  • I have been using the Still Spirits Turbo Yeast triple pack for many yeast and never had one fail on me. For those new to distilling, this video is here to help show you how to get your first wash going.

    Hi, just wanted to say that I enjoy your videos as it’s great to see difference opinions from more advanced brewers than myself. I was surprised to see that using the triple distilled yeast took 21 days to ferment, as the instructions say 6-7 days, but mine usually takes 10 days before I get a hydrometer reading the same on 2 consecutive days and all activity has stopped.

      Hi Peter. The wash actually took 18 days to complete. The reason why it took so long was because I had the temperature set to a low 20c. This low temp does result in a lot slower & calmer fermentation.

    Part A is sulphites, and reduces oxidation during racking , so I'd add it before racking

    Just subscribed to the channel, loving the videos. Could I ask, did you drill a hole in the rubber stopper for the heater to go through and well as the air lock? Cheers.

      Hi Dave. Thank you very much for your kind words. I just wish I had more time to make even more videos! As to the immersion heater, it came with the rubber bung already attached and the 2nd hole for the airlock. While they are a bit expensive, I purchased it from Love Brewing (www.lovebrewing.co.uk/love-brewing-immersion-heater-230v-100w-and-free-lid). You can buy heaters cheaper through places like Amazon, but you often don't get a rubber bung and the quality can sometimes be bad. I have had my two heaters for over 6 years and they are still going strong, so you get what you pay for.

    I am loving your videos, I have a pack of Alcotec turbo carbon 48, do you think the Turbo clear would be better to use than the alcotec? I haven't purchased yet and I'm not sure what one to go for.

      Thank you Vibrant. The Turbo Klar is ok (as long as you don't get a badly packaged one) and to be honest I haven't tried the Still Spirits finings with an Alcotec wash to know how well it works. I would say use an Alcotec Turbo Klar with the Alcotec yeast as a set. But I would recommend using the Still Spirits tripple pack (yeast + carbon + finings) if you want a really clear wash. Soon I hope to do a video on as TPW (Tomato Paste Wash) as well as a Kale wash as they are very simple and can produce much cleaner spirit. The added bonus is they are cheaper to make!

    Just bought this Yeast kit and just realized its only for certain stillers. I got a three pot stiller 5ltr from Amazon and I still with other yeast and just wondering if this will still in mine? Will it still work on most stills???

      Hi, sorry for not responding sooner, been a hectic week for me. Do not worry, you can use this is any still. Still Spirits quote the Air Still or T500 as they want you to buy it from them, but you are good to go.

      Hi Anthony. I bought the degasser from Love Brewing (www.lovebrewing.co.uk/degasser-wine-whip/) thy are really good. You could make one yourself, but since it is only £10.96, I don't think there is a point to try and make one!

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  2 роки тому +1

      Hi. Some brewing terms are a little odd. To 'Rack off' means simply to Siphon. So, to transfer the wash from the brewing bucket to another clean bucket (and leaving the yeast at the bottom of the brewing bucket).

    How does this pure turbo yeast differ from wine yeast? Any off flavours using the turbo yeast?

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  2 роки тому +2

      Hi @paulkazjack. The yeast is designed specifically to produce a wash for distilling, so has all the required nutrients added. To use Wine yeast or even break yeast can produce good tasting spirits, but you will need to add your own nutrients. As to off-flavours, there is some slight smell and flavour, but there always is with turbo yeasts. If you want to do a wash, your best bet is a Birdwatchers.

      @@brewingadvice ok thanks for that. Another question for you now, the smell of tails in your alcohol (wet cardboard) can this be filtered out with active carbon? Thanks

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  2 роки тому +1

      Hi @@paulkazjack. Running neutral spirit through activated carbon (if prepared well) can help in removing some off smells and flavours, but it can only do so much. My advice is to keep the tails and chuck them back in the still the next time you run it. It though all depends what you are distilling and what you want to make.

    liquid carbon after the yeast ,per instructions.,5 days at 25 c equals 20 percent alcohol.

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  10 місяців тому

      I prefer to add the liquid carbon first as that needs a good stir to get it mixed up. The yeast I don't like to mix too hard.
      The extra degree will result in a quicker ferment, yes.

    Hi,did you get the nail polish/medical smell at end?

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  6 місяців тому +1

      It does give a bit of a dodgy smell at the end, yes. I have never had anything that smells as bad as nail polish, nor anything like wet newspaper that people state they get. I can't really explain what the Still Spirits Turbo Yeast smells like, but it isn't great. Saying that though, one you add a flavour pack or make a gin from maceration, the smell goes away and I have always liked them. I though find that most spirits tend to smell and taste better after a few months to settle.

      Hi @@mohammedabushoog4898 , I am not really sure what you are asking. To do a Turbo yeast, all you should need is the Turbo yest, some sugar and water.

    When is it ready for consumption?, without the distill though

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  Рік тому

      Hi Nate. Not quite sure I understand your question. You wouldn't want to consume this without distilling it first. If you are asking how long it takes to ferment and clear before you can distill it, then that would be around 10 days to ferment and then 2-4 days to clear. So in all, I would say up to 2 weeks from start to end. You would then want to do a Stripping Run and then a Spirit Run in your still.

    whats the point of adding carbon in wile it ferments it loos like a gimic to go oooww it clear

    • @RJ-wx3fh
      @RJ-wx3fh 2 роки тому +2

      The turbo yeast with the nutrients and additives tend to create some slightly nail varnishy organic byproducts - the carbon adsorbs these, leaving the ethanol basically unaffected(small percentage decrease in the bad tasting parts really improves flavour, but wouldn't massively affect overall ethanol yield)

      @@RJ-wx3fh but thats why u filter the finished product

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  2 роки тому +1

      Yes and no as to a gimic. If you have a good still, then no, you don't need carbon. Adding the carbon will help make it clear like water in the end, so will be a lot less stress on your still. Many people though throw un-cleared wash in their still and never have a problem. So end of the day it is personal preference.

    What happens if didn't degas properly can you save it?

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  Рік тому

      Hi Coreena,
      Do not worry at all. A small amount of people don't degas, they just rack it off into their boiler and run it. The downside of not degassing it, or not degassing it fully is that you can get a lot of build-up of foam on the top and this can lead to Puking. If you are new to the hobby, then do not worry about it. Keep an eye on your still and watch for the output (the distillate) to come out as a Drip, Drip, Spurt. If you get any sudden pouring of output where it doesn't stop for a couple of seconds or more, then it is puking. Turn off the boiler and let it cool. Once cool, pour the output back in the boiler. You could always then try to degas it a little more.
      I hope this helps.

    I notice your OG is 1.096 and FG is 0.090. According to the forumula for calulating the ABV (OG-FG)*131,25 you would get : 1,096-0,0090=1,006*132,25=133,04 %. This is ofc wrong. I am guessing your FG is 0,990, which would give you an ABV of 14%
