Kept my X100F if they do a medium format version I might bite but GFX lens system is bankrupting. I have some vintage 35mm film camera also. One added bonus if using vintage lens is the numbers don’t change. Those old manual lenses drop the weight even more. I do miss the Acros b+w film recipe though.

I can identify with this. I had been using the xt3 for several years and was frustrated with low light performance. In late 2022, I decided to upgrade to the xt5 and also get the Z6ii while it was on sale along with the 50 mm 1.8 lens. I use and the Fuji for travel, kayaking, and the moon. I use the z6ii for indoor events and everything else. Very happy with my decision over a year later. I can really identify with the points you make in this video.

I have canon r6 mark ii and fuji xs-20 and I actually find the detail is comparable. Actually the viltrox 27mm f1.2. Is the sharpest lens i own. Its $545 and the only lens that comes close is my rf 50mm 1.2 thats $2300. I can definitely shoot at higher ISO on the Canon. But the noise looks so much better on the Fuji and cleans up better. If I want to shoot low light with a zoom lens I definitely prefer the Canon. But if im with prime lens. I like my fuji better.
    My current lenses
    Canon 15-35 f2.8, 24-105 f4, 70-200 f2.8, 50mm f1.2
    Fuji viltrox 13mm f1.4, viltrox 27mm f1.2, 16-50 f2.8-4.8, 70-300mm

Great I’m happy for your move to Nikon from Fujifilm after 20yrs of shooting Nikon I’ve just moved to Fuji couldn’t be happier my big heavy Nikon bricks can keep sitting in my cupboard where they’ve been sitting the past 2 years. If any photographer can’t take a usable image with any modern day camera by any of the the camera brands in 2024 regardless of sensor size I’ll tell you its not the camera at fault. Just a reminder too, more people are taking photo’s with their Iphones than any other camera system in the world and some legendary shots have been taken, without pixel peeping you’d physically struggle to tell them apart. The best camera is always the one you have with you and where Fuji really shines is the compact light wieght system, its like an engine with good power to wieght ratio most modern 4 cylinders are light wieght and fuel efficeent and dominante the market vs a big heavy clunky V8 that guzzles fuel and thats coming from someone who loves both Nikon and V8’s.

It is what it is - shooting a fabulous picture is one thing - turning that picture into a "visual image" is another. As long as you stay within "displaying pics on monitors/TV - is one thing. When you actually want to turn your files into a hard copy of a printed picture - the physical size of the sensor is still a critical factor.

@@BernhardSchwarz-xs8kp turning a picture into an image lies within the nut behind the camera not the capability of the camera. How big of images are we talking here, there is not a huge difference between aps-c and full frame and a misconception apsc cannot be used professionally for shoots but many do….if your serious about large prints any serious photographer would just skip both and go medium format….

I have used Fuji for the past many years. X-T20, X-H1, X-T4, And now the X-H2s. I am NOT a fanboy of any brand, that thinking just does not compute for me as no company pays me to use their product. I am intrigued by the Nikon Zf but am always hesitant to switch, as the effort (selling gear) for what may be a regret without really knowing is annoying. What would I lose? What do I gain? I am just a hobbyist who wants to have accurate autofocus for fast moving pets/people with great image quality. Availability and price of lenses is a question as well. Currently I have the XF 70-300, XF 33 f1.4, XF 50 f2, Sigma 18-50 f2.8, and the Tamron 11-20 f 2.8. Replacing some or all of these might be costly. :) Thanks for your video.

You would lose the slightly smaller size and weight of your gear and the often cheaper prices they offer. You'd lose the extra reach of the APS-C system and of course the great Fujifilm community.
You'd gain so much more though. You'll benefit from much improved low light, wider field of view, improved dynamic range, great autofocus, much more detail in your images and so much more. You'll still have recipes if you like them, and you'll have a huge selection of lenses, especially with the FTZ adaptor. The longer I'm using this camera, the more I wish I had left Fujifilm earlier.

I've used Fuji and a full frame camera so I can expand a bit. Full frame offers a "better" more realistic image quality, but the difference can be small(er) depending on the scene. But this is all the expense of a bigger body, bigger lenses, and usually more costly lenses (though there are some lenses that are price and weight competitive).
The XH-2s is a decently big camera though that is similarly sized to many full frame cameras. The Nikon ZF is a little heavier, but it doesn't have a grip, and adding a grip makes the camera weigh ~800g. There's the Z 40mm f2 lens, which is 200g. There's also the Nikon Z 50mm f1.8 lens which is ~60g heavier than the Fuji 33mm f1.4 lens, which isn't that big of a difference. I will say, there's nothing like the Fuji 50mm f2 on full frame that comes close in weight for this focal length. There's also nothing like the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 on Nikon Z that comes close in weight. Closest there is is the Nikon Z 24-50 f/4-6.3, which doesn't zoom as much.
The ZF (and other full frame cameras) have good image quality at higher ISO though, which is very helpful for taking photos of pets indoors at 3200/6400 ISO. I think this might be the most obvious and beneficial difference for you.
However, Fujifilm cameras have aperture rings which I like. Film simulations help a lot in getting photos that you don't have to edit, which might also be a big consideration for you - not too sure how it is on the ZF.
I'm personally going to get a Fuji XT-30 that I can get used for $600, with a pancake lens it will be super easy to fit in my jacket. But that's in addition to a full frame camera that I'll take out for when the day is more photography focused (but I also tend to do some landscape photography where Full Frame excels more at). I may just even downsize to Fuji honestly since I'm a hobbyist anyways.
You can search on google "Flickr" + "name of particular full frame lens" if you want to see how full frame looks.

absolutely 100% correct, I use the Fujifilm XH2S for sports and video, but for everything else the Nikon Z7, using the same lens on both bodys the AF-S 80-400 you instantly know which body was used and see the difference in the IQ as soon has you put the images on screen..

As someone who shoots both Fuji X and Canon full frame I have to say I don't notice the level of difference in image quality and ISO performance that you indicate. Not saying there is no difference but you have to pixel peep rather than took at real world prints or projected/dpi images to notice (assuming decent post production in both cases). In my camera club we have members with all sorts of equipment and the choice of equipment makes no difference not only to their ability to win competitions and achieve RPS and similar accreditations but also to be accepted in international Salons and exhibitions and sell their work for good money. Personally I have been thinking of moving to a Nikon Z8 with a Z6 as a second body, the sole reason from moving from Canon being Canons unwillingness to include a top LCD on anything south of the R5 and I cant live without seeing settings without lifting up or tilting the camera. However I feel the difference in image quality between Fuji X and any full frame doesn't warrant the outlay of more money on new full frame gear (the R5ii is not long off). I am likely to go to Fuji GFX for when I need the very best in quality (typically landscape and still life for me) and stick to the X for more walkabout/street stuff. Obviously the difference in depth of field for any given angle of view at any given aperture is different between the different formats is just a physical fact - but what is preferable will depend on shooting style and subject

    • @OneCameraOneLens
      @OneCameraOneLens  6 місяців тому

Thanks for the great reply, yes, pixel peeping you see these things much more, but just editing alone you notice it. I'm not sure about Canon files, but there is a ridiculous amount of dynamic range and low light performance in Nikon cameras.
As I've mentioned throughout, and others have too, it's more than just the image quality (which is different). There are so many extra benefits to full frame, but then again, for some forms of photography, crop sensor camera's are needed.
There's no right or wrong answer, I'm just starting the things you'll notice when you leave Fujifilm (or other APS-C), when you haven't been shooting images side by side with a full frame camera.
Thanks for you input, lovely to hear 🙏

I appreciated this video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’ve been shooting Fujifilm for around seven years now I have encountered many of the frustrations you and other commenters have noted. I recently picked up a Z6. It is spectacular for all of the reasons you’ve mentioned in this video, I have it paired with the 50 mm 1.8 S lens.
With all of that said, I’m realizing that I will forever be existing in a two system world lol. For me, at least. Here’s the thing, for all of the pros that you mention there is still something about the character and color of the Fujifilm system, and the tactile elements as well. These things combined actually make me wanna pick it up more then I pick up z6. I don’t even know if it’s something I can completely articulate; the reasons why that is. But what I’m starting to figure out is that at least in my mind they are two different animals - I want to use them for different reasons. At least I do. The Z system with its clinical sharpness and perfection is excellent for high-pressure, client work and low light situations like concerts. If on the other hand, I’m documenting my friend who is a guitar builder working out of his garage, or I’m walking around the streets of my small city it’s the Fujifilm for me. Again, I think it is different tools for different settings.

I have an Olympus EM5ii, a Fuji X-T3 and a Nikon D750 and I completely concur with your summary. The X-T3 is much closer to the EM5ii for image noise, less than a stop difference. What really disappointed me is that the Fuji colours can be over saturated, even raw files, and quite difficult to correct in post, especially the greens. Both the Olympus and Nikon files are much easier to process too. I know the Fujifilm fanboys are now spitting blood, but that's the honest truth.

After 10 years with fuji I went back to Nikon, First with the Z5 and then back to DSLRs, this time with the D850 being my workhorse/do everything camera. The Z5 is brilliant but the battery life of mirrorless cameras is what brought me back to DSLRs along with costs of investing into the systems.
I have F glass dating back to the 60s and with practice and knowing your gear and their sweet spots I can get Just as good of an image as I can with any mirrorless if not better in feel. It's all about the glass, the body is just the "capture" device of what your particular lens sees.
Some may say; well just adapt that glass to your Z (or in my case Z5), Yes and I have but again I will mention Battery life and build.

Nikon has addressed a couple of my pet peeves with the Z8 firmware release that I’m hoping will make their way to the Zf (and possibly the Z6ii/Z7ii) such as (1) being able to change the width of the focus square boundary lines and (2) hitting the shutter button while in magnified MF mode to return to normal viewing size. I use the formula of determining the equivalent between any crop sensor, APS-C or MFT, to FF. APS-C in most is 1.5 and 1.6 in Canon. MFT is 2.0. So, f stop of a APS-C f1.4 is 2.1 and a f1.4 MFT lens is f2.8. This applies to depth of field, not to exposure.

Indeed, exposure is not affected at all which many forget about. However, with the hugely better ISO performance, it's great you can use an F4 lens as if it's a F/1.4 APS-C lens. It's things like this that really makes it worthwhile. Thank you for your great response 👌

"This applies to depth of field, not to exposure." THIS can not be stated enough. I move from Fuji APSC to Sony fullframe A7R2 then A7R4, then Fuji GFX100S, GFX has the best image quality but GFX has the worst autofocus system. Fullframe mirrorless regardless of brands (Canon, Nikon or Sony) are still the best camera for hybrid shooters, they have large range of lens selection, best autofocus system.

Wow Mark - I thought it was just me. I concur on all you say. I struggled on with Fuji for 10 years and just about lost some of my clients. I couldn't quite get the look they wanted and anything over ISO 1,600 on the APSC (particularly if you had to pull up shadows), very quickly turned to custard. When I bought my first Z6ii (2 years ago), my jaw hit the deck when I saw my first image. I really thought my monitor was playing tricks on me. Suffice to say I have 7 of their wonderful lenses now and my clients are so happy with their images. Even the shots I post on my website seem to leap off the screen. I have a huge shoot on Sunday (the Dragon Boat races, here in Perth Australia), I'm so excited to have both of my beautiful bodies around my neck with lenses. I shoot everything outdoors with HSS, TTL, daylight balanced fill-flesh (Godox V1). My images are just gorgeous and I'm getting other jobs now from people who see my images. People go on about the Z6ii how the AFC is not good etc etc. I've tried the Z8 and 9, but would never change over. They are too big and heavy and I don't need the huge files from those sensors. If you know your camera well, have the right AFC settings, you will barely miss any shots through not focusing. All my events involve people jumping and moving and dancing - fast moving action - and after a shoot of over 1,000 images, I'd be lucking to have 10 to 20 that were out of focus. I feel sorry for people who are still scabbing it with Fuji.

I'm really enjoying the Z6ii, everything from it's ergonomics, right through to it's menu system. Everything is where it should be. But... It's the output that really blows me away. It is fantastic. I really can't get over the difference in my images now, especially in lower light.

It is always about making the client happy, and plenty of us use or used Fujifilm. You are right, clients, or anyone else don't care what camera you use as long as you get the result they want. Always important to remember, but also important to remember that there are many different types of photography that sometimes needs tools that can perform better when needed, whether it be a micro four thirds for wildlife or full frame for very low light it insane bokeh. Just use what suits you best, and of course, importantly enjoy and learn from your experience.

As I said in the video. If you're just using your camera for photos on the internet, where 90%+ of people use phones to view your images, , full frame is pointless as you won't see any difference.
Where you notice the difference is other areas, again mentioned. Being able to shoot with little to no noise, being able to shoot and recover detail in the dark, being able to recover detail in the far distance that just gets lost on APS-C or micro four thirds when you crop, being able to manipulate raw images easier to name a few things. You'll see the difference when you open your editing software and start to edit, and you'll see it in the finer areas of printed work.
And the best thing is, my camera and lenses worked out cheaper than just going for a new Fujifilm camera. Which again is another positive.

Hi Mark! What software did you use to process your Fujifilm X RAW files? I am asking because I too am thinking of moving away from Fujifilm X system after having used it for over 10 years. I was in love with the Fujifilm system due to the retro style and camera operating experience with tactile dials, but upon using DXO Pure RAW 2/3, I am losing interest due to the need of synthetically adding sharpness to the Fuji files, which they don't have natively. In some photos, I see artefacts that DXO Pure RAW induces. I understand that full frame sensor has better ISO performance & dynamic range, but please help me understand if it has more natural sharpness & details too, which I find lacking in Fujifilm X cameras. I have never used any full frame digital camera, so don't know how different one would be in terms of sharpness & details. I am looking at Nikon Zf particularly. I have X-E1, X-T3, and recently purchased X-T5, but couldn't use it at all due to falling sick, so don't know how 40 mega pixels make a difference in sharpness and details and if it would bring any benefit in comparison to Nikon Zf. Your answers will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Over the years I used all the main editing software to process Fujifilm files (Adobe, Luminar, ON1, DXO and Darktable). For the majority of it though, my preferred editing software for my Fujifilm files was Darktable and ON1 Photo Raw.

Hmmm, I went from Sony full frame to Fuji X-T2 and couldn't have been happier with mage quality, I now have an X-H2 and I'm even more impressed, the DXO tests bear out the low noise claims of Fuji cameras too when compared to full frame, even compared to the legendary D850, in fact the X-H2 has a superior dynamic range to the Z6 II by around a half stop, even better in practice if shot at ISO-500 and push processed (as that's where it has the best signal to noise ratio), for landscape and night sky I'm never going to have a bokeh fetish, I do like Nikon cameras though, they do seem to get things just right and the fan boy hype around Fuji glass is not really justified it's only as until recently there were no third party options for users to compare, they do have some exceptional glass like all brand though and their kit glass is better than most other brands kit stuff.

Using this logic, your next comparison should be your full frame Nikon against one of the Fuji medium format cameras. If you're going to do a comparison, why don't you try APS-C to APS-C. Also, consider learning how to spell "Flexibility".🤔
